Holy chopsaw Batman. Nice Ford shirt. That portable bandsaw looks awesome. I've never seen one of those before. Good job tacking the vice inside the beam. Real smooth. Thanks for including that, made me smile, we all have our moments.
***** Oh yea the portaband works well both on the little stand horizontal or using it free hand like that. I had a slight angle to cut on one in, and a severe angle on the other end. It worked well on the small angle but not enough throad depth to cut the severe one.
He torch-cut that beam faster than our cold-cut saw could, but that abrasive saw of yours is something else! Thank you for all the editing that went into making this very watchable. Btw, I do find your lack of PPE a little disturbing, but it's your shop, so your rules. I'm just proud to see someone else here in 817-ville producing solid content with great projects like this. Our QuickJack has been a lifesaver, but this is something we're now considering. We have exactly the same clearance issues here that you do. Half a decade later and this is still current and valuable - excellent work.
I'm heading down this road myself in the next couple of months. Just bought a place with a 1500 sq. ft. shop and I am into CNC as well. I definitely need a gantry crane from day one and I am encouraged by what I am seeing. Thank you for that! If I think I can do so without boring people to death, I'll try making a video of the process. I doubt it will be as good as yours, but I'll learn. ;) Thanks for sharing, and good luck (though you are probably already well into your new shop by now). Part 2 is next for me ...
Annular cutters for your mag drill will save you all the pre drilling steps. You can even get a collet to use them in your mill. I honestly how I lived without them for so long. The annular cutters are probably my best investment ever, next to my mag drill that is!
Mr. Smooth had me smiling, seeing somebody else screwing up made me not feel so bad. Ive had a full week of doing dumb things, not stupid, just getting ahead of myself like you did... you'll see in my next video. Like always, I enjoyed your video!
GasserGlass I hear ya Mr. Roach, if it wasn't for correcting all my screw ups I wouldn't have anything to do! I will check out your next vid when you upload it.
Great work Gary, Mr Smooth was at my shop this weekend. Drilled 4 holes in a place that would not work on the fiberglass cover. Cost me about 4 hours in a redo.:(
Entrapment - I did the same thing when I was building my elevator. I entrapped the seat assembly into the lift mechanism and then had to cut the whole thing in half to exit the entrapment. Smooth move for sure Exlax. LOL.
Great job man. I thought that looked more involved than a quick fix. That will be very handy in your new shop. Congrats on that by the way. Also nice welds. Douglas
RetroWeld Thanks Douglas! Yea, I was just going to throw together some tubing and then cut it all apart and reuse it, but figured i would go ahead and make a real gantry crane and hang onto it until i need it in the new place.
ZIGgassedUP Thanks Zig, yea, he watches some of my videos, but not sure if he watched it to the end... I try not to cuss, but every once in a while it just comes out!
Mr. Smooth was working on my projects all weekend too... I did like how you looked at the end of the mig torch as if it somehow misfired and that's why the weld looked like the gas was off!!!! I like your new design a lot better. That rig will serve you well.
Greg's Garage Yea, This guy Eric contacted me offered to let me use his gantry crane, as it turned out his shop is between my house and petes shop, in fact he is 5 min from pete. He does art/fabricaiton work, kind of like Kevin Caron, he is the one i sent your pivot door too. He has a 3,000 Gantry that he got from Northern tool, so I just sort of looks rough dimensions from it and loosely copied the design. I hear ya on Mr. Smooth, he was kicking my butt!
KingsDisasterGarage Oh man, your not kidding. Sometimes I get in a hurry and edit that stuff out to keep the video short as possible, but I also l add them back at the end like i did this one
Nice work Gary.........The crane is going to be really handy to have around. I got a different name for Mr. Smooth around here...........I try hard to keep the bastard locked up but he is good at getting out!
That design should be very strong! I really like it and may have to "borrow" the plans at some point. I'm in the same boat; when the roll up door is open overhead I am very limited in height... Best wishes, Tom Z
Tom Zelickman Thanks Tom. I incorporated some of the negative Ramsey Customs pieces that you made in the paint video that I will upload in a day or so, it turned out pretty cool. I listed the basic dimensions in the comment section, or i could give you more info when your ready, it's pretty straight forward
+Hondo Trailside It has mill scale on the hotrolled steel that helps it not to rust as fast, but it still will eventually rust. Plus it's a high volume place, they move stuff in and out quickly
Sorry I got distracted....noticed your green brake. I have one very similar I'm trying to identify. Mine came off a ship, no label or ID. Mine has a 48 inch opening. Going to clean it up and put it on craigslist(maybe for scrap metal price)...?
The Shade Tree Fix-it Man Thanks George... btw, started watching your video this morning from your salvage run, so your going to put a refrigerator compressor on an air compressor and make it run quieter? interested to see that... i didn't finish the video, had to get to work... More to come on the new shop and what that's all about!
Tom Noble Tom, thanks man, yes it will have Casters on it in the new shop, probably some 8" ones, so it will be around 9 ft. tall with those on it. I won't be able to use them in my garage, not enough height.
Nice build, ignore the safety Nazis. On a side note, please don't use the gun shot sound affect. It sent my PTSD through the roof. I would imagine it does it to others as well. Thanks
Loved the last part of the video! Been there and done that more than once! I'd offer to come up (from Farmers Branch) and help you get that brake up on it's feet If you weren't already building that gantry crane. P.S. Have you ever been to J & I in Madill,OK?
thedge7 Is that the name of a place? Where is it... haven't heard of it. Fulton prices seem good to me, but I have only ever bought from King and Metal Supermarkets, both of them are very expensive.
So what is the make and model of that portable drill press? I'd like to build one of these but will need that type of drilling capability too. Did you think it performed well? Thanks!
Jarod Martin It's a special type of mesh, can't remember the name of it, but i searched around and found the name/type, and had my local metal store order it through their distributor. It's $300 for a 4x8 sheet, so not cheap... but it's pretty cool looking
turbocobra wow! Ok im building a industrial style dresser for the wife. Im trying to biuld it cheap and not skip out on the detail so I may just try my hand at making some. Watch you, retro weld and pete for swrc makes my want to start a channel any suggestions. Thanks agian
Been thinking about getting that dewalt saw but those explosions!😜 I'm thinking of building one of these for my 78 d150 build... I'm in a single car garage and would need it to break down for space. Any suggestions? Or blue prints available?
Next time you're doing something like that, clamp or tack weld the mounting plate to the I-beam and drill straight through with an annular cutter, or a DeWalt extreme 2 drill bit. That'll save you so much time and will always be perfectly lined up.
Dee Jay A CNC plasma table with sheets of 1/8th or 1/4" steel, so i can lift them out of the back of a truck or my trailor... or maybe yank the motor out of car easier! lol who knows what all we will use it for
Aaron August Its a custom welding cart I built. Since all this is in my garage I wanted to go vertical with the 2 welders, plasma cutter and gas bottles. But yea it sort of looks like a 19" Data Center enclosed rack.
Good video. We're somewhat new to the DFW area (Moved here Nov. 2014). Wouldn't mind stopping by your shop some time and seeing what you're capable of. I'm always game for making new connections. I work at a Heavy Duty Diesel shop now, and my boss said he was looking for a gantry (he described what he was looking for, he didn't know what it was called). I told him if I could get my hands on some prints for a 5 Ton Gantry, I could build it there. He seemed to like the idea. Care to link me to some local contacts for getting quality prints to meet or exceed the 5 Ton rating? (Also need it on casters, primarily for pulling engines, but will likely be used for whatever we find we can use it on, and 5 Ton will lift the front of a semi when stacking them for transport.)
This Gantry was lovely based on a 1.5 Ton Northern Tool Gantry. I built a 10 Ton Gantry for a local company that sourced prints from a company in Canada. Unfortunately I can't share their prints as they paid $$ to get them. I am now in Corsicana in a larger shop 50 miles south of Dallas, feel free to come by any time
We are down in Cleburne. As as for the prints, I'd rather pay for a set with an engineer stamp than trust my life to a free set that I cannot validate the ratings on. Is your shop name the same as your channel name?
To be honest and clear, I think it's a bad idea to play an explosive sound in the video whenever you cut a tube! it doesn't make sense and I would prefer to watch the entire boring process than suddenly hear that explosive sound! other than that, thanks for the video.
+turbocobra Mr.Cobra... That there, was some seriously funny shit. I keep thinking of that picture & some kind'a Norman Rockwell type shit-teenager out of the house first time, jussa cussin' up a storm. I'm pretty stoned too though, so...
You getting out of IT or whatever is you do to open a real shop or is it more of a hobby shop, make a little extra money on the side type of deal? I am happy to see Mr Smooth visits other shops, I am getting sick of him messing in mine! LOL
Mopardude I am going to send his ass over to you, he was with me all weekend! More to come on the new shop... But yea, eventually getting out of IT and doing fabrication work full time, tired of Corp America after 25 years!
+Robert Bachmann Why not? It's 110 deg in Tx in the summer, and I weld all the time in shorts. Never been burned, never had an accident. Go ahead and give me a lecture about it... it won't matter, i will keep welding in shorts. You can keep welding in long pants, that's cool!
This is awesome man! Love seeing stuff from my home town. I was just looking into making a gantry crane as well. Is there any way you could share your specs with me?
where is your home town? I dont really have plans for that one. I just went to Northern tool and took some measurements of the one they had and modified it a little. I have lifted 3,000 with it no problem
+H4NS0L0 lol, yea well that's how I do it, t-shrit, running shoes, shorts, close to 500 videos on youtube... so if your squimish you might not want to watch anymore of them :) Thanks man
@@turbocobra I am not sure what you are supposed to wear in Texas. I have the safety Natzis after me too. I would rather wear shorts and a tee-shirt and be somewhat cooler as well! I am in Forney and do mostly welding projects on my channel, I would love to do a video with you at some point if you are interested!
It is obvious this guy is very meticulous. From his truck, his shop, everything in his shop, but when it came time to buy garage doors he bought the cheapest uninsulated doors and jury rigged foam into panels. I sell garage doors. Spend the extra hundred per door and have an R 19 rated door. Penny smart dollar foolish. Hell of a craftsman though...
Holy chopsaw Batman. Nice Ford shirt. That portable bandsaw looks awesome. I've never seen one of those before. Good job tacking the vice inside the beam. Real smooth. Thanks for including that, made me smile, we all have our moments.

He torch-cut that beam faster than our cold-cut saw could, but that abrasive saw of yours is something else!

Great Video and well done. I'm currently making the exact same Gantry as you demo and I thought it was the best design I've seen so far. Thanks!
You are one impressive dude.

cheftush Thanks Tush!
I'm lovin' it. This IS This Old Toney AMPLIFIED!
Awesome! I swear everything your building is on my list! Good stuff!
Gavin Brown Gavin, so what your telling me is I should have made 2 of each, one for me and one for you? lol... Thanks Sir!
Lol no building is the fun part! If you would pick up the extra material that be great! Lol
Great work Gary, Mr Smooth was at my shop this weekend. Drilled 4 holes in a place that would not work on the fiberglass cover. Cost me about 4 hours in a redo.:(
Double R Restorations Oh heck yea Russ, drilling holes in the wrong place is one of Mr. Smooth's specialties! lol
Entrapment - I did the same thing when I was building my elevator. I entrapped the seat assembly into the lift mechanism and then had to cut the whole thing in half to exit the entrapment. Smooth move for sure Exlax. LOL.
EdOfTheNorth Entrapment is indeed the key word!

Doing well Gary. Thanks
Hi, your videos are really amazing. thanks for sharing
+Neil Jean Louis Thanks Neil, very generous comment sir!
nice build will come in handy for other projects. mr. smooth clips happens to the best of us lol
j morley Thanks man, and yes your right about Mr. Smooth, comes out right when you least need it !
Love the whole video great stuff! For a guy like me the end was the best just lets us know even the best make small mistakes!
KingsDisasterGarage Oh man, your not kidding. Sometimes I get in a hurry and edit that stuff out to keep the video short as possible, but I also l add them back at the end like i did this one
I am totally learning over here so I am seeing how you putting this together..making it happen I see..CJ
CountrySideClub Thanks CJ... Paint job coming tomorrow, in some Pearl Orange... You need a sport coat in that color!
turbocobra I can't wait to see you lay dem colors down!!! Ah..if I get the sport coat in orange, you got to get the socks to match lol
Nice design on the gantry crane.
It looks really beefy.
I thought Mr Smooth only showed up at my shop to help out.lol
Nice work buddy. :-)
cecil6711 Thanks Cecil, now I need a Gantry Crane to help me lift that beam up on top!
Nice work Gary.........The crane is going to be really handy to have around.
I got a different name for Mr. Smooth around here...........I try hard to keep the bastard locked up but he is good at getting out!
tomswonderfulworld Thanks To, lol yea we all have our versions of Mr. Smooth!
Thats going to make it a lot easier to move stuff around.
1970chevelle396 I was watching your video on the welding table/cabinet you built. That thing was built like a tank, how is it holding up?
Its holding up good. I don't think it will ever break.

great build didn't see the dimensions on the braces I assume 1/8in wall
It happens to the best of us, which you just proved. Looking forward to seeing your new shop. Are you going into business with your fabrication work?
The Shade Tree Fix-it Man Thanks George... btw, started watching your video this morning from your salvage run, so your going to put a refrigerator compressor on an air compressor and make it run quieter? interested to see that... i didn't finish the video, had to get to work... thedge7 OH yea, Mr. Smooth is a piece of work... Dang, I am only 20-25 min from Farmers Branch... No, haven't heard of them, what do they do?

thedge7 Is that the name of a place? Where is it... haven't heard of it. Fulton prices seem good to me, but I have only ever bought from King and Metal Supermarkets, both of them are very expensive.
Thats good stuff , cha ching on the steel unless you but scrap pieces, Mr smooth, know that guy well
MrFireman164 Thanks man.
Very nice!!!! Where did you get those vises/clamps? On wheels? I could use those...Very cool
So what is the make and model of that portable drill press? I'd like to build one of these but will need that type of drilling capability too. Did you think it performed well? Thanks!
Is was watching older video on your welder cage holder thing and I was wondering where you got the steel mesh for the sides. Thank you.

lol we all have those days Garry
huck01955 Thanks Huck!
I have no idea what a Gantry Crane is but It looks like i"m going to find out!
Shut Yer Face Garage Oh well then sir, you will not want to miss part 2 to see what this whole gantry smantry is all about !
Shut Yer Face Garage Most junkyards have them for allowing people to get out engines and transmissions.
What are those clamps for your pipe stand that hold tubing at a 90 while ya tack er refered to as those are a must
90 deg 3 axis vise from stronghand tools. I have a full video on them
Next time you're doing something like that, clamp or tack weld the mounting plate to the I-beam and drill straight through with an annular cutter, or a DeWalt extreme 2 drill bit. That'll save you so much time and will always be perfectly lined up.
+H4NS0L0 That's a good tip, thanks.
What are name of those angle welding clamps you have on a wheel trolley?
What the heck do you have planned that will require an overhead lift?
Dee Jay A CNC plasma table with sheets of 1/8th or 1/4" steel, so i can lift them out of the back of a truck or my trailor... or maybe yank the motor out of car easier! lol who knows what all we will use it for
Dee Jay Hey where's your bro code? Never question a mans need for a gantry crane. You just nod, agree, and say yes you need one.
cool
How thick is that top plate on the welding table?
I was searching For Gantry cranes and thought you looked familiar......You used to hang out with SWRNC.
monster crane that thing Gary, lol @ the end of the vid, ooops ;)
***** Lol, thanks man, appreciate it!
Brazing, brassing ,brasing ,whatever its called you DID it lol

what kind of enclosure is surrounding your welder? It looks like a Server closet???????

+Pete M Thanks Pete, appreciate it. Be sure to check out Part 2 if you didn't see painted and finished up

THELAND SHARK I was using C25 for the Mig, but I get both the argon and C25 at Praxair or Home Depot, I own the bottles and just swap them out.
