You are a man of amazing talent and fortitude. None better on youtube. Your attention to detail is amazing. If it's not proper it's just not good enough. Take care and stay cool.
Those Ramsey Custom signs look sick up there! Nice!!! You can buy a rolling I-Beam hoist that will attach right to the I-Beam now. :) You'll never need the 2 ton engine crane again.
Bang up job Gary. I definitely feel your pain painting in your shop. That's exactly the same issues I have here at mine. With a little care and alot of wiping down and cleaning I've never had any real big problems either though. I hold my breath every time I paint though just waiting on a dreaded fisheye to show up....... Lol
K&L Machine and Welding Yea, painting is really bad to jump up and bite you if you don't have everything perfect, I have had my share of issues with it for sure, but this one turned out decent... Did you see the Part 1 video? I gave you a shoutout, so you may have gotten some new subscribers out of it...
Very nice job with care. Before paint metal surfaces we cleaning them with wet rags with white spirit or alcohol or nitro thiner to remove oils. So job getting easier.
jamesfreddys Thanks sir, took one of your ideas on this one. I cleared over the epoxy on the i-beam. I remember in a video you talked about clearing over epoxy in hidden areas to give it some extra protection, and i had never done that, so figured i would try it and it came out pretty coo.
Thats a great gantry. Im up next. I need a 14'x14. One fixed upright against the fence with a swivel bearing on top. The other upright on wheels so it can stow.Ill use your design to hopefully eliminate twisting when I role in and out.
Cobrafanatik22 Well, it's just a Crane, could have just sprayed some black rattle can on it to keep it from rusting, but starting to think that everything i build is an opportunity to be creative, keep up my other skills like painting, etc Thanks Billy!
Very nice. What do you use to clean your metal before you paint? By the way, your fans were orange after you painted. I assume you have orange bushes as well. lol
RetroWeld Thanks Douglas... I cleaned it all twice with acetone, then sanded with 80 grit on a DA, then cleaned 2-3 more times with laquer thinner. I was still getting residue on a rag. If it had been a car or something important i would keep cleaning until nothing was coming off. Here is a short video I made a few months back showing some detail of the steps for clear coat over bare metal, but it would be the same for any kind of coating you want to put on. th-cam.com/video/aOWrO0uQZ5w/w-d-xo.html
You could put another I-beam on the top with a meaty plate to hold the centres together, so that it spans the width of your garage, then throw a rolling dolly on. The CNC Sign and paint works well ;)
The gantry came out great! One day I'd like to see you do a video on how you actually set up and maintain your spray guns for this stuff. Nice touch with the Ramsey Customs emblems too... Once I get back in town I'll get those large ones cut for you! Best wishes, Tom
Tom Zelickman Thanks Tom. Yea, that worked out great, the negatives you did were the perfect size for the inside of the beam. Awesome, that will be fun to get the large ones. When I paint the large ones, I will show a little more about the paint guns, they are a piece of cake to take apart and clean... When you make the large ones, get some video of it, and send it to me, and I will include it in my video. We can make it a collaboration sort of a back and forth.
I have a very small shop, 24 x 24 and what I do for painting is, I have tarps that are attached to pieces of pvc pipe on one end and to the ceiling on the other end. when I'm not painting, I just roll them up and when I need to paint I move everything out of the way, put some tarps on the floor and roll the four walls of the paint booth down. It keep a lot of the over spray from going all over everything. I use spring clamps down the seams.
So you are going to show when you lift it up right..I am still trying to understand how this tool will pick up the other tool..either way this gantry looks awesome and can't wait to see it in the shop...
turbocobra you killing it..you just made me remember I got to get an orange bow tie lol..keep the coming you got this machine shop down!!! I am seeing it coming together!!
johnsont963 Thanks sir! yea, I have both actually. I have some Paint Mask Stencils that I shoot paint through, then the ones on this project are Plasma cut by another guy on TH-cam... Showed them and talked about him in this video a couple weeks back... th-cam.com/video/g5olCCeEK2M/w-d-xo.html
yes it does, thank you, I will be building mine soon as i just moved into a new house with a garage. i bought 3 inch square tube and i will be using a 4 inch 'I' beam to go across, just deciding on the thickness of the i beam, most likely 1/4 inch. I doubt i will be lifting over 1000 pounds with it. any idea what yours would be rated for in lifting capacity
I noticed a small green brake on the floor...i have the exact one ...but have no idea the brand...came off a navy destroyer and its covered with multiple layers of grey paint...as the navy says if its stationary paint it...!
The bottom tube is 3X3X1/4, the rest is 3X3X1/8. I loosely based my design on a Northern tool unit that is rated for 3,000. I have lifted pretty close to that with absolutely no problem at all
kyle green Hey Kyle, thanks man... yes, I bought a trolley for it today. Not going to use it for lift this Break, but will use it for unloading metal sheets
Ramsey Customs - for more capacity drill more holes to turn the uprights around making the span narrower. Consult the actual capacity of the 5" beam for the span.
Ramsey Customs - turbocobra I build an gantry crane for 1metric ton, height adjustable, with one fixed side, and the other one mobile so I can adjust the span.
I built this for my home garage knowing at the time i would be moving to a larger shop. A few months later i was in the larger shop and put casters on it, just trying to maximize how tall it was
A straight "A" frame design would spread the forces better at the bottom. By putting a verticle strut as the main load bearing column which then sits on the horizontal beam you would get the beam to bow in the middle, and the crane to be unstable. Many people have made gantry cranes here on TH-cam, but they make this mistake of not taking forces and how they are spread.
Your Shit Is To Nice For TH-cam! ........Well Done Looks Great Man.... Love the way it matches the boxes...... What brand are your tool boxes Gary? ..... I have a master set of Stanley Vidmars still in storage in Baltimore that I might sell on ebay...Matching Lockable Desk and service writer stand.
GasserGlass Wow those Vidmars are pretty sweet, should bring good $$, especially with the Desk and stand. Those bottom slim drawers are drafting cabinets with bearing roller slides, Got them on craigslist for $75, the uppers are some Cheap Husky units. I built the caster bases and the frame that joins them, and painted it all to match...
Well, for just piecing it together, you did one hell of a great Job!!! .... I thought your boxes were a pair of the new Vista or new style Vidmar. Jesse James or Foose signature series or something... heh heh... Great Job Son! etc......
Yea i should have, but i really just made it up as i went along and loosely copied some other designs i have found. Go find one in your area for sale and take a few measurements from it
I get comercial tractor trailers occasionally. I also install flatbeds. 4 or 5 a year. I just like the clearance. 14 is pretty comfortable. I have an old harbor freight trolly that fits a 4" beam. I wouldn't mint getting a 6" up their. Im able to do a lot of work here at the house.
Now that's a crane! I can think of a lot of uses for that tool. Looks great Gary.
Double R Restorations Thanks Russ!
wow that is a great addition to your shop.your work is very nice.and enjoy the new shop.
tlcbear2 Thanks man, appreciate it!
Professional all the way around as usual. Looks great!
ncautoman57 Thanks Rich!
You are a man of amazing talent and fortitude. None better on youtube. Your attention to detail is amazing. If it's not proper it's just not good enough. Take care and stay cool.
ncautoman57 You are too kind and way too generous with your compliments. I appreciate it but I am just trying to do a good job....
Looks Awesome Gary!.........That will be super handy in the new shop as well.
tomswonderfulworld Thanks Tom, appreciate it... I think so too. Probably sell my engine hoist now with this...
You are starting to make a name for yourself when people see your builds.
Gantry looks great.
***** Thanks man, appreciate it...
Excellent work as always.
Looks awesome - very nice work.
Tom Noble Thanks Tom
You will find plenty of uses for that gantry! Came out sweet
Velvethamma Thanks Shawn... you still making videos?
turbocobra Lol..... yeah.. If I can make some time to get around to it. Just stalking others for now until I get some content up :)
Oh my freakin god... you are quickly becoming my favourite fabricator on youtube. KEEP IT UP!
Michael Nilsson Thanks Michael, very kind of you sir...
Those Ramsey Custom signs look sick up there! Nice!!! You can buy a rolling I-Beam hoist that will attach right to the I-Beam now. :) You'll never need the 2 ton engine crane again.
***** Hey Devon, yea I bought a trolley to mount on there, just didn't use it for this lift . Thanks Bug!
Bang up job Gary. I definitely feel your pain painting in your shop. That's exactly the same issues I have here at mine. Sick paint work Gary. That apparatus will serve you well.
Greg's Garage Thanks Greg, appreciate your input on it!
Very nice job with care.
Before paint metal surfaces we cleaning them with wet rags with white spirit or alcohol or nitro thiner to remove oils. So job getting easier.
You rock Gary.
jamesfreddys Thanks sir, took one of your ideas on this one. I cleared over the epoxy on the i-beam. I remember in a video you talked about clearing over epoxy in hidden areas to give it some extra protection, and i had never done that, so figured i would try it and it came out pretty coo.
Close call with the ceiling there ! I thought you had a twin... but it was Matt !
***** Oh yea, it was good to have Matt out there helping... Thanks Lars!
Love that colour, I'm going to have to look around your channel for them tool boxes, see if you did a video, they are sensational
Thats a great gantry. Im up next. I need a 14'x14. One fixed upright against the fence with a swivel bearing on top. The other upright on wheels so it can stow.Ill use your design to hopefully eliminate twisting when I role in and out.
+Mobile Welding and Trailer Repair Sounds like a fun project. So 14 tall x 14 wide? What size beam you using?
Dang Gary that thing looks sweet
Cobrafanatik22 Well, it's just a Crane, could have just sprayed some black rattle can on it to keep it from rusting, but starting to think that everything i build is an opportunity to be creative, keep up my other skills like painting, etc Thanks Billy!
Looks good ! I would have used a brush for the paint on such narrow material and be done.
That frame looks sweet...Are you thinking of a running rail to go on that I beam at a later date.?..Can I borrow it .?.
ZIGgassedUP Yea, I bought a trolley for it, will use it at the new shop for things that need to be lifted in the center...
Very nice. What do you use to clean your metal before you paint? By the way, your fans were orange after you painted. I assume you have orange bushes as well. lol

huck01955 Thanks Huck
Nice color
TheMarcusGomez Thanks Marcus!

So you are going to show when you lift it up right..I am still trying to understand how this tool will pick up the other tool..either way this gantry looks awesome and can't wait to see it in the shop...
CountrySideClub Thanks CJ, so what do you think about the Orange, you already got a sport coat that color? :)
turbocobra you killing it..you just made me remember I got to get an orange bow tie lol..keep the coming you got this machine shop down!!! I am seeing it coming together!!
as the man Pete says gettin er done nice job
1965lostboy Exactly! Thanks man!
Very nice unit! The Ramsey Customs signs are those painted or plasma cut ? they look sweet......
johnsont963 Thanks sir! yea, I have both actually. I have some Paint Mask Stencils that I shoot paint through, then the ones on this project are Plasma cut by another guy on TH-cam... Showed them and talked about him in this video a couple weeks back... th-cam.com/video/g5olCCeEK2M/w-d-xo.html
You are one smart cookie Gary ;)
***** I don't know about that... thanks Cary!
That's sweet!
Shut Yer Face Garage Thanks sir.
What tickness did you use with the structiral pipes. Than you. Greetins from Argentina
3mm wall thickness
think it would cover faster if you threw a quick black or white (depending on desired final outcome) base coat down?
+Finn Custom Knives I sprayed it over white sealer on the toolboxes, and it's like shooting clear coat. really takes forever to cover.
nice job
nice job. just wondering what your dimensions were?, mostly for the length of the base of the A frames. and what thickness was your tubing and I beam
The base tubes are 6ft long, the uprights are around 8ft tall, 3/8th flange, the beam is 9ft wide hope that helps
yes it does, thank you, I will be building mine soon as i just moved into a new house with a garage. i bought 3 inch square tube and i will be using a 4 inch 'I' beam to go across, just deciding on the thickness of the i beam, most likely 1/4 inch. I noticed a small green brake on the floor...i have the exact one ...but have no idea the brand...came off a navy destroyer and its covered with multiple layers of grey paint...as the navy says if its stationary paint it...!
Very good made ... can you tell me what is the maximum load in middle of the I-beam and ISO number of this orange color?
Many thanx.
nice work. sorry if i missed it in the video but do you know a general weight rating of your gantry crane? and was the 3 inch tube 1/8th inch thick
The bottom tube is 3X3X1/4, the rest is 3X3X1/8. I loosely based my design on a Northern tool unit that is rated for 3,000. I have lifted pretty close to that with absolutely no problem at all
Great job! You going to put a trolley on it?
kyle green Hey Kyle, thanks man... yes, I bought a trolley for it today. Not going to use it for lift this Break, but will use it for unloading metal sheets
Nice crane, whats the capacity? Also how much does the I beam weight?
3000 lb. Not sure how much it weights, maybe 70 lb?
Ramsey Customs - for more capacity drill more holes to turn the uprights around making the span narrower. Consult the actual capacity of the 5" beam for the span.
Ramsey Customs - turbocobra I build an gantry crane for 1metric ton, height adjustable, with one fixed side, and the other one mobile so I can adjust the span.
many from gto mexico good video
how big and long is the top bim and how much weight you can lift?
+Mic Ibarra It's 5" beam that's 8ft long, should lift 1.5 tons
Any particular reason you did not put casters on it?
I built this for my home garage knowing at the time i would be moving to a larger shop. A few months later i was in the larger shop and put casters on it, just trying to maximize how tall it was
Why you didn't make wheels? Where you got plans? There color is pretty nice, either.
I did add wheels recently in the new shop.
🔥Ramsey Customs - turbocobra What about calculations? Did you try to calculate max load?
Looks great,,, but it still ain't no lift table from HF! LOL. Good job.
GunPilot Lol, I hear ya man, keep watching, you might just see one of those lift tables in a video before you know it!
no trolley for the i beam?
+Daniel Hough Yea, I have 2 trolley's, I just didn't use them for this. I just had painted the beam, and didn't want to mar up the paint lol
+turbocobra congrats on the new workshop
+Daniel Hough Thanks Man, appreciate it.
nice
vwdarrin Thanks Darrin, good to hear from you
A straight "A" frame design would spread the forces better at the bottom. Many people have made gantry cranes here on TH-cam, but they make this mistake of not taking forces and how they are spread.
Mine is just a copy of the ones sold at Northern Tool and other places so it's not my design
temporary drop casters would work
Thanks for the video. Do you know what is the max load capacity on this crane? Thank you
+iliof1 I copied a design sold by northern tool they rated at 1.5 Ton (3,000 lb).
ok. Thank you.
That crane should work a lot better than an engine hoist to pick stuff up.
1970chevelle396 Thanks Ken oh yea, definitely...
What size I beam is that
6"
Your Shit Is To Nice For TH-cam! ........Well Done

Beautiful. But...it would have been purdy in red and black !
UGAgeorgiaDAWG Hey man, I built this in Auburn colors since I heard you were a part time Auburn fan!
where's the de-friend button?
It be nice if you included the sketch with measurements
Yea i should have, but i really just made it up as i went along and loosely copied some other designs i have found. Go find one in your area for sale and take a few measurements from it
Goodness you do nice work.... Controlling my language ...:)
tertessa Thanks man, appreciate it...

I would rather have a nut fall on my head than a loaded crane.
You should never install hardware where it will fall out. Aft , in and down always.
funny, 2 different comments with 2 different opinions
It looks like you do have not the space to justifier a gantry in the first place!!!
Awesome looking tool buddy.
And no viagra needed. lol :-P
cecil6711 Lol, exactly, thanks Cecil!
Russia 🇷🇺 👍
nice
