Do you all know how to properly take care of Gorilla's? I have watched Momotaro bully Genki and you all speak like it is a loving couple relationship. I notice that she is often tense and on watch and when Momotaro is near she finds a way of moving away within seconds even when it is not feeding time. You know she was bullied at the other zoo by the females, so this is not a good paring because Momatoro tries to bully her for food and will take food out of her hand. On one video he even injured her slightly. You need to feed him separately and again I ask if he is getting enough food? He acts like he is starving when the food is put out he runs to it often. I don't see other Gorillas behaving like that even when they are in a larger grouping. He won't even share with Gentaro when he was given a ice block. Both times he attacked Genki she pooped herself. Even if she stands her ground she cannot win in a physical fight. I think this is a bad paring. Their enclosure needs more live vegetation and grass. Lowland Gorilla's environment is very lush and dense vegetation. Genki keeps picking at her right arm and I have seen both her children doing the same, perhaps she has a skin issue like eczema. In comparison to other Gorillas in zoos, the Momotaro family's skin looks bad.
Watching this family most days, I have felt exactly the same things that you have commented on here. Genki always know to keep out of his way & keep Kintaro away if she feels Momotaro is 'on the warpath'.The enclosure (compared to other zoos) is quite pitiful with lack of grass/lushness & size for this family of 4. Because of the dirt floor (instead of grass) the fur has worn off their fingers compared to Gorillas the wild & in other zoos. Genki is such a patient, loving mother with Kintaro (moreso than Gentaro), sad to hear that she was bullied in a past zoo as well. Momotaro is often short tempered (& probably bored) - not what Genki needs at all as she seems to be of a nervous nature - which is understandable. This zoo often says 'her beloved husband' but that's not how it is at all. Sadly she's stuck with him!
@@rhonda5056 Japan has some really rich dense vegetation and forests. The homes are quite nice, why has this carefulness not extended to the Gorilla enclosure?
Genki is not an aggressive gorilla like some people have commented. She is very afraid of Momo but I'm glad that she didn't back down this time. Momo attacks any of them for food. I wish they would separate them when they get fed. She has taking too much abuse from Momo and so has Gentaro. My heart breaks when ever I see Momo attack her.
She used to attack gentaro every day when he was little. She has been attacking kintaro recently, so she is no better than momo. Actually momo has never bit kintaro, but she has
Poor Genki !!! Her right hand trembling in fear saddens me...she's 34 years old...not too many gorillas live past 35. Kintaro holding on and walking while trying to see his mothers face is absolutely the cutest!
And they want her to have another baby when she couldn't take care of the two she has had. Im glad they fixed her teeth. If they want her to give birth at her age a health they need to start feeding her food to get her as healthy as possible
I've seen her shaking that hand while she and the boys are chasing Momotaro for hitting or biting someone. She has her moments. Mo was really going after Gent and she was screaming running at him holding Kent shaking g that hand at him. He stopped pounding on Gent and sauntered off. I wouldn't count her out. She knows she has those boys.
@@ritaamunrud4201 Yes, I remember that video...I thought she was absolutely amazing in it! Genkis body language and facial language was great. Genki isn't scared of Momo when it comes to her boys Genki gets terrified when Momo directs his anger towards her or when it catches her off guard.

Poor Genki, Momotaro shouldn't take her food. She stood up to him, even followed him. She needs love from her family not aggression from them. Even though she eats a lot doesn't mean that they take the food. I agree that more nutritional food needs to be provided for the whole family and Momotaro feed separately. I pray peace for this beautiful family.

The look of course if it is okay an insane animal hater did something with it. But this works well! I think Kyoto Zoo should give it a try. I agree. I've said on several occasions that Genki is always bullied by Gentaro too. It is due to the stingy zoo who has them cooped up in this barren landscape with hardly no stimulants and hammocks that are tearing that poor Kinny can hang himself on. Shabani was bored and picked on the girls particularly Nene until he was moved to his new enclosure. All of his aggressive yet playful nature virtually ceased. He and his family has a lushious and spacious place to roam and plenty to do that keeps them active and stimulated. Their daily diet has a variety of vegetables. This zoo ought to be ashamed of themselves for the poor way they have brought these majestic creatures to this environment and not provide for them that is beneficial to them being able to thrive.
I hate when Genki gets treated bad! She is so brave! She was so scared that she was shaking and it looks like she shit herself too! After all the trauma she has been thru her anxiety gets so bad sometimes.I hope she doesnt start hurting herself again.
Why doesn't the Kyoto Zoo feed the gorillas more food especially for Momotaro? He's bigger than everyone else. In the wild they can eat anytime. Why are they being treated like humans only eating 3X a day? Why can't Gentaro have a female companion? He's very close to an adult age. Momotaro was only 14 years of age when Gentaro was born. Isn't Gentaro 11 years of age now? I feel they need a bigger place like in some other zoos. Or have them share a space to make it bigger place for them to roam around in.
Sweet genki like wth..lil kintaro right by momma...the beginning was great everyone seemed mellow kintaro n momo interact more love this fam..couldve been worse momo was pretty gentle despite what hecouldve done..this is their world n momo loves his food..
I feel very sorry with her because her mother was killi by a silverback gorilla ! She is old and try to defend but she was very scare , she do pupu! Poor I love everybody but for me she is special like Gentaro!
I see them only eating grass. Shouldn't they have fruits and more vegetables i see other zoos and their enclosure is more roomy with grass and other play stuff. The other gorillas are playfull even with eachother these gorillas look so sad and miserable...how sad this situarion😭😭😭
I believe they feed them a lot of grass because their teeth aren't looking do great. The grass acts as a natural kind of floss. If they're fed too many fruits there can be too much sugar in their diet that can rot their teeth quicker. I would like to watch them eat more veggies though.
@@vescucci I agree gorillas love celery it’s what they eat in the wild they love carrots so many other gorillas are given celery carrots tomatoes and all kinds of greens I know Jackie loves mustard greens they should get some local farms supporting them.I know it would make me happy as well as everyone else who watches this channel. And some fruits fruits in the morning so the teeth get cleaned with the greens and all the chlorophyll I think would be perfectly fine though I’m not a gorilla expert. I do know that greens I do know the greens are good for peoples teeth
Kudos to Genki for fighting back. Still, I'm glad no one was hurt. Momotaro is large and could severely injure his family. The keepers know of his food aggression issues, and do their best, by usually feeding him separately.
@@seasonsofphilly1993 About 60 lbs per day give or take some. Why don't they try feeding him more for one week and see if his food aggression goes away.

Perhaps the lack of ground area is compensated for by the great height. The total useable volume of their enclosure is great. They get plenty of exercise, that's for sure! The vertical exercise they all get is great for their cardiovascular, pulmonary, & musculoskeletal systems.
I love GENKI AND I AM VERY SAD WITH THE SITUATION OF BAD TREATMENTS THAT SHE PASSES. GENKI IS A WONDERFUL MOTHER AND I FOLLOW THE CHANNEL JUST JUST FOR HER BEING THAT DEDICATED, LOVING, CAREFUL MOTHER THAT IS.
Better take extra care of genki she is old and is no match for momotaro. Feed them better quality of food. If u can't take better care of them u have no business having them there. Genki shouldn't have to put up with being physically assaulted by momotaro. Yes thier skin and hair doesn't look good.

I've seen Genki injured his hand before, now I understand that Momotaro hit her 🥺. The only disadvantage of Momotaro is that food is very important to him, and every time the trigger point is because of food problems 😞.

Their enclosure looks like someone bombed it with a bunch of debris. I don't see them eating vegetation like I see gorillas at other zoos eating. Momotaro needs more food. Don't know if it is imagination, but Momo's chest looks like he is loosing body mass.

He visto en otros zoo que le dan muchas frutas, mazorcas, yogurt a las familias de gorilas silver back que están en extinción. That's cute 🤣 I can say the same for Genki... It's too bad because the brothers, Shabani and Haoko are in love with their wives and when it comes to being a father, they're the best that I've ever seen. Haoko has a habit of kidnapping his babies because he wants quality time with them.

@@bigboytoyz541 The Haoko I've seen has been a good husband and father...he and Shabani were brought up with sisters and,they both were caring towards them. Last year when his daughter was born he held and stroked Momokos hand tenderly. When Momoko had her illness and was in hospice Haoko was depressed calling for her...that man loves his wife. Shabani loves his whole family as well. Shabani is by far the best father,brother,husband, and the best looking of the bunch.

I have noticed for a couple months the tension within this little family over "Not enough food" What is going on there? Also Genki has a cyst on her face. You guys used to be one of the best Gorilla Zoo's around. Drama doesn't make better content. I don't see much vegtables given to them anymore either. I am very worried about y'all. 💖💖💖
The abcess on Genki's face is almost gone as of this writing. The vets & staff have been on top of it all along. They get fed morning & evening meals indoors & we do not get to see that.
Momotaro would not want to kill Genki over a small food issue. He wanted to teach her a lesson. Order & discipline are his responsibilities. He is responsible for the socialization of the group.

This is a sad situation to watch. So many of the comments I agree with and many I didn't. For us regular viewers of the Momo gorilla family we all feel some kind of way about this. The one thing that keeps me from being too upset is that I have to remember at the end of the day, they are wild animals. They do so many things that are so "human like" that I think we forget they are not human. They are behaving exactly like gorillas act. Gorillas naturally have a hierarchy and the Silverback is ALWAYS at the top of their food chain. He gets the best of everything which includes females, food, etc. They will often take whatever they want from whoever they want whenever they want. They don't have to ask or be nice about it. The females in a troop know their place and don't usually stray from it and they respect it even if they don't like it. I think what we saw here was an incident that happened naturally and not intentionally. As humans we can't and shouldn't just separate them or punish them for doing what they do. Just because they live captive in a Zoo doesn't mean they are domesticated; they are not. I truly feel bad for Genki and I do want so smack Momo but I do know they were only doing what gorillas do and I think in their world they don't and didn't think too much about it and when it was over, it was over for them. Us humans are going to feel some kind of way for a while. We tend to judge and hold grudges against anyone and anything that offends our sensibilities. I didn't like what I saw Mo do but I have to accept it. He is after all a Great Primate; Silverback Gorilla.
Agree but if the zoos are in need of help maybe they should say so and let people help. Animals will do what is natural to their own kind. They are not human.
It's amazing how different their digestive systems must be from our own. They can build tremendous amounts of muscle while eating things we can't even digest.
It is more than just digestion. Actually they don't fully digest all that they eat. They sometimes eat their poop to get a second round of digestion & extract more nitrients. For humans there are about 20 essential amino acids which we cannot synthesize, so we need those in our diet. I guess gorillas can synthesize all the amino acids they need from their plant food.
@@bythebayou5351 Yeah they really need the plant fiber to feed the healthy bacteria in their guts. Male gorillas in North American zoos have super high rates of heart disease thanks to being fed "gorilla biscuits" in place of tens of pounds of leafy plant material per day. The biscuits are cheaper and easier since they're more nutrient dense but gorillas need to keep their gut bacteria well fed in order to have healthy hearts. Heart disease is practically unheard of in the wild where they forage for greens all day but it's the primary killer of silver backs in America. This zoo seems to be doing a really good job with their diets and making them "forage"

Fun fact: Gorillas are the only apes that can digest cellulose, the material leaves are made from. In other apes, it goes undigested from one end to the other.
What do you think they eat in the wild? Leaves, grass, bark, shoots & roots--all day, every day. Sometimes wild vegetables, berries, nuts, insects & grubs. But guess what! They get fed morning & evening meals indoors which we don't get to see. That includes vegetables. In the morning when they come outdoors, they will forage for pieces of apples & carrots, whole bell peppers, other veggies, & peanuts. They do not have the same metabolism as humans. They have different dietary needs. The zoo knows what it is doing.

Just wanted to add... Every one of you folks who think Momotaro simply attacked Genki for food, wasn't paying attention. She instigated his 'attack'. He wasn't just being food aggressive in this circumstance. If you go to 6:20 and re-watch (maybe a few times if need be, because there's glare and a tree partly obscuring the view, but), you'll easily see that she leaned into him, growled and barred her teeth at him. That's when and why he immediately jumped on her. He's the alpha. He's the dominant one. He's the Silverback!!! This is normal gorilla behavior. He simply put her in her place. He showed her who's the boss, took some of her food, not all of her food and didn't do any real physical damage to her that he easily could have done. Personally, I feel bad for Momotaro. He's in his prime of life. Probably bored much of the time, and sexually frustrated as well. Genki is hardly enough for him. Good mom, but old and anxiety ridden. Momotaro got the short end of the deal here. It's really too bad that he's not set up like Shabani with two different mates. (Yes, I've read the stories about Genki - no need to remind me.)
Poor genki has been abused all her life. I hurt everytime I see her hurt. She always messes herself. It breaks my heard because she is so afraid. Her eldest son is now trying to hurt her because she refuses his advances. In her last troop when the silverback she was in love with died she was thrown to the bottom of the hierarchy and it's not a safe place to be. She got so anxious she bit off several of her finger tips. 😭 I'm almost positive even though it's never mentioned (PERHAPS SHE SHOULD BE TESTED) I believe she has PTSD from the time she was in the last troop till now being mildly abused. She is always in alert mode and she has bit her youngest son while in a deep sleep causing him to scream in pain. Well momotoro wasn't having it and grabbed her and shaked her. Believe it or not..she didn't for a second out down the grass or stop eating. Which is another issue...I wonder if depression in apes (it's a thing look it up) because they are 98.9 % close to us so the binge eat?. I ask because I study all primaates and I understand she is pregnant but this is behavior prior and is 10x worse now she's with child. She never stops. It wouldn't be Farfetched for her to have PTSD. Hopefully with a new child and kintoro by her side she can rest easy a little more.
Silverbacks of the troop always eat first just like in the wild they take more than their fair share, even the handsome Shabani takes food from the other’s when he feels like it , you have to remember the stress of being the Silverback of the troop it’s hard graft as they have to keep everything under control and keep the family safe it’s all on his shoulders and Shabani has done more than his fair share of raising the kid’s and keeping Annie safe from Nene and AI as AI wasn’t interested in looking after Annie when they were introducing her into the family.
If they were well fed there wouldn't most likely be aggression. I think its abuse to keep them enclosed an not fed well. No reason why this zoo want supply plenty vegetables as other zoos do except they just dont. If zoo cant afford to properly care for animals then u give them to one that will

Ну, во-первых, она не женщина, а самка гориллы, во-вторых, сыночек уже пытался залезть на мамашку, об этом в других видео. Младший просто ещё не дорос до возраста половой зрелости, его интересует только титька. Кстати, я заметила, что эта самка не в большом почете у самца, тут одно из двух: либо она родила от другого самца, либо просто самец её "не любит", все, как у людей.

That wouldn't happen in the wild. A female would respect the silverback & know her place in the hierarchy even if she doesn't like it. If she really doesn't like it she would leave the troop.

Clearly they need more green foods around so as not to become overly territorial …where’s the grass and turf and natural trees it’s not a natural environment….it’s no wonder that the female was injured ….bad management on this zoo’s part. Bad animal husbandry
They used to be so happy before the pandemic hit. Maybe the Zoo is low on funds. Maybe they need more donations since this pandemic has gone on so long. Let's see what can be done to help😢🙏💖💯
Your heart is definitely in the right place but I rather donate to get them out of that terrible enclosure, otherwise all we’ll be doing is enabling this zoo to continue their neglect. These gorgeous creatures deserve nothing but the best . If the zoo can’t afford to provide for this troop, then im pretty sure another zoo, sanctuary(etc) will. For way too long this zoo and many more in Japan had the time and money to correct this issue and today in 2021 it seems like nothing has been done. I would expect this in China or North Korea, not Japan.
Genki looked like she was crying,, trembling in fear and pain, and even pooping. I think Momotaro matured physically quickly but he's not mentally mature. His job is to protect his family.

I guess genki wanted it, so she decided to lunge at momo with her teeth showing. So momo scolded her. It's not momo's fault. The silverback gets first choice of food, that is part of the hierarchy. Genki is too greedy when it comes to food and it gets her in trouble.

An Alpha male always eats first. All others respect that and wait until he is finished. Cats, dogs do the same, they get out of the way and never try to eat before or at the same time close to an alpha.

Do you all know how to properly take care of Gorilla's? I have watched Momotaro bully Genki and you all speak like it is a loving couple relationship. I notice that she is often tense and on watch and when Momotaro is near she finds a way of moving away within seconds even when it is not feeding time. You know she was bullied at the other zoo by the females, so this is not a good paring because Momatoro tries to bully her for food and will take food out of her hand. On one video he even injured her slightly. You need to feed him separately and again I ask if he is getting enough food? He acts like he is starving when the food is put out he runs to it often. I don't see other Gorillas behaving like that even when they are in a larger grouping. He won't even share with Gentaro when he was given a ice block. Both times he attacked Genki she pooped herself. Even if she stands her ground she cannot win in a physical fight. I think this is a bad paring. Their enclosure needs more live vegetation and grass. Lowland Gorilla's environment is very lush and dense vegetation. Genki keeps picking at her right arm and I have seen both her children doing the same, perhaps she has a skin issue like eczema. In comparison to other Gorillas in zoos, the Momotaro family's skin looks bad.

Watching this family most days, I have felt exactly the same things that you have commented on here. Genki always know to keep out of his way & keep Kintaro away if she feels Momotaro is 'on the warpath'.The enclosure (compared to other zoos) is quite pitiful with lack of grass/lushness & size for this family of 4. Because of the dirt floor (instead of grass) the fur has worn off their fingers compared to Gorillas the wild & in other zoos. Genki is such a patient, loving mother with Kintaro (moreso than Gentaro), sad to hear that she was bullied in a past zoo as well. Momotaro is often short tempered (& probably bored) - not what Genki needs at all as she seems to be of a nervous nature - which is understandable. This zoo often says 'her beloved husband' but that's not how it is at all. Sadly she's stuck with him!

Genki is not an aggressive gorilla like some people have commented. She is very afraid of Momo but I'm glad that she didn't back down this time. Momo attacks any of them for food. I wish they would separate them when they get fed. She has taking too much abuse from Momo and so has Gentaro. My heart breaks when ever I see Momo attack her.

I've seen her shaking that hand while she and the boys are chasing Momotaro for hitting or biting someone. She has her moments. Mo was really going after Gent and she was screaming running at him holding Kent shaking g that hand at him. He stopped pounding on Gent and sauntered off. I wouldn't count her out. She knows she has those boys.

Poor Genki, Momotaro shouldn't take her food. She stood up to him, even followed him. She needs love from her family not aggression from them. Even though she eats a lot doesn't mean that they take the food. I agree that more nutritional food needs to be provided for the whole family and Momotaro feed separately. I already wrote 'my' zoo has boxes. The people can give money to buy tasty food, and they accept food too. The look of course if it is okay an insane animal hater did something with it. But this works well!
I think Kyoto Zoo should give it a try. Imagine they receive salads, celery, fresh corn on the cob, apples... I would feel better ☺

I agree. I've said on several occasions that Genki is always bullied by Gentaro too. It is due to the stingy zoo who has them cooped up in this barren landscape with hardly no stimulants and hammocks that are tearing that poor Kinny can hang himself on. Shabani was bored and picked on the girls particularly Nene until he was moved to his new enclosure. All of his aggressive yet playful nature virtually ceased. He and his family has a lushious and spacious place to roam and plenty to do that keeps them active and stimulated. Their daily diet has a variety of vegetables. This zoo ought to be ashamed of themselves for the poor way they have brought these majestic creatures to this environment and not provide for them that is beneficial to them being able to thrive.

Why doesn't the Kyoto Zoo feed the gorillas more food especially for Momotaro? He's bigger than everyone else. In the wild they can eat anytime. Why are they being treated like humans only eating 3X a day?
Why can't Gentaro have a female companion? He's very close to an adult age. Momotaro was only 14 years of age when Gentaro was born. Isn't Gentaro 11 years of age now?
I feel they need a bigger place like in some other zoos. Or have them share a space to make it bigger place for them to roam around in.

I see them only eating grass. Shouldn't they have fruits and more vegetables i see other zoos and their enclosure is more roomy with grass and other play stuff. The other gorillas are playfull even with eachother these gorillas look so sad and miserable...how sad this situarion😭😭😭
I believe they feed them a lot of grass because their teeth aren't looking do great. The grass acts as a natural kind of floss. If they're fed too many fruits there can be too much sugar in their diet that can rot their teeth quicker.
I would like to watch them eat more veggies though.
@@vescucci I agree gorillas love celery it’s what they eat in the wild they love carrots so many other gorillas are given celery carrots tomatoes and all kinds of greens I know Jackie loves mustard greens they should get some local farms supporting them.I know it would make me happy as well as everyone else who watches this channel. And some fruits fruits in the morning so the teeth get cleaned with the greens and all the chlorophyll I think would be perfectly fine though I’m not a gorilla expert. I do know that greens I do know the greens are good for peoples teeth

Kudos to Genki for fighting back. Still, I'm glad no one was hurt. Momotaro is large and could severely injure his family. The keepers know of his food aggression issues, and do their best, by usually feeding him separately.

Been watching Momotaro family for months but, seeing them in such a small enclosure compared to the Shabani family as well as others is ridiculous.
Even Shabani’s enclosure is bad. All that cement and steel but comparing it to this enclosure? It’s completely night & day.
Perhaps the lack of ground area is compensated for by the great height. The total useable volume of their enclosure is great. They get plenty of exercise, that's for sure! The vertical exercise they all get is great for their cardiovascular, pulmonary, & musculoskeletal systems.

Their enclosure looks like someone bombed it with a bunch of debris. I don't see them eating vegetation like I see gorillas at other zoos eating. Momotaro needs more food. Don't know if it is imagination, but Momo's chest looks like he is loosing body mass.

He visto en otros zoo que le dan muchas frutas, mazorcas, yogurt a las familias de gorilas silver back que están en extinción. Momotaro es un ejemplar hermoso y musculoso, por lo que su contextura física demanda mucha más comida vegetal. Genki es hermosa, merece ser bien cuidada, ya que es una buena madre, por favor delen mejor alimentación a la gran Momotaro's family ♥.. Les hace falta mejorarle el espacio para ellos relajarse más.

The Haoko I've seen has been a good husband and father...he and Shabani were brought up with sisters and,they both were caring towards them.
Last year when his daughter was born he held and stroked Momokos hand tenderly.
When Momoko had her illness and was in hospice Haoko was depressed calling for her...that man loves his wife.
Shabani loves his whole family as well.
Shabani is by far the best father,brother,husband, and the best looking of the bunch.

The abcess on Genki's face is almost gone as of this writing. The vets & staff have been on top of it all along.

This is a sad situation to watch. So many of the comments I agree with and many I didn't. For us regular viewers of the Momo gorilla family we all feel some kind of way about this. The one thing that keeps me from being too upset is that I have to remember at the end of the day, they are wild animals. They do so many things that are so "human like" that I think we forget they are not human. They are behaving exactly like gorillas act. Gorillas naturally have a hierarchy and the Silverback is ALWAYS at the top of their food chain. He gets the best of everything which includes females, food, etc. They will often take whatever they want from whoever they want whenever they want. They don't have to ask or be nice about it. The females in a troop know their place and don't usually stray from it and they respect it even if they don't like it. I think what we saw here was an incident that happened naturally and not intentionally. As humans we can't and shouldn't just separate them or punish them for doing what they do. Just because they live captive in a Zoo doesn't mean they are domesticated; they are not. I truly feel bad for Genki and I do want so smack Momo but I do know they were only doing what gorillas do and I think in their world they don't and didn't think too much about it and when it was over, it was over for them. Us humans are going to feel some kind of way for a while. We tend to judge and hold grudges against anyone and anything that offends our sensibilities. I didn't like what I saw Mo do but I have to accept it. He is after all a Great Primate; Silverback Gorilla.

It's amazing how different their digestive systems must be from our own. They can build tremendous amounts of muscle while eating things we can't even digest.
It is more than just digestion.
Actually they don't fully digest all that they eat. They sometimes eat their poop to get a second round of digestion & extract more nitrients.
For humans there are about 20 essential amino acids which we cannot synthesize, so we need those in our diet. I guess gorillas can synthesize all the amino acids they need from their plant food.

Male gorillas in North American zoos have super high rates of heart disease thanks to being fed "gorilla biscuits" in place of tens of pounds of leafy plant material per day. The biscuits are cheaper and easier since they're more nutrient dense but gorillas need to keep their gut bacteria well fed in order to have healthy hearts. Heart disease is practically unheard of in the wild where they forage for greens all day but it's the primary killer of silver backs in America. This zoo seems to be doing a really good job with their diets and making them "forage"

Fun fact: Gorillas are the only apes that can digest cellulose, the material leaves are made from. In other apes, it goes undigested from one end to the other.
I think they need to feed them more than just leaves. The zoo can afford it.
What do you think they eat in the wild? Leaves, grass, bark, shoots & roots--all day, every day. Sometimes wild vegetables, berries, nuts, insects & grubs.
But guess what! They get fed morning & evening meals indoors which we don't get to see. That includes vegetables. In the morning when they come outdoors, they will forage for pieces of apples & carrots, whole bell peppers, other veggies, & peanuts.
They do not have the same metabolism as humans. They have different dietary needs. The zoo knows what it is doing.

Just wanted to add... Every one of you folks who think Momotaro simply attacked Genki for food, wasn't paying attention. She instigated his 'attack'. He wasn't just being food aggressive in this circumstance. If you go to 6:20 and re-watch (maybe a few times if need be, because there's glare and a tree partly obscuring the view, but), you'll easily see that she leaned into him, growled and barred her teeth at him. That's when and why he immediately jumped on her. He's the alpha. He's the dominant one. He's the Silverback!!! This is normal gorilla behavior. He simply put her in her place. He showed her who's the boss, took some of her food, not all of her food and didn't do any real physical damage to her that he easily could have done. Personally, I feel bad for Momotaro. He's in his prime of life. Probably bored much of the time, and sexually frustrated as well. Genki is hardly enough for him. Good mom, but old and anxiety ridden. Momotaro got the short end of the deal here. It's really too bad that he's not set up like Shabani with two different mates. (Yes, I've read the stories about Genki - no need to remind me.)

Poor genki has been abused all her life. I hurt everytime I see her hurt. She always messes herself. It breaks my heard because she is so afraid.
Her eldest son is now trying to hurt her because she refuses his advances. In her last troop when the silverback she was in love with died she was thrown to the bottom of the hierarchy and it's not a safe place to be. She got so anxious she bit off several of her finger tips. 😭 I'm almost positive even though it's never mentioned (PERHAPS SHE SHOULD BE TESTED) I believe she has PTSD from the time she was in the last troop till now being mildly abused. She is always in alert mode and she has bit her youngest son while in a deep sleep causing him to scream in pain. Well momotoro wasn't having it and grabbed her and shaked her. Believe it or not..she didn't for a second out down the grass or stop eating. Which is another issue...I wonder if depression in apes (it's a thing look it up) because they are 98.9 % close to us so the binge eat?. I ask because I study all primaates and I understand she is pregnant but this is behavior prior and is 10x worse now she's with child. She never stops. It wouldn't be Farfetched for her to have PTSD. Hopefully with a new child and kintoro by her side she can rest easy a little more.
Silverbacks of the troop always eat first just like in the wild they take more than their fair share, even the handsome Shabani takes food from the other’s when he feels like it , you have to remember the stress of being the Silverback of the troop it’s hard graft as they have to keep everything under control and keep the family safe it’s all on his shoulders and Shabani has done more than his fair share of raising the kid’s and keeping Annie safe from Nene and AI as AI wasn’t interested in looking after Annie when they were introducing her into the family.
Shabani almost never takes food from them . Au contrary he lets the kids take food from his hands.

If they were well fed there wouldn't most likely be aggression. I think its abuse to keep them enclosed an not fed well. No reason why this zoo want supply plenty vegetables as other zoos do except they just dont. If zoo cant afford to properly care for animals then u give them to one that will

Your heart is definitely in the right place but I rather donate to get them out of that terrible enclosure, otherwise all we’ll be doing is enabling this zoo to continue their neglect. These gorgeous creatures deserve nothing but the best . If the zoo can’t afford to provide for this troop, then im pretty sure another zoo, sanctuary(etc) will. For way too long this zoo and many more in Japan had the time and money to correct this issue and today in 2021 it seems like nothing has been done. I would expect this in China or North Korea, not Japan.

Genki looked like she was crying,, trembling in fear and pain, and even pooping. I think Momotaro matured physically quickly but he's not mentally mature. His job is to protect his family.
What actually happened was, momo was walking by and there was a pile of grass about three feet away from genki. When momo walked by he picked it up. I guess genki wanted it, so she decided to lunge at momo with her teeth showing. So momo scolded her. It's not momo's fault. The silverback gets first choice of food, that is part of the hierarchy. Genki is too greedy when it comes to food and it gets her in trouble.

they are fed inside in the morning, they eat pretty well. I think when they are outside its more territorial.
