    That high note on "set me freeeeee" - I believe that is Kevin. He often does the highest harmony part. Same thing with Water and Imagine. He has a beautiful, clear falsetto. Many of their most choral pieces were written and arranged, at least in part, by Avi, including this one. I also love the dissonance they move in and out of so beautifully. The very last chord sounds to me like the song is ending on a question. I've heard others try and cover this, and it's never as pure.

    This is one of my favorite pieces of theirs. The dissonance, Avi’s beautiful, breathtaking baseline, the way that they each other, the few moments when Mitch’s harmony and diction just radiate through, the way the whole song is a breath -a sigh that just expands and grows- and then starts collapsing with a capitulation of the chorus, and then ends with that brilliant release while they hum the last few bars. I completely agree. Avi was the star and Kirstie was the one adding the most special 'effects' in my opinion. And yet, for me, it sounded like a duet between Avi and _Mitch_ most of the time. The others made it sound perfectly, but you didn't really noticed them individually that much. I heared Avi's and Mitch's voice all the time and it was so beautiful. :-)

    pls find the recording of them doing this live, off mic, in Germany ages ago. They did it heaps as a treat, it seems, but this recording is a good one. Also, Light in the Hallway off mic live - Avi's farewell tour. Both show off their lovely composition skills: Run to you is mostly Kevin and Avi; Light in the hallway was Scott's idea, for his nephew.

    I screamed when I saw that you reacted to this! This has been my favorite Pentatonix song since I first discovered them all those years ago. They’ve made incredible music since then, but this song will forever be my favorite and holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for providing your commentary on it!!
    Also, Can’t Help Falling in Love (PTX as well) is a great song that showcases how they’ve grown with a similar style song. It was also one of Avi’s last songs with the group!

  • @skentmar105

    I've liked Pentatonix for a long, long time. I like the current configuration a lot, but the configuration in this video is one that I will always think of when I hear the word "Pentatonix". This isn't to take anything away from the current membership of the group, but I really love the … flavor (?)… of Avi's bass as it combines with the other four. Hearing KO sing instead of doing his great percussion completes the melodic balance in this song. Thanks for the reaction to this song.

    This is my favorite PTX song ever. Avi wrote this song so he deserves to shine. I love the pure vocal harmonies in this song. I hope you react to some more of Avi's solo music. It Knows me and I'll Get By are very good. Chains and Full Moon are kind of opposites of each other.

    Avi is the star of every song, honestly. And it's not to take away from the other singers, they are all fantastic, obviously, but there's just something about what a rich, fulsome bass adds to any song. It captures your attention, it attunes your hearing to a whole different level, and activates something in you that one can't really describe.
    A good bass will shake you to the core of your soul. And Avi is top tier. Pentatonix hasn't been the same since he left.

  • @kilppa
    @kilppa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've several times started thinking that yeah, Avi is the star, but so is Mitch, and then you have Kevin too. There is so much talent in this group that you can almost forget that Kirstin and Scott are amazing performers. Jam packed with crazy talent is what this band is.

    If you enjoy the harmonies in this Pentatonix video, I highly recommend reacting to Jacob Collier's a capella arrangement of "Moon River." He won a Grammy for the arrangement, and I think you would enjoy the intricacy of it. I would also enjoy seeing you react to the live recording of Jacob Collier and Daniel Caesar performing "Best Part" in Toronto. Both videos can be found on Collier's personal TH-cam channel.

    Throughout my years in band, director after director would beg the low brass to play louder. It not only adds that velvety texture, but because it is the bass (base, haha) upon which the mid and high brass sit - their sound is otherwise either lost or incredibly bright. I completely agree that Avi was the star!
    Can we get a reaction video to Sia singing live on SNL? There is so much to say and discuss about her sound and technique!

    I love your reactions and assessments. I think you really have the best comments because you actually give us musical notations from an actual singing coach perspective. You use terminology in the REAL Music world and you give it with a reliable authority which clearly you KNOW what you are talking about. I think you are the best critic in music on the internet. Keep up the good work. Now let me say, I agree that Avi is the secure foundation of this song and he does have the best Velvety Chocolaty Rich voice. I LOVE a great Bass voice. I could listen to it 24/7 whether talking or singing and I would be like a melted giddy school girl. Love your work. Thank You.
