  • What makes crystals grow into their signature shapes? Dig into the atomic patterns and unique properties of crystals.
    --
Many crystals have signature shapes- like the cascade of pointed quartz or a pile of galena cubes. Every crystal’s atoms have a defining feature: their organized, repeating pattern. The pattern isn't restricted to minerals- sand, ice, metals and DNA also have crystalline structures. So what causes them to grow into these shapes again and again? Graham Baird dives into the unique properties of crystals.

When I was a young teenager about fourteen years old this was in 1966 (I am 67 now) I saw a piece of quartz crystal in a local gem store. I wanted it so much that my chest ached when I looked at it through the store window. I saved up my allowance until I had enough money to purchase it. I really loved that Crystal and kept it all these years. I collected other stones over the years but that original one was always the centerpiece of my collection. I had a room in the basement where I had an altar where I kept all my stones. Well, my wife at one point decided that she was going to clean out our basement, I and hurt to say this but she threw away all my stones including the original crystal I had purchased as a young boy. (She's not a bad person just an organization and clean freak, sometimes she goes into cleaning frenzies and throws away anything in her path. My mother was like that also and threw away all my 1960 baseball cards while I was serving in the military). Anyway, I would like to know why I still yearn for that particular piece of quartz crystal I actually feel a pain in my heart when I think of it. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thank you Vito.

      To William Quattrocento:
Those who see no Emotional nor Spiritual value may not yet ready to accept “there is more to the universe than (humans) have explored,” thus preventing investigation into any other evidence via scientific methods. We have many more tools to advance our search, our hunger for Truth. Study is required to establish what if any sensory influences occur from humans to known crystalline structures. Why hard science refuses is beyond anyone who has an open, yet questioning mind. I challenge practitioners of science research and spiritual research to collaborate to discover new possibilities.
Loosing a crystal which called to you as you described it only to see it discarded by someone you love-who chose not to honor your belief system/attachment to your life long service to the crystals, arrangement of them on your alter, or simple question how to best handle or help relocate your alter before touching them! Was your wife aware of the story about your crystals?
How about your alter? Are you hiding this aspect of your life? Why did your wife or mother think they had the right to throw out what was not theirs. Avoid blame for all of family and self. Go find crystals which resonate with you (best done in shops that let customers hold each crystal long enough to feel a frequency/connection. Try metaphysical unaltered options.)
You have changed over time you may not ever establish the same feeling you enjoyed with your lost collection. You experienced Grief over your loss anything you care about causes your pain. Sounds like you are gifted sensitive given your attraction to your 1st crystal. Best healing for deep wounds…meditation check out Buddhism, Hinduism, Theosophical Society, etc. Good Luck journey away brings us to ourselves as Baba Ram Dos said, Be Here Now!

Perhaps it hasnt been entirely scientifically proven yet, but personally I believe in subtle energy patterns emminating from all things, whether thats quartz or trees or humans. You might even think of the quartz crystal as being a relatively "blank" canvas that could reflect or absorb the energy you are putting out. Just as everyone you have connected with are different because of your connection, and you are different because of your interactions with them, all aspects of the universe contain a kind of ghost-image of the energies they have interacted with - essentially memories. The experiments about having two jars of moldy rice that you either express kindness or meanness towards are good examples of this, showing that the mold can remember the energy sent to it, and grows healthy or unhealthy accordingly.
I say this all because I do believe that the love you gave that crystal is strong, and clearly from your comment, the connection still exists within you. To attract the crystal back into your life, you merely need to open to the possibility that it can find you again. It probably wont happen right away, but if you believe that its not just possible, but inevitable that the crystal finds its way back to you, it invariably will. (I find this to be very helpful whenever I've lost anything. If I am thinking "oh no I lost it, theres no way I’m gunna be able to find it!" The item is completely lost. The second I open up, bang, there it is. Its happened hundreds of times lol.) Even if it doesn't, it'll probably feel better to imagine it will, so whats the harm in it? 😉 all you gotta do is believe that if its true love, itll always find its way back haha! Cheers, and good luck!

Sounds like it represented a time that you long for but is no longer accessible. Pangs of nostalgia are real! I’m sorry the quartz is lost to you. Maybe it will help to think of it landing in a new home because someone else needed it more. 🙏

At 2:40 you may notice the frame rate is low. At first that bothered me, but then I remembered that rendering 3D models with that many reflections and opacity takes a lot of computing power.
Overall we see very few 3D animation styles on TED-Ed videos, and I think it was a great choice for this video about 3D crystalline structures. Great vid!

the "these properties may not have any bearing on human emotional needs" seemed like shade. i have a b.s. in geology and didn't think crystals had any healing properties until i had my own experiences after i earned my degree. keep an open mind :) just because a phenomenon can't be explained with science doesn't mean it's not real and happening. sometimes it just means our human brains aren't able to understand and explain it using the science we currently know. yet ;)

I love the scientific part and/but everything is energy vibrating at different frequencies too. Me, you, Mother Nature, the cosmos, we all have consciousness. Our bones are made of minerals; crystals are made of minerals. We aren't taught about that connection in school. I, too, have had my own extraordinary experiences that keeps me open minded and searching. Thanks for your comment. Refreshing..Oh-and gold doesn't come from this planet? How fascinating!
