It drives my up the wall when science communicators--of all people--say, "It's just a theory," while what they really mean to say is, "It's just a hypothesis." This doesn't help scientists in communicating that REAL theories (e.g., the theory of evolution) are actually well researched and substantiated.

If you want a huge does of science and a massive burst of learning. Do a search for Yale ASTR 160. Its a online Yale course its about 24 hours in length (24 parts) and covers black holes, planetary movements, and hole huge host of other funky stuff. Really great stuff. I just mention this cause the whole idea of super massive gravity and the compression of mass is covered in one of the segments. (and no it doesn't need mega math, the teacher keeps it simple)
this is intruiging a cristal formed by water but in prescence of fire.=) it amazes me how far humans are willing to go to know their roots. ...the rocks you speak of do not FORM from volcano magma, they are simply pushed out from deep within the earth out of the crust. So OBVIOUSLY, those rocks could be hundreds of thousands or even millions of years old, REGARDLESS of when the volcano erupted.

first of all, it's a different kind of radiometric dating that is used to date the age of rocks, because CARBON dating is used to date organisms that were once alive; once they die, the carbon in their body starts to decay at a steady rate that is measurable and is reliable up to around 60 000 years.
The zircon was probably dated using Uranium-lead dating, which is accurate up to BILLIONS of years because its half-life can be up to 4.5 billions years.

uhh, if those trees are dated to be 20 000 years old, than that would mean that they were alive WAY AFTER the eruption, if the eruption is found to be BILLIONS of years old. Duh. This is simple logic and anybody who has even stepped into a school would understand this.
What about the existance of dinosaurs, of which there is no ambiguity, that are dated to be millions of years old. This in itself, throws out any theory of the Earth being young.

i dont see how anyone (even professors, geologists, archaeologists and scientists) can know these dates...i dont belive these figures at all. there are too many variables and scanarios that happen to know these dates. people should just accept that we wont truly ever know.
Besides, in religion, Adam and Eve were created AFTER the creation of the Earth. How long was the Earth there for, is up for debate and as far as I'm concerned, I agree with these scientists, because, guess what? God has also asked us to seak knowledge till the day we die.

I agree. My dad once told me "If you saw a watch laying on the ground would you think it evolved there? Humans are much more complicated than watches, so why would you think they evolved?" I don't see how it seems even logically posible that just "somehow" life was created and we all developed from single cell organisms into fully functioning creatures with brains, and lives, and death, and all the complicated things about us. Even something as simple as sweat doesn't seem logical in evolution.

If you look at what Science has found about the Earth, they have found that there were several times the planet was almost completely covered in water. The Bible does not cover what happened between the time God created Earth and the time he decided to create humankind. Millions of years could have past, logically so when looking at Dinosaurs and other extinct creatures.The Bible is just text on the history of a faith and a guideline for that faith. Not a science book.

actually if you look at the forests around Mt. St. Helens you'll see that the trees around that were alive before the eruption now are carbon dated to 20000 years. So science does have it's drawbacks.
