Nothing beats the black and white version of Link's Awakening (in my opinion). Magical. The land was constructed by your imagination, while being outlined by Nintendo.
The Gameboy version of Dr. Mario is great. When you get a chain reaction and it played the different tones was unique to this version and was such a motivator to do well. I never cared about points, I always wanted to set it up so it would do the jingles when I did well.
I still hold that Link's Awakening is the best LoZ game. Certainly not the biggest or most influential, but in terms of setting and story, it's special in a way that the other games are not
I agree - it's my favourite memory of gaming when I was a child. Perhaps I would feel the same about other Zelda games if I had played them in the same era, but I never played the SNES and N64 games until years later.
Ive only dabbled on original GB games recently on an emulation handheld, and i was surprised with how much fun i was having with Kid Dracula and Wario Land.
Can't argue with the top choice, Links Awakening might be the best game on any system ever. Mario Land 1 should easily be top 10. I also really enjoyed Dr. Franken and Alfred Chicken on the Game Boy, both original quirky platform adventures.
Final Fantasy Legend is great, but it should not force Final Fantasy Legend II out of a top slot, and I would argue Final Fantasy Adventure also merits a place on this list. If only choosing one from Square, it should be FFL2.
Agree on both points. Final Fantasy Legend II is easily the best traditional turn based RPG on Game Boy. And Final Fantasy Adventure really pushed the Game Boy's limits with how big the adventure was. For its time, it also has what might have been the best story of any Game Boy game up to that point.
I would put Pokémon at the top. The massive sales figures don't lie. The monster catching mechanic made it so much more addictive than ordinary turn based RPGs. Though I personally personally like Link's Awakening better, and it has aged better. Tetris is great, but doesn't deserve the second spot in my opinion.
@@tomdekler9280 I think Tetris was bundled with the Game Boy at some point, which would make the sold copies an unreliable measure. I agree Wario Land II is also a great game. Actually, it is in a sense similar to Pokémon. While Pokémon puts a whole different layer on top of the traditional RPG formula, Wario Land II puts a different layer on top of the traditional platformer formula (as exhibited by traditional games like Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country). You are not only defeating enemies and walking to the level exit, no, you are also doing things like manipulating the level layout, or altering the story progression.
Anyone else triggered that we didn’t get to see a “Tetris” (4 lines) even though there was so much opportunity to? 😂 now I have to fire up the old game boy just get rid of my blue balls 😂
I like The Final Fantasy Legend and love the Saga series but IMO II and III are both better then the original so if only one was going on the list is should have been one of them. Also if you want to play the games you can buy a collection of all three on the Switch Eshop
Don't get me wrong, I love Battle of the Holy as much as anyone else, but having it looped poorly throughout the video was a bit distracting. Aside from that, some really solid picks on this list.
Can't wait for the GBC video, I think that a good sub-series of videos could be the best custom experiences (Ram hacks /QoL Patches/ Translations) for each console, updated yearly. If you need some help with that I have very extensive curated ROM hack list. Good luck on the channel!
Awesome list. It's a bit of a rare opinion, but I also think Final Fantasy Legend is the better game out of the original SaGa series. It's much shorter, more minimal, and actually has more options for party customization owing to the fact that you can actually choose how many members are in your party. The other games may be more polished in the traditional sense, but I find Final Fantasy Legend is more fun to return to for repeat playthroughs.

totally agree. the gameplay in the original was far superior. Mario Land 2 sacrificed gameplay for graphics. The levels were boring with one slow enemy at a time for most levels.
Weird that the only “black cartridge” game on here is G&W Gallery 2. Would think at least Pokemon Gold/Silver or TCG would make the cut (yes, completely playable on the OG gameboy!)
That was a pretty good selection. However, I am disappointed that my favourite Mega Man game from the Game Boy series, Mega Man IV, was not included in this list. It definitely deserves it. Also, I think the same could be said about the original Wario Land. By the way, I didn't even know that there is a third Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for Game Boy. I am definitely going to try it at some point.

Bionic Commando on Game Boy both has better gameplay and better graphics than the NES version! So much for 8-bit... no wonder the Game Boy crushed its color competitors, the game content was just better, graphics as well... look at the Mega Man series, the Donkey Kong games, but I like commando, gargoyles glass... There are so many games with stunning graphics on the OG gameboy, Thank God now we have emulators, and we actually get to see those son in graphics for what they were intended to be...
Having played all the Final Fantasy Legend games, the best one is 2. And the 3rd one is still better than the first. In 2 there is a large connected multiverse to explore through a connected world tree, and 3 has a fun time travel element to it. 1 is just bland, I barely remember anything about it's story.
I remember playing darkwing duck but it was the german version. I spoke neither english nor german when I was 7 yet I loved the game regardless. I never manages to finish it, I always died at that stupid clown in the sewers. I still remember that vividly
Good list, for me, Operation C, Super Mario Land, TMNT Fall of the Foot Clan would have been there. Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle is a guilty pleasure and I would have also cheated and added Ducktales 2 along with Ducktales 1

I´m 38 y/o, so GB was the console I had and still have, but I play it now on the Miyoo Mini. Still love the black and white. :)
