Dairy Propaganda For Children (Donkey Hodie “Cheesy Con” Episode)

- Today we’re discussing the “Cheesy Con” episode of the PBS children’s show Donkey Hodie, which is aimed at children ages 3-5. This episode makes a gratuitous amount of cheese references with little to no educational value. While this could be a coincidence or just a reflection of our cheese-obsessed society, I think it's irresponsible for children's programming to glorify cheese in this way. Let's discuss.

Aside from appealing to children, I can't help but think about the intended appeal to adults--the household purchasers who are most likely watching these shows with their kids 🤔

Bad cheese message aside, “Donkey Hodie’ is pretty adorable. (As a name, I mean; I’ve never heard of or seen this show). I hope they have at least one windmill-centered episode!
It's definitely charming (aside from the endless eye rolls this episode brought) and I can see why kids like it!
Awesome! I didn't know anything about Donkey Hodie either. I just caught a glimpse while turning on the TV. My guess is that they said "cheese" 200 times. That number ordinarily seems too high, but not when it's time for Cheesy Con!

As a fan of this show myself, I don't like this particular episode for several reasons:
1. The fact that they treat a sprain like she actually injured her foot. In real life, you CAN do activities with a sprained foot, as long as you have a wheelchair. But I learned looking up sprains in kids' TV shows that this is a common trope (Doc McStuffins also had an episode treating a sprain like a foot injury).
2. Donkey disobeying the doctor's advice and asking Panda to carry her. WHAT MESSAGE IS THIS TEACHING KIDS?
3. The song is terrible because instead of an original piece like most of the show's songs, it's sung to the tune of children's nursery rhymes, with lazy lyrics.
Good points and it's interesting hearing your perspective as a fan. Funny that an ankle sprain is a common trope; I guess it's serious enough to be an "oh no!" moment but not so serious as to be gruesome or upsetting to kids.
And yes it seemed like the messaging of this particular episode was pretty unclear. The only crystal clear message was: CHEESE IS AMAZING AND THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES!
It sounds like this episode stood out (in a bad way) from other episodes, aside from just the cheese issue.
This borders on mid-stage Soviet propaganda, good Lord. There is no way this isn't deliberate, Marielle. And I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it's not possible that the adults writing and scripting this aren't aware of controversies about the dairy industry--the lyric about Parmesan allergy shows this--but they know that the viewers of this show are not. I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but I'm certified in Montessori pre-primary education. I recognize this as a tutorial on this food directed at brains susceptible to all kinds of sensory instruction. The cynicism of this (if PBS is allied with Dairy Checkoff) enrages me. Points to you for singing the cheesganda tunes pleasantly, and thanks for posting!
Wow, I didn't know that Tamara; you would have been a great resource for this topic! This felt so "off" intuitively, and hearing your perspective as someone trained to spot this type of "education" is chilling! You're absolutely right that this presents as propaganda. It's not subtle, and almost as though they got extra pennies for every time they squeezed in one more "cheese" 🤦🏻♀️
@@TotallyForkable My guess on the cheese was 103. I missed a few, my God, but that amount of repetition was not required by the script. It is working as a kind of keyword brainwashing to a very young mind.
Yes like couldn't they even make some clever puns using different words in the cheese-universe (aside from different types of cheese)? I thought we were trying to diversify children's vocabularies?!
They could have spent more time on a more valuable lesson about not leaving toy trucks on the floor.

@@TotallyForkableIf you paid attention to the beginning when she's trying to find the hat, it was Donkey who actually threw the toy truck on the floor, as we see the toy truck fly through the air.

I think you hit the nail on the head when pointing out about that the responsibility should be with the parents. Kids at the age this programme targets would normally have zero autonomy, so a parent should still be able to stop the fridge becoming an all-out cheese-a-palooza. But yeah...that does kinda assume the parents don't already have the fridge full of the stuff, on account of their own rennet-driven desire.
I couldn't help but laugh at 'Ella Mozzarella', though, Perhaps the entire episode's raison d'etre was to provide a vehicle for that name...Perhaps not ;)

Totally agree that most parents aren't in the position to model appropriate boundaries around cheese when they themselves have been "influenced" from a young age.
