I like the British terminology "screw back, cannon,' etc. However, I have not figured out why a bank shot is called a 'double'. It is being hit off of one rail/cushion.

if you count the cueball going in the pocket as hitting the pocket then technically it hits 2 things, cushion+pocket, which is my best guess for where the 'double' part comes from.

I think it comes from the term "doubling back " which means to turn around. The cueball travells back past the direction from which it was struck.
