  • ‘Marvel’ Mahonia Update - Fragrant Flowers - Shade Loving - In this video I update my ‘Marvel’ Mahonias that I planted last year. They are shade loving evergreen winter flowering shrubs that are great for pollinators.

    How can you bear to leave all of the gorgeous things you've planted? Sure hope the next owners are gardeners, too! 🙂

      It is tough, but I have selling, trading, and giving away plants all my life. Probably a little different for me than it would be for others.

    How about Mahonia Arthur Menzies?

    Love my soft caress. I would plant Marvel's if I had a good location that works with their height.

    Never heard of this plant before watching your channel. Now I'm seriously thinking of ordering one for the shady side yard, where I have a limited variety of plants. What I do have doesn't bloom as big or as bright as this "Marvel Mahonia". Plus, this is an evergreen = BONUS points!

      That is why I did those checkmarks on the thumbnail. It really does check off a lot of boxes.

      No, just the yellow. I really like that bloom when nothing else does.

    It genuinely pains me that none of the wholesalers or retailers in my area bring in any of these wonderful varieties. I guess I need to start my own garden center.

    I have 3 Mahonia that were planted years ago in the shade near the house. It’s the older version ( no name avail) so it has the prickly leaves and drops the berries. They sprout all around the flower beds and the birds carry them off also so they have sprouted in the woods. The older version has become a pest in my yard. The new ones are prettier. Are they invasive?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have Mahonia bealei and they are invasive. Newer varieties of most plants are less invasive.

      Reminds me of my Rose of Sharon and the hummingbird bush, it's a job just to keep them under Control, H,Bush just sprout all over, and the Rose of Sharon almost does the same thing

      Jane Woodhouse I have the same issue, Jane. I try to pull them when they’re young but they can pop up just about anywhere! The birds sure do love them so I can’t bring myself to pull them out.

    Hi Jim, I planted a Marvel in the shade about a year ago and the foliage has shifted from the darker green color to almost a lime green. I’m in zone 7b. Could it be a deficiency in the soil that is causing the color change?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the pH is high it could definitely be an iron deficiency.

    • @ravenabraham8754
      @ravenabraham8754 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the reply! Most of my growing space has pretty acidic clay soil but that particular area may have some different chemistry. I have five soft caresses a few feet away with normal dark green foliage so it was strange for the marvel to be so bright green. Seems very healthy aside from that. I’ll do a soil test to try and figure out what’s going on.

      @@ravenabraham8754 Is it possibly wetter? That could also do the same thing?

    • @ravenabraham8754
      @ravenabraham8754 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      HortTube with Jim Putnam Yes that area stays pretty damp. That would cause the color change?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ravenabraham8754 Wet conditions can make it difficult for plants to have access to nutrients.
