That guy is an INCREDIBLE bass. Seriously had me going WTF on the "kles" of "shackles"...so LOW! Would put him against Avi and Tim Foust both. Great friggin' job, guys.
Purely my opinion and I couldn't say for sure whether or not this is actually true or not but it sounds like an octaver or similar effect is applied to the bass' microphone. Someone with better knowledge can feel free to correct but that's my two cents as a musician.
iheartknitting You could be right. At the time I first heard it I just kinda thought, for some reason, that he was singing REALLY low (like even lower than Tim Foust or Avi Kaplan can). Think I know slightly better now. And you may have a point with the octaver / octaviser bit. Idk enough to say whether it is or isn't. Think it's his true voice, but low notes can just be so tricky to the ear that we have no idea, lmao
I'm four years late, but, I didn't notice that low note. wtf? I need the singer's explanation, something must be playing with our brain, cause there is no way he got that low that easily, help me
Wow actually the best cover I have seen, everyone is really hitting their notes smoothly and harmonising so well. I do agree that the girl should have been more pronounced but apart from that, pretty fantastic!
My goodness. Every once and awhile I think to myself: "I want to listen to some skin-crawling good music" and none other than the Melodores pop into my head. Seriously this rendition NEVER gets old to me. Absolutely incredible and seriously makes me wish I would have stuck with choir throughout highschool and college. Unfortunately life got in the way- at least I can still listen to super good music.
I think she is. Remember this is a PTX original, and Kristen's part was written for her, and she is a mezzo soprano. This girl is billed as a straight up soprano here and in her other Vanderbilt groups. That makes a HUGE difference. A mezzo might now have quite the high range of a soprano, but the big difference is the tone and weight of the voice. A mezzo is more earthy, tends togo towards the more sultry or belty stuff than a soprano. In many smaller choirs I have been in, half of the people in the alto section were mezzo sopranos because the sopranos were rather high. (And I am a straight up Alto II) Most of this part was written in Kirsten's mid range, where she is the most comfortable and fills the most space, has the most body. PTX is talented and has drive, but same with Ben Bram. He was a genius getting in on the ground floor, and he knows their voices so well. He is responsible for making sure their sound engineers get their blend correct on the road and in the studio. No dissing on the Melodores at all (hey, Vandy was my #3 choice) as they are definitely getting it done. William is adorable and quite proficient, but seems overpowering because his top end isnt that light countertenor of mitch's. Kevin sings the second tenor, which Augie sings here (and he is great as well) barintone was good (no one can be Scott) and I was quite pleased with the bass, better than any other cover . Even if PTX sang this song now, it would be different. Matt is excellent, technically and musically, but he doesn't have as much body and effortless power on that low end, Avi's voice type isn't super common. Upper end might be a little different too. Not bad, just different. As Mitch's voice has changed as he has continued to explore his range. He was barely 21 when this was first recorded. I think she was getting it done, but even with mixing (which they werent to fix blend) I think this part was totally written for a mezzo or alto 1.
Omg so beautiful! I'm seriously such a critic when it comes to Pentatonix b/c I'm a serious Pentaholic but this was captivating. It wasn't exactly the same but that's why it's a cover :) you guys put your own little renditions. Great job! I loved it. Best cover hands down! That bass tho!!!!
this made me bawl goddamn. sucks that i found this cover so late since this is one of my favorite songs but better late than never. absolutely beautiful! binge watching performances on this account now lol didn’t know how insane vandy’s acapella was
Serious full body chills. Oh my goodness. Also...the girl...oh my GOSH, she is good. Wow. (And yes, the guy in the middle [who does Latch] is excellent, too.) So is the guy on the end. And everyone blends so well...and yeah, this is just amazing. Nice job, y'all.
the soprano part is hardly audible and tbh a lot of the notes are chopped off, but this is definitely one of the most well put together covers of this song i've heard. the blending is on point and the tone is rich. the emotion is there and everyone knows their notes. very nice
Hello guys. I'm back. After 2 years of my last critique, I've finally graduated high school and had the pleasure of listening to this song again. 1. I still think the girl is lost. 2. This tenor/alto is freaking amazing dude, idk why I thought the he was overpowering because now listening to it and having more knowledge, the tenor/alto is the lead. He's suppose to be the most overpowering because he's singing the song while the others are harmonizing. This tenor/alto guy is AMAZING. One thing I didn't like, and somehow didn't point out in my last post, is that the bass is forcing his low notes after "take my heart...." up to "shackles.." Idk if he was suppose to force it like he did but he could have kept a melodic sounding bass but instead they went for a OVERPOWERING BASS. Don't get me wrong, he's a good bass singer, but I dont think that sort of forcing of the bass should have happened. Other than that, they were all really great singers.
Amazing tone !!! Perfect harmonies. I hear something at 2:05....like a mic cutting out or some effect acting up. What about the bass........is he all there or is there some effect helping? Just curious. Again, kudos. Great job.
While this is marvelous.. stunning, really... I have to wonder: Is there an additional -1 octave on some of the lowest bass notes throughout the tune? As though someone with a keyboard or synth were adding additional bottom to the line? Does anyone else hear that?
The blend is pretty great although , the only thing wrong I found with this cover is that they can't seem to agree on rhythm either they'll come in half a beat early or half a beat late It was kind of frustrating but it got better at the end
hate to say it but you guys blend better than PTX, and seem to have timing down, and individual skill better than PTX... much love to both :D oh and the guy in the middle has a voice of pure sex. Holy shit latch i literally have showed that to so many people
Keith Mattix Don't get me wrong, this is one of the best blending acapella groups I've heard that is not Pentatonix. (or Rajaton or Real Group, etc.) But PTX not only blend decently well but are, at the very least, 4 unique and individually extremely competent voices.
Doctors2Advocate and to add on to that, this is a song written and composed by them. I do love this performance but PTX can't be disregarded so easily.
Ptx uses pitch modifier there still great but all artist use it cause we’re all imperfect, so of course the ptx bass part sounds very stronger, Avi is truly amazing l, but to add that bass that is heavily felt there is something added, everyone is coming at the soprano, yet In all other Cover the soprano is too much, she could of been more out, but was better then most, but besides her volume she went flat near the end, and made everyone else go flat so there that
Call me a huge critic I guess. I think they blend well together, however their tenor is too overpowering, imo, I think a much more clear toned tenor who's falsetto comes more naturally would sound a lot nicer with the group. It honestly sounds like he has the grasp onto his balls just to get to those notes. (I'm a Bass/Baritone/Tenor 2 so I know what it's like hitting those notes and what it sounds like when you have to reach like that.) The girl looks and sings lost, she probably was nervous though, I use to be the same. But nowhere near Pentatonix. I only heard the girls voice before "I will break down the gates of Heaven." And so forth. When PTX sang that verse ^ up until that final harmonizing note of "Set me free." Is when I got absolute chills. With these guys, I didn't get it. Which really disappointed me... critique over.
You sang very well, but not better than Pentatonix but you have very much potential to be like them but Pentatonix will always be the best A cappella group l! LOVE YOU PENTATONIX! PENTAHOLIC FOR EVER&!!
This is probably one of the best versions of this song. I hope Pentatonix have seen this because they would be pretty proud.
god that bass is so strong
sometimes they use octaver
@@flaviocandido8866 why do u think so? even i can hit the lowest not from this song, hardly of course but it`s possible
That guy is an INCREDIBLE bass. Seriously had me going WTF on the "kles" of "shackles"...so LOW! Would put him against Avi and Tim Foust both. Great friggin' job, guys.
Eyyy! The man himself liked my comment. Seriously, though, dude - What did you do on the "kles" of "shackles"? Is it chest? Growl?
Purely my opinion and I couldn't say for sure whether or not this is actually true or not but it sounds like an octaver or similar effect is applied to the bass' microphone. Someone with better knowledge can feel free to correct but that's my two cents as a musician.

Think it's his true voice, but low notes can just be so tricky to the ear that we have no idea, lmao
i literally felt like Avi's voice was there in the song.
If only i could improve my bass like this -_-
I'm four years late, but, I didn't notice that low note. wtf?
I need the singer's explanation, something must be playing with our brain, cause there is no way he got that low that easily, help me
Wow actually the best cover I have seen, everyone is really hitting their notes smoothly and harmonising so well. I do agree that the girl should have been more pronounced but apart from that, pretty fantastic!
this bass is Godlike. And i like the rest of it. good job guys.
Goosebumps every single time
My goodness. Every once and awhile I think to myself: "I want to listen to some skin-crawling good music" and none other than the Melodores pop into my head. Seriously this rendition NEVER gets old to me. Absolutely incredible and seriously makes me wish I would have stuck with choir throughout highschool and college. Melodores doing PTX material? More please!
goose bumps down to my toes... and I have the pentatonix cd...
Being a PTX fan, I can truly say that you guys did an amazing job!
This is really good, don't get me wrong. But I wish the girl would bring her part out more.
I think she is. Remember this is a PTX original, and Kristen's part was written for her, and she is a mezzo soprano. still here in 2020
This is incredible! Run to you is my favorite song by Pentatonix and you guys covered it perfectly!
Congrats on your win on the Sing Off! :)
Thanks
Serious full body chills. Oh my goodness.
Also...the girl...oh my GOSH, she is good. Wow. (And yes, the guy in the middle [who does Latch] is excellent, too.) So is the guy on the end. And everyone blends so well...and yeah, this is just amazing. Nice job, y'all.
Nathan, man, you nailed that.
4 years later and im still listening to it!!!!!!!!!!
Nathan Hall, y'all...
Wow, brilliant ❤
they blend so well! ugh I'm in love with the Melodores.
My heart.
Absolutely beautiful 😊❤
Excellent, especially with those moments of dissonance, I think that truly makes the song before the brief resolution each time.
I love PTX and I'm usually very critical and this was amazing!!!! Holy crap!
Was taken aback by this perfect cover
So is this quintet gonna hit the road for a tour? Fantastic.
I guess it's natural to compare voices and pick favorites--Me? I'll just enjoy the great music and sounds from whomever, and where ever!
Little late to the show but the bass is so rich in sound and the baritone really fits well with the bass
I love this song by PTX!! You guys did an AMAZING job with it x

amazing job

very nice
Right? I kept finding myself craving those high notes.
That's amazing... O_O

oh my goodness
Привет из России! Вы молодцы, спасибо!

A vocoder or something? I love it. Am interested to employ what you used.
While this is marvelous.. stunning, really... I have to wonder: Is there an additional -1 octave on some of the lowest bass notes throughout the tune? As though someone with a keyboard or synth were adding additional bottom to the line? Does anyone else hear that?
hagfelsh I think there was an added -1 octave at times...I heard it too
AUGIE AUGIE AUGIE
PTX definitely had a better blend and better phrasing and dynamic levels, but this still sounds good!
Is that Grant Gustin 2 from right of audience?
Y'all should do Nina Simone's feeling good
The blend is pretty great although , the only thing wrong I found with this cover is that they can't seem to agree on rhythm either they'll come in half a beat early or half a beat late
It was kind of frustrating but it got better at the end
Wow there used to be girls in melodores?
this was actually godlike.. on par with ptx if not............
I’m so confused who’s doing bass
Just blooming it’s the guy beside the soprano
hate to say it but you guys blend better than PTX, and seem to have timing down, and individual skill better than PTX... much love to both :D oh and the guy in the middle has a voice of pure sex. Holy shit latch i literally have showed that to so many people
"Individual skill better than PTX" is a huuuge leap. I don't see anyone here who can vocally challenge Mitch Grassi.
Sorry +Jack Munoz but no one is better than Pentatonix!!!!!
Doctors2Advocate Maybe the alto(blonde in the center)
Keith Mattix Don't get me wrong, this is one of the best blending acapella groups I've heard that is not Pentatonix. (or Rajaton or Real Group, etc.) But PTX not only blend decently well but are, at the very least, 4 unique and individually extremely competent voices.

The word “run” at 4:06 is what scares over the ending but besides that it was really cool

This is perhaps heretical, but I like this version better than the original.
Why?
+Tommy Cross i really like both of them, but this one sounds better live.
You sang very well, but not better than Pentatonix but you have very much potential to be like them but Pentatonix will always be the best A cappella group l! LOVE YOU PENTATONIX! PENTAHOLIC FOR EVER&!!
