As a teen in the late 60’s and into the 70’s, we took for granted that music would always be this organic and impactful. We didn’t realize we were living in a brief musical renaissance that slowly died away with the advent of disco and rap. Our music was performed by musicians who were singers, songwriters, instrumentalists, and performers; and, they had to sound virtually as good in person as they did on the album because that was the standard. Thank you, Daniel, for appreciating and passing this music along and keeping it alive for another generation. You have a true 70’s soul.

CSNY is unique for several reasons. First off, the combo has 4 super-talented writers yet their writing has NOTHING in common -- they are absolutely distinct as composers and lyricists. They also have unique temperaments which probably explains the uniqueness of their writing. Listen to them enough and you can easily tell who wrote a song and whose guitar you're listening to at any moment. The CSNY live "4 Way Street" album gives you an idea of how stunningly perfect the harmonies and guitar skills blend, both acoustic and electric.

Definitely not “all acoustic”. Stills and Young in particular were renowned for their epic dual-electric guitar jams both live and in many studio cuts. Crosby too often played electric rhythm guitar. I guess by the end of this cut it was hard to miss. Check out Almost Cut My Hair from the same album for another taste of how raunchy they could get.

It's amazing to me that David Crosby was able to create great music on this recording. His long time love, Christine Hinton had just been killed in a horrible car accident and he was just devastated. He said in an interview that I read " When we weren't recording the other guys would be outside having a cigarette...I'd be sitting alone in a cornier of the studio just staring at a wall or something.".

You can spend months in her catalog and learn new things sonically. If you play guitar or understand tunings you'll really enjoy her voicings, tone, lyrics, and ability to convey truth.

Stephen Stills is perhaps one of the finest acoustic guitar players from that generation. I had the pleasure of seeing them live on a few occasions here in CO, mostly at Red Rocks. The three of them (yes, Young is not on this track) have such a unique harmony. Add Young to the mix and it's incendiary (sorry for the Almost Famous reference, but it happens to fit here). Best quote from CSN? Their first live gig was at Woodstock... after they explained to the audience that fact, "man, we're scared shitless!". They wowed the crowd with their harmonies. Stephen is equally proficient on electric guitar also. Love what he does with a wah pedal here.

You remind me of what people did back in the late 60’s on through the 70’s. Liked what you did with Tull and how you got into it. Reminds me of me. I really dig you getting into Nightwish. I got into them earlier this year, and love em. I hear you like guitar riffs. A good wailing riff is the song “Today” by Three Man Army #2. Also the song “Astronomy” by Blue Oyster. It would be interesting if you could listen to them doing this song from their 2012 live on tour to hear how they fine-tuned this song with more matured voices and band support some 43 years later.

You should check out Almost Cut My Hair from the same album, great reaction. I first heard this album the day it was released. Still listen to it to this day, timeless.

Please listen and react to "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield. I am sure you will recognize it. It has been used in numerous movie's such as "Forest Gump". Thanks!

Neil Young’s voice and guitar sound are very distinctive. I don’t hear any Neil on this particular recording. This is almost certainly CSN only, which means Crosby and Nash and Stephen sang and Stephen played all the instruments himself, with the possible exception of the drums.

NY had nothing to do with this song, little to do with the other songs. His contributions he mainly did away from the group and brought them in.

This album (Deja Vu, I believe) is one of the best of all time.
I think the electric guitar here is by Stephen Stills.

Lots of people don't realise that Neil actually only performs on half of the tracks on this album, he's not on this (nor Teach Your Children, the title track, Our House or 4 + 20 (which is Stills solo) and, much like the first album, Stills is playing EVERYTHING apart from the drums (yes folks, even the bass, Greg Reeves plays on most of the album but NOT this cut) - check out the live version from 4 Way Street which is a very different take on the song, much rawer and with some great guitar interplay between Stills and Young (yep, he's on that version!).

If you are interested in knowing more about the group, there are all of these short interview segments with Graham Nash on Y.Tube, separated into subjects - such as how they met etc. I came by a while ago and suggested using Songfacts, which I see you are using. I hope it's a useful resource. Their entries for some songs have a lot of background info you could never guess at, while other songs don't have much. Sometimes Googling the Wikipedia under the song name is even better.

For some great history, there is also the documentary Laurel Canyon, a great way to put it all in context, from 1965 to 1972.

All three of the CSN(Y) songs you've done were Stephen Stills songs, at least primarily. Let's see... "Almost Cut My Hair" by Crosby. "Our House" by Nash. "Ohio" by Young.

Neil Young added a new element to the group with his amazing electric guitar work.... one of the greatest
( super group if you will )
Each one could have easily been the lead in is own group in fact a few of them were at one time ✌😎
    Request:
    You gotta check out.....
Cosby, Stills, Nash & Young with Tom Jones singing.....
Long Time Gone ( live )
It's unbelievable & at first you wouldn't think it would work......
but once you see the faces on David Cosby & the rest of the group when Tom belts out that first line.....
man you know you are in for a wild Rock-n-Roll ride ✌😎
Bonus song with Tom this time with Janis Joplin singing and dancing..... that's right !
    Tom Jones & Janice Joplin......
Raise Your Hand ( live )
Another performance that must be seen & heard !
    ✌😇🎙 ✌😎🎙

The first CSN album I wore out the summer of 1969......still one of my favorite albums of all time. Their second album, Deja Vue, which added Neil Young, is also superb.
