Loud Knocking/Clicking when A/C is turned on

- Looking for any feedback or resolution to fix this knocking/clicking noise that I am hearing in a Jeep Patriot 2010. When I start car everything sounds normal but as soon as I turn on the ac for cold or hot the noise begins and never stops it even continues while driving. Still get cold on hot air with no issues I just don't want to keep running the system with that noise. Please leave any helpful comments. Thank you
Who else was relieved as hell when they realized their noise was this and not rod knock?

I swear! It's been making this noise a couple weeks. Today I just realized it was only when the AC is on. Looked it up on here and sounds just like this. What a relief.

Mine sounded so bad on my 5.4 expedition that I thought the engine was bad, stalled when I was driving and I turned off ac to hear what it sounds like and problem went away 😅
I had same thing happening on a 01 suburban. It had the tensioner jack hammering when ac was on. Replaced tensioner 2 times. Very short lived. Come to find out that the ac compressor sitting at the bottom made for sludge build up in the system to settle in it. Replaced compressor and dryer and haven't had a problem in 5 years.

Same exact noise in my 2014 Jeep Compass. To begin with we thought it to be the timing chain tensioner or a rod knocking. I quickly discovered after turning on the ac that it is when the noise began and stopped (turned off ac). After finding this video, as well as similar videos, we were quickly able to diagnose it as the ac compressor going bad. Still not ideal but better than the alternative😅

Idler puller or any other pulleys connected to the serpentine belt. Sometimes the bearings in these pulleys are worn out. Could also be the tensioner too.

Same noise in my 2007 Jeep Liberty. My AC compressor is good. The AC coil is still good. Turns out it's just the AC clutch . You might want to check that out. The AC compressor clutch.
Had you fix it by just replacing the clutch? Noisy compressor clutch. Same problem here, shop says need compressor replaced..😥
Definitely compressor. I had the same problem. Best to replace everything as a kit. Rock Auto has the kit for under $400
My 1995 Sunfire started doing this some months after replacing the compressor. It is cooling good though! I changed the tensioner and the belt, went for a while then returned. I think it is the compressor.
I have an 06 f150 Xlt 4.6 also with a click from the A/c compressor. Not as prominent as yours but I have cold air coming. Not sure what it is maybe a low charge. Gonna diagnose it and check back.
My 2009 corolla is doing this only when the ac is on. Im guessing the clutch or compressor but ac is cold. I manually turned the compressor and don't feel any thing odd. I turned the idler pulley as well and hear a slight noise but doesn't seem to be the culprit as it only makes the noise when the ac is on.
I just had my coil replaced as the belt broke and it wiped out the wire and harness. Now it makes this loud rattling noise mostly on cold start and very bad with the AC on, but only when you hit the gas. Any ideas? If I turn the AC off it does it for a bit but then eventually goes away, but the car still doesnt sound as it was before.
Maybe compressor clutch needs adjusting if ac temperature is not changing also checking tensioner for misalignment and mounting bolts to your pulley systems. Another test turn only fan on w/o compressor, if no noise suspect belt pulley system

According to all the suggestions in the comments, you need to replace every single part in the entire vehicle.

My 2010 Camry id doing the same, but it stops after the car is warmed up. I hope the problem does not get worse with this extreme heat wave most of the USA is experiencing. AC is ice cold. Just added A/C Pro Synthetic Refrigerant in May. So easy that even I could do it. Temp is now 20 degrees colder.
For anyone having the same noise and looking for answers, i had the exact same noise (it also had a hard time making cold air, even more at idle/slow speed), so i replaced the ac compressor and the noise was completely gone. Hope it helps anyone !
I have the same problem with my Honda CRV no noise on low put on high it starts heat works fine A.c. blows nothing but hot with a pressure reading of 80

04 Honda CR-V 4cyl.. Same issue.. thought it was the compressor.. place a hose to listen where the noise is coming from.. the noise is not loudest when listening to the compressor.. it's loudest when at the harmonic balancer area and toward the middle of engine above the balancer.. does not seem to be the tensioner/pulley...

Hey Aaron & all the guys here, my car was literrally like this last week whenever I switch on the AC...and now its been solved...only 2 major culprits behind this either its the pulley tensioner (watch if its moving / shaking around when spinning) or the compressor itself...mine was the compressor...I bought a used original compressor from car yard & it solved the problem...hope its helping

Same thing happened on a 6.0 Chevy. It was the tensioner pulley. But it only does it when you give it gas, doesn't do it while idle or if then a/c is off iy won't do it.
Same problem with my honda. Did you find out what was making the loud clicking sound?
It is for the faulty motor for opening and closing fresh air entry through air conditioner suction. You will get the noise if you are using the AC in cabin air recirculating mode or trying to switvhing it. Just try to switch it off or vice versa, this sound will stop. So solution is to change the motor which operates to open or close the fresh air entry for AC. Usually this motor can be accessed behind the glove box towards bottom side may be.
Hello umm so I did what you suggested, I have a Nissan altima 2006 and when I turn it to fan it stop but cabin it makes the noise.. What is the part called.. U said motor but.. Can you specify.. Or would u know by aany chance where it is located in? Thank you for your time
@@JayJay-hm8ru it should be behind the glove box. Open the glove box compartment. It should be located just below. You can disconnect its connection from the wiring socket. Hope it helps.

I opened it but there was just the filter behind the glove compartment.. Hmmm

I'm having same issue with my ford ranger same knocking sound when ac is turned on, did you ever find out what it was?
I Ordered the Magneto, Pulley and Clutch ,,, as I was taking the Magneto off I found the 3 screws Holding the Magneto in Place were all Loose ,,,allowing it to vibrate and knock against the Pulley,, I tightened all the screws up with blue "loc-Tite" . replaced everything and returned the $106.00 repair kit ,,, it cost $00.00 to fix it and about 4 hrs. of investigating ! Rueben Orelue was the stupid one with his comment ! Hope this helps someone !

my vw jetta 1.9 tdi also same noise while ac on or headlight on. if i increase load (electrical) noise increasing.. any sujjestion .. i tested with screwdriver ( ear test) noise comming from tensioner... i checked tensioner wheel bearing. looks good. still noise comming

I had this problem. Turns out it was the bolts holding the compressor on. I found out the hard way. When my compressor finally came off. Which cause my belt to come off.

Tensioner, compressor, actuator check this 3 things. One of this will be the problem. Dew to my clutch on the compressor it messed up my tensioner or vice versa. I don't know what came first I just know both were messed up.

What is the solution? Similar problem with my car, the car runs smoothly without AC but as soon as I turned on the AC the compressor/ pulley makes the same noise.

Having the same issue. Replaced compressor and still same. Sounds like it’s coming from the alternator.
Mine does this too with the a/c on but it’s super loud it’s stops when the a/c is off but it starts again when come to a complete stop with no a/c . Could that still be the problem?

I added pag oil to my ride, clicking tapping noise has stopped and ac is blowing colder. Make sure you add the right type of ac compressor oil, there’s several type and the right amount.

I have a 2012 Jeep Patriot. It's the AC clutch. The bearing is out and that's why you hear the grinding noise.
What about knocking or rattle like that video you heard.?

My car AC has the rattling sound but the AC is cooling well. If I stop the AC the noise goes away. I have been advised by the Car Dealer/Service to change the AC compressor and condenser. I am not comfortable with that as the AC is cooling well.

Yes you can drive it without the ac clutch working but you need the ac compressor pulley still for your belt. In other words don't turn on your ac. But replace it when you can

Hi.. I have an Abarth Punto.. Same TJet engine.. Same issue.. The compressor is costly but everyone I go to suggests changing the entire compressor rather than the bearing, but somehow I suspect it's the bearings..

Did you have to change out the whole Compressor or just the Ac Clutch Assembly if you were able to only change that.?. I have pretty much that same problem so I seen my AC Pulley attached to the Compressor is wobbling while running and I smell some type of smell.!.

My 2012 Jeep Compass was just doing this exact same thing, I took it into the dealership and it was my air compressor, I replaced my air compressor and the noise stopped.
Having the same in my compass 2014.. ac guy tild me is the “flapper” of the ac compressor, whatever that means… so repair or new ac comp…

Im having this same issue at the moment. Rattling sound comes up when the gear is changed from park position then at a low RPM. It gets worse when the AC is turned on. Anyone found the solution yet? I've changed the belt, tensioner and yet nothing has changed

Bad a/c compressor. My friend's Chevy Sonic did the same thing we installed a new compressor and now he has a/c without the rod knock sound. He actually had his car towed home, it was that bad. Also he didn't want to make things worse.

Its 80% your AC compressor is going bad. Does your AC blows cool air when you're driving but when at a standstill does it Blow hot? If it does then it's your AC compressor
@@frederickwalters2729 no it blows cool and fine either way. Just the knocking noice gets bad while idling.
@@beckyf8139 tell your husband to check your pulley tensioner or you can check it yourself to see if it's bouncing around when the AC is switched on

why would it be the engine if it only makes the noise with the ac on?
Either ac or the tensioner with the added parasitic drag of the ac clutch engaged making it hop back and forth then when ac off it spins easier and smoother...thats what I'd think but idk about how it'd be the engine

AC pulley bearing broken
i had a faint noise in the ac compressor when turned on. I sprayed WD40 on the clutch and it went away. Donot spray wd40 on the belt or the pully outer surface as belt will slip

I took my Jeep to the dealership for this noise yesterday... and they quoted me $2510 because the AC compressor basically shattered and shot metal shrapnel into the lines 😭😭😭 I feel so ripped off because 2.5k is so much for a $200 part... at least I don't feel alone since you are also being quoted 2.5k.
Yep I know how it feels I have to change out a few things on my Jeep like the water pump and my thermostat now my just a clutch is what I need replaced not the compressor coils are good. It just the AC clutch
@@cheryla3844 On my channel I show you how to diy for under 400 and it's not hard to do in case you still need repairs. That's 400 for complete ac system. Condenser, accumulator and new ac compressor along with flushing the complete system
