I agree that's small, and better food, u always see 3 kinds, grass, those big leaves and the limbs with leaves, not often do u see anything else! Other places u see tomatos, green.beans, cucumbers, okra, lettuce and so on!
And more enrichment, it doesn’t seam like the zoo is doing much to make their life’s less mundane. Their outside and inside place is sooo boring I feel sorry for them.
First thing when doors open Kintaro runs quickly to get his oranges...he knows exactly where they are..Genki only drools like that when she is throwing down fruit...she greedily puts the fruit in her mouth due to excitement because she loves it immensely. Poor sweet human gorilla Gentaro he rolled into a ball when Momo got after him...Genki not caring about Momo possibly attacking her steps in protecting Gentaro that tells us all that she is a very good mother..whenever she yells she sounds like an elephant..I love her the most from all the other mama gorillas posted on social media!!! The funny part to me, is when he started chasing his dad. Lol...what was he going to do, beat his dad up? And NO, I don’t like to see them fighting, even though he knows better than to get in dad’s GREEDY way when he’s eating. Cudos to mom for trying to help her baby boy!!!

I have seen silverbacks chase and bite son just for looking at him in the eyes. It’s all about respect the alpha gorilla. He eats first, he gets the respect. It’s good lesson for his son but it’s scary for us to watch and mom. She poo herself cause she is upset. She is a good mom. It’s weird cause after the silverbacks attack they let the family chase him. I’ve seen this in other gorilla families and don’t know why.....

Momotaro can be so selfish when there is food around, having been raised without a silverback to guide him on how to behave and treat his children. Hard to watch Gentaro being hurt but it’s not the first time and he’s a tough little boy, worrying that Momotaro could really hurt baby Kintaro if there is food about. Poor Genki has a hard time trying to raise her two boys. 🦍🇬🇧

I'm guessing it looked worse than it really was. But, as someone wrote, at some point, Gentaro will probably seriously challenge Momotaro. If they need to be separated, I wouldn't look at it as a tragedy. It's a son becoming an adult in his own right and moving out to start his own family, which is the way life generally is supposed to go.
Gentaro will probably be moved to another zoo in a year or 2 as he reaches sexual maturity to prevent inbreeding with his mother and maintain genetic diversity. Their are no other females in this group and they're all related except Momotaro who was specifically brought to this zoo to become Genki's mate.

Shabani and his brothers were raised by a wonderful father, Kibabu, he was firm but fair and taught his sons well. The brothers are kind and playful with their children.
Shabani is Shabani. Like humans, each gorilla has its own unique character. For example, silverback Oumbi is much tougher and agressive than Momotaro. Momotaro is good silverback, just a stricter than Shabani. Shabani was the youngest son, and could not always answer the older brothers as equal, which is why he is perhaps softer. However, Momotaro’s behavior is usually for the gorilla world. In addition, he is incredibly gentle with his wife, for example. And when he plays with his son he is neat. I think he is in a bad mood when he is hungry. Just like some people.
When you have a child that needs to be put in check, this is what daddy did. And it was needed. Pour mama couldn't do anything. And I'm sure it was a good lesson for kintaro. Daddy rules this home!!

It’s a respect/ dominance thing. He whacked Genki the other day for touching his food. He wouldn’t attack her as he does his son because he needs to mate with her.
As bad as Gentaro is at times, I still did not want him being hurt by his Dad; over food that is. Momotaro should have that same energy when Gentaro is looting Kintaro. Prioritze and focus Dad!

At the Kyoto Zoo they had a different Silverback before Momotaro but Genki was Not interested in him at all. Then Momotaro came along and it was Love at first sight. Genki is a great mother with 2 beautiful young male Gorillas. I wish Momotaro would play more with his children. He is always so stern looking But Momotaro is very handsome.

These are wild animals that react to what their instincts tell them to do. Momotaro is the Silverback and as such the boss and Gentaro's behaviour at times must be challenging and as such warrants a confrontation to keep him in place. He does not seem to damaged by it all and by what I can see it seems more about squealing and display rather than inflicting lasting damage. Seen this often in videos of other groups, the group chasing off a cranky Silverback.

I believe the zoo has tried to change feeding habits just a bit so people can see them eating. I think when ever veggies are brought out Momotaro will react aggressively. Too many people complain, they should let the zoo handle it. The people that work there know how to handle it. They know the gorillas. Feedingthem separately seems the best route for this family. The one thing I have been worried about is why Genki is salivating sooooo much. She’s been doing that recently. Why, looks like an allergic reaction, or ....???? That isn’t normal!!!

The one thing I have been worried about is why Genki is salivating sooooo much. She’s been doing that recently. Why, looks like an allergic reaction, or ....???? That isn’t normal!!!
