This song inspired many of us back then. My hair was down to my elbows while I worked at Fender building the Rhodes Electric Pianos 1972-77. Then I cut it for work (medical supplies) until 2011.... Retired. Not since, or ever will again.

      How cool!
I very likely played this very song on my old '75 Fender Rhodes --- maybe it was one that you built! ✌🎶
      Wish I still had it...

Back in them days growing your hair long was as much a political statement as a personal choice. It stood for a lot more than just being a fashion of the times.

    • @coinneachmaclellan3121
      @coinneachmaclellan3121 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think that a lot of people these days aren't aware of the truth of your statements and the harassment we faced for wearing our hair long both as unwarranted attention from the police and violence at the hands of local troublemakers, people who didn't accept that "the times they are a-changin"...

Bob Seger described it perfectly. It was a difficult times just because of length of hair. Thankfully times have improved but still painful for being different.

CSN(&Y) is an epic and iconic band. They were well known for their songs of protest, among so many others in their huge catalog. This song was an important song due to the fact that back in the '70s the "establishment" was so anti-long hair and anti-hippy. I highly encourage you to dive more into this band, as their vocal harmonies are legendary. Thanks for such a great choice and reaction! ✌💙✌

It's too bad most of us feel the need to conform to the norm for jobs, better service, etc. Hard to hold on to our identity sometimes. I'm 69. Too old to care abt what others think, right? But generally I'm too self conscious to be who I want to be. Habits. People over the yrs are used to seeing my "workplace persona".

Let your freak flag fly (I say to myself). Sometimes I wonder if I can ever fully let my hair down again. There aren't many people in my life now who can relate to the part of me who is not a part of them, if that makes sense. Some people leave their youth behind and forget it, and others (like us) packed it for the journey. You are the sum of your whole life - before, during and after - and you are free to be who you are. Sounds easy, but it's still possible.

    Almost cut my hair
It happened just the other day
    It's gettin' kinda long
I coulda said it was in my way
    But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
Yes, I feel like I owe it to someone
Must be because I had a flu for Christmas
And I'm not feeling up to par
    It increases my paranoia
Like looking at my mirror and seeing a police car
But I'm not giving in an inch to fear
'Cause I promised myself this year
I feel like I owe it to someone
When I finally get myself together
I'm going to get down in that sunny southern weather
And I'll find a place beside the Lamb
Separate the wheat from the chaff
I feel like I owe it
    To someone, yeah

I believe this is the most important song of the boomer generation. David's vocals, Neil and Stephen's lead guitars, and especially the message, make this song better than Stairway, Hotel California, or Freebird. David's reference to the Lamb reminds us that it's all about peace and love. (Tony Bennett became a pacifist after witnessing the horrors of WWII and the Nazi camps as a infantryman, and UK's great Field Marshall Alanbrooke wrote to his wife about the madness of war and the importance of not romanticizing it.)

@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN You're the one who got it wrong. The song about the Sunset Strip was Stephen's For What It's Worth when he was in Buffalo Springfield. Almost Cut My Hair by David Crosby most definitely an antiwar and support for the long hairs. I accept your apology.
