I live way up north in Vermont our growing season is short. Just noticed my first bloom on my tomatoes today. Be several more weeks for me. Can’t wait. I stated them from seed.

We had the first yellow crookneck squash from our garden last night for supper. My husband sliced it and shook it up with cornmeal and laid it out on a pan and sprayed coconut on top then baked it. It just melted in our mouths like butter. Nothing better than that first bite of goodness. The Lord bless and keep you all .😋💗💗

I know exactly how Matt feels. I can live off of tomato sandwiches until the garden tomatoes give out. I'm like Matt. I like plenty of black pepper but I only buy Dukes mayonnaise. I only put tomatoes, mayonnaise, salt and pepper on mine. Happy Independence Day to you all!

Mayonnaise is getting so expensive and a lot of it has bioengineered products in it now. Walmart mayonnaise is still $3.18 here, the other brands are all $5.00 or close to it. Read your labels for bioiengineered products.

My goodness I love me a mater sandwich! All of mine are still green. I lost patience and ended up making some fried green tomatoes just to hold me over. Also I appreciate Matt drinking the milk with it. I’ve always done that too and folks thought something was wrong with me. Thanks to him I’m not alone.

One of life's greatest pleasures for a person who gardens is enjoying their first cherokee purple tomato (or whatever variety they love) sliced up with mayo, salt and pepper on light bread. Keep savoring those 'mater sammiches Matt! I can eat them like crazy too, ever since I was a little girl. Back then I'd get my salt shaker and eat home grown tomatoes like apples for a snack, sprinkling a little bit of salt on each bite. I'd eat them until the acid broke my face out!

Good stuff! Sometimes, I’ll take a slice of cheese and put on bread and top with a tomato and fresh herbs and broil it, open faced. Makes a good snack.

I love a good tomato sandwich! And I use Hellmann's, tried Dukes but it doesnt taste right. My tomatoes are still a long way off this year 😢

Though I'm a California native, my mom was born and raised in North Carolina. She would make tomato sandwiches with mayo, salt and pepper. They were divine! Especially with homegrown tomatoes! Thank you and Happy 4th of July! 💗

I grew up eating Miracle Whip on our sandwiches. My parents always grew lots of tomatoes even when they stopped planting a garden.
Today I like Hellmans or Dukes Mayo. Dukes is newer to this area. We live in Glenpool which is part of the Tulsa metro area in Oklahoma.

Oh ya...now I need to go to my sisters home to pick a tomato! Matt, your sandwich looks delicious. I used to have a lovely, big vegetable and flower garden but since I move from that property I now depend on my sister for these wonderful tastes. She grows a lot, enough for everyone. We all take part in the care of the garden. Just yesterday I was visiting them and I came home with a bag full of lettuce. I had to make a lettuce and tomato sandwich of course...white bread, fresh tomato, fresh lettuce, miracle whip, butter, and salt...no pepper for me thank you very much lol! The best beverage to drink with a tomato sandwich is of course a big, tall glass of cold milk. Tipper, I had to laugh when you asked Matt if you should keep talking and put off him taking the first bite of his sandwich! He seriously answered, "no". Anyhow, thanks for sharing this. Blessings x

With raising chickens we have taken to making our own mayo. I know it doesnt keep as long as store bought, but its richer and more flavorful.

I'm a Tarheel living in Michigan. I grew up in Newton, and my parents grew up in Rutherford County, so I've spent lots of time in western NC. We always called it "loaf" bread. I like it fresh and soft - especially for pimento cheese sandwiches and banana sandwiches. I'm like Matt - LOVE fresh tomato sandwiches - I rarely eat them any different from Matt except I do like to toast my bread. There's nothing like the flavor of tomatoes mixed with mayonnaise! I've been watching your channel for a few months and enjoy it tremendously!

Last year our grandson, 2 at the time, discovered ripe tomatoes in the garden. He ate until he had a rash, burning mouth and backside lol. His mama said he's not getting as many this year!
My husband liked a good mayo and, tomato sandwich with a few slices of cheddar cheese in his plate. He said that was a full meal. He’s in heaven now and you know he’s still having his sandwich. I love ‘em too. Really enjoy your family and appreciate your knowledge. Patsy
I love tomato sandwiches with Dukes mayo, the best of summer sandwiches. I so remember my grandmother asking for light bread when we visited her in East Tennessee.
My beloved Daddy and Momma both passed away in 2008 5 weeks apart. Married 63 years. I lost both my siblings also. My brother was 61 and died of lung/brain cancer in 2013. My sister was 57 and died of breast cancer in 2016. But every summer when I eat a homegrown tomato sandwich I can feel their presence. We ate them EVERY single day in the summer growing up and into adulthood. But growing up in Pittsboro, NC...down in Chatham County, we always used Dukes !! That's all Momma ever bought !! ❤❤

My ex-wife's grandmother was from Mississippi and I had never had a tomato sandwich until I met her. It just wasn't a thing in East Texas where I grew up. The first time she made me one I was hooked. I love them! My great grandfather came to Texas in the early 1900's from Georgia and brought a lot of the deep south traditional things with him. That's the reason I love watching you and your girls so much. It reminds me of days gone by

Grew up on tomato 🥪 and cucumber 🥒 🥪 yum. As a foster child now at 60. We lived off the land. Such a nice upbringing. I walk around looking at my small veg plants, it's like a watched pot that never boils. Your garden looks so amazing. Everything it's so wet still from all the rain. Stay out of the heat. Hi Tipper & Matt ! I don't think I mentioned this but I grew up on a dairy farm in Vermont, every summer during the haying time my mom would have a cucumber sandwich. I think he made it like Matt just did with a tomato. The cucumbers came fresh from the garden. On a hot day he loved it. We had a neighbor who was from Canada ( French only speaking) just like my dads parents he ate almost ever day a tomato on toast. Watching this reminded me of that thanks 😊 They are both gone now so now it's just the memories 😊 I used to love tomatoes but when I got really severely sick I got acid reflux real bad. I no longer am able to eat both tomatoes & oranges. I miss them but I still eat pizza but I eat white pizza. Love u all & GOD BLESS YOU 😊

Back in the day, 1970 and such one of my many chores was to weed the garden. My favorite was the Tomato patch. I always took the salt shaker with me, had myself a tomato treat or two while working. Nothing more refreshing than a big ole Tomato sandwich in the Summertime. 😉
I love fresh tomatoes from the garden. I can remember as a kid working in the gardens on Saturdays and for lunch we would eat tomatoes like apples. And green onions and cucumbers, radishes. Loved every minute.

Oh, and the mayonnaise thing is crazy, I live on the Florida/Alabama state line and it’s a big contentious subject here as well. Lots of people go crazy about Dukes, but I agree with Matt. Mayonnaise is mayonnaise, and I love a whole lotta salt and pepper on my mater sandwiches too!

I'm so glad Matt enjoyed his sammich. I have to agree - in the last 2 years, I've completely stopped eating grocery store tomatoes. After everything they go through just to get to the store, they taste like nothing! Nothing better than a sun-ripened tomato fresh off the vine, all warm from the sun! As always, your thumbnails crack me up! Matt's face!
That's exactly how I love it too! This is the 2nd year I have had the joy of watching Matt eat his tomato sandwich.
I had my first tomato sandwich yesterday. I don't have a garden but my good neighbor does. She brought this gorgeous, huge tomato to me and said it was for a sandwich. White bread, Dukes mayo, salt and course ground black pepper. I drank ice tea with mine. I had to eat it standing over the kitchen sink because the tomato was so juicy--even thought I had let the slices hang out on a paper towel for about five minutes to absorb some of the moisture. Pure delicious delight in my mouth!
Those little orange colored tomatoes are sooo good. My son grows them and other kinds like mortgage lifters, so good!

I'm with Katie on the tomato thing. I will eat BLTs, as long as the tomato isn't to thick or squishy. But not thrilled about tomatoes. I use a lot of black pepper on everything. Here I still am, decades removed from my pediatric visits, and next time i have a mater sammich I'm going to wash it down with a glass of cold, whole milk! "If it hurts me, it just does" Matt is incredible!
