I wish Nintendo would listen to me PLEASE! Why not just have a set amount of homes in the town, then characters would move in and out of the set homes, not take the house with them, that's stupid. I've worked so hard to plant all my flowers and make roads, then a stupid villager moves right on my road and messes it all up, I hate it! Who's with me?!

Literelly! Basically a villager moved straight into my path in front of my house. (Moved out) next villager moves in the exact same space (moved out) now FREAKING PIETRO MOVED IN THE EXACT SAME SPACE!!!! Ughhhhhhh. Worst, I cant get into my house without going through my garden of carnations. 😫😫😫😫😫
I had a villager literally move DIRECTLY BEHIND ME so annoying.. and i put myself on the opposite side of the map from EVERYONE ELSE
Created a new town where my house was secluded from the others, with a nice section next to it for a waterfall and flower area that I would later add a bench and some other pwp's to. Next day : Olaf smacks his house on my flowers

If you have nine villagers, the only way to get a tenth one is by asking a camper (or an animal from another town, but we'll just use "camper" here) to move in. Campers will always place their plot of land two days after you ask them to move in, for example: If you ask a camper to move in on Monday, a plot of land for their house will appear in your town on Wednesday, and they will move in on Thursday. This can be helpful to know when doing this trick.
I just want to say you left out an extremely IMPORTANT detail in plot resetting:
Sometimes you will make a new character file, run around your town, and you won't see any new plot houses. You will quit, load your mayor, and BAM there's a random plot that you KNOW you didn't see when you loaded a new character file.
This is because you are restarting, and it's a brand new day and the game is still being random because you didn't save. Therefore, if you are loading a new character file and you don't see any plotted house, you still need to *save*! THEN you can delete the character file. This way, when you finally load your Mayor file, you won't be in risk of a random new plot.
Ah! So that's what's been happening with me (except the last couple times it's happened, it was a random move-in)! Does the same thing happen when you ask an animal to come to your town? Because I don't want to lose any dreamies that I may have invited to my town. :/

Kendall Plays As a Turtle I believe that actually doesn't work. As I've learned, once you load your mayor file the town is set for the day. Even if you then exit to home w/o saving, the town is saved( fossils, npc visitors, new plots).

Why can't you just build extra houses as a public works project? It could be cheaper than most projects and it should count towards the project limits. That way, you can decide where they live and you can expect where they live. If a camper wants to move in but you need one more vacant house, I guess you can put him on a "waiting list" and finish the house. They limit for houses is the limit your village can take (10 houses)

I love that there aren't signposts all around town in New Leaf, the signposts in previous games just got in my way and took up space. At the same time, as the mayor you should be able to choose where the animals put their houses so they don't destroy your town.

This is soooo helpful thank you SO much Dale! I've had rare flowers and orchards destroyed, paths messed with, its frustrating! I'm so glad you did a video on this.
To those who complain it isn't working, i guarantee you're doing it wrong, sorry to sound snotty but yeah. Listen to what he says carefully, do NOT open your save file that current day or the town will already be saved/loaded and thus the house will get stuck in the crappy "not where i wanted it to be" placement.

My only issue with this is I never know when a random villager is going to move into my town and i just log in with an existing character. So how I am supposed to know when to make the new character and look around???
hollymwwolf General rule of thumb; if you have less than 10 villagers, create a new character to look around with.
If you have 10, there's no need as no-one else could possibly move in.
DazzaBound Ah I thought so, alright I'm going to start doing that now because I can't stand it when they mess up my plans!!! However I do have one more question. Is there a way to change the time to the next day and then make a new character to test it out for new villagers? I tried to change the time on my main character, left, and came back and went on her again to check to see if it worked and it did not. So is there anyway to pull this off?? DazzaBound But isn't that only if you have invited someone? Because if you haven't invited anyone then you don't need to create a new character to look around if you have 9 villagers already because that would be the only way to get the 10th villager

You have to make a new character and do it every time before you use an existing one just to make sure. It takes a pretty long time though.

I can't not tell you how many times I have passed this video to others so they can learn this trick. Great video!
If the villager is moving from someone else's town (either through streetpass or from inviting them yourself) then only the location changes.
Any other situation, then the villager will also change.

Heads up! While the villagers setting up plots are set to be a certain personality (that no matter how many times you do this trick over and over, if the first villagers attempting to move in is "cranky", then all plots following it will also be "cranky"), but the villagers appearing at the campsite are not. I did this trick and got "uchi" villagers setting up plots, but at the campsite they were mixed personalities every time I redid it. And after doing it for quite a while, I finally got Poppy ("normal" personality) and was also lucky enough to not have any plots in my town.

I did everything you said and Paula (my incoming villager) will not move. I had placed my plot somewhere like yours. Guess I'll just move into a new town, maybe
Thanks to this guide, I made sure that Marshal wasn't going to choose a questionable spot.
You just do the same method as in this video. Create a new character, check the tent. If it's someone you don't want, hit home and start again. When you get the one you want, talk to Isabelle, place your tent, save, quit, delete that character, load up your main character, convince the camper to move in :)

It's basically guess work, but if you load up an existing character and find a plot of land, you will not be able to move it, even if you turn your game off without saving. You MUST use a new character at the beginning of the day.

i dont think this works anymore, time travelling causes the roped off home to instantly get moved into..
i think i figured a way and i'm working on it right on. so what if jan 26 i invited marshal in, save and quit. then reopen same character, change date to jan 27 5:55am. save and quit. start new save file, which will no doubt start on the 'next day' ? just a thought, i was thinking the same thing that you posted lol. and it worked! chrissy moved right next to my rose garden :3
It seems to still be working for a lot of people. But every time I try it now it just automatically moves them in :(

Scabaret it isn't time traveling. He is making a new character, then leaving WITHOUT SAVING. It is called resetting. When you time travel, you fast forward into the game, and things change to where it is like time passed.
Good to know. I'm kind of flexible as to where new villagers plant their houses so don't know how often I'll use this, but still could wind up being useful.
I just wish there was some way to summon particular characters (like my favorites from the original AC) instead of just getting random and mostly unwonderful ones.
I keep resetting but the villagers ALWAYS move their house on top of mine!
I know it working because its someone different every time but there are plenty of open spaces and they always choose right next to my house!
The only character I need is Marina so that my Town is complete

Thanks much for this. I found it just in time to stop Margie from plunking her house down on a path AND almost entirely blocking one end of a bridge. (There's also something in your voice that reminds me very pleasantly of Eddie Izzard. ) Guess from now on, I will be starting every single day in my little town with a brand-new character named Zoney. Maybe her name should be Clara: she will live and die thousands of times in order to save The Doctor, er, Mayor.
It's a great idea and all but day one I laid the paths and placed grass all around my town except for the ten squares(3x3+1 in center at bottom=shape of house) and did this 13 times, leaving the entire bottom area of my town for villagers to move like a sub-division. They move into these spots because I have 13 of them every time and the rest of the town is covered in patterns except where projects, flowers and trees and such are. This worked for both my towns but it also means I cannot have a big flower patch(thanks to Kid Kat for showing me the error and my hate for him), but this has worked for me and now they live where I tell them to. Everything else is in the north.
I loaded up my character to find Filbert moving in RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE. I tried this but it didn't work due to me already loading my main character :/

This didn't work for me at all, and I did follow every step exactly... Every time I started the new save file over and over again the house was in the same place. So annoyed cus it's right in front of my house!
***** You must have went on with a character that was already saved and locked it in place. This method works everytime. I have plot set over 50 villagers in 4 towns with this method.
+Custom LPS I agree with you. @Ruby you must of went on your continue file before you tried making a new character that's the only time it wont work. It works for me every time, it gets tedious and takes far too long sometimes but the main point is it moves/resets.
It's weird because I went with an existing character but I didn't save and then with the decoy accounts it moved once and never unmoved so

I figured out that my dilemma was because I had 8 villagers instead of 9 when plot resetting for a random move-in. The last time I plot reset was for Kiki, and she was to be my tenth animal, and it only took 3 - 5 tries to get her in the right spot! :D

Does the time matter? I mean like the hours but not date.
An animal moved in directly one space in front of my town hall. So annoying that I loaded my existing character first on that day.

That villager took place right in front of my house took of a hole of rare flowers AND destroyed my path !!!
I tried this with Shep, it took a good few hours to have him put his house in a good spot. He kept going to the same spot most of the time, but I finally got him in a good spot. Lucky I only have two more villagers I'll have to do this with D
I noticed the plot of land for a house when I loaded up mines. I made a new character but it never moved. Help fast?!
He said you need to create a new character before loading up your game. If you didn't do that, it's permanent :(

Wish I could try this! I already have 4 players though :( Awesome strategy! I usually just put streetlamps where I don't want houses to be (you can always take them down later) but they keep destroying my perfect orchard and I can't put lamps there.

Ps: Is there a way to change the name of your town? My 9y old daughter created her town and resetted about a zillion times to get a decent lay-out. When she finally did, she mistyped her town name and only noticed it a few days later... She is now stuck with a misspelled name... Is there a way to change this ???

Does the reset trick work if you boot up with a character already in the town?
And just hit reset and deal with resetti? Will the villager's lot placement be randomly generated over again? Cause if you can do that it is faster then going through the character boot up.
No. After you pick your character with Isabelle before the game starts, your game does a "loading save," which sets in stone what has technically happened that day before you started playing.
like Jill said... when you load an established player, Isabelle is "preparing your town" the game is loading any new changes that need to happen for the day, and saving it. once that happens the town, and any new move ins are set in stone..
You know you can choose the Public Works Project of the custom sign to reserve spots right? If you have a special spot you'd like to get to later, for example I saved mine for a police station, they can't choose that spot. If its only one spot and you're just waiting for the request (like me) you don't have to pay anything, just wait till its requested and cancel the project and build again!
can you load your main character and time travel to 5:55am just before the new day, wait 6 minutes and then create the new save file or will logging into the main character AT ALL mess everything up? i dont really want to wait until tomorrow to do this so yeah.
This is actually the only way to TT and reset at the same time. I usually do 5:58 the next day and then load up my mayor, save immediately, then start a new save. By the time the new character walks out of the train station it is 6:01 and the new day has started.

New Leaf in general is a much better game. I think the only ones who can really love New Horizons are people who’ve never played another Animal Crossing before.
You can also just lay items down where ever They shouldnt move to. It actually Works I tried it with Stitches

aww man i did it all wrong!! I load up my existing character!! ugh maybe i should wait until i get 9 villagers and do this trick. My world is still look empty so i don't need to worry about that because i've not yet planned my town yet :/ i need to wait for the specific villager to leave ( don't want her to leave though!!) but she plotted her house right next to my house and the entrance to my town..it a stupid place to plot on XD and one new villager plot on the place i want to put a path on... even though ACNL is so adorable it difficult to play....

I want creative mode in acnl for the switch, so I don’t have to hack to landscape. Maybe you could visit other peoples town in creative mode that they have done! A lot of very unique towns could be made with creative mode.

If you invite a camper, or a villager from another town, to move in then they will USUALLY place their plot the following day.
Is it true that if you have a villager moving into your town that you can use the reset trick to get a different villager? Camping villager not applying obviously.
Yes. Although villagers who you've invited to move in from the campsite and friend's towns won't change, nor will ones who silently decide to move in via streetpass.

Alright, so I started a new character because I thought that someone would move into my town. I looked around and sure enough, someone DID move in, but it was in an ok spot (not the best, but it wasn't in the way of any paths or anything), so I put my house down as well. But before I could get my TPC, I changed my mind and quit without saving. I started a new character and looked around, but I didn't see anybody new moving in (I did this quite a few times).
TL;DR: It seems that if you set down your house and then quit without saving, nobody will move in on that day. So idk, that info could be useful to someone.
Man, I don't know of any good spots in my town to plunk down a house for the trick. I guess I have some time to decide before Celia moves out this week.
