Actually, I think BART would still lose money every year even if they stopped 100% of all cheaters, so while this is probably going to be an improvement, it's not going to solve their financial issues. The typical criminal and problematic element on public transit are those who do not pay for it. Solving this issue will ultimately make riders feel safer, and possibly even attract new riders who will actually pay. Public transit is the best way to move large groups of people as adding car lanes has been proven to not reduce traffic at all. Most people I know, do not believe public transit is safe enough to actually use it, nor consistent enough. We should be working harder to replicate what our European friends have accomplished, or even better what the Japanese have accomplished.

I don't take BART very much anymore, but I used to sense people coming up behind me, and intentionally wait a moment to dart through so that it closed right behind me. I mean, if they jump over, then that's that. But they won't get through an open gate on my dime, lol.

Not just Japan. I travel all over for my work. In most parts of Asia, even in China, they leave the gates open during peak commute hours to speed up the process. This is a societal and political issue of not enforcing rules and laws. I am very sure these gates will soon be branded as racist gates.

I rode BART for years, and there were many times when people would sneak up close to me, and try to get in or out on my ticket. I learned to scan my Clipper, step through and quickly STOP and let the gate close before the other person could get through. It worked, but it would piss people off and many times I had to deal with someone screaming in my face. Some people feel they don't ever have to pay for anything. Shame really.

I've literally been saying since the 90's that they should have these. Even back then I would regularly see people just jump over. This should help keep most of the druggies who just use the trains to sleep on all day off the trains and help BART's bottom line at the same time.

When you pay your fare, you put your act together. For those that don't, they tend to assault on other passengers who do pay. That explains why riders say they don't feel safe on the BART trains. Go figure.
I was in Seattle at a hotel where room cards are used to access the elevators 24/7. A scruffy looking guy got on the elevator and did not have his card. He was stalling in hopes someone would let him access the floors. People on the elevator hailed an employee and asked them to help him. We must remain vigilant as more people are simply thieves prepared to override security measures.

Correct. Big retail stores can install these at the entrance and let the store employees to lock these doors when looting takes place. No one can get out from the store until police arrives.

The trustworthiness of a community can be measured by the level of fare enforcement at its railway station. Consider for example that in many areas of England and Japan, fare gates aren't used or checked at all and it is simply a matter of honor. When you reach the point where even fences no longer keep honest people honest, and you have to build walls, you no longer live in a trustworthy society.
Japan and England actually invest in rail at the local and national level, regardless of the income of the areas the trains are in, and both countries have reasonable costs of living AND liveable wages. Japan is especially affordable and so even the poorest person doesn't need to fare evade bc the cost of transit is low. In the US if you can't afford a car you're probably living paycheck to paycheck and live in an area with no amenities. I always pay but I understand why others don't. My local transit agency is very mediocre and recently installed fare gates without considering so many things like student bus passes and peak time fare enforcement. 😂 When the people running the agency are incompetent I don't lose sleep about their bottom line. When American transit agencies stop being garbage people will stop fare evasion.

Toll bridges used to become free once the public paid off the cost of construction through tolls, you used to be able to afford college with a part time job, you used to be able to afford groceries with a part time job, let alone a full time. Corporations profits are subsidized with government assistance, you want me to pay? You want me to be a good little societal cog? Then. Stop! Exploiting! Me! BART is in the business of selling rides, so the "maybe he doesn't have the money ", is not an acceptable excuse. I saw an older woman shoved from behind because she wasn't moving fast enough for the fare cheater to piggyback on her paid exit. She hurt her ankle and was afraid the louse was going to do something more to her, but another gentleman and myself gave him some medicine for his obvious sickness. Putting hands on an elderly, female hopefully, earned him a trip to the dentist,and the station agent, who didn't see or address what had happened, was now in the middle of another heated exchange with someone else refusing to pay or show a proof of payment. We did what we could to assist the elderly woman, and stayed with her until she was securely picked up by her relative.I would urge the riders to be cognizant of their personal safety when both boarding and exiting, until BART can get a handle on what happened with the elder woman or the bicyclist in this video.

It was not activists at all, pre covid bart had plenty of riders who had to go to the office and evaders were not worth the trouble. Now with ridership dropped it needs to recover those lost funds.
This had got to be a cultural thing because I lived in South Korea for over 10 years. I rode the subway almost daily and I never saw anyone attempt to bypass the gate unlawfully.

@@kanank13 I travel a lot, so get to see how many cities are run. SF is a sh*tshow downtown compared to most places I go. Those gates remind me of what is in Boston, which does a decent job. I would say that each station is going to need a guard with the authority to arrest violators for this to really work. But that said it is a big step in the right direction. Also remember that US public transit was built before other transit systems in the world which based a lot of their infrastructure on what we made. So it’s a cycle. If anything, BART is among the most innovative transit systems in the world with 80 mph subway trains, fully walk-through trains, and the very first fully-automated rapid transit system in the world. The gates are nice but enforcement is needed. By blocking a piggybacker, that can cause some confrontations. That's when officers need to step in. It's a start, but let's see a year from now.
Some thoughts 1) This is fantastic as long as the gates can't be forced open, sure there is still bound to be tailgaters but that at least requires someone who pays first and tends to be a small part of the problem. 2) Fare evading as an epidemic in this area, you can see it most on Muni where one doesn't need to get over a gate, but there are people who do it because "why not $2.50 is $2.50" and then there are those who get so apathetic to plight they figure "If no one else is going to pay, why should I?" so stopping it in all forms is perfect. 3) This is the first time I've seen a station agent chastise anyone who attempted to evade, they always are conveniently looking in a different direction, or slouched down in a chair in their booth so they don't have to make eye contact with anyone. 4) The end of 2025 is way too long to get these out, these need come out pronto, hopefully at the very least they start at the biggest places where evading happens, i.e. all of Market Street, other Oakland stops, and then work outward from there, the sooner the better. 5) Lastly for anyone complaining about how these are tested in the lowest income neighborhoods, if you are low enough income you can get a "low income Clipper card" and all fares are 50% off.

Point 4) the problem is disruption rather than cost. If you install the gates faster, the disruption of regular operations will be much worse. A step-by-step installation allows for operations to continue with minimal disruption. 5) In my city low-income specific pass cards go as low as 75% off and even 100% off. It's mostly situation-specific so you have different levels. As 50% can still be too much for some people living hand to mouth and worsening social spiraling. A 75% to 100% rebate pass card allows better outcomes and prevent some "social stalling". The network being already mostly financed by public funds, with the riders only paying about 30% of the ticket actual cost. (So a 75% rebate card is 75% off the 30% paid by riders).
That's the issue. It can't...without causing other issues.. If they shorten the time, it could slam on the actual paying customer, their bag, luggage or whatever other personal item that may take longer to clear. It will also not prevent someone that stay directly behind the paying customer like a Velcro and try to walk through. There were some work done using face/body recognition to dynamically adjust the gate closing time, but then it could be risky and lead to privacy concerns. There are solutions like double gates to ensure only one person in the "decontamination" space. All of that will increase cost and add other types of delays and risks.
You realize this isn’t easy right? If it knocks over a disabled person or gets caught on someone’s chain it could cause issues. Maybe AI thats trained to detect when someone is completely through (motion sensors aren’t accurate enough) otherwise I think it’s difficult
Worked For BART back in the 80's in one of the engineering departments as a clerk. Good grief some of these guys are lazy. Overpaid and do nothing. Back in those days phones didn't have a voicemail, and clerks took phone messages for all the engineers. Two engineers who I reported, were signing out on the out board being on the system, but actually taking care of personal stuff, like taking care of tenants apartments. One of the engineers were in charge of the faregates who did nothing but sit there and complain that the clerks weren't giving him the "clerical support" he needed such as typing up his Toastmasters speech and a clerk refused saying it wasn't BART related. Some calls were from the engineer's tenants of buildings they owned complaining that garbage disposals weren't working, roofs leaking. I threw a fit. Its been a few decades since and they are no longer there. I don't work there anymore either. Hated it. This project could have been handled years ago, typical management at BART couldn't even do that. Can just imagine what is like there now.
The bicyclist that didnt let the attempted fare evader tailgate him is how we should all behave. It's been annoying to see people hop the short turnstiles into bart stations. The audacity and entitled behavior doesnt even shock me anymore. Maybe the old turnstiles worked decades ago in keeping order, but upgrades are long overdue.

About time, never understood why they didn’t put in the old-style 9ft turnstiles like other cities in the first place. This will cut down on the druggies and homeless using BART as a free service and intimidating paying passengers.
They said they didnt want the stations to be ugly like NYC... BART folks dont have common sense sometimes... They want esthetics instead of practicality... I know... I was a cop there for almost 20 years... I even warned them against the secondary fare gates at Balboa Park... They didnt listen... And it turned into what we affecionatly called "the East Bay express..." Sneak on the elevator at Coliseum or Bay Fair and sneak out to go to SF City College at Balboa Park or SF State at Daly City...
To be fair, most of evaders tend to do out of convenience and out of lack of consequence. It's going to suddenly be a lot less convenient to bypass the gates, creating the incentive to pay instead. It probably won't stop those with actual dedication to not paying tho.

Here in Moscow having someone follow you through the fare gates is a very familiar sight yeah. They are about as tall as BART's and made out of glass. Been in service for over a decade now. There's no stopping those who don't want to pay. That's why our trains are staffed by ticket officers and security to catch those who get onboard without a ticket. I personally find that our system just works. Though I do hope BART has an option to quickly disable those gates in case of an emergency that comes with the need to evacuate people quickly. Though at rush hour, when there are tons of people making huge lines they open up the gates for people to exit as well. People themselves are motivated to tap in and out of stations, because if you don't tap out your card will be blocked and must be re-activated again for a price. PS! 65 cents gets you a one-way train trip with a free transfer to the Moscow Subway.

Want to stop the people following after others to skip the fares? Install a secondary gate about 5-10' after the first that cannot be opened until the first one closes completely. If more than one person is detected inside the two-gates, then force the gates to only allow someone to reverse back out of the entrance. It would be like a turnstile that only allows one person at a time, or a rotating door. Also, if there are populations that need assistance for affording travel, provide such discounted and subsidized ticketing.
From an engineering standpoint, sure, it's Excellent. In reality, do you want to be trapped inside a cubicle with an individual (or worse) as shown at 4:45 ? Automation and more foolproof design is not going to help there.
@@CheezeCracker I thought about this, so my idea was to not "lock/latch" the first gate until the one transiting individual is confirmed to be the sole person in the in between zone. Basically requiring it to be only one person at a time. This could only be exploited by someone preventing the rules follower from exiting. It's just an idea though. I'm sure something can be figured out that's cost effective, functional, and mitigates almost all attempts to exploit the process.
Just like airport immigration gates (the automatic ones)? Kinda overkill, here we don’t even have gates for train except on big stations. The key is make the law and enforce it so that you rather pays than face the consequences, even that way there still be someone evading paying but the total paid passengers will outweigh against the evading passengers.

Allowing people that truly need to fare evade to still fare evade isn't horrible for the system as it's a small minority. Instead by preventing people that can afford to pay from easily fare evading is way more effective for the cost and way more useful.
In Seattle, you must board busses in the front, and pay your fare. However, especially at a few stops, people crowd into the rear entrance to avoid paying the fare. When I'm getting off at such a stop, I exit last, and after stepping out of the bus, I remain in front of the door until it closes. I've had people try to push past me, but at 6'2" people can't really get around me and it's a mistake for people to try to push me. They often think that's so UNFAIR! Too bad, Bub!

in SF muni drivers dont ask for the fare anymore because it was a common problem for them to be attacked by people who didnt want to pay. yeah the 2022 study of fare evasion created a hit list of the worst stations. They also want to put in facial recognition to catch vandals and evaders after the gates go in. in 2030's of you wrote on the walls and you walk into a bart station you will likely be arrested and trespassed permanently from the system. The proposed changes have this in mind.
@@xedralya Have you been to other BART stations. Plenty of them are one way in and out of the station. Try take a look at Fruitvale, Coliseum, San Leandro, Bay Fair and even Fremont stations. Only some of those in SF people can jump over barrier. If you don't get offenders, what is the point to see how well the gate work since you don't see much difference.
This should have been in place 50 years ago. I remember fare evading passengers when I was in high school in the early 1970s. BART could have paid for this kind of gating back then and kept lower rates by making sure every passenger paid their fair share. They might to add light activated sensors to close the gates as soon as 1 person goes through, rather than relying on a time delay.

these are better, you get people stuck in those. lots of other options to block tailgaters. The cheapest is to charge the person being tailgated twice. In places they do that you get your _ss beat for trying.

Fabric seats (at least here in London) are nice and somehow cleaner than the plastic ones in NYC Broad gauge doesn't make that big of a difference and most systems anyways order semi or fully custom trains This isn't Asia. So don't expect Asian prices. (Also BART is only 3 to 5 times more expensive than Taipei, but the median salary in San Francisco is more than 3 times as high. So BART isn't actually that much more expensive to the average person)

You could try ticketing, fining and ultimately arresting offenders. A third offense resulting in a 30 days in jail can really work wonders. Spend 30 days and you can back out with 30 days lost income and all of the great things that come with that.
I don't use BART but most systems work where you pay when leaving because it costs more to ride further. When you enter a station, it records your entry point in their system, then when you leave and scan your card, it knows where you started and where you ended and charges you based on the distance.

The typical criminal and problematic element on public transit are those who do not pay for it. Solving this issue will ultimately make riders feel safer, and possibly even attract new riders who will actually pay. Public transit is the best way to move large groups of people as adding car lanes has been proven to not reduce traffic at all. Most people I know, do not believe public transit is safe enough to actually use it, nor consistent enough. We should be working harder to replicate what our European friends have accomplished, or even better what the Japanese have accomplished.

I don't take BART very much anymore, but I used to sense people coming up behind me, and intentionally wait a moment to dart through so that it closed right behind me. I mean, if they jump over, then that's that. But they won't get through an open gate on my dime, lol.

Not just Japan. I travel all over for my work. In most parts of Asia, even in China, they leave the gates open during peak commute hours to speed up the process. This is a societal and political issue of not enforcing rules and laws. I am very sure these gates will soon be branded as racist gates.

I rode BART for years, and there were many times when people would sneak up close to me, and try to get in or out on my ticket. I learned to scan my Clipper, step through and quickly STOP and let the gate close before the other person could get through. It worked, but it would piss people off and many times I had to deal with someone screaming in my face. Some people feel they don't ever have to pay for anything. Shame really.

I've literally been saying since the 90's that they should have these. Even back then I would regularly see people just jump over. This should help keep most of the druggies who just use the trains to sleep on all day off the trains and help BART's bottom line at the same time.

I was in Seattle at a hotel where room cards are used to access the elevators 24/7. A scruffy looking guy got on the elevator and did not have his card. He was stalling in hopes someone would let him access the floors. People on the elevator hailed an employee and asked them to help him. We must remain vigilant as more people are simply thieves prepared to override security measures.

My local transit agency is very mediocre and recently installed fare gates without considering so many things like student bus passes and peak time fare enforcement. 😂 When the people running the agency are incompetent I don't lose sleep about their bottom line. When American transit agencies stop being garbage people will stop fare evasion.

BART is in the business of selling rides, so the "maybe he doesn't have the money ", is not an acceptable excuse. I saw an older woman shoved from behind because she wasn't moving fast enough for the fare cheater to piggyback on her paid exit. She hurt her ankle and was afraid the louse was going to do something more to her, but another gentleman and myself gave him some medicine for his obvious sickness. Putting hands on an elderly, female hopefully, earned him a trip to the dentist,and the station agent, who didn't see or address what had happened, was now in the middle of another heated exchange with someone else refusing to pay or show a proof of payment. We did what we could to assist the elderly woman, and stayed with her until she was securely picked up by her relative.I would urge the riders to be cognizant of their personal safety when both boarding and exiting, until BART can get a handle on what happened with the elder woman or the bicyclist in this video.

Those gates remind me of what is in Boston, which does a decent job. I would say that each station is going to need a guard with the authority to arrest violators for this to really work.

The gates are nice but enforcement is needed. By blocking a piggybacker, that can cause some confrontations. That's when officers need to step in. It's a start, but let's see a year from now.

Some thoughts 1) This is fantastic as long as the gates can't be forced open, sure there is still bound to be tailgaters but that at least requires someone who pays first and tends to be a small part of the problem. 2) Fare evading as an epidemic in this area, you can see it most on Muni where one doesn't need to get over a gate, but there are people who do it because "why not $2.50 is $2.50" and then there are those who get so apathetic to plight they figure "If no one else is going to pay, why should I?" so stopping it in all forms is perfect. 3) This is the first time I've seen a station agent chastise anyone who attempted to evade, they always are conveniently looking in a different direction, or slouched down in a chair in their booth so they don't have to make eye contact with anyone. 4) The end of 2025 is way too long to get these out, these need come out pronto, hopefully at the very least they start at the biggest places where evading happens, i.e. all of Market Street, other Oakland stops, and then work outward from there, the sooner the better. 5) Lastly for anyone complaining about how these are tested in the lowest income neighborhoods, if you are low enough income you can get a "low income Clipper card" and all fares are 50% off.

Point 4) the problem is disruption rather than cost. If you install the gates faster, the disruption of regular operations will be much worse.
A step-by-step installation allows for operations to continue with minimal disruption.
5) In my city low-income specific pass cards go as low as 75% off and even 100% off. It's mostly situation-specific so you have different levels.
As 50% can still be too much for some people living hand to mouth and worsening social spiraling.
A 75% to 100% rebate pass card allows better outcomes and prevent some "social stalling".
The network being already mostly financed by public funds, with the riders only paying about 30% of the ticket actual cost. (So a 75% rebate card is 75% off the 30% paid by riders).
Bart now needs to figure out a way so that the gates don’t stay open long enough so a non-paying customer can walk through behind a paying customer.

That's the issue. It can't...without causing other issues.. If they shorten the time, it could slam on the actual paying customer, their bag, luggage or whatever other personal item that may take longer to clear. It will also not prevent someone that stay directly behind the paying customer like a Velcro and try to walk through. There were some work done using face/body recognition to dynamically adjust the gate closing time, but then it could be risky and lead to privacy concerns. There are solutions like double gates to ensure only one person in the "decontamination" space. All of that will increase cost and add other types of delays and risks.
what exactly do you want to do with a mom pushing a baby stroller? get mangled by a steel door over a few dollars?

Worked For BART back in the 80's in one of the engineering departments as a clerk. Good grief some of these guys are lazy. Overpaid and do nothing. Back in those days phones didn't have a voicemail, and clerks took phone messages for all the engineers. Two engineers who I reported, were signing out on the out board being on the system, but actually taking care of personal stuff, like taking care of tenants apartments. One of the engineers were in charge of the faregates who did nothing but sit there and complain that the clerks weren't giving him the "clerical support" he needed such as typing up his Toastmasters speech and a clerk refused saying it wasn't BART related. Some calls were from the engineer's tenants of buildings they owned complaining that garbage disposals weren't working, roofs leaking. I threw a fit. Its been a few decades since and they are no longer there. I don't work there anymore either. Hated it. This project could have been handled years ago, typical management at BART couldn't even do that. Can just imagine what is like there now.

About time, never understood why they didn’t put in the old-style 9ft turnstiles like other cities in the first place. This will cut down on the druggies and homeless using BART as a free service and intimidating paying passengers.

Here in Moscow having someone follow you through the fare gates is a very familiar sight yeah. They are about as tall as BART's and made out of glass. Been in service for over a decade now. There's no stopping those who don't want to pay. That's why our trains are staffed by ticket officers and security to catch those who get onboard without a ticket. I personally find that our system just works. Though I do hope BART has an option to quickly disable those gates in case of an emergency that comes with the need to evacuate people quickly. Though at rush hour, when there are tons of people making huge lines they open up the gates for people to exit as well. People themselves are motivated to tap in and out of stations, because if you don't tap out your card will be blocked and must be re-activated again for a price. PS! 65 cents gets you a one-way train trip with a free transfer to the Moscow Subway.

Want to stop the people following after others to skip the fares?
Install a secondary gate about 5-10' after the first that cannot be opened until the first one closes completely.
If more than one person is detected inside the two-gates, then force the gates to only allow someone to reverse back out of the entrance.
It would be like a turnstile that only allows one person at a time, or a rotating door.
Also, if there are populations that need assistance for affording travel, provide such discounted and subsidized ticketing.
From an engineering standpoint, sure, it's Excellent. In reality, do you want to be trapped inside a cubicle with an individual (or worse) as shown at 4:45 ? Automation and more foolproof design is not going to help there.

Basically requiring it to be only one person at a time.
This could only be exploited by someone preventing the rules follower from exiting.
It's just an idea though.
I'm sure something can be figured out that's cost effective, functional, and mitigates almost all attempts to exploit the process.

Just like airport immigration gates (the automatic ones)? Kinda overkill, here we don’t even have gates for train except on big stations. The key is make the law and enforce it so that you rather pays than face the consequences, even that way there still be someone evading paying but the total paid passengers will outweigh against the evading passengers.

Allowing people that truly need to fare evade to still fare evade isn't horrible for the system as it's a small minority. Instead by preventing people that can afford to pay from easily fare evading is way more effective for the cost and way more useful.

In Seattle, you must board busses in the front, and pay your fare.
However, especially at a few stops, people crowd into the rear entrance to avoid paying the fare.
When I'm getting off at such a stop, I exit last, and after stepping out of the bus, I remain in front of the door until it closes.
I've had people try to push past me, but at 6'2" people can't really get around me and it's a mistake for people to try to push me. They often think that's so UNFAIR!

in SF muni drivers dont ask for the fare anymore because it was a common problem for them to be attacked by people who didnt want to pay. Im 6ft5 and i have a large afro I cant even stand up in the muni train without bending over but I wouldnt be trying to control random people like that some people are insane, evil, armed and sensitive.

yeah the 2022 study of fare evasion created a hit list of the worst stations. They also want to put in facial recognition to catch vandals and evaders after the gates go in. in 2030's of you wrote on the walls and you walk into a bart station you will likely be arrested and trespassed permanently from the system. The proposed changes have this in mind.

@@xedralya Have you been to other BART stations. Plenty of them are one way in and out of the station. Try take a look at Fruitvale, Coliseum, San Leandro, Bay Fair and even Fremont stations. Only some of those in SF people can jump over barrier. If you don't get offenders, what is the point to see how well the gate work since you don't see much difference.
This should have been in place 50 years ago. I remember fare evading passengers when I was in high school in the early 1970s. BART could have paid for this kind of gating back then and kept lower rates by making sure every passenger paid their fair share. They might to add light activated sensors to close the gates as soon as 1 person goes through, rather than relying on a time delay.
BART originally wanted OPEN gates. I was born in 73'.

these are better, you get people stuck in those. lots of other options to block tailgaters. The cheapest is to charge the person being tailgated twice. In places they do that you get your _ss beat for trying.

Until all stations are hardened, people will add the bare minimum to their clipper card and then jump to exit, still not paying full fare.

You could try ticketing, fining and ultimately arresting offenders. A third offense resulting in a 30 days in jail can really work wonders. Spend 30 days and you can back out with 30 days lost income and all of the great things that come with that.

I don't use BART but most systems work where you pay when leaving because it costs more to ride further. When you enter a station, it records your entry point in their system, then when you leave and scan your card, it knows where you started and where you ended and charges you based on the distance.
