DIY? I could not do that in a thousand years. I will say you are a well-trained and talented repair artist. In 1972, I backed my Ford Pinto into something and bent the chrome bumper. I bought a new one over the parts counter at the Ford dealer for $22.00 and bolted it on. I preferred those days when repairs were do-able.

Great video Brian! I have a 1988 Toyota MR2 and the rear bumper has a puncture. This is the kind of video that shows how you can keep and repair the OEM bumper cover instead of having to replace it. Keep up the great work! Always looking forward to new videos from you!
You are an amazing body/paint guy and I've learned a lot from you. I'm a third generation but not as good as yourself but I try. That back plate is solid repair. The best luck I've had is also stitching with a soldering iron besides what you do to give the adhesive more to bite to especially on high stress panels. Also another thing that will help with or without a paint booth for dust in a paint job especially for beginners is a ground whether a chain over an a arm or a clip on ground to a grounding rod. Keep up the amazing work.
Absolutely amazing work. I'm noticing people saying they'd rather buy a new bumper, okay so let's work it out then, brand new bumper from dealership (dont forget these are not painted, only primed) prep, paint and labour from a detail shop, cost of vehicle storage and removal and fitting of bumper, looking at £2000 or more. So anybody feel its cheaper to buy a bumper go ahead, it's cheaper to repair or better still breakers yard if lucky to find a good one in the same colour
@@PaintSociety it can be but theres sometimes the issue wether the aftermarket stuff fits, they're not 100% and still require some degree of detail work and time to get the proper fit
If this is my personal vehicle, then I would fix this bumper too because I don't have to worry about paying labor since I can do these repairs myself. I just have to purchase repair and refinish materials which shouldn't be outrageously expensive. That aside, it's a great video he put together covering the repair of plastic bumpers and a great outcome for the repair. If anything the video shows the skill he has as a body tech in performing these repairs. It's hard to find a good tech who churns out great work consistently. New oem bumper can be found online from about 250 to 350 bucks. Quick Google search can give you ballpark figures. It's like a 2016 honda accord coupe. You would have to know how many body hours were charged to fix the dent and then find out what labor rate is. Example, if body repair labor is 75.00/ hour and the customer was charged 4 hours of repair time, then that would be about 300.00 in body labor only, you still have to add the labor to remove and de-trim bumper, then labor time to to pay the refinish tech, then you have to also add money for paint materials. Even at 2 hours repair time for body man, repair can be pricey. I'm all for repairing bumpers when possible, but you do have to consider cost of replacing vs repairing. There's pros and cons for repairing/replacing bumper covers/sheet metal parts in general. Also, he knows it's cheaper to replace this front bumper, but he purposely chose to repair this bumper for his audience (us) so that we can learn more about the repairs done in this industry. Towards end he mentioned it was a used car so just maybe it was something bought at auction by dealer for resale. Used car dept usually gets some sort of internal rate for work done within house that's cheaper than rate set out for regular body shop work for customer vehicles.
Great video! I would have to say for the average DIY in the yard this is likely a little much, but for someone who already has a few tools and some time it would be the most cost efficient route. I do find it hard to believe having that procedure done is a shop would be more cost efficient since i bet there is many hours involved with it.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. Most shop will just scrap the bumper due to the high cost of shop rates. They would just charge the insurance for a new bumper and spend a quarter of the time to gain a better margin.

Great video, very informative. I think this is a tick or two above DIY though. I think in some cases you can probably get a new bumper already painted from an online source for what you will pay to get setup to do this job. Scales, applicators, paint guns, orbital sanders, all the chemicals. At the end of the day you might still have a fairly poorly painted bumper while you learn to control paint spray which not everyone is good at or has the proper air system to run. A lot of little things here that don't imply DIY if you're not already setup with the tools needed.

Those complaining that this is too much work don't have $1000 bumpers. Definitely going to be repairing my own. I have a nasty crack that's going to be a challenge, but best case scenario I don't have to buy a $1000 bumper. Worst case scenario I screw it up, but the bumper is already trash as is.
Another great video, Brian. I've been using the 3M Easy Sand Multipurpose Repair Material 05887 for my bumper repairs and it has worked well. I haven't had to fix anything as big as that hole in that Honda bumper but it's been great for cracks and dents. I'll have to check out the Fusor stuff. Looks like it would be better for larger repairs. I agree with you on repairing bumpers where feasible. The cost of some of these bumpers, even non-CAPA certified aftermarket are astronomical (nearly $1000 for a 2014 Chevy Malibu Non-CAPA bumper with no grills). So I like to repair where I can. Keep up with the great content, brother. It's always a pleasure learning something new from you.

I usually just like to swap them out but I'm in a spot right now with a golf bumper where I can't get one rightnow without paying like 300 usd just for the shipping not counting bumper cost so I might give this a go. Also saw your one with the plastic welding seems interesting

My mom got a hole in her front bumper from a trailer hitch. The hitch punched out a clean hole, and I believe it can be recovered. Labor hours probably wouldn’t be worth it normally, but am gonna try and plastic weld/mold it back into place. My main concern is actually painting it after the repair; it’s a 2012 Camaro so the paint on the rest of the car is somewhat faded. Also worry it might be a difficult color (28U) inferno orange. Edit; The Camaro was already a rebuilt title/lowest end model, so she’s not looking for perfection. However if I do it, I will try for it.

Yes, I know you use wax & grease remover before painting but to touch, sand, re-touch, re-sand could grind some contaminates (oils) from your skin could affect the final product. I don't know if there are any type of oils on our skin after using so muck antiseptic washes all the time, but you never know. Love the videos!!
I would recommend this procedure for hard to replace or ultra expensive bumpers...It's not cost effective on most common daily driver cars where bumper covers are relative cheap.
Brian used all the fancy tools and adhesives out of the respect for the viewers - but we all know he would achieve the same results with chewing gum and cigarette lighter ;)

Before applying epoxy to the inside of the bumper, what about covering the outside repair area with 3 inch box tape so that the epoxy won't stand up on the outside, forcing you to heat, knock down and re-sand. This approach should only require light sanding after the first inside epoxy coat has dried.
Brian, first let me say, I'm loving the channel. Next I want to paint my 2012 Altima. Could you do a fade paint video. The idea is simple, in my head at least. my OEM color on top, then it fades to black. I won't over think it, I know it's just paint. Love the channel.
This is fascinating to watch, and you're obviously very skilled. I'm just wondering if it's cost effective when considering the price of a new bumper panel. I realize the material cost here seems to be very minimal, but the time spent on it appears to be many hours. Might make sense if you're doing it for yourself at home if you happen to enjoy doing that, but would body shops do this, or would they just put a new part on? P.S. I see you addressed my question at the end of the video. Really enjoyed watching your masterful repair.

Hey Brian, say I want to just repaint a bumper a different color and that it doesn’t need any repairs. Am I able to just sand the clear coat down with 800/1000 grit and spray on top of the clear coat? Or do I have to remove the clear and the base coat with 80/150 grit? Thank you in advance 🙏🏽

Hey Brian can you in the future make a video about how psi can change the color lightness/darkness? Maybe I'm wrong but I was told that u can "bury" the Metallics and make a color look darker if you lower the pressure (apply wetter?) And also lighten a color (more metallic sits on top if you UP the pressure? I also noticed that even if you paint a panel one day and the a fender another day, even if the paint came from the same exact pint it can look very different color depending on psi. Thanks

Just use the dolly's, bumper repair bag and spare donor bumper you have lying around. Totally DIY method.
Fix it and send to a paint shop once repair is done.

Usually yeah it's easier to start over with a new bumper, but I've had a few bumpers on limited models that are very hard to find or on backorder

Before applying epoxy to the inside of the bumper, what about covering the outside repair area with 3 inch box tape so that the epoxy won't stand up on the outside, forcing you to heat, knock down and re-sand.
This approach should only require light sanding after the first inside epoxy coat has dried.

Brian, first let me say, I'm loving the channel. Next I want to paint my 2012 Altima. Could you do a fade paint video. The idea is simple, in my head at least. my OEM color on top, then it fades to black. I won't over think it, I know it's just paint. Love the channel.

This is fascinating to watch, and you're obviously very skilled. I'm just wondering if it's cost effective when considering the price of a new bumper panel. I realize the material cost here seems to be very minimal, but the time spent on it appears to be many hours. Might make sense if you're doing it for yourself at home if you happen to enjoy doing that, but would body shops do this, or would they just put a new part on?

Hey Brian, say I want to just repaint a bumper a different color and that it doesn’t need any repairs. Am I able to just sand the clear coat down with 800/1000 grit and spray on top of the clear coat? Or do I have to remove the clear and the base coat with 80/150 grit? Thank you in advance 🙏🏽

Hey Brian can you in the future make a video about how psi can change the color lightness/darkness? Maybe I'm wrong but I was told that u can "bury" the Metallics and make a color look darker if you lower the pressure (apply wetter?) And also lighten a color (more metallic sits on top if you UP the pressure?
I also noticed that even if you paint a panel one day and the a fender another day, even if the paint came from the same exact pint it can look very different color depending on psi. Thanks
