  • For years, BART has struggled to keep fare evaders off trains. Two weeks ago, the agency began testing new 7-foot gates at the West Oakland station. Are they working? bit.ly/41P5Zw9

In places like London, UK, if you don't have a valid ticket on the bus or trains, you get fined immediately if you're caught by inspectors. They don't let you just walk off.

In europe most of the public transportation is open and if you’re caught you get a somewhat severe fine. In the states the amount of people that dont pay makes higher fares for the ones that pay. And that’s really unfair

Good for that bike rider! Can't believe he went to yell at him afterwards... lol, dude, you're not paying

I'm pretty sure that a 6 foot gate is going to be just as hard to fare evade but be a lot less intimidating. Transit shouldn't be intimidating for it's regular users and being faced with a 7ft gate is intimidating and shouldn't be needed.
Also the barriers need to be programmed so that there are slightly more narrow lanes for just a person to go through, have these have the barriers shut more fiercely to prevent piggybacks, then have stroller/accessible slightly larger gates for those who need them and these gates don't shut as quickly but you can then place a member of staff at this gate for both general assistance but also as a deterrent for evaders trying to piggyback.

If it works, I don't see a problem. BART also has a problem with crime so more gate security will lead to a nicer experience.

@@ciello___8307 These gates won't do much for crime if they stay open for as long as they are. A tortoise could tailgate someone and still get through before the gates close!
As I say, a 6ft gate will not make much, if any difference in comparison to a 7ft gate when it comes to crime prevention but it would be a lot less intimidating for regular users.

Why don't BART's gates automatically close for piggybacking fare evaders that try to follow paying customers into the system? Looks like a major security flaw!

People going thru need some time to do it or the gates would close on the paying rider as well if they aren't the fastest person

Wrong. Stop legitimizing crime. Stop making excuses for the losers that jump over the gates and put the financial burden on the non-losers that DON'T jump the gate.

$90 mil to deter $25 mil in "lost revenue" let me say this if the people can't ride for free they ain't going to ride what a joke just make it free the taxpayers already pay out the ass for it

Free would be great. I doubt people would just stay home or take another means of transport If they had to pay. Bart is the most efficient in most cases. People will find a way Into the system somehow or be forced to pay

$90Mil ONE TIME COST to deter $25Mil YEARLY LOSS.
In less than four years BART will make their money back, longer depending on how much the system deters.
So no it isnt a wasted taxpayer money if that loss of money is recovered and reinvested in the transit system.

      @@urbanchillerTM Are you that stupid?
You think the ppl who didn't paid their ticket are going to pay? No, they are just going to take other transport way.
So they'll not earn 25Mil a year. Not lossing something doesn't mean you are earning it.
It's just common manipulation of the stupid to instill that in your brain.
Everything is just gonna be more poor. Those issues aren't new and this solution is already proven not efficient. It only forbid a lot of ppl to travel, but doesn't solve anything in money loss for the company. And the more you do it, the less money you earn. It's pretty simple.
