A gentleman from Milwaukee has one and he would fly over Edgerton, Wisconsin, (25 miles south of Madison Wi), because he knew a WWII veteran who actually flew one during the war. He would also fly it over the golf course really , really. low whenever he was there. I will never, ever forget the sound that plane made. You could hear that thing coming towards us a long, long ways away. He would fly over course like 3 or 400 feet above us. God reverberations that you could feel. Something you can never forget. Or own a P51 D .. Aviator/Collector Kermit Weeks said one of his favorite moments was taxing into an airport at like 25 or 26, years old and his friends cheering as he rolled in with his P51..That to would be sweet
Ehhh, that didn't happen nearly as often as you think, not in Europe anyway, we had air superiority by 1944. And in Africa it more than likely would have been a P38 that they heard coming to the rescue.
Exactly! Does anyone else have this problem with their local airshow? I go to Wings Over Houston and every year and every year I get a survey asking me how they can improve the show. Nine years in a row now I've pleaded and begged them to tone down the music and SHUT UP! I don't understand why anyone involved with aircraft would think their narration of novice level details with news anchor style banter is more interesting than the audio experience of the aircraft we came to enjoy.
The silver is the bare metal aluminum. The stripes are to tell other Allied pilots the aircraft is a friendly after too many others were shot down by friendlies because their silhouettes were so similar to German aircraft. By that time the Allies had air superiority and didn't need camouflage so the grounds crew would remove it using gasoline to reveal the bare metal. It also helped increase airspeed a few knots. Can you imagine being a German and seeing hundreds of silver aircraft flying over your city and not one of yours flying to defend you?

I don't think most people realize how big the propeller is on the P51. It is massive when you see it in person. Its like DAMN!! Look at the of that prop!
Yes sir! They have such unique sound to them. I've always loved the Merlin engine. The Merlin, and the R-2800 Radial are my 2 favorite aircraft engines.

One flew over my house when I was in the garage one summer and I ran out because I never heard a sound like that I thought it was a helicopter but to my surprise it was a P-51 heading toward the Chicago Lakefront for the air show. It still gives me chills up my back just thinking about it.

The cherry on this cake is most certainly the sound. Superb, absolutely superb. When all the circumstances come together, I shall ensure that my 8 year old Grand, Ryan, (yep, his Dad has octane for blood), has the experience of seeing and hearing this as he stands on the apron beside me. No holding up any damn electronic device to record, no bloody pussy-arsed protective earplugs or earphones, his brain and memory is all he'll need, as I did way back in the late 50's, when I saw and heard my first Mustang, here in Australia, for the first time. No doubt that day will be indelibly imprinted within his body as he sees and hears what i did, back then.
Excellent - but have to say Petie put on a spectacular performance at Titusville back aroung 1992. Qualifier - there's nothing like the sound of a Merlin:) Especially two or four!
Well... going back some, the master definitely was the late Bob Hoover in "Ol' Yeller". I saw him many times at the Reno Air Races and captured him on Super8 film back in the '70s. Might have him on Hi-8 as well.
Yep, pouring the tea in I think his Aero Commander is classic - never got to see him in person nor Lefty Gardner in White Lighting. Nothing to take away from the superb performance you posted!

Saw one of these 3 days ago live in Maputo bay, with my kid. I couldn't describe that engine sound, the power. Pure rejoyce. What an engineering masterpiece.
So wonderful to get the whole display without interruption from unnecessary commentary or crap music. Thank you. Having missed out on every air show here in the UK this season, this just ticked a few boxes for me, sitting here after work, with a glass of red. I raised a silent toast to all those who gave so much for me to be able to do so. Also, to everyone in the wonderful community of engineers, pilots and owners who keep this global collection of living history alive for us all. It is so important and long may they continue. Thanks for a great film.

Thanks Steve! Now my head is too big to get through a door! Actually, when I shot that one in particular, I knew I had it. No announcer, the Doppler effect as he did a 180 turns under power very near, the right amount of clouds in the sky, a sole P-51 for pure sound, and of course, Scooter's great "Bob Hoover style" performance. That sound goes right through you doesn't it? I have another video that I'll be releasing in a few days that was shot at Duxford Airfield in 2003. It's of a mass takeoff with Spits, Hurricanes and others taking off from grass and passing right over my head. If you subscribe you'll should get a notice. Thanks again! Steve

I used to live near an Aerodrome in the 1990's, regularly saw Spitfires, Hurricanes and the Lancaster of the Battle of Britain Memorial flight, then one day they had a P51D Mustang the same as this one, silver with D-Day stripes, and the screaming sound was something I will never forget as the pilot made power dives and strafing runs straight over head at near treetop height, a sound you felt through your whole body, absolutely incredible !
Excellent flying that we'd never see the like of in the UK and superbly filmed, a credit to Scott and Steve. Well done and thank you, I've watched this over a dozen times, absolutely brilliant in both respects.
Clearly the work of two professionals, I'm glad this reached you Steve. I'll never see an inverted flypast in a P-51 in the UK, made complete by the great sound quality too.
@@terrytaylor8742 I glad you saw it! It was my first time at Oshkosh. It was the last day, I was tired, and was in the Warbird Gift shop when I heard the Merlin doing his mag check about a quarter mile away. I ran out just in time to capture the video - handheld. It was one of those times when you "know" you "got it"! You might enjoy this video too. It's a little closer to home for you. I had heard from my friend Tim Smith in the UK that much has changed over there regarding warbirds. That's a shame... th-cam.com/video/w3VbpzaNufs/w-d-xo.html
I've seen flying like that in the UK many times. Buy a map of Britain, find Cambridge on it and look for a nearby place called Duxford - about 9 miles away. They have a few airshows every year. I went to a show there where 15 Spitfires flew together in formation - with 3 Hurricanes in support. It's a marvellous place if you like the sound of piston-engined aircraft. There's also an airworthy B17G based there too, 'Sally B' which displays regularly during summer and has a Supporter's club. 'I'm a 23- year member (up to now) and have been on board a few times during static displays.
@Scot Prendergest Hi Scot, I think the US, the UK forces and with them the allies were the best and I am very thankful for it, as all Germans should be.
I'm American love the spitfire p51 but my favorite has always been the bf109 with the db605 Benz all three beautiful aircraft to hell with straping yourself to basically a computerized rocket like the new jet fighters. Nothing's like straping yourself to a flying Pepsi can with a v12
I read about Chuck Yeagers first flight in a P-51. It almost got away from him. There is an optional 85 Gallon gas tank behind the pilot. If it's full it changes the CG quite a bit. He didn't know that..:)
My dad had told me in 1999 that his single biggest regret in life was selling his mustang in 1961. But as a 4 year old in 1960 i will never that same banchee scream as he would fly over my grandpas farm in Johnson county Ky. Nothing like it!! And for a four year old boy it began my pursuit of owning my own. I never did as i was priced out of that possibility when i came home from Korea in '78. In 74 you could get one out of Davis-Monthan for 55k. By the time i got home, what was left there was 250k. And that was my dads regret because he knew that was my dream. He paid 27k for his in 1954 and sold it for 30k in '61. That sound!! How terrifying it must have been for axis ground troops in WW2 and the Chinese in Korea. That sound!!
I remember as a child starting school in the 1950s, that if any aeroplane at all flew over we would all just ignore the teacher to rush to the windows to see it. To quote Steve Earle "I still remember that rumblin' sound". I went on to build models of planes such as this.
*Warbird Videos* I would sure like to know what the model number of the microphone is that you used. I don't see it in the description or comments anywhere.
Your opening shot of the P-51 making it's appearance got me hook line and sinker, I stopped the video immediately and found my headphones. My concert speaker will play next it gets ppl looking in the sky when I do that.😀
The sound in this video is awesome! Love the Warbird piece with 20 P-51's flying formation...wish who ever did this sound did the 20 P-51 sound as well
Actually, the Grumman F-8F-2 still holds the climb record for piston engine, propeller-driven aircraft, and had a better roll rate, to the best of my knowledge. It was flown by the Blue Angels in the late '40s before they transitioned to jets, with the F-9F. But the Mustang was damned close to it in performance, and probably a bit faster at any altitude. And the Bearcat had no where near the beauty or mystique of the P-51, in my opinion.
Just to echo the comments below, without doubt the best video and above all...SOUND..ive ever clapped eyes and ears on and ive trawled the net for years. Saved to my favourites for all time
That scream was basically the American version of Stuka's siren. Can you imagine a German soldier hearing that scream and one second after the explosion of an anti-tank bomb? 🥶🥶🥶
A very nice video of the P51 with awesome audio, I relay enjoy the sound of the P51, it has one of the most iconic plane sounds of WW2, in the same way as the spitfire, I could listen to them both all day, thank you for sharing
My grandfather worked for Packard and during the war packard was building only engines, the Marine M2500 used in the PT Boats and the Rolls Royce Merlin for the Mustangs and the British Lancaster Bombers. As he use to say, they built those engines with Pride in Detroit Michigan
My father Lt. Col. FA Willie Williams used to flyby our house in the late 50s in a P-51, signaling to be picked up at the old Sunset runway in Albuquerque,a 10 minute drive from home.
These engines just sound killer but the squealing wind noises are pretty scary, even on TH-cam. Imagine these massive WWII battles with hundreds of such monsters involved.
The surprising thing is the P-51 Mustangs used to escort heavy bombers like B29 were in thousands. I can't imagine thousand P-51 and hundreds of B29 bombers
I'm here from Brazil and I knew a gentleman who was a veteran pilot of the Second World War, he flew a P-51 in the skies of Italy. He said it was incredible to fly this plane.
I remember going to an airshow at the Owl's Head Museum in Maine as a teenager. As we were walking in, I commented to my dad about how neat it would be if they had a Mustang at the air show. No sooner did the words leave my mouth when I heard that distinctive sound and a P-51D flew right overhead. I stood there with my mouth open for a minute and then ran toward the flight line. It was love at first sight!
Here in St Louis, there's an air show every summer in Chesterfield I love to attend, have a good display of warbirds there, even got to see a B-29. One time I went they brought in a Mustang which was the first time I had ever seen one in person, will never forget that beautiful sound and the amazing agility it had at high speed. Didn't stop there, after the Mustang was done and landed, they followed up with an F-22 Raptor, two of America's best fighters ever built in one place was a sight to see!
Boys if you ever have the chance, get yourself strapped in the back of a 51. Don't worry about the cost since you will never forget or regret it...........AWESOME!
@@joecoolberry911 As per my comment above, I got my ride in the Yak. ( fighterflights.co.nz ) Before takeoff, my pilot told me that when we did the loop we would be pulling 4 gs. However, by the time we had got to the aerobatics part of the flight, on the way back to the airfield, I had decided that my inner ear was probably not going to be up to the challenge, so we kept the twirly bits simple. Great ride - what LafyaBolloxsov said, heheh.
I did just that when the pilots that flew them in the war. My ride lasted about 1 hour and the pilot in from of me was one of if not the best Mustang pilot flying. He also had a P 38 but it did not have a jumper seat at that time. I ask him to really wring the aircraft out and he did just that. Being in a 90 degree bank about 300 ft off the deck at 400 mph is the thrill of a life time. I will never forget it or the pilot. His name was Lefty Gardner and he won the 1976 Reno gold heat in the aircraft I was in. He was a class act and a true Texan. Too bad the Mustang pilots of today don't fly the aircraft to its full capacity. I love to hear a Merlin at low altitude but being inside the aircraft is a different story. Never heard anything that loud. A truly timeless aircraft. I also like to see a refined pilot do Cuban 8s up and down the runway without some guy screaming in a microphone with music in the background. i can get all of that I want in a night club.
Perfect 4 point at 1:18. Commenting as I watch. DAMN!!! This man is a PILOT!!! OHHH HELL,... That's Scott Yoak in "Quick Silver!!! Now I understand. Howdy Scott!!

Just think what the enemies thought when they heard it!!! Lol.
Excellent flying that we'd never see the like of in the UK and superbly filmed, a credit to Scott and Steve. Well done and thank you, I've watched this over a dozen times, absolutely brilliant in both respects.
For my part in this video, thank you very much Terry!
Two of some of the best sounds ever: the flight of a P-51 Mustang, and the “ping” of an M1 Garand :)
And the sound of the Hawker hunter
the ping of a garand meant the clip was out
Howling the Sound of FREEEEEDOM !!!!!!
@@jackbearce108 jack WHOOOOOO???????
@@wilburfinnigan2142 nothing will ever stop me from loving our country 🇺🇸
5:11 never ceases to amaze me just how enormous that propelor is
And that propeller is loud at same time like you can hear it from 1km!
A lot of the "snapping" sounds at takeoff are the prop tips moving faster than the speed of sound setting up a chain of small sonic booms.
I could listen to this all day. Loved it! Thanks for sharing, and glad to see so many others adore that whine and whistle!
What you're listening to there is the British Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The engine that won World War II
For me the Mustang P 51 is an icon, look and sound just amazing, greetings from germany.
Yep! "What's up" from the San Francisco Bay Area (Oakland)!
The most beautiful P-51 video I ever saw. and the sound!
No announcer, OR cheesy music?! You've done the Lord's work. Thank you. One should hear the likes of the Mustang in its natural habitat, unmolested.
The sound's incredible. That bearing down on you must have been terrifying.
Far more terrifying than the stuka.
Fantastic! I love the "banshee howl" this Mustang makes. Great video.
partriarch thats the holy-crap "EV'RYBODY DOOOOWN!!" sound.
LOL I agree with you, The Joker. I know I'd get down if I heard it coming up behind me.
I came here for that oil cooler sound, I wasnt disappointed, that really is an awesome sound
its the gun barrels that make the howling sounds.
@@mileslawson32 Not gun barrels but inner gun ports those whistle.
the best mustang video on youtube, no comparison. i absolutely adore this vid.
I read about Chuck Yeagers first flight in a P-51. It almost got away from him.
There is an optional 85 Gallon gas tank behind the pilot. If it's full it changes the
CG quite a bit.
That sound is incredible. The sound of the British Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Also fitted to the Spitfire way before the P51
I remember as a child starting school in the 1950s, that if any aeroplane at all flew over we would all just ignore the teacher to rush to the windows to see it. To quote Steve Earle "I still remember that rumblin' sound". I went on to build models of planes such as this.
I'm 69, and I still run to the window with binoculars!
Was at volvo ce cambridge depot years back and the Mustang came over, had to nip out and see it, AWESOME sounds !!!
No jabbing intro - just straight in the business.... and that magical sound of the exquisiter Mustang. Great vid. Many thanks.
Paul Ambry: Thanks Paul.
*Warbird Videos* I would sure like to know what the model number of the microphone is that you used. I don't see it in the description or comments anywhere.
@@BioCosmic--Dust Sorry for the long delay - just saw your comment. The microphone is an Audio-Technica AT4073a.
Beautiful! Just beautiful! The sound, the plane...just...beautiful! Thank you for posting!!!
Your opening shot of the P-51 making it's appearance got me hook line and sinker, I stopped the video immediately and found my headphones. My concert speaker will play next it gets ppl looking in the sky when I do that.😀
Happy to hook you Chas! But it was worth it, right? It gets me evertime too, and I edited the damn thing!
@@WarbirdVideos as viewers we live The Experience Through Your Eyes thank you
One of the most significant WW2 aircrafts in action !! Great Video !
I love that characteristic "whistle" of the '51. I wonder if any other aircraft make that sound? And that Merlin - my oh my!
dlkline those PACKARD Merlins do sing their song !!!!! FREEEEEEEEEDOM !!!!!!!
Yeah the Stuka
@@tomskimcdouglegaming806 made me chuckle, that did. Bravo!
The sound in this video is awesome! Love the Warbird piece with 20 P-51's flying formation...wish who ever did this sound did the 20 P-51 sound as well
Anyone thinking of posting a video of a warbird, watch this and learn. Absolute perfection
How can you not love the P-51? Gorgeous plane and this paint scheme is awesome. Cadillac of the Sky!
Wow! That pilot was treating her like a Goddess. Lol. I'm being overdramatic but yes, that P-51 was flown incredibly well. Loved the points on turn.
One of the ultimate prop planes ever developed. Love the sound.
Funnily enough, Herman Goering said similar.
Saved to my favourites for all time
Never get bored of listening to WWII fighters, amazing sounds! Brilliant video thanks.😁👍
That was perfect announcers no music in the back ground like most videos are.thanks what a sound
The sound of those "birds" at full song is FANTASTIC!! 👍😎
That was a nice way to start my Friday morning!
That scream was basically the American version of Stuka's siren. Can you imagine a German soldier hearing that scream and one second after the explosion of an anti-tank bomb? 🥶🥶🥶
Best backing soundtrack I ever heard for a P-51 display. That is one beautiful P-51D.
A very nice video of the P51 with awesome audio, I relay enjoy the sound of the P51, it has one of the most iconic plane sounds of WW2, in the same way as the spitfire, I could listen to them both all day, thank you for sharing
Music to my ears! Best sounding prop plane imo. Imagine hearing that bearing down on you in WW2!
Those PACKARD MERLINS do sing their song......FREEEEEDOM !!!!!
My grandfather worked for Packard and during the war packard was building only engines, the Marine M2500 used in the PT Boats and the Rolls Royce Merlin for the Mustangs and the British Lancaster Bombers. As he use to say, they built those engines with Pride in Detroit Michigan
Amazing to see that after 80 years the Mustang can still impress. The whistling of the gun ports MMHH
@@johnklatt3522 Yep. I had old intel. I was very much incorrect. Appreciate the kindness of your correction!
nothing better than a p51 smiling for the camera, thanks for a great upload, cheers
This is the best video ever of the P51. And the sound is amazing!
My father Lt. Col. FA Willie Williams used to flyby our house in the late 50s in a P-51, signaling to be picked up at the old Sunset runway in Albuquerque,a 10 minute drive from home.
Makes my heart go piddy-pat every time. Every. Single. Time. And it never gets old.
Like an AA/FD braaping in the pits at Pomona National Finals!
This is a GREAT video. Great plane, great sound, no yammering announcer, no music. :D
This video has to be one of the best of the P-51D. Well done Scott "Scooter" Yoak. Your skill is very impressive.
I'm here from Brazil and I knew a gentleman who was a veteran pilot of the Second World War, he flew a P-51 in the skies of Italy.
He said it was incredible to fly this plane.
That sound is beauty with wings.
There is no better sound on earth.
I didn't think the perfect video could exist. This is true beauty captured on film.
Thanks Daniel!
Thank you for sharing! One of the best Mustang Merlin clips i've heard!
Boys if you ever have the chance, get yourself strapped in the back of a 51. Don't worry about the cost since you will never forget or regret it...........AWESOME!
Agree wholeheartedly. Best money I ever spent and the most fun I've had with my clothes on!
@@Bo_Nidle Monday next week I'm going for a ride in the back seat of a Yak-3. When I get my feet back on the ground may I quote you?
LafyaBolloxsov what are the G’s like riding a P-51 mustang. I’m curious, I’m not the biggest fan of that guy drop feeling tho
I showed this video to my grandpa because he flew the p 51 and he said that engine sound was the best sound of the war.
Thanks for giving him a bit of a thrill! The P-51 is a sound one never forgets.
The sound of a British Rolls Royce Merlin engine. They say the engine that won World War II
@@a.c.1474 Nice saying, but the RR was only installed in one American design. Many British planes had them however.
Didn't watch 90% of the video. Just at work, at my desk, headphones on, listening to it. Sounds awesome :D
Perfect 4 point at 1:18.
Commenting as I watch.
DAMN!!! This man is a PILOT!!!
OHHH HELL,... That's Scott Yoak in "Quick Silver!!!
Now I understand. Howdy Scott!!
Still gives you cold Chills to Hear the “Whistle of Death” coming from those Browning 50 Cals Barrels & 30 Cals Barrels.
jamesford ALL US versions of the Mustang used only 50 Cal MG. some of the early allisons had 30 cal but were dropped in the P51 A B/C D/F fyi!!!
@@wilburfinnigan2142 No disrespect intended but at 1st I agreed with you but you are incorrect. The P-51A did have some 30 Caliber installed on them. A total of 310 A’s Were built but less then 100 had the 30’s on them and those were sent under the “Lend Lease act” To Britain. This is Verified. But again over 97% of them were installed with the 50’s.

WOW!!!.....The hair on the back of my neck and on my arms is standing up straight and vibrating, this is just spectacular!!!.....I am lost for words!
Jeez...that gun port scream is the signature sound of a P51. Beautiful bird. Great flying.
Yes, indeed - an specifically the D model, no other variant has it, and if a D has had the ports, guns, or blast tubes removed or modified that beautiful whistle is gone.
Gives me goosebumps every time !d
I'm not content on only seeing a plane's name. I searched the exact model of this plane and it's a P51D-30-NT.
