No trails, but when I drive by where my grandmother had a farm, I always slow down and look for her....We used to bring fruit and vegetables up to the road stand and sell. I loved her, I loved the farm. It was my happy place. It was purchased by a sportsmans club and is now all overgrown. I still drive slowly by and look. Just in case. Sometimes I think that if I see her, it will be my time to go...and follow her into the afterlife.

We dipped below freezing here in SE Iowa last night. Woke up to zinnia zombies :). Poor things' leaves were all droopy and the blooms were faded. I need to get out there today and pull them up.
What you said, Tipper, about the hickory leaves against the blue sky reminded me of one morning back when I still lived in Ohio. I pulled into the parking lot at work and was facing west where there was a huge bank of dark grey clouds behind some kind of yellow-leafed tree. With the sun behind me shining on them, they were just about glowing so yellow against the grey clouds that I actually gasped and stopped the car and just stared for a couple minutes. it was truly a magical sight to behold!

Here in Oklahoma we're expecting a hard freeze tonight- 10-29. It has been raining, cold rain and I'm hoping it doesn't freeze and be slick, lose electricity, etc.. I went hunting with my daddy from the time I was about 7, until he died at 74 years old, 28 years ago today. This video brought back a lot of dear memories of those times in the woods together. He taught me about the animals, how they acted, etc. He taught me how to be quiet in the woods and read signs so we could find the animals. Thanks for sharing your stories, memories you'll hold dear all of your life. Enjoyed the visit, stay safe and GOD bless

Your mentioning the days when people walked made me recall my childhood days when my mother , sister and I would walk to town . Sometimes it was just to go "window shopping " for nothing in particular . The sidewalks would be full of people because those were the days before shopping centers and all the stores were '" downtown ". My favorites were the two "ten cent stores " and two hardware stores . There was also Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Ward. This was in the early to mid 50's and down town started to fade away as shopping centers became more common . Walking to town faded with it except in my memory .

Tipper, so gracious of you to give a nod to a TH-camr you enjoy. Here's one Matt might enjoy: Brownville's Food Pantry for Deer. They support the wild deer population in their area of Maine by supplying acorns, oats and apples in feeders during the winter. The deer yard on their property and the McMahon family have cameras on the feed troughs which go live on Dec. 16th this year. It's so lovely and peaceful to watch those beautiful deer come in to feed during the winter months. I was thinking y'all might enjoy the tranquil beauty of their videos.

Here were I am about 32. Those marigolds are really pretty, they really brighten up your day, you could bring some of your last flowers inside to enjoy, that’s what I would do. 🌼🌸 I’ve bought pretty leaves inside, but they dry up pretty fast. 🍂

I sit here and watch/listen to you guys while I work at my desk and yearn to get outside. I did get to walk trails this weekend at the county park my daughter in law is in charge of but it wasn't enough. I grew up with a single mom in a small town and didnt have a car most of the time but we never had to walk very far for anything. My childhood was way more simple than my peers. And as much as I resented it then, I sure miss it now.
Funny quotes: "Seems to me that these days you can't play marbles without having to buy a uniform.". -Ward Cleaver.
"These times are too progressive. Everything has changed too fast. Railroads and telegraph and kerosene and coal stoves--they're good things to have but the trouble is, folks get to depend on 'em." --Charles Ingalls (The Long Winter, LEIW)

The rest of the peppers I picked what was left, and stripped all the leaves and tender stems off for the composter. The garden is finally about done for this year. We live on opposite ends of the Appalachian chain, Tipper. I remember feeling envious of the jump start you get on your garden in the Spring. We plant more than a month after you do. But come Fall, we are ahead of you. Our leaves are gone. Though it didn't accumulate, we had snow flurries all day today. The high temperature was in the mid-30s. In the last week, I mulched a few pick-up loads of leaves and spread them in the garden. Then I covered them with a few inches of composted cow manure and tilled it in. Amending our soil in the Fall is a strategy we use to plant as early as possible the following year. I suppose that's our way of adapting to a compressed growing season.
    Have a wonderful week!

I live in northwest Georgia and I think here where I live is the Deer Capital. This past summer I saw more deer than I have seen in my whole 60 years of life, and I have seen a lot over the years. I think it is because nobody hunts around here anymore. My husband use to be a hunter and we always had deer meat in our freezer, but his health keeps him from hunting like he use to.

One of my favorites, Tipper. Loved hearing you and Matt talk about old times. I'm really enjoying the drone shots, too. Especially with the gorgeous leaf color they're picking up. We've got a freeze watch for Tuesday night in North Ga, and I'm not looking forward to the sudden plunge into cold.temps.
Continuing to keep Granny and the rest of you in my prayers.

Here in northern Kentucky on our 165 acres, there are so many deer. I have killed 2 or 3 over the years from our porch. I have hunted with my husband for 15 years now. I am the butcher in the family myself. Wish you all the luck with more deer.

Matt I agree that painting is not so fun! It’s the prep I especially dislike. Or when you step in the paint by accident! I painted every room when we moved into this old house except the kitchen. I keep saying I’ll get to it but honestly I am not excited about it! You sure live in a beautiful place. On the news we heard you were getting frost so maybe your next video we’ll hear about it. Take care.

Nice you've amended your garden beds to such a lovely state. We have clay here in the Willamette Valley, not red. I loved the Little House on the Prairie books as a young girl. Read them all several times. I even bought a complete set for myself as an adult. The very first book starts off with pa shot a deer.

Nothing like a stretch of warm days before the cold finally settle in. We here in Central Mass. Enjoyed 4 sunny 70+ days. Today it's in the 40's and rainy. Sorry to hear you need rain. I'll send you summer... we had the soggiest summer. I could grow rice in parts of yard. Lost all the potatoes due to rot. Tomatoes lousy as well. Like you, beans were the crop of the summer. Last summer was dry as a bone; the summer before soggy as well. Hopefully we will all be blessed with a perfect growing season next year.

🍂 Fall is my favorite Season, and I'm not looking forward to such a drastic change in temperatures. As you get older I believe you will continue to look back more now than in the earlier years remembering great stories... I laughed so hard when Matt's Daddy was asked how did the skunk 🦨 get the cans open. So glad to hear Rachel is doing well and continues to keep fit. Folks like Rachel, the Flowers family and others are far and few around here now. I've never heard folklore about catching a leaf, but I'm definitely going to tell my grandchildren. I miss seeing Granny on the videos but she needs her rest to get well. The LORD hears our prayers. I'm looking forward to your next video. Have a wonderful week and stay warm. Blessed! 🤗🙏💕

I always enjoy dropping by to see what you and Matt are doing around y’all’s homestead. My mom always had us plow the garden several times during the cold weather. Like Matt said as long as the grounds not frozen it can be tilled. It really does seem to kill out any bug larvas that’s hiding. When my husband plowed up mine garden several times during cold weather my garden had the best produce to harvest. The years he only tilled it once it just seemed I was fighting all kinds of bugs, voles and moles. So I’m a firm believer in tilling up as much as you can during cold weather.

Your story about your girls not liking having to pick the rocks out of the garden reminds me of when my 2 girls were small. We lived on a farm and I had a 3/4 acre kitchen garden. The first year we put it out I was working and the only time I could get in the garden to do real work was on the weekends. My 2 girls were 6 and 7 years old and would rather take a beating than to picking out rock. For some reason my husband and I had to go down to the Saturday flea market. While there I ran across a man selling Indian arrow heads and an idea hit me. I asked him how much he wanted and he told me a quarter each and asked me how many I wanted. I told him that the price was too high for the amount I would need. When I told him why I needed so many he got a big laugh out of my plan and told me to scoop up a hand full for a dollar. The next weekend, as usual my girls grumbled about going to the garden so I just left them in the house. About 5 minutes later I can running through the door yelling, "Lookie what I found!" and they ran to see. There in my hand with a little dirt was a big Indian arrow head. Their eyes got as big a saucers! I told them to just stay inside and watch cartoons and I was going back to see if I could find some buried Indian treasure. "Treasure" they asked. I told them, "Sure, where there's Indian arrow heads there's always a chance of finding Indian treasure." That's all it took. They about run me over trying to get to the garden to find the 'Treasure' before I could. I scattered those Indian arrows all over the garden under rocks. By the end of the day you couldn't find a rock for love nor money and each girl had several arrow heads in their pockets but sadly no treasure.
