  • Nutsedge in the lawn will quickly show its face during the summer months of lawn care but I have found a few easy ways to remove it using either Sedgehammer or Prosedge. Both of these nutsedge control products have worked well to remove the nutsedge from my lawn.

Perfect timing! My nutsedge is in full force. I will say from my overseeding last fall plus applying air8, it has helped control it. I do still have a good amount in the front though. I irrigate and I’m full sun so it’s nutsedge best friend!

The battery powered sprayers seem to be game changers for spraying weeds.
It’s easy to get off track when you have to stop and pump up, not to mention the diminished spray until you stop.

Yes, sedgehammer has the surfactant in it. It's what I've used for best results for several years. I do have the Ortho pump spray for spot treatment but it's hard on the lawn and tends to spot kill the area because we are WAY over 90 degrees.
While sedgehammer works best for me, I do have to re-apply every season. It either never kills the tuber below, or it's reseeding from around the neighborhood. Regardless I've tried many things and it works best in Phoenix for those looking for something effective.

    • @XF3693

I didnt even notice that they were growing tall under some bush in my garden bed, and started seeing them in my lawn too. it's not too bad right now but I feel like more will pop out soon. my neighbor has tons. I had ordered Sedgehummer for spot treatment (used half of a packet for half gallon of water) I hope I can see the result soon.

Just used sedgehammer this afternoon, I had the 1.33 oz size like you and it said to use surfactant. I think the little " single serving" packs have the surfactant in already if I remember correctly. The rainy spring caused fungus then nutsedge now it's hot any dry and the lawn is starting to check out. Can't win at this game sometimes. You must be lovin the new irrigation system! Cheers and Thanks.

    • @garywheeler1733

The single packs that make one gallon of solution have surfactant already mixed in. The label even says if you add your own surfactant that results will be diminished.

That's the surfactant causing sunburn. To avoid that, spray during early evening (dusk) or early morning (dawn) on a day that isn't going to be full sun. I prefer early evening so that overnight dew can help a bit with residue dilution before sun exposure and some time for the desired plant to rebuild foliar lipid structure that was damaged by the surfactant. Here in Texas, I don't spray after 9am or before 5pm, and only when wind is low.

A quick look online shows Sedgehammer coming in at $66/oz, ProSedge at $52/oz, and Sandea at $37/oz (but sold in 10oz bottles, compared to 1.33 oz bottles for the first two.)
Those products contain halosulfuron as the active ingredient. Another a.i. used for controlling nutsedge, imazosulfuron, is found in a product called Celero which retails for around $19/oz. Keep in mind that the cost per ounce is only worth comparing if the rate you need is equal. If one a.i. calls for twice as much product but the unit cost is half the price, then it works out even.

Ryan, the grass in my new home in Ohio has been neglected for years. After two heavy applications of 2-4-D in early summer I managed to kill 95% of the clover and crabgrass. During the hot part of the summer I noticed my grass is overtaken by nutsedge, this is stuff is pretty much everywhere.

Spraying could be too harmful for the new bermuda. He said that as you decrease the watering that some of it may take care of itself. Then we can spray later when the grass is more established. I'd still like to hear from other opinions and hopefully Ryan responds too as I would certainly trust whatever he has to say about it. Good Luck!

My back yard [ 3/4 ac.] was a mess also. I had the whole yard sprayed with grass and weed killer and then scraped off. New dirt was put down and seeded. Yes, it was expensive, ~$6, 000, but the yard looks nice. Don't expect it to be perfect the first year. The biggest expense was the replacing of black dirt. FYI, I live in north central Illinois.

I used Sledgehammer, but weeds came back the next year. I then used Katana and all my Nutsedge is gone. It kills the root and bulbs. It does take a couple of weeks to get to the root. Katana is expensive (about $300).

I just tore up an old/tired lawn and re-replanted using your name-brand Turf Grass Fescue. ~4 weeks in at this point and am seeing NutSedge. Should I let it go until the lawn is more established (i.e. next year) or can I do what you've described in the video now?

Check the label on your specific product. It should give recommendations on timing on a new seeding. It's typically at least 2-3 mows of the new grass for most products but can't be sure without checking the label for that one. Thanks!

Nutsedge, arggg! I sowed a new lawn two weeks ago after many weeks of preparation. I strictly followed Ryan’s process of killing existing grass (several rounds) waited for any new growth and retreated any new signs of life. I scalped, raked, raked again until the surface was nearly 100% clear of the dead grass. I then added a full 1.5-2 inches of top soil, seeded with a zero weed tall fescue, compacted, peat moss, then water. The new geass started germinating and within 7 days I had a beautiful green lawn coming in. Now at 2 weeks the grass is absolutely beautiful BUT, nutsedge has come up at 14 days and is littered all throughout the new lawn. This is extremely frustrating. I can't walk on the new lawn to start pulling the young nutsedge out, and I can't spray to kill it and risk killing my new grass. Any suggestions??

You'll be fine. just need patience. Similar story to mine. I stopped watering my lawn for an entire year. to let the grass die. Also used Roundup about 3X, once a week, just to make sure all was dead. Then my girlfriend and I spent 8 hours a day for about a month removing as much of the dead grass as possible and leveling the landscape as much as possible in our small 500sq-ft lawn (just to give you an idea how long and thorough we were). Then laid Marathon 2 sod (tall fescue). Looked great! 2 weeks later the nutsedge started to grow - errrrrr!!!! I used the Ortho nutsedge killer about 6 weeks after laying the sod ( to let the good grass mature and be strong enough to handle the Ortho). As expected, I had to use it a couple more times. Wait at least 2 weeks (better to do 3) between each time. Only repeat applications if it still grows after each of the 2 -3 week wait period. And do NOT use it if it will be more than 85F as highs for the day or it MIGHT kill all your grass. Your good grass may turn a little brown but should improve back to norma after about 2 weeks. Only reapply when it return back to normal. If you can apply days where highs will be 80 or less, then even better. Apply after the sun sets or a couple hours before sunrise at the latest. 2 VERY IMPORTANT things: 1 Make sure to read label if it is ok for your grass. 2 - DO NOT OVER DO IT. Each application should just be ONE walk over spray. Walk at normal pace and spray at the rate you walk and only ONE pass. Hope this helps :)

Sulfentrazone in cooler weather. Certainty in warm weather. Prosedge/Sedgehammer is not that effective on Kyllinga. Image(Imazaquin) works too, but it can be hard on the turf

I have new sod laid. 2 months old. Sod is great and healthy from tons of watering and it seems like the roots are established.
However, I do have nutsedge popping up all over. Probably from the existing grass that was removed.
If I use this product or sedgehammer, on the new sod, will that be safe? I heard only to use it on well established turf. Should I just wait to fight this battle next season? Or can I do it now? Thanks!!

Ha! I just told my wife that. Sounds like a good plan. Also have some old grass we didn’t replace that looks a bit diseased. We have been watering it well but it’s yellow on the tips here and there. So I think we need to treat that separately than the new sod with something to help it.

Hey Ryan, would love to get your opinion on the following...would it make sense to pull the nutsedge to expedite the removal, then put down pre-emergent afterwards to stop the seeds? I just got my Tifway 419 Bermuda sod put in around November, so I’m very hesitant to do anything since I haven’t even seen its first green up yet. Thanks for any and all help! Location: South Texas.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

As far as I know (and from researching again today) I don't see any pre-emergent that works for nutsedge. I have had good control with sedgehammer but that's post control obviously. Removing by hand doesn't remove the tubers underground so it will come back and multiply. Such a pesky weed for sure!
