I just love watching you in your garden, you always explain absolutely everything I need to know,I thank you and follow you every time. Thank you so so much.....
The soft caress is a complete must. I have three in a hedge pattern. Then a fourth doing a solo act. And I was super tempted to buy a 5th the other day cause on sale at Lowe’s. And just couldn’t figure out space for it 😂. But I so wanted to buy it
Thank You! “Marvel” is exactly what I”even been looking for. Sounds like the ideals shade evergreen. Love the yellow and that is deer resistant. Win win all around.
I am always amazed at the size of your 3 gallon shrubs. Looking forward to the coming weeks when your center opens, looking for to the hour drive to get there.
I had a mahonia at my old house in a mostly shady, fairly moist little nook at the side of the house. Basically no care except for pruning when it got too big. The leaves were soft when new but got very jaggy when they matured. This Marvel looks like a real winner for the new place.
Hi Jim. I live in zone 7b planted several soft caress in my yard last summer. After the winter all the leaves turned brown. I thought they had all died. Kept only two because it still had some green leaves. Re-transplanted the remaining two in a more protected shady area & after trimming the dead foliage they bounced back. Now I’m wondering if the others I pulled weren’t dead at all but just got burnt from the cold winter. What are your thoughts?
Put in 2 Soft Caress last fall under tall pine trees. I'm in zone 8a. They did not make it through out very cold winter. Both are brown and appear to be dead. Not going to take them out yet. So hoping they put out from the roots. Love all your videos!! Really appreciate your time and great explanations!
Unfortunately some fall planted things took it poorly this year. Fall is the best time to plant in the south , but we really were set up because it stayed warm until Christmas and turned wicked cold. They are likely still alive near the base, and I would definitely give them some time this spring to show signs of life
Hi Jim. I live in zone 7 on Long Island, NY You sold me on the caress mahonias. I have lots of shade and want to try them. I need to know what time of the year I should be planting them. Can you help me? Thanks
@@JimPutnam How early in the spring? Should I wait for a certain temp? Also, I plan to plant lenten roses. In order to get them before they run out you need to buy them now, but the temp still gets down to freezing at night. Should I get them and keep them inside until it warms up? Thanks
great video as always! pruning question here: i’m thinking about legging-up one of my marvel mahonias...seems like it would look cool. do you think it would tolerate that?
Thank you for the reply. If you dont mind I have 2 questions...1.Do you recommend Japanese Yew Podocarpus as well? My front foundation landscape (I just removed about 2 tons of clay out) shades unitl around 430ish pm. 2. What soil mixture do you recommend to fill where I removed all the clay?
Found this video in the "Zone 8 Plants" playlist.. what a freaking excellent idea to create playlists for specific zones!! Well done, sir.

Love the almost tropical look of the Soft Caress Mahonia, I will definitely integrate this into the shady portion of our yard, thanks Jim!

Definitely a winner Jim love the flowers with last year's berries combo - who needs a florist? :)

Can I take cutting off hydrangeas while they are dormant?
Most mahonias have very sharp pointing leaves
Are the marvel Mahonia and soft caress varieties rhizomatous with their roots?
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and commenting
Do you know any tricks to keep mulch in place on a slight slope? Rain is washing it all over.

In the spring for sure. Get a good season of growth before the first winter

@@deenastevens6417 If they have new growth hold off until mid March. If they don't have new growth put them in the ground.
Oh it's called mahonia. I've wondered what it was. I thought it was some kind of holly. Some of them look like hollies a bit.
They are great plants. Thanks for watching.

If you are talking about tree forming one, then yes. I have had the same thought.
HortTube with Jim Putnam cool i’ll give it a try
How do I get a HortTube shirt???
A friend gave me that for Christmas. I have some ideas for some things I am going to offer later this year. Thanks for noticing that.
Would these do well in Savannah Ga? Around the Tea Olive ?
Oh. Very much so. Good choice actually.
