@@allensfantasticmusicthat is because you don’t feel comfortable with your natural hair. Other hair textures seem less complicated because they wear it as it grows. We feel like we have to always have a style in our head

@@cherrelleg8276 technically every texture’s hair would loc up, so this is a non factor. That’s why even other textures use combs and tools. point is, they’re not uncomfortable with the hair that grows out of their scalp😉 (yes we know the history of it all. But we’re in the present now)
@@Latte-girly90 wow you are so spot on with this because most of us black women don’t feel comfortable with our hair how it grows out of our head always have to have it “styled”. I have been wearing my hair out in an Afro some days minimal styling and I feel so confident I get so many compliments on my hair and people just stare and people tell me how beautiful I look with my hair. I still wear extension braids and wigs when I want to switch it up but I have started to get comfortable with just wearing my hair out
A lot of hairstylists will use the comb attachment to blow dry the hair instead of trying their hand at using a paddle brush with a blow-dryer. They tend to think it's convenient and quicker when they could actually be tiring themselves out and possibly damaging the hair they're working on. I appreciate you demonstrating your best technique. Because of you I feel like I can do it myself instead of paying someone to put my hair through unnecessary stress.

I use the revlon blow dryer brush. It’s a life saver and cuts my blow drying time in half or more.

This is my 8 year old daughters exact texture and hair color. I am learning so much about the tension method from you. I usually break her hair down into those twisted sections before washing. Last time I blow dried her hair I used the Dyson with the comb attachment and she complained about the heat. I think the tension method and paddle brush is more efficient especially for a child. Thank you for this gem.

You should get the Hot Tools Blow Dryer brush, it makes this process so unbelievably easy. My ten year old daughter does her own hair now with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that I watched a video where you were contemplating teaching. Based on this video alone I think you need to open a school and not be a teacher unless you are a teacher of teachers at your own school. Your knowledge is amazing thanks for sharing. This is great! The stylists I have gone to don't understand that it takes time to detangle our coarse 4c hair. Lol it be your own people too. My poor hair always gets ripped through. I'm used to it now but some days I just opt to do my own hair. I know what she's like. Hopefully I can find someone like you in my area.
Thanks for this. Not only does the peanut gallery make our hair "weird" but we do it to each other. We went from Black is Beautiful in the 70s to something is wrong with you through the 80s and 90s. It was like natural hair was a crime. We went from just a nice press or blow out to you need a Jerry Curl, relaxer, fried dyed and laid to the side. Now we back to all things natural.
When you say the "peanut gallery" who are you talking about, because honestly the only people making afro textured hair weird or difficult is other black people. I don't mean to be rude, but we love to say stuff like that, and truly no one else is thinking about us or our hair.

From the late 60s through the 70s, it was all about social change and challenging the status quo. The people who were in high school and college during the 60s and 70s went on to adopt the yuppie lifestyle of the 80s and 90s. Of course, that meant that Black folks would either straighten their hair or make their curl pattern looser in order to get a decent job, and unfortunately we’re still fighting for the right to wear our natural hair in the workplace.

I have extremely course 4C hair. I Tried this method for the first time in my life, as opposed to the blow dry afro attachment brush (which usually works really well), but I must say this is by far the best method, I had hardly any breakage, in honestly in awe. Thank you so much 😢.

Thank you for explaining the appropriate products to use after washing in detail, I feel like everyone always skips that. Been trying to figure out if I needed to use a leave in b4 the heat protectant for like 3 hrs!
It doesn't really matter they are all gonna mix on top of the surface of the hair anyway

This is a great method. I’m going to get that brush because I’ve been seeing my other faves use it as well. I usually put a plastic cap over the head to keep in the moisture and just pull out the sections as I go. You’re right it can’t be too wet though. Great education as always 👍🏾

That’s exactly why hair porosity is important especially for naturals because we need to know how our hair is going to receive certain products. I have wasted hundreds maybe even thousands of dollars trying to find hair products that’s worked for my hair. Once I understood my hair porosity I was able to figure out what products my hair would receive or soak up and what products would just sit on my scalp or roll off. I figured out how to open my hair follicles and what would seal the moisture in. It may not be that important to some people but it definitely saved me a lot of money and time.
This video is full of so many gems. I really wish my clients had the time to spend as much energy on knowledge like hairdressers have the time to spend the energy they come in focused on one aspect and don’t even understand it fully and then have all these judgments on their selves, it turns into this whole other thing besides, just trying to give them the hairstyle they want based on the hair they have

Thank you sooo much for this video so informative and there is definitely a difference between a paddle brush and the comb nozzle. I tend to use the comb nozzle when my hand starts to get tired because it is faster but it does not give you the smoothness I desire.

Loved the video/tutorial and commentary! Thank you so much. I have suffered a tremendous amount of breakage since using the comb attachment for the last several months since my Revair broke. I won't be using the comb anymore for all of the reasons that you listed. I got tangles knots CONSTANTLY while blow drying my fine hair with it. My ends were trashed and badly splitting. I had about 3+ inches cut off and I'm starting over with a clean slate. I'm going back to the paddle brush with all of the great advice you've provided here on how to blow dry natural hair.
Yeah, that comb attachment I had to stop using for the reasons you said; it really just takes through, and I had to do too many passes. Once I started using a brush, I was like yeah, this is MUCH better.

I use the comb attachment and using a titanium blowdryer is what works best for me. Less passes and the heat is evenly distributed through the hair.
This video is a year old!!!! Omg I have been trying to figure out what I’m gonna do about my hair along with my two daughters. I used to take really good care of my natural hair, then I got postpartum depression after my second daughter in 2017 and I have sucked at caring for all of our hair. My youngest daughter has more hair than me and her sister combined. We’re all natural.

Porosity helps understand how your hair absorbs water. You can spritz water but with low porosity you need heat to open up the cuticles to take it in otherwise it just sits on top of your hair....still remaining dry. It changed the quality of my deep conditioning & oil treatments knowing I need to be under a dryer for longer for all that goodness to get in
No that's actually not true. You don't need heat to absorb water. That's like saying your hair can't get wet without heat. Porosity as everyone knows it on TH-cam has been completely misconstrued.

The one thing knowing my porosity helped me with is conditioning and moisturizing my hair. Because it’s low porosity I need to apply heat to open my hair shaft when conditioning. Also my hair can absorb lighter products better.
The Revlon One Step Paddle Brush dryer get the roots soooo well .
I agree! Even when I brow dry my hair at home I do not like the comb attachment. The tension method is the best. It's even more efficient when you pull the hair taught with your hand and waver the blow-dryer from the roots to tips. I also use the tangle teezer blow-dryer brush. Grant it, I have a Revair so I don't have to go through this hassle no more.
I thoroughly enjoy your commentary, you say the things I think when I do my clients hair and that comb attachment UGH. It has its uses but I prefer the paddle brush. This was a great video.

I don't own a paddle brush but I think my detangling brush will still work, I just have to work in smaller sections. But I absolutely love this technique. I also don't own heat protectant so I'll still have to maintain tension method with the dryer a couple inches for my hair. Currently in a protective style (mini braids) but once I take them down I intend on doing another blowout (did one before protective styling). I feel like I need to have my hair completely stretched out more but I need a fail safe way. I only ever either use threading or tension method. I'll be trying some techniques from this tutorial next time around 🙌🏾

You make me want to try it again and just be patient with myself. Plus find a really GOOD paddle brush. Do you have some you can recommend?

Im a nurse and have been obsessed with hair videos lately, well after my last silk press damaged my curls. Wat Ive realized is I have to have patience with my black hair... like how you detangle and twist the hair before blow-drying I will implement that on my next wash day . Awww .lol.. i loved this video ..i could definitely see the confidence transition from you using the brush to the comb. I started using the comb so i became very proficient in blowdrying, and later bcame used to using the brush.. the brush took me waaay longer to completely dry the hair
I have a funeral to go to in two days, I usually keep my hair in twist. It’s about past my mid back and I’m gonna try my best with this video 😂 idk how to straighten my hair but I’m doing better at detangling so thank you! Oh yeah, I peeped comb attachments back in '08! While I did love my gold n hot blow dryer, I could not mess with the comb attachment. All that damn work🤣 The concentrator is definitely my favorite.

With the comb attachment, you really should start from the roots and then work your way down of course, on very detangaled hair

Her hair is so healthy 😍💕 seeing your technique, my technique isn’t too bad 😮 it’s kinda hard to use a brush on myself though so I rather the attachment but I always do the tension method first.
Try to position the brush and then chase it thru like you do the flat ironing with the comb chase method. That's what I used to do after using the tension method

The few times I’ve blown my hair out I grab the nozzle for more control. Next time I’ll try using a detangling brush instead cause that comb does pull and doesn’t get the roots well.

1 tip I learned is THE VERY FIRST STEP WHILE HAIR IS STILL WET, always dry only the roots FIRST, around the perimeter of the head.
So start from the side roots going all the way around.
And ALWAYS STRETCH THE HAIR WHEN THAT BLOWER IS ON.
So when you start to actually blow dry from the back, all your roots are already straightened smoothly.
Doing your parts first will allow the hair to dry in its coil form, which you don’t want.

Thank you for this video! I just tried my first blow out on my 4c hair with a paddle brush and I must say I "HAD" decent results except for my ends. They were very ragged and still had tight coils at the ends. Is that because I need a trim or because I have never used heat on my hair since I grew it out 5 years ago? I tried lighter products ( a leave in/heat protectant and serum) but the ends began to revert as soon as I was done. So much work but it's longer and since I deal with constant tangling, I'm thinking a blow dry would be quick so I can braid it up and not wait 2 days to dry in large plaits for a heat free stretch. I need professional help!
