    Man this phone is a power house. The most intensive thing I do with my phone is emulate Ps2 game. NFS MW wasn't playable on my s22 after setting everything to the lowest.
    The RM8 pro has just spent 2 hours playing it at 4k resolution 60fps. Fan didn't come on and battery dropped 18%. Incredible.

  • @retrotechdad
    @retrotechdad  ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Quick note: I forgot to talk further about the Backbone and how it fits with the RM8 Pro. It's very similar to the Kishi V2 and it's a pretty good fit with the phone. The Kishi V2 has a slight edge over it in terms of the aesthetics.
    Additionally, RedMagic is now selling a controller which is essentially a rebadged Gamesir X2 Pro. If you don't care about the branding/trasnparent design, just get an X2 Pro as it's cheaper.
    One more note: the Matte version does have RGB on the back that shows through.
    Finally, what do you think about the RM8 Pro? Do you think it's a good value and worth considering?

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The value is out of this world I believe. Sure it's not perfect, no MicroSD comes to mind but the power of that SoC, paired with excellent thermals is what every generational leap should feel like but rarely ever does. SD knocked it out of the park and Nubia is wrapping it pretty nicely for the asking price.

    • @Drivenby
      @Drivenby ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought the 760usd model to use strictly for gaming and my mind is blown.
      Its amazing, specially for gaming.
      I honestly think this is closer to a low powered pc than a regular smart phone.
      This has the battery and the cooling to drive itself to 100% for hours.
      You will run gc and ps2 arguably as well as the 6800u and steam deck for likely longer too.
      As a main phone, I dont know if its worth it since for me phone = work.
      I need imessage, so I must have an iPhone for work unfortunately. I have been carrying my rm8p all day everyday though

    • @Drivenby

      Forgot To mention switch emulation has a chance to be even better than it is on the deck as skyline progresses.

    Man, this absolutely demolishes the Edge experience. With all the details and QoL features put into the gaming overlay here Razer's nexus is baby's first launcher in comparison. We're so, so close to having an amazing Android handheld - Redmagic has native mapping for the capacitive triggers and they now sell a RM-branded version of the Gamesir X2 Pro (looks incredible in that, by that way), we NEED them to just take the last step and get a plastic shell with native controls wrapped around this thing for an extra $100 premium. I' be more than ok if it was just a Gamesir permanently attached.

    • @retrotechdad
      @retrotechdad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed! They keep inching closer and closer to its final form, a dedicated handheld. Yes, this pretty much destroys the Razer Edge in nearly every way.
      Baby's first launcher... 😅🤣🤣 Amazing.

    • @Akaraah

      Also, adding micro SD card support with exFAT. If it featured that, there would be no other high-end smart device with such value for the price.

    Great in-depth look at this phone! Oof, that tear down hit like a punch to the gut. One cool feature of this phone is separation charging. Once turned on, it will draw power straight from the charger and not charge the battery - less heat, won't wear out the battery faster. (not sure if this feature is unique to the Snapdragon 8 gen 2 or just a software implementation by Redmagic)

    Great review! I've watched several reviews of this phone on TH-cam, but none of them were as comprehensive and detailed as yours. I also wanted to commend you for your bravery in doing a teardown of this brand new device. It's not easy to take apart a phone, especially one that have complex internal components, but your dedication to providing your viewers with a comprehensive review is truly impressive.
    Before I was not sure to get this phone or S23 Ultra (I still currently own a S21 Ultra). Your video has convinced me to seriously consider this phone as my next purchase. Keep up the fantastic work, and I wish you all the best with your channel.

      I wouldn't expect it to grow that quickly. Developers aren't going to be quick to release Android games since people have shown they are unwilling to pay for games on their phones, that's why the freemium games have taken hold. Plus not everyone is going to have these high end gaming handsets so if they did release a game they are going to target the input method every user has, the touch screen.

    Nice!!! I wish they made a handheld, a 16x9 handheld. Or a 16x9 slab so we don't have to put up with pillar boxing for anything outside of android gaming.
    They'd make a killing if they made something like the Ayn Odin or some all in one device. If it was a handheld, I don't think updates would matter as much, and that lack of an SD card slot really sucks, for a gaming phone to not have one? Where you can dump tons of LARGE ps2, wii roms on? I definitely want to upgrade to this phone but my 7T pro McLaren edition from T-Mobile still runs like a champ even to this day! I'm going to do one last insurance swap to a get fresh Unit and wait a couple of months before I pick up one of these or the 8S LOL! There's only a few things missing to make this the perfect phone, all it needs is a IR blaster, QHD+ display, wireless charging (international version has a unused port on one of the batteries, just clip one there), Swap out the dual nano sim tray for a single sim/SD card tray with e-sim support (probably just international only, Chinese markets still prefers dual sim) & a few improvements to the software to truly make it better than any Galaxy that Samsung will make!
    If they could cram all of that into the same 6.8 or even 7-inch form factor I would more than happily pay double the price for it!!!

    I am currently looking for a replacement for my Black Shark 3 and it looks like the RedMagic could be a perfect candidate.
    I will probably wait for the RedMagic 9, which is supposed to have the Snapdragon 8 gen 3.
    That SoC should handle every emulator without too much trouble, even Nintendo Switch games like Zelda BotW or TotK should run on it at full speed. Furthermore, Switch emulation will improve in the near future, since we now have the successor of Skyline called Strato in development. Additionally, Yuzu will also get native code execution soon, which means that the ARM code of Switch games will run natively on Android phones instead of passing through an emulation layer, like it is the case now (after all, emulating ARM on ARM seems a bit ridiculous to me).
    The most interesting emulator though will be Cassia. It is an emulator, scheduled to release in 2024 (Q1 hopefully), which will emulate PC games on Android. It will be based on the FEX x86 emulator that is currently available on Linux and it will use Wine or Proton to handle the Windows layer. The DirectX backend will be handled via DXVK as far as I know. Since Cassia is developed by some former Skyline devs, I am sure that the emulator will be made with performance and compatibility in mind and it will most likely be superior to all the current hackjobs like Box64Droid, Winlator or ExaGear.

    My experience with the phone. I want to love it but there are issues. The biggest so far...
    5G VoLTE switching is very buggy, connection is lost, calls dropped, messaging gets stuck on "sending". The only fix for this through support is to turn VoLTE and 5G off. Unfortunately there is no option to toggle VoLTE. I had to find a code to enter in the dialer to find the setting.
    The phone is advertised as having 50mp rear camera. There is no option to select 50MP. Support says "Please kindly be advised that the camera resolution cannot be changed." Still waiting for them to explain why? Is it going to be fixed? Is the advertised spec false?
    I understand this being a new release there will be issues but I get the feel that support is just going through the motions and not really helping.
    Overall I do like the phone very much but have no confidence in their support. I probably would not purchase from them again at this point. Wait and see I guess.
    Just wanted to share some negatives.

      Thank you for sharing your experiences, especially from the perspective of someone using this as their mobile device! It's very much appreciated. 🙏

      @@retrotechdad My daily driver is an S22 Ultra. For the price, the Red Magic 8 is impressive. Still back and forth with the 50mp resolution issue...they insist the phone is capable of taking 50mp pics, there just is no option to choose that setting(at least I havent found it - if someone has please share!)
      It does take decent pics though. Side by side comparison with my ultra, the red magic actually seems more true to actual colour. The S22 ultra processing however makes the pics more vibrant and pleasing.

I’m surprised as it’s so hard to side load emulators in it and mobile games suck. Micro transactions are the bane of my existence. I have zero problems buying a games but free 2 play is disgusting. What’s the secret to using it for gaming? I’m dying to know.

      I don't use my iPhone 14 as a gaming device, it's just my daily driver as a mobile device. Android is much better when it comes to being able to get emulators setup on it and having access to them. However, I do own a Backbone for iPhone and Apple Arcade isn't too bad of a service, there's some decent games on there without any of the micro transactions.
