the fact everyone was mad at her for “asking someone to hold an award” is crazy. especially when olivia rodrigo did the same thing and no one said anything.
Olivia Rodrigo was holding a damn microphone in her hand and she won during her moment speaking on the preshow when they gave her the award. So ofcourse she had a hard time, Not to mention she asked someone off camera to hold the award, not two superstars like Lil nas X and halle bailey who didn’t get awards. Tyla was holding nothing BUT the award, Olivia already had something in her other hand and wasn’t waiting to be announced but doing something where she didn’t know she’d be getting one. Two different scenarios.
I think people don’t like of the coloured controversy and have decided to hate on her since then. Also there’s deffo projection cuz people are making up that fact she thinks she’s better than black Americans or that she thinks she’s better cuz she’s light skin when she never said it. There’s so much projecting insecurities into tyla which is sad. Lastly, there’s a lot of xenophobia going on because she’s African that she needs to dilute her personality to fit into American culture which is extremely imperialist. Tyla doesn’t need to change herself to fit into the box of the ‘humble just be grateful African’ trope they want her to be. Tyla should be herself and if people don’t like then BYE. With love from entitled uppity African to another ❤🇳🇬
Tyla reminds me of the stereotypical popular girl character in teen movies. Not the mean ones but the ones that cant do wrong in everyones eyes because they have looks and talent. So I think the people that don’t like those kind of characters in movies are the people that dont like Tyla lol
@@maxvendome8662yeah I don’t get bad vibes from her, I just get the vibe that she’s kinda shy and has to put on the show for the cameras and she’s just a lil anxious hahah
The thing is...Tyla's personality is VERY "South African". Coming from a South African myself, we often "act" this way. I understand that people may see her as over-energetic or too much' BUT you have to understand that's how we are raised. I've read a few of these comments that say she lacks relatability or a good backstory, but imo, someone who is talented and clearly works hard doesn't need to be 'tragic' to be good. I find her relatable as she makes music related to the music in South Africa but makes it HERS and she is South African. I'm not saying that her whole personality should be based on this BUT she is going to be relatable for a group, and not all. Additionally, her songs tell a story which anyone can listen to the lyrics and form their own connections to their own lives. She doesn't need to tell a tale of her background to justify this, she is curating her own story by being an artist. Also the award thing? Yes, I do think that it was a bit overplayed but she did say please and wasn't rude about it. Update: Pls read replies, bc I understand my point wasn't too clear to some but I still strongly stand by what I've said so far.
You’re absolutely right. We’re raised with so much confidence. Most of us are not shy and bold AF. You can tell by the music we make and the dancing. South Africa is a vibe and a party every day!
Thats a good thing really but it just doesnt translate well in American culture. Im Caribbean but i dont think Americans should be forced to understand and accept her way of thinking simply becuase shes Tyla and shes "sweet" . I do hope she keeps her personality tho
There's nothing wrong with her it's how us as black people treat & deal with each other I can see the hatred was starting to build when she first came on the scene and her explaining what she would be considered in her country and it rubbed alot of black Americans the wrong way
Lots of the hate definitely started after the racial identification topic…it’s a shame really because we should be encouraging mixed people to acknowledge ALL parts of their heritage, not just the black side. And Tyla is about 25% black…25% has never been a whole 🥴 People can be so strange.
THEY HATE the fact that she refuses to back peddle on what she said. Imagine someone telling you that something you were told all your life was wrong, and having to adjust to that in real time in front of millions. She's given little grace and The hate grows with every award she gets. I hate that it's predominantly from ONE demographic. She's gorgeous, talented and successful. It reminds me of the random and COMPLETELY unnecessary hate Megan thee Stallion gets. They do it to do it. I saw another angle, a fan cam of the award acceptance and she was clearly motioning to Nas. I showed it to a lady who was going on about how "she tried my girl Halle". The lady saw the video and said "she has her perspective and I have mine and this changes nothing". Just goes to show people will believe what they want to regardless of reality. The more successful you get, the more people want to "hate".
tyla has the drive and the smarts to achieve her dream. she is not afriad to put herself out there. shes posted covers, mukbangs, and tiktoks before her fame. tylas condifence is what going to keep her going up. i dont think she was being rude for asking the award being rude, and she doesnt have to abandon her culture, being colored for others sensablities. it seems like having hate train of some sort is part of being successful and tyla seemed to flip it to benefit her (the "uppity african" trend thats going around)
I’m a fan! Her music is great and she’s a cutie. But is she heavily industry pushed? Yes. And are people confused and exhausted with how overwhelming her presence is? I say yes. And maybe that’s why people are turning on her, at least partly
Agreed! I think most people are tired of feeling manipulated and pushed to listen to certain artists so when there’s this obsessive need to shove someone down our throats (Tyla, Sabrina carpenter, etc), it’s normal to turn away and ignore them.
All mainstream artists are backed by the industry. Do you think Drake would be where he's at were it not for Wayne and his connections? Do you think Kendrick or The Weeknd would be as big as they are, if Drake did not help shine a light on them during his Take Care tour? Networks are how artists get big, no mainstream artist gets there without support from the industry in one way or another.
This is crazy because Megan Thee stallion is also clearly getting pushed by Roc Nation but people have taken to her getting pushed well it’s crazy people are ok with certain artist getting pushed they do know that most famous artist have to get pushed by their management team or label to have success
I’ll be honest and say I did think Tyla shouldn’t have asked Halle to hold her award-however, it really isn’t that deep, whatsoever 🥴 But people have been waiting for a moment to pounce on her, ever since that racial classification conversation. I’m so happy Tyla didn’t pretend to be fully black like so many mixed artists do. She’s about 25% black…and you want the woman to claim that identity?! 😂 When none of you who have 25% white genes could ever claim to be white? 🥴 Nah, she did the right thing and I think it’s been misinterpreted as elitism when really, the one drop rule isn’t a thing in every country and those countries which don’t follow it, are correct. Learn something from her, instead of being ready to flex that tired xenophobia 🙄
Thank you, she predominantly non "black" when you look at her overall ancestry Irish, Indian, Mauritian (Indian) and Zulu. "Black" is treated like a rec center where anyone can be "black" but other ethnic/race it's treated like a gated community. Who cares if she identity as "black" or not, that's barley even her ancestry anyways.
They should both be getting shine but the industry wont allow. The industry has been having black american artists fight for scraps by only ever classifying them as rnb or hiphop or only ever awarding them in those categories, and now they are doing the same to us africans, which is why we only ever get nominate in one category even though artists like tems, ayra starr and tyla herself can fit into so many other categories. I also feel like tyla is the only african getting that shine because she's the main one making a marketing push in the US. The rest are aiming for a more international reach
I hate that we gotta have discussions about some things. Ppl just wanna take an issue with everything and they leave their brain behind when they do it. I appreciate that you invite everyone to share their opinions but I’m like damn do we rlly gotta entertain the dumbest shit lol
If Tyla had put that award on the floor like Chappell Roan did there'd be even more think pieces about how she should've just asked someone to hold the award for her.
Tyla isn’t an afrobeats artist. She is an amapiano artist. Afrobeats is Nigerian amapiano is South African. The fact that these two things are being grouped together is problematic. And the fact that a light skinned racially ambiguous artist is being propped up above black Nigerian artists in their own categories is problematic. Is it her fault directly? Absolutely not. But I think that the powers that be are really trying to push her in an attempt to lighten and brighten the face of African music genres, just like what’s happened with all other types of black music. Black Americans are peeping it and while I don’t think the hate towards her directly is warranted, her not acknowledging race, out of fear or obliviousness to how much it unfortunately does matter in this country is going to be a turn off to a lot of people unfortunately.
@@thobileluthulifrankers7612 Please this should be a comment on its own. She represents a small democraphic, which is the coloured people. But she is not an accurate representation of a South African girl. It's very misleading. A huge democraphic of South Africa, which is black people, does not look like Tyla.
9:39 Mariah carey, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Etta James.. are all artists I can accept Diva behavior from cause they got the talent to back that behavior up. I’ll even let Diana Ross & Rihanna slide cause they got the catalogues to back it up. Tyla is not up there to be acting like a diva yet.
She's a product of the ongoing issue wit labels today - she has NO artist development. They are just giving these young adults money and fame but no training. That was clear with her breakfast club interview. She was asked the hard questions and she just looked at her manager or whoever she was to save her.
@@4uCraziiewe genuinely don't listen to afro beats. we just don't. no matter what fame she succumbs to, she won't successfully take off in the american sector bc we just don't listen for afrobeats lmao. water stuck bc it's a pretty, smooth summer song. something like burna boy. if it hit, it hits. however, we aren't *actively* looking for it.
Agreed. I think the problem is she's bubbly and cute now, but to the Americans market that gets bored and annoyed very quickly, we expect growth and maturity at certain stages of success or better yet, appreciation of your fans. We're use to a certain standard set previously so her behavior might play well oversees or on the continent but you have to tone it down if you want longevity here. Oh and you have to have GOOD MUSIC which is something people are over looking. Being cute can only get you so far, ask an artist like Cassie who was beautiful. One bop is not enough
Its really funny how she said the award was yoo heavy for her to hold but when shr got to the red carpet she started taking pics while holding the award with one hand
@@thobileluthulifrankers7612 that’s a question for them😅 Edit: I guess because she got famous seemly quickly. She’s been in the game 10years and water was like her 5th or 6th single with no album or tv show or movie out previously. And people can see that she’s not a gimmick. She has the singing chops and the talent to be long-lasting 😅
Finally, some fair reporting! We, South Africans, are humble but confident; and Coloureds in our country are known to be loud and expressive, hence Tyla’s personality. This pseudo hate train is tired. I’m glad our national gem is shooting for the stars! 🇿🇦
I don’t believe it’s that exactly. Honestly I think after the colored debacle BA saw her SA fans be extremely xenophobic and cruel at times literally calling BA slaves. Those actions unfairly have been applied to her so her small hiccups are over analyzed and act like a confirmation bias. She hasn’t done anything and just seems to be caught in the middle of diaspora wars
I’m not a fan of her music, not through hate, it’s just that we don’t listen much to this kind of music in SA , but I’m a big fan of her and her career. It’s amazing to watch a fellow South African living the American dream, it’s truly unimaginable, she literally caught lightning in a bottle. But I have to say Americans are too obsessed with this chick 😂😂😂😂.
I think anyone who becomes famous so quickly and starts winning awards they don’t deserve would have the same attitude. People simply don’t like her because there’s no come up story for her. She’s cool and all but i don’t get the hype
The only struggle is convincing her parents to allow her to pursue music. They only gave her a year and she did enough to get noticed and scouted by Epic.
@maxvendome8662 so true. Lots of artists don't have struggle stories but because she's from Africa people want her to have a shocking sad story. She shouldn't have to apologise for being young gifted and coloured. As someone from Southern Africa , l know she is coloured and has her own culture. Let her be and stop 'Umona' (jealousy)
people claim that black americans are jealous and confused by her existence. anyone would be confused by someone who's first award was a grammy and you heard one song by them. i'm not a fan bc i don't listen to afrobeats. my homegirls, it's the same thing 😂. i don't hate tyla, but i'll never stream her. it's just like burna boy, wizkid, and tems. i don't listen to their music. now before you reply to me saying i must listen to sexy redd, she was never a part of my playlist. i still have mariah carey's entire discography in my playlist. truth be told im a foxy brown type of girl. if i want to hear a girl sing, ill listen to mariah, ariana, brandy, tinashe, etc. tyla just never did it for me. however i am happy to see a woman from south africa tearing the scene up. idc about the award stuff, people hate on celebrities for everything they do.
You sound like an RnB person. I suggest you listen to Tyla's song title Butterflies it's so good. It's her full RnB song and that song showed me that Tyla is a versatile artist. Listen to the song and give me your rating about the song.
do i think tyla was doing too much? not really. we've seen a glimpse of her personality already. she knows she's that girl. and i think that the entire video of halle, lil nas x and her was taken out of context. however i do believe that she didn't deserve that award. i find it a lil wild that you completely ignored the other african artist in the best afrobeats category! ayra starr! she's always been that girl! im not trying to compare ayra and tyla because their fans have already done enough of that & there's nothing to compare. the difference between the is language they sing in. tyla sings in english while ayra uses pigin which is a mix of yoruba and English. ayra starr debuted a whole two years before water blew up! and she definitely deserved that award. she dropped a really dope album this year and i've been rooting for her ever since she became apart of the mavin (her label) family). she's even done a song with tyla and the two seem to be close friends. i just believe that everyone should been pushing ayra the same way they pushed tyla. and i don't wanna hear no sorry ass excuse like "but her accent is so thick?! i can't understand anything she's saying!" yeah but Americans love aya nakamura and bad bunny. two non-american artists who don't speak English primarily in their music.
Black Americans are clearly still mad about the “Coloured thing”. I can I understand why they would be mad about the Coloured thing but as a South African 🇿🇦 I also 100% understand why Tyla has to represent her Coloured community.
@@theman9048 African Americans were removed from Africa, given a new identity and they were able to create a new CULTURE. Mixed kids were removed from the Black communities in South Africa, given a new identity “coloured”, forced to create new community of just mixed families, they were also able to create their own CULTURE. separate from any other culture in South Africa. The idea that once someone is mixed with Black, they should identify as Black and ONLY Black_ is a social construct. And this is coming from a Zulu woman in Africa, as Black as they come. All our lives we were told that Coloured is a race in my country. And of course I was always aware of how Americans perceive “Being Black” but I never thought they would take this much offence about how “our masters” decided to run things in Africa. And to HATE Tyla for it, is just beyond me.
I feel like an artist these times you need to be more relatable and humble people are tired of the fake facade and people get anything without having humility and hard work involved. We are moving into AI ( which is so fake ) and the rise of TikTok and relatability.
Honestly, I really don’t like it when celebrities act relatable. Most of the time it comes across as very fake since celebrities don’t have the same experiences we do. There’s only a small amount of celebs for whom it works🤷🏼♀️
@@tripleohcee'Relatability' is a word that needs to be thrown in the bin. Artists create art and we interact with it. That's it. That's the relationship and the exchange between an artist and an audience. The idea that on top of their talent they also *have* to be humble, hardworking, likeable, grateful, and a walking wishlist of ideal traits is inviting audiences to project their own ideals on to artists. Then they get angry when the artist has a personality of their own that isn't in line with who they want or imagine them to be. Artists aren't supposed to be avatars or extensions of their audience... Relatability is really a demand for parasocial fakery. People want multimillionaires to lie to them and pretend that they are really 'just like them', or the boy or girl next door. They need them to justify their come up with a rags-to-riches story--real or fake. It's madness.
She does NOT do Amapiano, she only says that cos she’s from SA, what she does is absolutely NOT Amapiano, please let’s refrain from confusing things. Kabza, Maphoriza, Kelvin Momo, Uncle Waffles etc, so Amapiano, Tyla does fusion that is gearing towards pop, definitely not Amapiano.
I think it rubbed ppl wrong because she didn’t acknowledge the presenters and appeared to ignore Halle trying to hand her the card. If those two things didn’t happen then I believe people would have thought it was a cute moment. Tyla did say sorry and thank. It was just the combination of events. She’s a young girl. Maybe a lil grace 🙏🏻
She didn’t ignore Halle trying to give her the card. She was trying to balance the award on her one hand to free the other one but by the time she reached out to grab the card, Halle already pulled it away. Watch it again. Also, I think she was really nervous. I could actually hear it in her voice. Why can’t she be given some grace?
@@teeraynee fr, the way her every reaction is getting dissected is so disturbing. it's like they want her to act like a doll or a robot just because she's pretty and talented. it's definitely because she's a woman of color from a different country + the fact that her identity directly clashes with the one-drop rule cuz I've never seen this level of cyber harassment over absolutely nothing before.
Tyla is always making headlines. I think the truth is that people are obsessed with her, especially Americans. They tend to forget that she's not 🇺🇸 As for winning the VMA... That was just unfortunate. 😢
Tyla is doing better than most black American artists right now . And she winning in black& white American spaces and doesn’t claim it she’s pissing the black community off. Because they want to have an artist that’s black at the forefront because there hasn’t been one in so long . And right now where in a weird time in culture where you can’t be both it’s either or . 🤷🏾♀️

This is where black Americans don't get what what colored is. It's a category that doesn't exist in the states. But for black Americans we would almost all be classified as colored in SA. Black in SA is different from black in America
Clearly her team is doing their job well because this girl’s only hit was water and she has been pushed like she had the #1 album and sold out tours. When she had to cancel her tour because of low ticket sales
@@danellymani205 I saw the video from a different angle and she definitely was trying to hand to to Halle first. After Halle did not move, Tyla said "ah!" Then looked toward Lil Nas X. Stop using the race card. No one cares what race she is.
The hate is very strange to me. She is pretty and talented so I guess that’s enough for people to start dragging her. I see her being like a Rihanna in the coming years
I told my sister the other day that it looks like Tyler is going to get the Beyonce treatment. You don't have to be a Beyonce fan to notice that Beyonce gets hate so easily with everything she does.
What annoys me is when people say we are jealous just because we have our own opinions about Tyler. It's like you just can't have your own opinions about a pretty person. But what about our observation about the person? To me she's a bit unlikeable. And yes, she is uppity, not "Uppity African" she's just an uppity person period. Did she really need someone to hold her award? This is not the first time she has done this. Respectfully, she's not there as an artist. And this thing of saying we are jealous of pretty people, is part of the reason why pretty privilege continues to prevail.
because its the dumbest thing to be mad about she hasn't hurt a fly and you guys are out here crucifying her like dannng she said please and thank you was she supposed to bow down too and kiss there feet before she asked too?
Wow, people expected Tyla to have grown up in some hut with 20 siblings sleeping on the floor and eating nothing but ants collected from some anthill and was riding lions as a form of transport to go to school while being “helped” by humanitarian projects from the West. The “famous” African image the world has about Africa. Nope, get over yourself and learn something. African has both good and bad parts just like everywhere else. She has her own struggles and she been making music for long time and worked hard for it. She got lucky with the Water song mainly coz of TikTok. Give the girl a break, geez. And about the race thing, I hope Americans understand that USA is not the whole world. As someone who has been in South Africa, the colored thing is a real thing there, it’s recognized and generally accepted by everyone even the government. Now all of sudden Tyla has to change that identity and start looking at things in a different way when that’s all she has known her whole life, apparently because USA is the whole world? Wow😂. And she didn’t ask Halle to hold her trophy she asked Nas. Y’all just hating on that girl for no reason.
Lmaoooo the first part is so hilarious and true. People have this preconceived notion about African folks and how they live. Clearly, Tyla is teaching them she’s far from the struggle bus. 😂
This is very balanced and well thought out commentary. You didn’t dunk on Tyla. You highlighted her achievements and personality very well and also pointed out what those who criticise her are saying
Eh that situation at the vma’s rubbed me the wrong way, I also didn’t like it when Olivia Rodrigo did it either, idk why it just seemed so weird to me. Like cmon you’re TWO hands can’t hold a reward? (Which if heard is max 10 ponds) She wasn’t even grabbing the mic or anything either. I Lowkey unfollowed her on Spotify and un-added her music after that and maybe I’m crazy for that but I can’t help how I feel😅🤣
@@rahmahajjem9923 plus I’m also pretty sure someone offered Olivia to hold her reward which makes the situation a bit different too, if tyla was offered by someone to hold her reward it would’ve been different but it’s almost like she expected that someone would do it for her which feels a bit like entitlement to me.
@@raquelnavarrete776I don’t it’s that deep I saw a video of Nicki doing the same thing and cardi b. I think people are using as an excuse to hate on her
People say Ayra Starr is better but they are both Certified Uppity African its just that Tyla is more energetic and Ayra is more chilled, even Tems, its an African thing to be confident and in love with yourself to that extent
Her team is actually nuts because a lot of the new talent has been self destructing, and they have made sure to keep her focused on music. Hopefully, the Rihanna 2.0 experiment doesn't feel.
I find it funny how pero were so quick to come at her to hold an awards show people should really quit coming at tyla and being so quick to attack her I never understood why anyone would hate on her people should really stop attacking her
As a south African 🎉 and black by the way, i think black americans have this perception that african has to be subservient and be grateful for being recognised in your continent . Pls note, america is not the world. I came to realise it is your lack of basic knowledge and unwillingness to learn about cultures and heritages of especially africans. We as south africans will come for anyone and as a nation if we see you bully and try to intimidate one of ours. Note: we in south africa may have our differences at home, but when an outsider becomes 'uppity' with us we will come for you im talking ALL south africans. Black, white colored indian etc. We pull together like that. TYLA is a self confident and self assured young woman thats how we are. We are not subserviant. Just because she let you know that she is colored that what she is classied as in her homeland. Coloreds is south africa have a rich and vibrant heritage and are proud of it. Must she now deny her heritage to pamper to the americans sensabilites? We have been oppressed long enough and we are not eilling to take it anymore. Put it into perspective, if an african american came here and to us would fall into the colored ethnic group because of the tone of their skin, when asked are you american and you say ' yes, african american' we certainly are not going to get worked up about that. You are what you identify as. Noone is going to say you are here, be grateful and follow what we say. We respect what you see or identify yourself as pls accord the same respect. What an intelligent person would have done was ask and learn why Tyla identified as she did.
Is there a rule saying you have to carry your award while giving your speech? What makes people think and feel Tyla is playing games with other artists? The please please help me carry, so sorry Thank you so much shows me clearly Tyla was in need of support and its so cool she has the guts and humility to ask for it! How about preparing artists the award is flippin heavy or have a tall sleak table where the award can be placed while giving the speech. Solution better than confusion
She’ll be forgotten in USA in a few months. We know Africa will keep her on top. She doesn’t need American support. No one needs to be popular in America to be famous.
You should all do your research before coming to the internet. Tyla is NOT Afrobeats, she's Amapiano, you couldn't even pronounce it right! So you can't compare her to Tems, Burnaboy and so forth, she gave an excellent speech explaining how diverse it is. I'm from SA, if you think Tyla is a diva then so are all of us, South African women carry themselves like that, periodd! And also her being coloured, is not her not being black, what?? That's a race here and that is what she is!! For once make videos that educate, instead of spreading the American ignorance. Leave the girl alone!
Let’s REALLY get into it. Olivia didn’t ask anyone to hold it. She accepted it on stage, held it while giving her speech and later on the carpet mentioned it was heavy in passing and someone came to grab it for her. People may very well have been waiting for a moment to “pounce” on Tyla but this scenario (along with others) has rubbed many people the wrong way. I do in fact think the whole exchange was tacky on stage, from her not grabbing the cards from Halle who was clearly motioning her to take it, to asking the presenters (fellow, more notable artists) to hold it the way she did. And had she’d been a white artist asking these black artists to hold it y’all would DEFINITELY be up in arms. But I see it as an inherent lack of respect for those around you type thing. Had the lady who assisted her from her seat to the stage been asked to hold her award, I honestly don’t believe anyone would have had an issue. I think it was the lack of procedures in place that made it look tacky; as if she lacked tact to keep asking the way she did and didn’t respect the fact she’d be given this award. I think her defiant unwillingness to hold it, also emphasized to many they don’t believe she really earned this award or involved herself with the process it took to get it because from their perspective she fast tracked fame. Though, I can understand that narrative and I don’t necessarily agree. Ultimately, I just think shawty is often tacky as heck. Down to staring in the camera, as she suddenly stopped dancing to Mamushi 😂. And lacks the American understanding of media training. Ultimately, I do think people have a right to be bothered by this situation but also should identify why they see it as a way to dismiss Tyla entirely from this one exchange.
FKA twigs is the perfect example of what Tyla's said. she been releasing the finest most sophisticated experimental music from the past decade but media still categorizing her as "Alternative R&B" when most of her music doesn't have ANY element from this genre. and that's just because she's black. Tyla did the right thing. being a POP star is not only following the script but also standing up for what is RIGHT.
If Tyla was a different race. Let say filipino, and she made Kpop music. But she said she was of some special word that means an offshoot of Spanish. Not Asian. She would be in the same mess she is in today. Lol. Yes she is is coloured. Yes she is mixed. But on the international stage coming from Africa, you claim Blackness before your Indian or Irish heritage. Especially if the music you make is black African before Indian or Irish. Though she and Hallie can pass as sisters, it felt a little colorist when she asked her to hold her award. Like if Black people are stronger than non Black people. So you should hold the award like a servant. Just a thought. No hate to Tyla. She needs better media training to understand the world around her. Especially if she is going to be a world entertainer.
I feel like tripleoche you have really described facts about tyla it's true tyla as always had l am that girl and you all should know l am that girl😂.tyla could take a picture with with a diva like Rihanna but she will still act like she is the bigger artist😂she has done that to so many bigger artists Even to a whole Anna winter queen of the metgala😂
Tyla will never be everyones cup of tea, and thats okay. Lets get to thr crux of it. Many AA be hating on her becsuse they simply dnt see themselves in her or what she represents. She is Proudly South African in everything from her sound to her dance and even her demeanor is a real 'coloured goose' as we call it in South Africa. Now with all that said, she has had a quick & a dramatic rise to fame snd she also is doing well in Asia, South America, Europe and Africa and Americans are not happy with her not bowing at their feet &acting like a African housemaid to be thankful for using the platform they gave her. She is NOT disrespectful, arrogant or 'entitled' she purely is her young, confident and mature self. In South African we have this thing where we are not star struck. We suppory snd love celebrities but we ususlly hsve a VERY STRONG MORAL COMPASS & will be direct about it. You will also notice she is not following the American norms because she was raised with that in her inherently. Also if she denies her roots she will learn as Trevor Noah has... our people wont stand for it.
I think because of past comments and the whole colored thing people see her as disingenuous and disrespectful. Now I did see a problem with her asking somebody to hold the award cause she’s gotten many awards and atp you should be used to it. If somebody like Beyoncé can hold 6 at 1 time Tyla can hold that 1 award. I just didn’t get it. Then to troll on Twitter later that night and go by “uppity African” she does stuff like that to be funny but it’s always taken the wrong way. So idk maybe tyla has an icy personality and u have to warm up to her.
Yeah a VMA award is 7 pounds basically. Grammy awards are about 5 pounds & Tyla had no problem snatching it from that man. Beyonce held 5 Grammys together at the same time. That’s 25 pounds all together. Also I definitely thought her making “uppity african” her bio made it worse. She should’ve just stayed quiet & let it pass.
I remember when Rihanna came on the scene. She was humble! Tyla came through the door, from another country, not wanting to do interviews and explain how race works where she’s from. Media training! You can’t come over here and act any kind of way and not want to respond to questions. We don’t know you! She has to build that Diva-ness. If an American artist went over to Africa to “make it” you best believe Africans would speak on it too! She is being pushed on us and she doesn’t seem grateful. When she won her BET award she didn’t seem humble. It was like she just expected to win. There are many amazing afrobeats esque artists that are better than her. Halle tried to give her a card at The vma’s she paid her dust! Then wanted somebody to hold her award. Girl bye! Myself and many other woman peeped it as soon as it happened. She’s young and head strong, but somebody on her team gotta calm her down. She wants our American money, so she needs to get with the program.
lol i'm sorry but it looked shady, BUT if that's just how she is and there wasn't any malicious intent, then people need to accept it and move on. Don't think there should be a pile on, but when I first saw it my immediate reaction was 'Ummm! okay Diva?' lol and i don't think its people overreacting or hating to also have had that immediate response. However all people involved have literally said they don't care. Time to wrap it uppp and no one needs to be indignant on anyones behalf.
i think ppl dont like her cuz her fame come up was just like 🧊 🌶️ yet nobody knows who she is really but acts like she is an OG celebrity that been relevant for yrs. i don’t think she is a problematic person its just that she has higher expectations when she just a new artist. to me her music is quite mid she can sing a lil but gives more bubblegum type music. now she got her fame we just see her as conceited person with no struggle like others had like there’s no story.
So what if she was handing over the award to Halle. Tyla isn't beneath Halle, they are both just people and should be treated accordingly. What happened to humility? The thing about us Africans is that we don't subscribe to the same notions of celebrity that the West does. She could have been handing over that award to Michael Jackson for all I care and it wouldn't have mattered because under all that celebrity he was just a man not a god or some idol.
Nah sorry hold your own damn award . PERIOD 😂 Tyla really be giving off vibes of. I’m too good to hold my own award. Or someone hold this because I don’t have to ever do anything for myself because I’m such a diva It’s annoying.
There’s an obsession with humbling BW in America that she’s probably not use to. We’re mad she won’t Americanize her entire identity and we’re mad she asked someone to hold an award….something sooooo many people have done in the past. The sooner she realizes this the sooner she can ignore the noise and keep it pushin
As a South African what I find frustrating is that americans refuse to reconcile with the reasons why the western market is the center of the music and arts industry globally. Some Americans seem to believe that this came about through the merit of American artists and therefore American audiences and industry actors are inherently entitled to some level control over anything that does "make it" in the American music scene given their experience and role as "taste makers". The reality of the situation is that American entertainment dominance exists in the shadow of American imperialism and global military and media dominance. The infrasture americans use to market their artists globally is the same infrastructure used to spread anti-indigenous exploitation propoganda around the world. To me American audiences are not simply being used or pandered to in the way some of y'all think. African and other global artists are being forced to interact with y'all to achieve the noteriety and importantly fair monetary compensation for their contributions to global artistry. Americans created and upholds systems of hirearchy that place Americans and American money at the center of the musical universe. Its seems uncouth then for Americans, who benefit from this system, to be mad that global artists are particpating in the fucked up music industry that y'all established and maintain, which demands a level of pandering and assimilation. In an ideal world global artists would not have to assimilate or "respect" the American market in the specific everchanging and unknowable unless defined ways they deem respectful and can rather be judged on the value of their artistry or be met with the understanding that there are cultural differences that affect and inform artistic expression and mannerisms. This ideal world is not yet here. Nevertheless, South Africans and other members of global south are force fed American media through out our lives. Its the reason why the average global citizen can argue nuances in your political landscape with factually informed nuances of the cold war, your presidential assinations, and proxy war politics etc. because our education and media institutions around the world consistently update us on the american situation. The same can not be said the other way around, not for other western states and not even for your our continental neighbours. Y'all dont learn about us because y'all arent forced to, because the subconscious ideology of American exceptionalism demands that you place American existence at greater value to all other things, even your own kin folk accross the sea. So then it becomes frustrating when we see global artists and fans of said artists being told that we are the ones that dont understand and we make no effort to understand American culture. When the reality is we know, we understand, and we are force fed your culture but we also make the choice not to erase our own culture and perform yours to be more palatable to you. In the past global artists like Rihana were forced to do so. Now global artists are in a better position to say no. We can now understand and respect one anothers cultures without forcing one another to assimilate to them. Y'all want a melting pot but in South Africa we are a rainbow nation. We recognise one anothers cultural identities while maintaining and recognising the unity in our humanity.
There is no thing about Tyla, but there is thing about black Africans. They used to be confident people and producing great music. They produced great artists we all admired and inspired many, including this young girl Tyla. In fact Tyla copied everything about them. This confident she has is from this people, they now call it arrogance when is displayed by Tyla. We know their pure rich culture because it was never hidden under the carpet. They displayed it with pride and self believe and confident. Tyla is doing the same, she copied everything. " Teenage Tyla wanted to be an American because only them become famous".She is now living her dream, she is now in America. But things have now changed. Those confident black Americans she copied are no longer the same. They accuse, they vilify, they victimize, vindictive, vengeful and scornful people. Why this inferiority complex? Where is that self believing, self assurance and confident. This people were always walking tall and black was beautiful. Hence their success story in everything. Every style and fashion was from them. What happened? Why this sorry state of affairs. Tyla this, Tyla that, the foreigner this, the foreigner that, light skin this, dark skin that. What is happening with this people? 🇿🇦😊

Olivia Rodrigo was holding a damn microphone in her hand and she won during her moment speaking on the preshow when they gave her the award.

And Tyla is about 25% black…25% has never been a whole 🥴

Spot on!
Every artist that gets successful is industry-pushed. Its a universal fact of life
I’ll be honest and say I did think Tyla shouldn’t have asked Halle to hold her award-however, it really isn’t that deep, whatsoever 🥴
But people have been waiting for a moment to pounce on her, ever since that racial classification conversation.
I’m so happy Tyla didn’t pretend to be fully black like so many mixed artists do. She’s about 25% black…and you want the woman to claim that identity?! 😂 When none of you who have 25% white genes could ever claim to be white? 🥴
Nah, she did the right thing and I think it’s been misinterpreted as elitism when really, the one drop rule isn’t a thing in every country and those countries which don’t follow it, are correct. Learn something from her, instead of being ready to flex that tired xenophobia 🙄
She asked lil Nas x a man never Halle there another angle of the video
She didn’t ask Halle
Thank you, she predominantly non "black" when you look at her overall ancestry Irish, Indian, Mauritian (Indian) and Zulu. "Black" is treated like a rec center where anyone can be "black" but other ethnic/race it's treated like a gated community. @@Toby-g7xAre you sure Tyla won because she was the people choice or the industry choice?
They should both be getting shine but the industry wont allow. The industry has been having black american artists fight for scraps by only ever classifying them as rnb or hiphop or only ever awarding them in those categories, and now they are doing the same to us africans, which is why we only ever get nominate in one category even though artists like tems, ayra starr and tyla herself can fit into so many other categories. EXACTLY!!!!!
Her other songs might not be afrobeat songs but water has afrobeat elements from the beat down to the video but she ain’t no afrobeat artist anyways

No tf she's not. That's the arrogance right there. Now yall want to compete with us and we already been here. Calm tf down. Yall trying to get attention from the west, not the other way around.

No she didn’t. She was always asking lil nas. She’s turned towards him the whole time. Y’all just racist.

Wasnt olivia holding a mic at that moment? Like if that award is acc as heavy as some make it seem then fair to not be able to hold it w one hand

You should all do your research before coming to the internet. Tyla is NOT Afrobeats, she's Amapiano, you couldn't even pronounce it right! So you can't compare her to Tems, Burnaboy and so forth, she gave an excellent speech explaining how diverse it is. I'm from SA, if you think Tyla is a diva then so are all of us, South African women carry themselves like that, periodd! And also her being coloured, is not her not being black, what?? That's a race here and that is what she is!! For once make videos that educate, instead of spreading the American ignorance. Leave the girl alone!
Her other songs might not be afrobeat songs but water has afrobeat elements from the beat down to the video but she ain’t no afrobeat artist anyways

Wow a balanced analysis and breakdown
They hate her because she is a beautiful biracial exotical queen period that is the major reason they dislike her!!!
OLIVIA RODRIGO DID THE EXACT SAME THING and NO ONE BATTED AN EYE 🙄🙄🙄🙄 (the trophy thing)
I love you Tyla ❤
@@rayeeiffel480 “snatched it quick af” lmaooooooo but she definitely should’ve just remained quiet. She gives a nice nasty

Mariah earned it. Some people need to see the time a person put in 🤷🏾♀️But some are just looking for a reason.
Halle tried to give her a card at
The vma’s she paid her dust! Then wanted somebody to hold her award. Girl bye! Myself and many other woman peeped it as soon as it happened. She’s young and head strong, but somebody on her team gotta calm her down. She wants our American money, so she needs to get with the program.

Nah you guys are just jealous and mad because she identifies as coloured person not black 🤷🏾♀️
Come on now. She can actually sing and is also a really great dancer. Y’all just haters atp
damn Tyla really got dedicated haters🤣🤣🤣
Also, the kind of music Tyla makes is not a direct representation on Amapiano music. Her's I'd say is Popiano, not really Amapiano.
No one hates her because she’s pretty- but there’s something off about her!

Its the oversaturation people seem to be tired with not so much with tyla as a person.
FIRST (I'm actually third..)
