I started watching cycling and the Tour when I was a kid in 2008. Having seen the highs and lows of this man's career, I had an ear-to-ear grin seeing him put his hands in the air today. It has been an absolute privilege to watch this sprint and his career
Similar here, think it was 2010 when I saw him win on the Champs-Elysees when I was 9 and really vividly remember I was just so stunned at his speed, like he'd been fired out of a rocket and everyone else was standing still. Just in awe of his achievements, the rest of the HTC and Sky highs, the lows after the yellow jersey year and the resurgence that even I'd given up on, just incredible
Not only did he prove us wrong once again, but this was arguably one of his best wins. Perfectly navigated the field after losing his lead out, perfectly timed kick, and no one could come close. What a win!
Yeah I went back and watched that sprint a couple of times, couple hundred metres to go he was boxed in and I was like how the...? Masterful navigation of that sprint pack, just found the gap and shot out the front just in time.
Won't forget interailing in France in 2008. Won't forget this. The way he surfed through the wheels like he was conducting an opera in front of him was magical and instructive of his instinct. The marginal gain metrics are yet to bottle that. I'm 39 and pulled a muscle putting my socks on yesterday. Chapeau.
So happy for Cav, he was already the goat sprinter, but locking in that record was special. Gotta love the Astana team for backing him and getting him the opportunity,
Pretty cool that Cav breaks the record with a sprint that clearly shows the experience and strategy of his discipline, and not just a perfect leadout, a reduced field, or some mistake from his opponents. Glad he got to do it in style. Curious to see if he gets another this tour. If Jasper continues to look this unremarkable, and Pederson is truly banged up, then he may yet win a few.
An absolute legend of the sport. The greatest sprinter of all time. This was already true but this win 16 years after his first underlines just how good he is.
No one is talking about how crazy Victor Campernaerts is riding without glasses all the time. His eyes must be so red and dry from all that wind, bonkers mate just bonkers
Dude is a real freak of nature. Not to mention that he is constantly pacing everyday, and often in breakaways, or doing giant rides in a solo breakaway.
A great finish from the Manx Missile. He's not as punchy as he used to be but he's got the tactical head on him and a team to guide him to those results, like the HTC days.
Thanks for showing the complete overhead view! We never saw it on TV, so it was difficult to understand how Cav ended up the other side of the road after being boxed in on the right side. Clear win, great performance for a 39 yo sprinter!!
@@great_live_music He should not have been allowed to keep it. He changed lane after launching his sprint, this led to all the other sprinters changing lanes and ultimately led to the crash of Pedersen. The exact rule of sprinting is worded as follows:"Riders shall be strictly forbidden to deviate from the lane they selected when launching into the sprint and, in so doing, endangering others." Did Cav change lane after launching, definitely! Did it endanger others? Pedersen crashing would not have happened if the others kept to their lanes. Thus it is easy to argue that the lane changing did endanger others.
@JeppeAchtonNielsen You missed the part where he looks over his shoulder, finds the clear air, and moves across without actually pinning anyone to the barrier? The move didn't impede any other riders sprint, Pedersens crash was a result of going for a gap that was closing naturally as the bunch straightened up out of the corner
@@eddypawson doesn't matter. The rule say that he is "strictly" forbidden from changing lane. Therefore he is not allowed to change lane, even if he thinks it is safe!
@@JeppeAchtonNielsen Hard disagree, the video evidence shows Cav moved into an empty lane and didn't cut off anyone else. At 7:30 you can clearly see the huge open space around Cav. Philipsen is the one who swerves across the road and cuts off several other riders. The rider in red behind Philipsen at 7:31 doesn't move at all despite Philipsen jumping in front of him, so clearly his lane is unaffected. It's the rider in red and yellow behind that guy who cuts hard left into the barriers that causes the chain reaction sending Pedersen into the barriers at 7:32. Pedersen's crash had nothing to do with Cav or even Philipsen, and Philipsen's maneuver was far more dangerous to the other riders. The fact that nobody threw their hands up in protest further proves the point.
I'm so freaking excited for this. I was watching Cav back in 2010 when I was first getting into cycling, and watching his ride these ~15 years has brought me so much joy. So happy for him.
I never had any doubts about Mark. He is THE GOAT of sprinters, and that record will stand forever unless Pog tries to break the record! And I loved seeing him beating Jasper Philipsen to get number 36. It was like a highlight wheel of Cav: surfing the wheels, knowing what wheel to sit on and then the power, which he holds off phillipsen showing his power. Providing he stays safe, I can see another win or two this tour
While everyone knows he is fast, maybe not as fast as previous years, but still fast, Cav won today with skill. He was able to watch the race unfold before him and pick his wheel and his opportunity. Mountains of respect for him. A racer with class winning with class. Cementing his place as the GOAT.
Cyclists are going to be studying how Cavendish negotiated his way to the front on that stage for years. Thing of absolute beauty the last 1km; zero fear or doubt. So happy for Cav. The commentators and studio here in Britain were absolutely elated.
Great analysis. Clearly the team keeping Cavs powder dry to the very end mattered big time. When riding at threshold in a sprint and you have to move up you burn your matches quickly. Cav also did all the right choices to get an open line. Big congrats to him.

Chapeau to Astana. Never been my favourite team (for obvious reasons) but they have faith, foresight and courage in spades to take on the Cav crusade. The team won it in the last 30 km, leaving Cav to do what he does best in the melee.
Yes, this happens often with sprinters. When they stop pedaling the inertia of the cassette/hub will keep the chain rotating and will throw the chain off.

Remember his first Vuelta when at only 19 he was tearing the peloton apart just for fun? Pog is a legend!
You have always backed Cav, thank you buddy.
I always look forward to your analysis and insight as it is always far better than the rest of the crowd.
Just brilliant. No more words!
I thought and knew Cav could do it...... i was more worried he wasnt going to ride this year..... im glad he can feel some relief now he has done it
Chapeau to Astana. Never been my favourite team (for obvious reasons) but they have faith, foresight and courage in spades to take on the Cav crusade. The team won it in the last 30 km, leaving Cav to do what he does best in the melee.
So pleased for cav. Finally got it. Well deserved after all his problems.
No mention of that bunny hop?
Well done everyone for surviving that crazy stage. Sir Mark champ.
I'm 39, i say this on behalf of all the 39 year olds around the world 🌎
Go Cavo 39 Years Young, Winning the 5th Stage, Incredible Achievement 🖖
This man is a Legend, years ago he was sprinting against Erik Zabel, now even Rick Zabel (Eriks Son) has retired but Cav is stil sprinting ❤
the observations of all the subtle body language is crazy. like jasper shaking his head. who else would have seen that?!
Really great as ever thank you
Why is no one talking about the bunny hop over Pederson by the Lotto rider??
That was an incredible performance from cavendish and astana all around! (Also nice commentary, do more of the witty banter pls)
did cav drop his chain after the finish? I cannot see it clearly on TV.
Yes, this happens often with sprinters. When they stop pedaling the inertia of the cassette/hub will keep the chain rotating and will throw the chain off.
F yeah!!! Way to go, Cav!
I now know why I subscribed to you years ago, excellent analysis 👏
121 ARNAUD DE LIE was probably the cause of Mads crash as he made the left move, forcing the guy behind to move as well not to overlap, and that put Mads in the barrier.
