      Old techies was just a game delayer. Both teams could just sit in jungle and farm, and then eventually the non-techies team wins because instead of a techies they have a hero who is actually useful in a team fight. The only way old techies actually did anything useful is if the other team is dumb and just wanders around to die randomly to green bombs, for no reason. New techies is way more of a useful hero. There is actually good teamfight utility.

    • @sabnock31
      @sabnock31 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      @@anthonymercuri8885 you're wrong on so many reasons.
      First of all, old Techies was "bad" because he is just as complex hero as Invoker, Meepo, Chen, Arc Warden or Tinker. Techies just didn't seem like he is complex, so dumb people pick him, thinking "Ooh, place mines, kill enemy, win game" and they lose. The good Techies player knows when and where to place mines, when to be more active with the team, what areas to block off for enemies.
      Second, I'm gonna tell you one little thing. The old Techies had the same exact playstyle he has now. Blast Off!, Proxy, Remote and Blast Off!, Proxy, Sticky. See the resemblance? You know why almost noone played like this? It was sub-optimal. It is sub-optimal now. You have much better nukers than Techies. They just butchered his defensive and map control role.

    The rework made Techies into quite a cool and useful regular hero and a much less annoying opponent. But, like, I expect Techies to be the weird meme hero that plays his own game and ends up reducing the other team to a bunch of nerves afraid of leaving their base. Annoying as it was, Techies used to be really unique. Also I was really surprised to learn that Techies and Pudge could no longer deny themselves when I cam back to Dota after a loooong break, and I think it robbed both heroes of some of their uniqueness (though not so much as the Techies rework).

      I feel like right now Techies is in a shitty spot. (58% winrate, 700 techies games). With the removal of the silence and additional blast off range, it has become a lot more difficult to play the nuke/assassin style. In the latest patch i have had a losing streak of 12 using that strat which was amazing the patch before.
      Valve forced me to adapt again, and now i‘m as annoying as old techies but with shittier spells. I rush octarine and aghs, when we are losing i deny the enemy access to our jungle, when we are winning i deny them access to their jungle. Before taking an objective i make a safe space for our team near it where they can retreat to during a fight etc etc. i‘m back to the annoying area control and placing mines style, and see there, my winrate since then is around the 60% mark again

      @@Tintelinusthe real problem is that techies basically ruined the game, and was simultaneously both terrible and too strong depending on the player
      Fundamentally a hero should not be able to hold a whole team from winning the game with unbeatable high ground Def, and he also shouldn't basically become entirely useless if the enemy team knows how to counter him or the player doesn't know exactly how to play him
      That's why he was reworked entirely, he wasn't a functional hero

A game within a game was his purpose. That all died and so did the game for me. Funnily enough, Valve had the same issue with Demoman in TF2. I used to play TF2 'professionally' (scene was small), and for the longest time Demoman's sticky bombs completely shaped the game. Demoman could completely hold a choke alone, and he was a great damage dealer in fights, because Demo is so OP he was limited to 1 player while all the other classes could have 2 (besides medic). It was the exact issues that Techies had when they were good. Over the years Valve nerfed the sticky bombs, but they still remained OP. The reason why Demoman wasnt nerfed into the ground like Techies was, is because Demo and his playstyle were there from the start and he was one of 9 playable characters, Valve could not nerf him into irrelevance like they did Techies, who was one of 124 heros. Had Techies been added at the start of Dota 2, and with other heros with the same defensive but offensive abilities, I dont think Valve or players wouldve hated him. But since Techies was added so late, and fundamentally changes the game like no other hero, 'everyone' hates Techies.

    • @chikin6146
      @chikin6146 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I don't think that was the case tho. Techies has always been in Dota 1. The problem often with Techies, especially Old Techies is that nobody plays against him too often for people to get used to him, and nobody plays him aside from genuine psychopaths that wants to make other players have a bad time. If someone does play him, they don't play him to his full potential, hence why Techies is a high skill floor and high skill ceiling hero.
      Look at it this way, if you're against a Techies and don't know the ins and outs of the hero, you won't know the ideal mine spots, how to properly kill him, or how to deal when he's mined an area with players ending up being paranoid or overthinking where they walk because they died to mines for the 5th time. If you're playing with him, players laning with a techies doesn't understand that he can be a lane bully, especially when Blast off was introduced. They'll either pick a weak laner like Spectre or play passively where they can't or won't harrass the enemy. Old Techies can't harass as much since he has long range but low damage, but blast off can kill since at lvl1, it deals 300 damage back then plus a silence. There's also bad Techies players that just afk jungles and doesn't contributes to fights which ends up becoming a 4v5 in most cases which loses the game. Another thing that makes players hates him is that he can 1shot a full slotted carry with 5k HP in 1 second from the other side of the map with enough bombs and a lot of people think that's bullshit.

    I haven't played DOTA2 for years but I clicked because I loved holding games hostage with the old techies. I had a great win rate with him ~65% around the 3500-3800 ELO bracket (not sure if this has changed), with several hundred games played with him. Watching Juggernauts not realize suicide could go through the spin early, early rage quits, existential dread from the opposing team for 60 to 90 minute games (or more) and taunting the enemy team with scores of gems back by your well (think I had 5 in one game) just felt good. It just felt evil and so good. Having an entire team run into a stun trap, or running into a late game techies with billions of CC items is hilarious. Sometimes you would cause losses simply by choosing the hero, but the inverse was sometimes true too.
    The old version of the hero really destroyed conventional thinking of how standard games go, and you could easily abuse people at higher ELO brackets. What was typical in standard games wasn't typical in games with techies. You could abuse rotations, conventional timings with creep respawns and ganks/counter ganks with the hero. Lots of malding by players who are use to doing standard things in an attempt to climb MMR when they get sent back to the well early.
    I hate what they did to my boy when I looked at changes to him a couple years ago when they made him a more universal hero. It's probably good for the game but it doesn't mean I like it. This hero will always be my favorite and will always be the 'face' of DoTA to me. I loved the death threats, the malding and the rage quits when I played this hero. It was fucking gold.

    Even back in WC3 days, there was a guide on split pushing techies using ult. First iteration of stun wards was not team-friendly but stunned a whopping 12 seconds. The build used them to cover escape by stun warding jungle paths to that lane, which were more limited back in the day. Rarely needed to even use self-destruct with boots of travel, 12s is a freaking eternity in MOBAs.
    I don't know how good that was in "competitive" play in WC3 DOTA days, but I tried it myself and it was indeed obnoxious and put a lot of pressure on the other teams, especially before creep wave hp got to the point where 1 remote mine can't one shot.

    Really nice video. Loved the action slacks rant you can tell he had so much to say haha I always find it sad when developers decide to remove a unique set of gameplay; I guess they were trying their best to make techies 'work' but instead he just disappeared.
    One suggestion I wolud make, honestly that complexity vs IG game was really hype and I think you could have adjusted the mood (music or voice) to represent how exciting it was that techies found a legit strat at the international.

    Good I love these videos. Always come back to rewatch them occasionally, despite having never played dota (or any moba for that matter) and never intending to, you just keep them so entertaining and interesting the whole time. Really makes me wanna root for and invest in a hero that I’ve usually only heard of for the first time a few minutes earlier. Love how much you turn each video into a story!

    Some of by best moments playing Dota 2 with a friend (and doing horribly), was the joy of getting to experience said friend playing Techies where they wold chase down the enemy heroes going for that suicide kill.
