Maybe this is the great confluence Void is talking about. Both ancients are dying together and so they are slowly becoming one. since the definition is two rivers combining together that's why the tormentor looks like a well/prison from dark reef and why some dire structures have radiant vines because they are slowly converging.

Hard to believe, if every game played is canon, that the one game where my Anti-mage ran mid lane to feed 27 times and called my entire team slurs is entirely canon.
what I honestly think based sir slacks lore are these: - there was no alternate universe - the labyrinth underground basically have prisons. when the great change happened, parts of the labyrinth showed up. including, tormentor. - the underground tunnels, may as well be the labyrinth, based on one dialogue of wind ranger. - from the name tormentor, it torments, prisoners. - those tormentors are basically powered by shards created by aghanims. once tormentor is broken, well, shard has no use and will then be picked up by heroes. - for the portals, I think it is used to teleport. of course, silly me. however, again, it is part of labyrinth underground. in order to Travers the labyrinth easily from one end to another, the portals are a way to transportation. example, Roshan. - the watchers or the "artificial wards" as mentioned by sir slacks, may as well be a watcher underground to watch over the tormentors and alert who ever is guarding that said tormentor if in case there are any anomalies. - ooor. . . another twist for that ward is that, there is a big prison, and there's a tormentor inside that big room. and someone sick will watch over those prisoners getting, tormented. watch those screams and suffering.again, sick. - since they are no longer under ground, their power source is cut off and needs to be replenished by heroes every now and then. - reason for all the artificial wards wake up after Roshan is killed is because Roshan is a prisoner himself. - or perhaps a reward for those who slain the sinned to help as a guide. cannon - for the defenders gate, or force field, or whatever you call it, may seem as fail safe, and who ever is the guard for tormentors can move past it freely except for outsiders or escapees for tormentors.. - oooorrr. . . . that defender gate may as well ba a wall. encapsulating the tormentor that torments prisoners. keeping them from running out. and only the guards are a allowed to move in and out freely. - so, why is only part of the wall showed up and not the whole wall? well, the landscape changed, and basically, only part of the wall showed up.. - for the wisdom runes, it seems that it may be a product of the tormentor. perhaps may be extracting the "wisdom" of who ever is trapped inside the tormentor and then being condensed into a rune for easier consumption of, maybe aghanims?for him to be smarter? cannon. - for the special places like mines, statue, giant skeleton, maybe a part of ancient races or history. it may have been a part of a long lost history. - for those structures to give buffs is somehow similar to the towers giving armor. but that technology is lost and only armor buff is kept. -

I think you could also mention the Arc Warden changes in the New Frontier. That lines about him soon adapting to the new paradigm right inside the changelog might be hints of the continuation of the Ancients lore in future patches. They changed the conditions of the battle, but soon he will adapt and probably find a way to get them back in prison once and for all. Or it might be just a hint at the new Nemestice.
Actually, I think that the portals are an entrance to other dimensions, when entering the portal, one version of the characters enters and another version of the characters exits. The Outposts are like a series of signs that identify which dimension each of the heroes that appear corresponds to.
