  • The Nubia REDMAGIC 7 was just announced, and I had a chance to thoroughly test this exciting new phone. With an active fan, AMOLED display, shoulder triggers, and the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, let's see how it handles Android gaming and game emulation.

    Being a past RedMagic owner: be warned. Customer support and updates are poor. The cost might be lower but you get no warranty either. Since the device has an OPEN exhaust port that means you accept responsibility for any damage, i.e. water damage. The earlier devices tested showed water damage when exposed to high humidity environments - like in your pocket when it's raining, in the bathroom during a hot shower, etc... You get a 14 day warranty for manufacturer defects, but after that you're on your own. It's a gaming phone, not a daily driver.

    I was already set on buying one before this video. Now I am even more confident in that choice. Thanks for the review! I'd like to say that the pro version is supposed to be out Q2 of this year. It only goes up to 120 hz refresh rate, but has an even higher touch sampling rate. Also it will be available with up to a whopping TB of storage. For me though, like you, I prefer using a controller. I am going to opt for this version over the pro.

      @@RGGeek Depends on what you like. I’ve had a lot of fun playing Dead Cells and Alien Isolation. I mainly play platformers and third person action games.
      Oddmar is pretty much a Rayman Legends clone with great visuals and a nice art style. And Suzy Cube is a Mario 64 clone.
      There’s Sponge Bob Battle for Bikini Bottom, which is haven’t played that much yet.
      Pascal’s Wager is a premium game that looks and plays like Dark Souls.
      The three Oddworld games (New ‘N Tasty, Stranger’s Wrath and Munich’s Odyssee) are all great ports. So are the GTA games (LCS, SA, VC, GTA III and Chinatown Wars), and Bully Anniversary edition is my favorite of the Rockstar ports.
      Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales has a great story and is a really polished game, but not really my cup of tea.
      Levelhead is pretty much Super Mario Maker on mobile. Great platformer that works perfectly with a controller and that offers an endless supply of community made levels.
      Then you’ve got Dandara, which is similar to Dead Cells. There’s Grimvalor, which plays like a 2D DMC/God of War. Or puzzle platformers like Max and the Curse of the Brotherhood, Teslagrad, Dragon’s Trap and Candleman (which makes really great use of light based visuals).
      Transistor and Bastion are gorgeous games by the same studio that made Hades.
      Space Marshals 1 & 2, Time Recoil, Tesla vs. Lovecraft, JYDGE and Neon Chrome are all awesome twin stick shooters.
      Ofcourse, you have the HD ports of the Professor Layton series if you’re into relaxing point&click puzzle games, all of which play better than they did on the NDS.
      And lastly The Talos Principle is an absolute favorite of mine. It’s a third person puzzle game that is very similar to Portal, but with completely different mechanics, great graphics, clever puzzles and a really intriguing story. It’s probably my go to game to show that the mobile platform can cater to actual premium gaming.
      That’s 30+ games to check out. Surely, there must be something in there that you like.

    I'm only a minute in and I'm already impressed. Why don't more phones have touch 'shoulder buttons' for games?! It's such a great idea. Don't get me wrong, I adore clicky buttons, but a phone isn't held like a controller, you aren't given the grip you need to squeeze it comfortably like you would triggers on a controller. However, tapping little 'triggers' on the top of the phone is perfect. Especially if they give haptic feedback like when you are typing.

    Here's something that might be interesting to someone - on my Oppo find x2 Pro, if I left the screen refresh set up Automatic, or 120hz, an emulator like DuckStation would show 60fps but with obvious stutter. It was driving me crazy.
    Setting the phone refresh rate to 60hz, cleared this up instantly. I don't know if this is the case with other Android phones but definitely try it if you notice stutter in emulators.

Love that it supports HDMI out through the usb-c, I can play with my slideout controller everywhere and at home just plug the phone in my USB C hub and play it on the big screen and I can charge it at the same time and when it hits 80-90% I can just switch it to bypass the battery (I wish I could set this to auto). Hi Retro. The "Covid forehead thermometer" is a laser thermometer and you weren't able to get a reading because the object you were testing is reflective. Try taping some matt finish tape to the phone before you start the test. That should do the trick.

  • @requiett
    @requiett 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Most of those contactless forehead thermometers have dual modes: one for body temp, and another for objects. The body one has a much lower range in most devices, and the object mode has a higher range but might not be as accurate. You'd want to check your thermometer and see if it has an object temp mode. I figured this out when I used object mode on my forehead by accident and it said I had a temp of around 95 which would mean I have hypothermia lol

    Curious... Don't most TV's have a zoom in function to reduce the black bars? I'd imagine that playing those 4:3 games zoomed in would look a lot better. Probably won't fill the entire screen but at least you won't see huge black borders all the way around....
    Sucks that they're taking a page from apple in not including micro SD...although i guess you can use a mini micro USB adapter as a makeshift workaround to put your roms in.
    As far as this new snapdragon chip, i was hoping that it would eventually reduce the price of the 888 chip, but considering how hot it runs, there aren't a lot of manufacturers that would be willing to throw in active cooling in their devices...at least not yet anyway. Still for $600+ it's not a bad deal considering other phones with the 888 chip run close to $1000 or more at the moment.

      I own an X2 and it's pretty plug and play for me on a Samsung Galaxy S9. For what it's worth though, maybe you just have a faulty GameSir and will need to get it replaced (either by them or Amazon if you bought it there). I got my first one in July and had it break on me after less than a month. When I got my replacement from Amazon, since it was still covered by their warranty or whatever, it worked perfectly and has continued to work perfectly aside from it's USB C jack for passthrough charging not working at all. I honestly haven't replaced it since I can't be bothered to/don't think it's worth the hassle, but it makes me think these controllers are just unreliable

    Seeing a new phone with no notch and no hole in the display is very pleasing to the eyes. I'm rocking a refurbished Galaxy S9, because of these stupid trends Apple always starts. Oh and because I can't afford a phone like this. Specially not upgrading anytime soon. Since I quite literally use my phone less than 20 minutes a day.

    117 fahrenheit (45 ish celcius) is perfectly fine for most electronics. I wouldn't recommend charging a battery while it's at that temperature, so ideally you shouldn't be charging this phone while gaming, but it should be fine-ish for discharge, so you can play at that temperature reasonably safely. Obviously, though, colder is better.

    Amen to the no punch-hole camera! Its criminal to have a camera punch-hole in gaming phones. We want a seamless real estate that is completely immersive. A lesser bezel is always appreciated. I think other gaming phones should take note (especially Xiaomi Redmi K gaming series and Black Shark for now), considering their over-the-top value proposition, they should take away the front camera punch-hole or bring back pop-up selfie cameras.

    • @AlexDiaz-gw5ov
      @AlexDiaz-gw5ov 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. It would be quite higher. Simply because of the company size, It makes using snapdragon chips more expensive because of the upfront investment needed. But AYN supposedly said that they want to stay well below the $499 price mark for everything they do. So, even a 870 based device is not happening until a year and a half from now.

    There was this app I used with my LG G3 back in the day to reduce the resolution of my screen, might help with getting rid of the black bars. Resolution changer I think it was called. I used it cuz a 2.5k screen at the time with an SD801 was pretty taxing on games, used it to go to 1080p or 720p and it worked out wonderfully.

    This is a beast of a phone but the things is the GPU doesn't even at max frequency, so there's no phone that can exert its full potential at max. such a waste for a compute units of the GPU.
    anyway, its still the best phone so far it can run 420 mhz, unlike others they already throttle to the point that they need to lower the clock speed 200mhz+
    Just imagine if phone run 800mhz full frequency on GPU, holy smoke every game will be fluid smooth, and you can even run more demanding games in the future
