Cpt Andrew. I want to thank you for shearing this method with me. I got myself chain link 12 ft net 5 years ago. I know, not perfect size for somebody who never threw the net before. Any way. After watching countless youtube gurus videos how to cast the net and hundreds of throw fails I was done. But few days ago I saw it your video. I watched 10 times and something click ... I GOT IT!!!. In one throw I got 68 bait fish. I got my record fish on one of them. This is why I'm coming back and want to thank you sir. Now for the first time I'm able to catch my own bait from bow, stern, port or starboard side. Do not matter to me. Near perfect huge circle every time. I like the video and subscribe. I whish I could do more for you.
Instead of two loops I choke up about 2’ below the horn then make one loop on my 10’ mullet net. I’m 5’10” tall. This kept the rope from catching under the lead line during the throw. Out of a 5,687 videos I’ve watched, this is the best method to throw a larger net for an old guy and I’m sticking with it. Thanks for tutorial!
I literally just saw this video went outside and tried it through a perfect pancake I like this better than the triple load I feel all hemmed up throwing triple load
Great technique... I'm not big on fishing, but I love throwing a cast net. Once caught a snook next to a pier with a cast net. It was only an 8 ft net. I'm gonna get a larger net and try this.
A friend sent me this vid and I like the technique. My triple-load tucks the first ~1/3 around my elbow and up over. Easy for me, because I’ve done it that way for years…but hard to teach someone. This is much simpler and works just as well for most situations. Edit: the only time I imagine needing to go back to the other way is standing waist deep and having to get more of the weight/net loaded higher because I’m choking up towards the leadline and throwing while twisting from my shoulder instead of swinging the net.
Hopefully your still responding to people here I’m learning your method and I can get the part of the net in the left hand to spread but the right hand just doesn’t spread out as much any tip?
Before releasing, your hands should be fairly close together. I like a little more than half of the split net in my left hand before throwing. On the release, the right hand really does nothing but let go. Keep chunkin it on some soft grass for practice and it will get easy! 🤙🦀🌴
Heck yeah, practice basic technique on land…then stand on a step-stool and practice (limited foot space and elevated position). Then get on the boat and practice a few times in calm water. Everything changes with a rocking boat, wet deck, and the pressure of trying to get bait when it matters. If you’re going to throw from the beach into the surf, practice “chasing” bait then throwing - when I teach someone, I tell them the sidewalk/street is beach and the grass is water. In the grass I’ll lay out empty water bottles to represent baits - about 5’ to 15’ or more out from the “beach” and 50-60’ from one end to the other, then yell which one to throw at. They have to react quickly - because sometimes the bait does. Slinging your net and watching mullet shoot away before the leadline even hits the water is frustrating…so learn to throw low and fast. Learn to use the waves to hide your cast near shore (if you see the fish, they see you too). Then learn to cast high over railings and obstacles (like rod holders on boat gunwales). And when you eventually end up in the water because you slip, or snag oysters or something and get yanked as the boat pitches, or cast over a manatee who drags you in because you’re not letting it swim off with your net (yeah, that happened by Peanut Island in WPB) - just laugh about it!
I'm older now I've got some Tim wade cast nets. I like your simple method of throughing a net. How would you through a 7 ft cast net not once but many times , without using the teeth. Please share a video.
I really like this method for throwing big nets. A word of caution though… In the event you’re tossing in deep stained water, say for Shad and you inadvertently tangle with a 3’ Gar, and that hand line is tight around your wrist so you can’t just straighten your hand and get out of the loop, you’ve got yourself a one way ticket to Davey Jones’ Locker. It could have been really bad when the unexpected happened. A moving boat on a river and you snag bottom could be another scenario. Luckily I didn’t go off the boat. Do NOT cinch the hand line tight around your wrist. Instead use an easily escapable cuff. A hair scrunchy or a neoprene cuff that will stretch and you can pull free from. Likely??? I didn’t think so either.

Andrew, I'm learning to throw, and your method is definitely the easiest and most efficient. Very nice demonstration. What is the size of the mesh you use? If I were looking for threadfin and larger white bait, what's a good size? thank you.
I mostly use a 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch mesh... if you are only targeting larger bait like big threadfins and big white bait I would recommend 3/8 or 1/2 inch mesh. If the bait you throw on is smaller however, you will likely gill net some. Good all around is 3/8. Glad you found this method of net throwing helpful!
I been practicing your method and I can not get the back half to open. The front left is prefect. Back rear right won’t open. So it’s a half moon. What do am I doing wrong?
Hard to tell without seeing in person. Could be two things... 1. rotating the net as you are preparing to throw instead of keeping the net "in line". 2. Not holding the last part of the net as described in the video. This is important and sometimes I even spin it a little to the right before I let it go. This is a feel and practiced final touch. Awesome man! Get the pendulum momentum with the weights and you'll use less shoulders, but whatever it takes to open it and get some bait! 🤙🦀🌴

hey captain i seem to be having problems with the leds over my shoulder getting caught on my elbow and hand mid throw. any tips?
Possible you could be putting too much over your shoulder, however hard to know without see it first-hand. 🤙🦀🌴

They use monofilament fishing line material to make the nets. The net I was throwing in the video is called a humpback cast net made by Lee Fisher. 🤙
