Jarrett started the final lap in 5th place. That move when you thought he was going to go low and instead went to the middle was sick. Then he worked that last bumping to perfection, and won by a nose. Incredible last lap...
Coming to the final corner, Jarrett pushes Rudd up high with a final bump, then turns his wheel to angle his car to a more direct trajectory to the finish line (while Rudd adjusts from the last bump & has more distance to drive to the finish line). What a veteran move by Jarrett, won him the race.
Cheever: "He came down and.... I thought I was going to get an ass-kicking..." LMAO!!! That was Dale for you. You piss him off on the track, he'll take it out on you on the track and come and talk to you like a man afterward. I miss him something fierce.
I also heard that when Earnhardt went up to cheevers car, cheever thought Earnhardt was going to hit him. Earnhardt said, I never hit a man when he's in the car. LOL
Cheever knew he was in NASCAR's back yard. He wasn't going to piss in their pool. I remember this live. I gained a lot of respect for Cheever after this one.
This kicked off a big start to Jarrett's 2001 season. If he had kept doing what he did early on, in the Winston Cup Series, it would've been a good battle between Jarrett and Jeff Gordon.
ESPN was pretty genius to come up with the idea of color coding the ticker based on the color of the car. Turner Sports would follow suit later that year with their NASCAR coverage on both TNT and NBC, though FOX wouldn't do it until 2006.
I believe Rusty Wallace did a single car test a Talladega with a car (Pre 2007) and ran 228 at the end of the straights. But had to let off to make the corners.
Was working pit road security for this race and watched Dale come up from behind, scruff Cheever on the neck and Dale said "Don't ever do that again", Cheever replied, "I'm sorry" Dale walked off with Theresa in tow.
@NascarNixon I agree, but that is part of why NASCAR implemented the COT. The idea that if everyone uses the same car, it will be all driver skill and as even as possible. But I agree the competition was great. I remember seeing them in person at Chicagoland and watching Ryan Newman going on to the apron to make it 4-wide in the trioval. One of the greatest races I've ever been too.
00:00 to 01:10 (I'd say 01:11 but that's where'd gets interupted with some techno jazz...) Whoever made that bit of music. I'd love to shake his hand. Nice mix of the Speedworld theme.
that's what i was talking about too but in pre-season testing this year, one of the fords were out doing a single-car run, and pulled 190mph without anyone around, the added downforce of the cars plus reduced horsepower is going to make the racing interesting the slingshot might come back, who knows
After the first lap the commentators talked about earnhardt just losing the lead down the backstretch on lap 1. I think that may be the first time we ever saw the tandem drafting with Kenny Brack and Jeff Burton
Drew Casper I don't think so. The way Kurt Won the 2004 Championship is so underrated in NASCAR history. I honestly don't think Jimmie Johnson would have as many championships had Kurt not destroyed his career.
ESPN was still with NASCAR in the Truck Series and the IROC aspects while the Cup and Busch races starting this Speedweeks became bound to Fox. Interesting.
It's funny I just watched this race in 2020 first time I've seen it. A Nascar fan watches a race differently I knew the best either Dale Earnhardt or Dale Jarrett would win that race even though Dale Jarrett was behind the draft and look who ends up winning it all so I knew Earnhardt would pay back that guy but none of the cameras were on it like they were oblivious to it at the end no cameras caught it except the blimp camera LOL.
What pisses me off is the wreck happens with burton and the announcers don’t want to mention that is in fact a rookie move. Anybody that’s raced Daytona especially before the repave. When you come off turn #4 when the banking rolls out. The car gets kicked in the air a little and air gets under the car. It has a 50yd stretch where the track has a trap door and once air gets under the car you feel like you are on ice and have no traction. Burton made some kind of gross movements on the wheel during that 50yd stretch when you lose traction and the track just falls out like a trap door. It’s a rookie mistake.

That'd be fun as ever if NASCAR had a fixed setup series similar to this one but with different style cars and same format. But I don't think idiot Brian France would do that -_-
Big E got away with so many close calls. Just a function of statistical reality. Only a matter of time. Most guys got away with it and their careers ended before dying in a crash. Nascar ended that weekend in February.
@@MadLadJay98 oh yeah. Sorry. Competition cautions, iroc level parity, nascar regulated shock packages, ridiculous playoff scenarios that changed mid-season, cautions on demand depending on who needed one to help with ratings....You're right. We're living in the Golden Age of nascar.

It looks like him, but I think it's just a fan. The man says something to Eddie and shakes his hand and it doesn't sound like Jeff would talk like that.
I was at the track for all of speedweeks that year......a week I'll never forget, miss you Dale!
they need to bring this series back. it was so fun to watch. BRING IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tony Stewart is bringing it BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve never been to the 500 but I went to several of these
Bring back same shaped cars also.
Totally agree
@@sandmangti7040 those pontiac bodies were awesome looking!
On what would be the final weekend of his life. Dale Earnhardt showed why he was the greatest ever.
Too bad he didn't wreck and get hurt just bad enough to miss the 500. Can't beat fate.
Wow! I had to read that a couple of times.
+Zoomer30 more like too bad he was too ignorant to use the HANS device.
most overrated ever
If you're talking about Jimmie Johnson,then,yes....
Love the sound of these cars back then.
Love that 90-degree exhaust note!
Jarrett started the final lap in 5th place. That move when you thought he was going to go low and instead went to the middle was sick. Then he worked that last bumping to perfection, and won by a nose. Incredible last lap...
He wasn't even in the draft of the leaders with 2 to go. But they got to racing each other, he caught up & passed them.
That’s not at all what happened there lol. He side drafted Rudd. Has nothing to do with “trajectory” and distance 😂
Loved IROC racing..and Earnhardt
what a power move by DJ going into turn 1 on the last lap
Cheever: "He came down and.... I thought I was going to get an ass-kicking..." LMAO!!! That was Dale for you. You piss him off on the track, he'll take it out on you on the track and come and talk to you like a man afterward. I miss him something fierce.
I think we all do.
I also heard that when Earnhardt went up to cheevers car, cheever thought Earnhardt was going to hit him. Earnhardt said, I never hit a man when he's in the car. LOL
Earnhardt also cried like a bitch when you gave him a taste of his own medicine. Just watch him and Ricky Rudd at North Wilkesboro in 1989.
Dale would live just 24 hours and pass away at the same track! What a weekend this was! I miss Dale! He was the Man!
Beautiful cars! RIP, Pontiac Trans Am.
gotta love the sound of the firebird
Eddie had his Earnhardt moment there a day before he lost his life I still remember Eddie saying he whis he could race Dale one more time
Eddie Cheever handled that like a man. Gotta respect that.
Cheever knew he was in NASCAR's back yard. He wasn't going to piss in their pool. I remember this live. I gained a lot of respect for Cheever after this one.
He fucked up bad running him in the grass. He was nervous in that interview for good reason.
this series desperately needs to come back
Well, it's kinda back as the SRX.
Bring this back man loved IROC
need to bring iroc back
it's FIROC not IROC
It's not FIROC it's IROC read the letters after 2001.
+gabryelwanderley it's IROC lol
They did its called Monster Energy Cup
J Ray there’s no good drivers left to bring it back.

Real poor of Cheever to put Dale out of the lead with that move! I’m glad he got dealt with at the end!
This was an awesome series and one of the best finishes in its history by far
I miss the sounds of restrictor plate racing and carburetor engines!! Back when IROC and NASCAR were good!
@malaven11 It aired sunday night on ESPN but before the announcement of Dale's death.
Dave W Sure did, I was 8 years old & I started crying after Dale wrecked so they sent me to their room and had me watch this!
These cars sound so similar to the old school Gen 4 NASCAR stock cars, I love it
41:45 Earnhardt Sr. with a hell of a save
NOU GAMES wouldn’t be his first time being put in the grass & saving it lol. Just like the pass in the grass at Charlotte

Eddie Cheever shoving his head even further up his ass (pretty sure he can't get It in any more, total prick fest)

IROC 50: Dale Jarrett comes back and they race the truck
Bring back IROC! The racing world is screaming for it!
Earnhardts last IROC race sadly.
IROC racing should make a comeback immediately
I really enjoyed watching Earnhardt. But I forget old DJ was also a pretty good super speedway racer also.
DJ's bump move on Rudd in the final corner was masterful.
@Jardbig This race was run friday after the truck race.
Earnhart was a great guy... could have spun that guy right away, what a great driver

I bet he did. He was messing with the wrong racecar driver!!
is Earnhardt tandem drafting in 2001?
jack coffey yep he understood everything about racing and air physics with the cars
