    *Sorry for the rough switching in and out of the insert. The unit has no true bypass switch, so I was stuck turning Pipeline on and off in Studio One.

    This video was awesome man I was wondering the same thing with the fast attack being slow and the slow being fast. I knew I was bugging out lol. Very good compressor I have it as my alternative to my Distressor. Bluey has more weight

    Ahh man, I was so confused about the Attack on my unit! Glad to have this clarified. Release behaves as a typical 1176 but the attack is in reverse to that, I was concerned mine was faulty. Feel better now! Thanks for the video : )

    That all buttons in setting was nice with that distortion! Would sound good on a grunge record. Also what is the CLA setting?

    • @redshedrecords
      @redshedrecords  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's got ALL the mojo 🙌 The CLA setting is Input at 30, output at 18, attack at 3, and release at 7. Ratio on 4.

    I realize this thread is a few years old but I'm looking for some help with my BLA Bluey. I only get meter showing compression action when I crank the input of the unit up clock wise starts working around 5 o'clock, but then I need to put output down to 7 or 8 o'clock so as to not overload my recording unit. . It seems like the unit only recognizes Mic input that way. If I do the "CLA Setting" as mentioned, I get zero compression. I've tried different gain staging with mic pre. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong or if unit could possible be defective. My chain is Mic-Mic Pre-BLA Bluey-Input of recording unit.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm having quite a bit of trouble with my brand new Bluey. Depending on which ratio knobs I press and the other controls, sometimes the unit starts to 'blow up' all of a sudden. Anyone else noticed any of these problems? Here's a link to a short video I made to show what's happening: th-cam.com/video/1v5B2VFbk7k/w-d-xo.html. I've reached out to BLA, but they haven't responded so far.

      I also notice when I'm punching between ratios the unit seems to have a bit if a signal spike for a split second. Probably normal. Especially when going down in numbers. If you can manage to get all the buttons to be DEpressed (out not in) it will REALLY blow up! It's quite the sound if you need something that sounds bananas. Hope this helps!

    I'm confused - isn't fast clockwise, slow anti clockwise on this unit for both attack and release? Aka 7 is the fastest, 1 the slowest?

    • @redshedrecords
      @redshedrecords  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I assumed too until I tried it on snare, and the attack seemed backwards! So I called Black Lion Audio to ask and they confirmed that the attack knob is backwards where CW is slow and CCW is fast. They claimed the original 1176 Rev A units are also this way. Very interesting!

    • @bp74434
      @bp74434 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redshedrecords Strange, I'm getting the opposite - it grabs the bass drum quicker on 7, giving it that 'pop' and doesn't grab until it's too late on 1. Release is definitely 1 longest, 7 fastest. Original units are like this.

    • @redshedrecords
      @redshedrecords  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bp74434 Interesting! That pop you are hearing on 7 should be the transient coming through, meaning a slower attack, while 1 its grabbing the transient quick enough so you aren't hearing it. Try it on an aggressively picked bass and see which on is poppier. 7 should be poppier, since it's the slow setting, while 1 should be smoother on the plucks. Call BLA yourself too and ask! Maybe the guy I talked to was confused or something 🤔 All the best!

  • @richardthelionheart01

    Here is the problem - BLA installed a 'buffer' that replicated the sound of the compressor going into his SSL channel strip - as to make a complete package of his sound for the end user - BUT, that means if you ACTUALLY HAVE an SSL, or are say - doing a shootout at CLA's studio as Sweetwater did - you are in effect STACKING the buffer.
    You get it? The shootout at CLA's studio was useless, and you could audibly here a difference, but they never addressed this fact. They were doubling the buffer effect of CLA's SSL channel strip by sending Bluey's SSL buffered signal INTO CLA's actual SSL - a signal chain they were trying to replicate. So UNFORTUNATELY - they didn't make this with Pro Studios in mind, but almost project studio only types with the hardwired buffer. Did they not think actual studios with SSL's would buy this? They should have just made the physical unit as is, and perhaps offered a plug in SSL channel buffer for 'completists' who are basically plugging straight into the computer. Ahhhh, hindsight.

      If you can afford a $100,000 console, you can afford a real 1176. I think this product is marketed correctly.

    • @richardthelionheart01
      @richardthelionheart01 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NoQualmsTheArtist Really? This is supposed to be a 'Unicorn'. This is a mis-wired one of one 76 in all of existence. You are saying someone with an SSL should be hamstrung by a buffer because he wants to experiment with CLA's hardware unit? Come on, that's unfair.
      It's not a matter of affording, but perhaps the eventual availability of an item that has only so many units in existence, a real 76.. For example - if CLA himself was working a remote mix session away from his studio - if he plugged in his own BLA hardware to emulate working at his home studio - he would experience this buffer issue as well. And what of engineers that rent out studios and bring there go to units for the sessions - again - plugging in and stacking the buffers.
      It was an odd choice.

    • @NoQualmsTheArtist
      @NoQualmsTheArtist ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richardthelionheart01 you can always buy one of the many other 1176 clones on the market. This one fills a niche the others don't and that's good marketing. If you don't like it don't buy it, there's no need to bash it because it doesn't meet some sort of hypothetical guideline you made up in your own head.

  • @bayphoenix

    All 1176 right is slow (attack & release) and left is fast

    • @redshedrecords
      @redshedrecords  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's usually the case yes, but according to Black Lion Audio, I've confirmed that this unit has a reversed setting. Contact them and see. It also proves true when you run sources through it, like snare for example. More of the transient comes through when the knob is to the right, when it's normally the left providing a puncher sound. Unless I'm crazy 😅
