- Arsenal win at Old Trafford to clinch their second Premier League title
Four UEFA Champions League qualification places were up for grabs for the first time and Arsenal ended three seasons of dominance for Manchester United as they clinched the title in the defending champions' back yard with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford. The 2001/02 Premier League season saw plenty of change, and that all started with a host of big-name arrivals as a number of clubs looked to challenge for United's crown.
The summer of 2001 ushered in the start of Frank Lampard's long association with Chelsea as the midfielder arrived from West Ham United, Premier League debutants Fulham made the surprise signing of Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from Juventus, and compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy arrived at Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Teddy Sheringham, the 2000/01 Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers' Association Player of the Year, returned to Tottenham Hotspur, although Spurs lost centre-back Sol Campbell to arch rivals Arsenal.
Dean Richards filled Campbell's boots after joining from Southampton, who moved into their new home St Mary's Stadium after leaving The Dell. The centre-back's debut came against Manchester United, and he scored the opening goal as Spurs raced into a 3-0 lead at half-time. Sir Alex Ferguson's side came out firing in the second half, however, and emphatic finishes from Juan Sebastian Veron and David Beckham crowned a remarkable comeback for the visitors as the match finished 5-3 to United.
The previous season's UEFA Champions League semi-finalists Leeds United, with former Inter Milan striker Robbie Keane in their ranks, were the early pace-setters and topped the pile at the start of November after an 11-match unbeaten run. Liverpool and Aston Villa were their nearest rivals at this stage, and Villa's Peter Schmeichel became the first goalkeeper to score in the Premier League after striking late in a 2-1 defeat to Everton.
Liverpool then led the way soon after and two of the sides they beat in that fine early season run, Arsenal and Manchester United, met at Highbury in November. It was the hosts who came out on top as two late errors from United goalkeeper Fabian Barthez allowed Thierry Henry to score twice as the Gunners won 3-1.
Arsenal were soon on the receiving end of a home defeat to Sir Bobby Robson's Newcastle United, and the Magpies topped the table at Christmas. Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, who would go on to become the first player to score 200 Premier League goals when he struck against Charlton Athletic, found the net 23 times during the campaign, but Arsenal followed that reverse with an irresistible run of form.
Newcastle, Man Utd, Leeds and Liverpool all challenged Arsenal in the winter months, but the Gunners would not lose again in the Premier League campaign. They finished off the season with a 13-match winning streak that started with a 1-0 triumph at Everton. David Moyes replaced Walter Smith as manager when the Toffees were level on points with the relegation zone, but four wins from nine ensured they comfortably preserved their top-flight status.
Arsenal's form was epitomised by Dennis Bergkamp's clever touch around Newcastle defender Nikos Dabizas and cool finish in a 1-0 win at St James' Park, which was voted as goal of the season. FWA Player of the Year Robert Pires also produced a moment of inspiration in the same month, as he nonchalantly lobbed Schmeichel in the Gunners' 2-1 win at Villa Park.
To have any hopes of retaining their crown, Manchester United had to beat Arsenal at Old Trafford in the penultimate match of the season, but Sylvain Wiltord's winner sealed a second Premier League title for Arsene Wenger's side. They finished seven points clear of second-placed Liverpool, who sneaked ahead of United on the final day.
Long-serving Arsenal defenders Tony Adams and Lee Dixon retired after playing their part in the club's title triumph, and they lifted silverware once more when brilliant strikes from Ray Parlour and Player of the Season Freddie Ljungberg gave the Gunners a 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
Arsene Wenger unsurprisingly claimed the Manager of the Season award but previous winner George Burley endured a drastic change in fortunes as his Ipswich Town side, who had finished fifth in a remarkable 2000/01 campaign as a newly promoted club, were relegated. - กีฬา
Imagine telling those Leiceister fans that they'd win the EPL in the future
I know, they would never believe how shite the all round standard is now compared to then at that time. These weren't the greatest times of course, but there's was still majority playing with more passion for their respective teams. And before it got ridiculous with Billionaire foreigners taking over the English game.
And Bournemouth were in the League 2 equivalent at this time too. Boy do things change!
Crazy
And the dominant looking champions won the league only once in the next 18 years.
@@marshaltito641 Actually would have been the league 1 equivalent they we're in division 2. As you know they had Premier League then Division 1,2 and 3
Love watching all these season reviews. Especially the 90's and the early 00's.
Best days best football ⚽
Good times,my Arsenal ❤🏆
the most dominant Arsenal ever!
@@vincenzosilviocrimaldi7352I simply agree, Bro, the 2004 Arsenal is a phenomenal galactic.
@@MarcelloAFC1992I am Italian but I am crazy for English football. I was a child when Arsenal dominated it was an unforgettable team. I hope that an equally strong Arsenal will return one day.
@@vincenzosilviocrimaldi7352 We are the same Bro, Arsenal today may not be even a shadow of what it once was, but I will never stop being a Gooner, my love for Arsenal has never diminished, on the contrary, it only increases with each passing year.
@@MarcelloAFC1992 It's a true love! 😉
Yes good times my lovely Arsenal
Haha I like how they said it was gonna be Ferguson’s last season at United 🤣🤣🤣 lasted another 11 years.
He nearly quite few occasions since his reign in Manchester United
Remember when Wenger said a team could go unbeaten and they laughed? He got the last laugh.
However they haven't won it again in 20 years since!
Yeah, and look at all the different teams who have won it since. Chelski Rubles or Oil Money.@@Timekeeper1200
Arsenal ♥️
Really superb and fantastic season for Arsenal
they r shit now
@@maxclem3nts That's football. Highs and lows

I’m Liverpool fan but arsenal are third best club in the country their problem the board the owner
during the premier League years this was for me the best arsenal season.
@ÇÎROK 98/99 and 02/03 we should have won the league for sure.
2004 unbeaten in 38 games
Arsenal 01 02 Fa cup and league double and scored in every single league game that season i know they didnt go the whole season unbeaten the did away but not at home. But this season is very close to arsenals best ever
Hi I’m not an Arsenal fan, can someone tell me why you have a cannon on your logo?
I rate the 2001/2002 Arsenal team above the 2003/2004 one. Their pass and move football with pace was a joy to watch.
I believe that Arsenal in 2001/2002 are the only team to score in every league game in the Premier League era?
Yes
WTF was so special about that? I didn't notice anything special. But then again I am obviously not that autistic about football anyways.
We are long way from both those teams people don't understand
Championship Manager 01/02 players UNITE!
03-04 is better
Hi mate, i was searching throughout youtube for liverpool 2001/02 season highlight to no avail last night, and guest what you upload this season review straight away😂😂😂 eventhough it is not liverpool hl but tq very much mate

@@j2foot922 Can ya please put the review of the Agüero moment when he scored the winner against Rangers
@@j2foot922 I think it was 2011 Arsenal fan by the way
Hurts to see what Arsenal is now
Revival Arsenal here we come 😉
How van der Sar was in that Fulham team shocks me.
How barthez ever got a game still confuses me!
And he stayed there for a while.
ANACOTT STEEL He was good keeper very good but mad nuts and maybe stupid errors.
He was best keeper in 1998 World Cup and pukas award tells you that
Moment of silience for the fan who yelled UR SHIT at Sir Alex Ferguson at 4:26 may forever he find peace.
🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Thanks for uploading these
Hi, thank you for these amazing season reviews.. Can you please upload 2007/2008 season review as well? That would be wonderful..
I will do my best to do so hey.
2019/2020 will be much appreciated..... Obviously after the pandemic of course
What is the song name from the 1st minute of this video? Thanks for the help.
Some strange shenanigans happened this season....Bowyer kicking fuuk outta someone, Defoe scoring a header despite being as tall as a grasshopper and United being out of the running before Christmas
And a fan screaming abuse at Ferguson... baffling ain't it
@drewgarvie08091976
Well ManUtd weren't out of the title race by Christmas were they. They'd just lost more games than other PL champions had lost by that point but there's a first time for everything. ManUtd went back to 1st by a month after being 9th and stayed there for quite a while before slipping to 2nd then 3rd right at the end after they lost title & Liverpool were really going for 2nd they cared about that more than ManUtd. ManUtd probably would've got at least a draw vs Arsenal had ManUtd not needed to win the game to stay in the race.
But ManUtd's strong champions league campaign was a factor just like it was in 1997/98 the other time Arsenal had won the PL.
Beckham broken metatarsal because of dirty Deportivo players ruling him out of the rest of the season was also a factor. He missed the Arsenal game and for some reason v.Nistelrooy didn't start it either.
Great vintage footage but some action cut out missing several goals.
cheers
Apparently nicholas anelka has played for 12 different clubs
😂
he played for Arsenal, liverpool, man city, bolton, chelsea, west brom lol
What's the song's name from 1:00?
I dare say this but in my opinion arsenals 01 02 season was better than there 03 04 invincable season. Thats because they completed the double winning the fa cup and league and scored in every league game that season witch the invincables didnt do. And never lost away from home but the invincables did it as well. But im defo talking utter nonsense.
Many people actually think the 02 team was better than 04
Im subscribing
Alan shearer in the phanton of great forwards
4:24 Ferguson scary man hat hahaaaaa
John Gregory was a big loss for Villa. I remember opposition fans were absolutely shocked when that happened, especially given how good they were at the time. In my opinion, it's only recently that they've ever seen the kind of form they'd shown under Gregory during those years. Derby were relegated, but I always felt like he was let down by Ellis at Villa, and that was where he wanted to be.
Arteta Arsenal very soon by GOD'S grace. #COYG
Newcastle back then we're such a good team with arguably one of the best strikers to ever grace the pitch a shame they never won more trophies. Good for us at United but from a neutral side of things they were good to watch 👌
Mad how Ipswich went from fifth place and UEFA Cup football the previous season, to relegation in this one. It just went to show how teams like them find it so hard to build on a 'freak season'. Leicester win the title in 2015/16 and now are on the verge of relegation again. I couldn't believe this Ipswich side got European football.
Derby still not returned.
they did in 2007-08 after beating West Brom in the playoff final but despite this they were relegated with a record low points total
Make them available!
I will never understand a word Alex Ferguson says
Newcastle were back near the top again
Ok why are some parts of the 2002/03 season skipped
@Aleska Boljevic, some parts were skipped since if all kept. TH-cam was going to block the video.
Hello J2foot. Sorry im asking for this but don´t you have the 2004-2005 season from the Premier League...
Will definitely look into it and upload it in the next few days...🫡
We had to win this title otherwise it would have been a monopoly 4 titles in a row for utd

£47m in the year 2001, constantly trying to poach other clubs best players and usually succeeding, makes me laugh so much when people say united did it without money, united would not have won no way near as much if they didn't flash the cash as much as they did.
When Arsenal & Leeds were giants
Is Claudio Reyna the father of Giovanni Reyna?
Yes, he is

Selling jaap stam was the biggest mistake he is technically much better than Ferdinand and vidic
Red cads in Arsenal games tells you something here.
united where awful this season lol
Weren’t that bad considering what their been serving up since Ferguson retired
@gazelliott2414
Scored by far the most and got to ChampionsLeague semi-finals lost only on away goals, Arsenal did how well in Europe??
Plus Beckham was hacked loads in QF's vs Deportivo they broke his metatarsal he missed rest of the season, would've at least got 2nd. Probably would've won it if it hadn't been for a few Barthez mistakes.
When football really mattered no VAR or weak players just top quality times
go to 45 minutes and 45 secinds. ljunberg crosses to himself. some run that lol.
Haiya who ask fergie sell stam and he shouldn’t get Barthez

What would have been different
I actually don’t know mid table premier league.
I think not top seven
Probably what Leicester is now
@@downnice95 maybe not but probably around 14th imo
Chelsea too

I do not get the hype about the Arsenal side of this season at all and many people forget how lucky they were at times and I do not recall any memorable demolitions of other sides.
I recall a period around November and December when their luck turned and they narrowly won a string of home games after going a goal down. To this day I wonder how different things would have been had they not done so. Hardly the most memorable and spectacular of results in all honesty. That's at least 12 points they were lucky to pick up and imagine how different the table would have been and if they dropped say another 12 points from other games. There was that disgustingly lucky jammy Wiltord winner away to Everton that was another example.
On another note to those that keep crowing over the Man Utd treble of 1999 that had a number of lucky "what if" sliding doors moments in all three competitions where they could have ended up winning nothing but instead got lucky. Again also an overrated achievement and not that convincing deep down.
I bet I am going to upset and offend a load of illiterate football aspies by saying this. As if I care.
