  • The Great British Bake Off/Baking Show is a wonderful show but it definitely has its share of questionable moments. Today I am examining some of those moments through the lens of cognitive dissonance when it comes to animal suffering and baking decorations.

Thank you Marielle for another great video! I am always fascinated how commonplace such cognitive dissonance remarks are.

I have watched most of the Bake Off seasons and I've loved them but I've also fought some frustration and disgust at the HEAVY use of animal products. I found myself desperately longing for the day when people will realize that torturing and killing animals is not necessary for any reason!

    • @TotallyForkable

YES, the amount of animal byproducts used in baking especially is sickening. Especially when we are shown (i.e. with Freya) that it truly isn't necessary!

17:38 "Mermaids most likely would be vegetarian" Yes indeed, in Disney's Little Mermaid King Triton yells at Ariel "Do you think I want to see my youngest daughter snared by some *fish-eater's* hook?"

tbf that's just a movie. complex life in the sea as a technological limitation since they can't use fire to make tools, complex metal structures and such. mermaids would most likely be pretty barbaric and would eat whatever high caloric content available to survive. i think they would eat fish.

Great point! I am fascinated by Disney movies and their portrayal of animals since they glorify them while also clearly operating in the same animal-ag-centric world that we all do. One moment that really stands out is when Moana says "I love bacon!" in front of her pet pig and her pig starts whimpering and then Moana gets awkward and is like "uhh...I mean..." Disney really plays both sides of the fence in a weird way.

Interesting take. I assume they would survive on things like spirulina protein, lol

@@Dindonmasker Well, manatees and dugongs are herbivores, and for all we know, merpeople could have evolved from them. After all, manatees have been mistaken for mermaids for a long time.

@@TotallyForkable I love that scene from Moana. It must have influenced countless kids who will go vegan one day. In my headcanon, she had a realization in that moment and that was the last piece of pork she ever ate.

I stopped watching food competition shows many years ago, not long after the advent of the genre, because I can't stand the entire premise. Maybe it's that I'm a trained cook, maybe it's that I'm vegan, maybe it's that I'm aware of how much widespread human hunger there still is, even in the developed world. That the ingredients used on these shows include animal torture just magnifies the perverse nature of this programming, which treats food as a toy, to me. Like, when you factor in the torture of animals and ongoing famines or starvation happening in human communities, it makes these shows look _abominable._ But most viewers are not that deep. Thanks for posting, Marielle!

You're right Tamara, these shows are very tone deaf! These are the reasons I have avoided them in the past as well; along with the animal exploitation, the gluttony and food waste issue has really stood out to me on Bake Off. I feel like unfortunately with mainstream programming we as vegans have a choice of: avoid completely, or try to take the good and leave the bad. The best parts of the show to me are: the people/the human element, and the creativity/artistry. Neither of these things requires them to exploit animals but unfortunately that's the status quo. I have hope that it will only be a matter of time before someone lifts these positive elements and matches them with vegan food!

I thought confirmation bias was when people look for reasons to confirm their bias, meaning to make them feel better about their choices, to relieve themselves of guilt, so they don't have to change. An example would be when people justify eating meat by looking for information that tells them that it kills more animals to harvest a field of wheat, or that they should continue eating animals because it's the healthiest option and vegan are sickly.
It's like looking for things that justify your behavior, and avoiding information that tells you your behavior is wrong.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  2 ปีที่แล้ว

This is how I had always thought of confirmation bias as well, but it seems like maybe both scenarios fit? Changing your behavior to match your cognition also makes sense as confirmation bias to me. Or else Wikipedia mislabeled it. We need a psych major to weigh in!
I don't have access to the source material (Leon Festinger's book) or I would check!

I love this video! I have thought about watching GBBO but have not delved into it yet and I appreciate the explanation about the name & collections on Netflix. Thank you for explaining cognitive dissonance and how common it is, and that it doesn’t make someone a bad person. As a vegetarian I am definitely in that uncomfortable position of feeling drawn to veganism but still not feeling repulsed by dairy and eggs unless I really think about it. I remember years ago not wanting to eat in a restaurant called Little Duck (even though they had vegetarian options) because of all the duck decorations, and not understanding why no one else was bothered.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Eva! I can relate to being in that position that you described as I experienced that for years. It is really hard to understand, when things seem so glaringly obvious/horrifying to us, how others don't even flinch (i.e. your experience with the restaurant).

Interesting. I thought cognitive dissonance was a type of denial, but apparently it still counts if you are fully aware of the contradictions. I have the same thing with enjoying movies that use animals, like Lord of the Rings. There is no vegan substitute for that masterpiece of filmmaking.
Still I've adapted by watching fewer live action movies and getting more into animation. I have rediscovered Disney and anime.
ps. Thanks for the Bambi clip.

TV and movies are difficult because even if there aren't any apparent animals being used the actors have probably been fed them during the day of filming.

    • @TotallyForkable

@v_zach This is a topic that fascinates me SO MUCH. I feel use of animals has really limited my ability to enjoy traditional scripted programming.
I totally get your dilemma with LOTR. Not sure if you're into Harry Potter, but there is a podcast called The Chickpeeps started by Evanna Lynch (aka Luna Lovegood) and a few other people, including the actor who plays young James Potter. They have 2 (at least, they may have done one more) episodes where they do a deep-dive into the treatment of magical animals in the wizarding world. It's nice hearing their perspective as vegans who are huge fans of the books and also directly involved in the movies. I believe it was in their Season 1.
      Glad you appreciated Bambi! ❤️

@adiohead this also fascinates me. On the movie Okja which seemed to be at least in some ways an animal rights film, they were fed meat on set.
