It is nothing like this. It doesn't only act in oppositional things, it also does things like bring a drink to your mouth, awaken you in the night touching you without you wanting it to in ways that make you feel so violated- yet it is your own hand. It drums it's fingers, it points, gives thumbs up. Much more complex than what people understand, which makes sense because it is so rare that it is extremely hard to study. 17 months.
I actually feel bad for people with this disorder, like of that happened to me I would just want me hand to be removed

It's important to note that this only occurs when the two hemispheres of the brain are unable to communicate effectively for some reason. There are theories that suggest that the hand acts as if someone else controls it because it is the non-dominant hemisphere of the brain 'acting out' to make its wants and needs known, which it would never have to do when the hemispheres are connected.
Yeah, i pretty much think that if you left hand make your life like a hell, so one of your hemispheres just hate you.
That's also why its your left hand more often then not AFAIK, because your left brain (which controls your right side for reasons) is the one that can speak
This makes sense along with the fact that this condition is mostly seen in people who have had a stroke

@@dyld921 I’m unsure but I think it might still be their left hand? Speech centers should still be in the left brain, but I’m not an expert, maybe it is the non dominant hand

This is absolute terrifying and I feel terrible for anyone who has to suffer from this. I’d like to imagine it would tease you and annoy you and leave it at that but sadly, I’ve heard of this taking lives or making you do terrible things on its behalf.

@@FallingDrop234 I found this: "Alien hand syndrome (AHS) is an extremely rare disorder. It is so rare, there appears to be no available prevalence studies". If there have been no prevalence studies, they probably pulled that "9" figure out of their ass, but it might not be far off. Who knows.
I remember the first time I heard about this condition was from a book that spoke about a very old case probably more than 100 years ago. Seeing it in a video form definitely shows the struggle. I hope treatment gets somewhere one day.

I just wanna note to you that the video is exaggerated to a fault. The affected hand usually doesn't act aggressive at all, but rather more automatic and reflexive. The hand will be uncoordinated, and it may even perform tasks that oppose the intent of the patient, BUT it wouldn't be as far as aggressively yanking your blankets or throwing lids.. And it will most definitely not start attacking you out of nowhere. Affected hand is typically not really able to perform complex tasks anyway, it's usually something simple (unbuttoning, grabbing, squeezing, etc.)
Oh, not to mention the patient doesn't typically regain control after each time the hand acts up like it was depicted in the video. It's usually rare and random when a patient actually gains control.

Not that this makes the condition way better.. But affected hand wouldn't usually just attack it's owner or act aggressively.
This must be so frustrating. I can only imagine what it would be like physically having to fight with yourself to do such simple things in life.
I had no idea something like this was real. I found out about it while reading about the character of Dr. Strangelove. I genuinely hope everyone with this affliction lives to see the day when it can be cured. No one should ever have to live like this.

The sad part is There isn't one universal cause for alien hand syndrome. But it's always caused by some kind of damage to your brain in a way that disrupts your movement and control. Usually, when someone chooses to start moving their arm, they activate multiple extensive neural networks within their brain.
I guess this is one explanation of those old "possession" cases huh

I was hospitalized with Encephalitis once and on my way to the hospital my legs kept moving against my will, all the way there I kept kicking the dashboard, and then when they put me in the wheelchair I physically had to hold my legs in order to make them stay in the stirrups of the wheelchair. It's crazy what you mind does when not completely functioning correctly.
Just recently read about this in a book...but to actually see how it would look if a person has it, is much scarier in a way. It must be really stressful and frustrating...at least I think it would be for me.

Alien hand syndrome is basically your hand saying I’m tired of working with you and tries to go were it wants. (But my theory is your brain has a malfunction with the hand and tries to gain control but lost it)

It's not wrong! Part of the problem is that the corpus callosum (white matter bridge which connects the hemispheres) is damaged. Each hemisphere has its own "motor plan", so they might fight with each other

I noticed that instead of just being misfired neurons and crosstalk, the actions of the alien hand seem to always be within the context of the current action - like it looks like the person has to subconsciously maintain what they want to do (eg hold bottle) and what not to do (ie toss it) but the "avoid" actions get fed into the alien hand instead
Really makes me wonder further on how we really know what we are doing in our minds and when we think and do one action, how many subactions are we subconsciously thinking and being aware of. Might be also tied to gut feelings, instinct and subconscious situational awareness that we don't or can't consciously think of or notice or realise we're thinking of. Pretty cool
My parental grandpa used to have this condition, he never went to see a doctor for it rather he desided to live with it, from what i can remember, he used to choke himself and we would try release his hand from his neck barely, his had would also grab onto any object in distance and try stab himself with it, it was quite hectic.

I don't know if anyone is going to see my comment but I read, that that can be caused when you seperate the brain. Like physically seperate it. It's scary because it's almost like there are two in you. So I guess it would be interesting to see why the two brainparts are not completly connected in those cases(now I am not talking about physicially - but more so with neurons and signals and stuff) since that's what I think might be at play. Simply because cutting through the brain in the middle and parting the two sides can have similar effects.

That's because there's two layers to your psyche. Your conscious thinking mind and your sub conscious acting mind. Both modulate and effect one another... when your brain is damaged and they don't talk, wierd shit like this happens.
There are actually two of you and even many more.
Scientists theorize our conciousness actually is constructed from separately thinking parts and there is mechanism that makes them work as one and creates an illusion of being whole.
When we separate two chemispheres surgically - this syndrome can happen.
Some people say it may be the spine, that the brain isnt the only part of you that "thinks"
There was one occasion that makes me understand this. I had a broken left elbow when I was 7. I was naturally sucked my left thumb when I went to bed. But because I couldn’t put my left thumb in my mouth, due to the shoulder length cast, I began sucking my right thumb.
The day the cast came off, I went to bed and immediately both my left and right thumbs went in my mouth at the same time. It was the weirdest experience! But it only happened that one time.

This was from - after decades of writing right handed that I was switched in kindergarten - I switched back to my left hand, and had been lefty for five years. I had to sign a receipt, and both hands reached for the pen. 🤣

@@mrgamerthebest I never said I had this condition. I said I understood it based on the couple of experiences I’ve had with both hands reaching to do one job. And both times, it was due to my opposing hand taking over for a while and the brain causing both hands to instinctively reach. It’s a strange feeling. But I don’t have both hands reaching or wandering all the time. It’s like a sudden reflex, I snicker out of surprise, and it’s over.
So scary 😦 I never knew about, until I was visiting my sister and her hand was having a tantrum. It was throwing things, grabbing and just was acting like it wanted to hurt, break, do its own thing. My sister refuses to talk about it and denies everything.

It seems like your subconscious is also looking through your eyes with possible things to grab, mess up. And instead of “passing” the suggestion through some kind of rational thinking, it instead immediately passes the suggestion on to the motorizing area.

I would agree except this leaves out the personality of the syndrome. Or with my case. It truly had a mind of its own, and made its opinions known. I agree it could be somewhat our subconscious but that’s a very hard thing to sum it up to because of the aforementioned distinct personality AHS limbs can have. Mine was a true asshole. Like the drunk friend you love but have to get out of difficult situations.

This can happen with the whole body as well. If I have the thought of turning or walking down the stairs, my body will actually begin to move that way. So, when I'm at the top of stairs, I have to be careful, control my thoughts. Crazy!!

This was my first time actually hearing about AHS, well- second time, but this was my fist time understanding what it truly means, and I appreciate you taking time out of your day to create such an educational video for people, we need TONS more people like you in the word to teach us about this stuff, even if there already is, we just need more who understand instead of trying to make it their own thing or try to dumb it down it to lesser understanding.

I would feel like I couldn't be around anyone. At least, if this is a fair representation. This guy's hand seems to act out the most intrusive, destructive thoughts.
I only heard about this today, but I also know your brain isn't recognizing the other half of your body. But, it has to be because that other arm is moving around independently. So, your brain has split your body in two and your conscience mind is only controlling half of it. This is insane.
It's like Neo or some aliens are just having fun. "Stop hitting yourself". I'm sorry, not making light of the situation. I have severe nerve pain. But, this is terrible for real. At the same time, it's just like wow the things the brain can do. It's crazy!
I have nerve issues as well, along with having had AHS for 17 months. It absolutely feels like another person or thing in your hand/forearm. But, it’s actually in some ways quite fun and interesting once you get over the initial spook of it all. I do wonder if there are different types of AHS beyond subsets (such as prefrontal or caused by severing the corpus collosum) because I always felt mine when it would rear it’s head. I didn’t ever not feel it- as I’ve seen most cases explained as not being able to know what it’s doing if they aren’t observing it for instance. Miss my buddy tbh. We created a lot of art.

@@mrgamerthebest”9 people in the world have it” dude if anyone should stop the cap it should be you, because a quick google search can prove you wrong, in fact, AHS is very common, especially on people who had brain surgery or take certain types of medication. Research before commenting things.
Sometimes my hand betrays me, like slapping some thing when I want to pick it up, or dropping something i'm holding, slamming my drink into my face, randomly slapping tables, or refusing to close my fingers around something. I don't think it's this, but no one I know seems to expereince this multiple times a day, everyday. My hand usually does what I want it to, just sometimes, it does it really badly.
I had an experience like this on mushrooms - my left hand got very old and witchy and started demanding things, tapping about and stuff. Had a good old conversation and we sorted our stuff out (I'm a lefty so that helped lol). But it definitely has some malevolent intent in there, the beautiful nasty bugger

Definitely one of the most fascinating disorders out there!
It’s not nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be. How it works is the right and left half of your brain work independently with central neutral tissue between them communicating for cooperativeness. In general one hemisphere of the brain is ‘dominant’ but in daily life it will never be a conscious thing. When the hemispheres are disconnected either by surgical operation or deterioration of some sort (like from stroke) the dominant hemisphere of the brain will continue to function, but because the communication of the two halves of the brain is worsened or lessened, the half of YOU which has no control over the ability to speak attempts to garner the attention of the dominant half. Hence why it does things contrary to what you may want. Essentially this is YOU trying to communicate with YOURSELF that half of you cannot speak and most likely would like to find a way to communicate healthily.

If I ever got this syndrome and it wasn’t just for 30 minutes then I would probably go to my nearest doctor, and request my affected hand to be wrapped. If they say no, I will just keep going to different doctors until they agree. you can get free signatures and your hand is just trapped and can barely do anything making your life easier. All that stress from your affected hand, gone!

@@scottanos9981 Guess i got lucky. That my right hand. Only felt like making messes. When i experienced it. Ended up stepping on one of the cheez-its i had been eating. After my right hand spilled some of them, on the floor when i tried to grab some more. I was hungry. And didn't feel like cooking.
Also. Shortly after, It knocked the roll of tp. Into the trashcan. When i was in the bathroom.

Raises some serious questions about the nature of consciousness and who and what our minds really are.
Very similar to those who have had a corpus callosotomy, where it appears the left and right brain hemispheres now function almost as 2 separate people.
Ion have chronic alien hand but I have brief faints that sometimes result in my limbs moving on their own, especially my hands, usually my left. Sometimes it lasts and I need to sit down or I'll fall over but it can be hard to grab things with my left hand. It doesn't get in the way too much overall, but it's definitely annoying. Hope it doesn't ever get much worse than now.

@@BallyBoy95 The whole condition is scary, it’s him dropping those pills that was sad, those could have been important for him to take, I don’t know what for since I really don’t think there’s a cure, and the fact that he can’t do anything right because his hand just makes him do the opposite.

I remember seeing a documentary about this years ago where a person was being choked by his hand, they also did these really interesting experiments on people who suffered from this condition. (This is a little difficult for me to explain but ill try) They had the side suffering from alien hand syndrome divided off from view of the non affected side and the eye of the affected side covered up. They then had pairs of items that went together divided and put in two separate bags and each bag put on each side of the divider and told the person to grab something specific out of the bag with the non affected hand, without being told to or knowing the hand suffering from alien hand syndrome would grab the item that went with the item they where told to grab.
I feel bad for anyone that has to suffer through these types of things

A serious question: If I had this syndrome, I would tie my hand to my body. But could that actually work? Does someone know anything about it?
Eventually your body will not recognize the other half. So You Will do everything half way. For example, You Will only eat the right side of your food plate, or when wearing a shirt you will only dress the right side. Because in your brain you are already fully dressed. I found about this topic recently and I am both scared and obsessed with it.

@@asdasdasdasd3470 I know that can happen with strokes too. There's a story I heard of a man who refused to go to hospital without his socks on. He then proceded to keep on putting the socks on one foot cus his brain did not recognise half if his body. Scary

My Right Alien Hand moves by herself specially when I sleeping and sometimes I wake up and My Right Hand is tight up extremely strong in My Bed . Also she loves Tables. She Doesn't let's me to see my hand when she's moving.. something comes from my hand o something is living inside my right hand .

Is this similar to what happens when you severe the corpus callosum (the bridge) between the two hemispheres of the brain?
I remember an interesting (messed up) experiment where this bridge was cut and the two halves of the body began acting differently. They would ask the patient a question and the patient would answer verbally, using the part of the brain that controls speech. Simultaneously, the patient would write down an answer with the hand that’s controlled by the opposite side of the brain and it would be a different, more brutally honest answer.
Very strange how our subconscious pulls strings we’ll never be aware of. Makes you think about free will and what really motivates people’s actions.
Similar thing, but, severing the corpus callosum is actually a real treatment for a severe epilepsy disorder when medications don't work. By cutting off communication is cuts off the firings that cause the constant seizures essentially. Sometimes the patient finds it better to have the separated parts you can adapt to, than being afraid of having a seizure at any moment multiple times a day.
There are so many unknown disabilities like these, it makes how little attention is being given in helping them live each day so much more upsetting
I can't imagine living with this the closest I've gotten is my hand randomly doing a twitch

Most do not feel it, some do. It is mostly in non dominant hands, although for some it is in their dominant.
Yeah I would have to cut my hand off at that point

@@mrpoopmcpoopypants7714 I have a friend with ADHD and he's at medical school. He studies for 5 mins at a time, and ends up walking for 10 mins between every 5 minute session up and down the library. It's pretty sad, but he makes it work and he's super hardworking.
