I put my brake on backwards a week ago! I wondered why it sounded different. Amazing the things we do when rushed or don’t have adequate lighting. Thanks for at least showing that to us.
After watching several other videos and reading a few forum posts, I still had questions. Thank you for taking the time for making this video. This is the best WJ knuckle and brake swap info I've found.
Good REAL world video! These guys kill me when they make a video saying, "next all we have to do is install this whatchamacallit, now onto this".They don't say anything about something going wrong or being the wrong part and that it took a whole day or several extra hours getting past that point! And they never get dirty?
Oh my gosh!!! I had too much luaghing when you were at the pick-a-part...I literally rewatched it 4 times...too bad can't upload images on here...captured you wailing on that knuckle(?) With that drive shaft...omg too funny!!
probably hard to keep track of everything your doing while thinking about trying to film everything thanks for taking the time and making the videos the guy from Michigan that won you knife
I have just got over having laser surgery to fix some drain holes in my eyes and having cataract surgery. I can sympathize with your situation. One positive note, cataract surgery does have the possibility to improve your eyesight with some lens adjustments. My lenses made it so I don't need glasses to drive but I still need reading glasses. I thought it was a good trade off. Worth a thought. Looking forward to a positive result for you. 🤕
Dude! Everything I do on mine is like that! Finally getting around to mounting my Ironman Shackle Relocation Brackets only to find out after test fitting the rear driver side first and drilling the holes. The main bumper brackets for the new XRC Rock Crawler bumper are going to have to be installed under the shackle brackets or modified to sit on top with spacers on the third nut strip bolt with the rear mounting holes elongated, but there's not enough room on the top two holes? It's always something!
Good morning. I had the same problem with the rotors, in the end I ran out and bought the WJ hubs and rotors from a junkyard. Seeing that they only need a little sanding, I'll leave them as spares for a future conversion. I wanted to ask you a question, does your Cherokee have stock steering? Have you needed a ball joint? Anything else to change the brakes? I just want to change the brakes for now and keep driving. Thank you very much Best regards.
Nice swap out install! Hope to see some more handgun videos…I just bought the latest Springfield 9mm…Hellcat Pro 3.7 inch barrel with 15 count magazine. I shot it for the first time at my LTC class on the 7th. Sweet! Great video as always, Rick! Safe travels! ~Jim~
still haven't found a place to shoot. plus all the pearl clingers out in San Fran-freeko that run this shit show don't seem to appreciate gunpowder and lead....or freedom.
ATE/TEVES (stamped with a #4835 on its backside) setup features a metal wire retaining clip to help hold the brake pad in place, and the Akebono (which should be stamped with a #4802) does not.
I totally would have set it on Jack stands, put it in 4 hi and ground the hubs to size with an angle grinder... But I have a WJ and I'm going to figure out an axle swap and long arm lift when I go for big tires.
That doesn't sound sketchy at all! Fortunately I have a belt grinder. Id swap to one ton axles if I planned on going to 35s or bigger. but then things start to get ridiculous! You start chasing the weekest link and drivability goes out the window. For me 33s seem like a good compromise for a daily driver/overlander.
@@dzlfreek yeah, looking at what people do, I think they wind up eliminating too many bushings, unintentionally huge scrub radius (and bad front axle geometry in general) , heavy springs instead of appropriate damping, no anti-sway bar and excessive weight with a high CG. I'm hoping that I can keep my WJ sitting pretty low, driving good on the streets and with a wheel swap be a pretty decent rock crawler that can travel dirt roads at speed.
So if the purpose of the hub spacer is to properly align the U joints, and I have a 94 2wd. In theory couldn't I do without the spacer if I use my 94 style unit bearing since the axle shaft isn't an issue? Thanks for the informative video, lots of good missing information I haven't seen elsewhere.
no, you'd have to change all the bracketry on the axle to make the WJ axle fit a XJ - spring perches, control arm brackets and sway bar end link brackets are different between the two.
I'm still waiting to see if anyone just uses the WJ Hub Bearing unit for this swap, and the differences. People have talked about it, but nobody has clearly explained why that won't work. I've already done this conversion on my 98 using the 01 xj wheel bearing, but there are a lot more aftermarket wheel options out there for the 5x5 lug pattern. I wouldn't be opposed to swapping out, and so far the only reason I have seen that people don't use the WJ Hub is because of the bolt pattern. I'm sure there are other reasons, just not clear on what they are. My rears are already set up to convert for 5x5, all I have to do is relocate the studs as the axle shaft is pre-drilled for both lug patterns. Would make trail repairs much easier if all I had to do was source a WJ Hub or rotor that can be obtained at any parts store.
I did the brake swap on mine over the summer and my pedal feels a little soft still even after a good bleed was wondering if you had the same issue at first. I have a 98 so it has the better booster and master so figured I would ask and see if you had any ideas
@@dzlfreek yeah we did a full flush and everything is brand new from the master back. I did really drive the jeep before I did the swap so maybe that’s why it feels weird. Once I bought it I started a full build on it so in the spring we will see how it is
If you were planning an axle swap. Putting Dana 44 off 97-06 TJ Rubicon. Would it be beneficial to use the WJ upgrades brakes? Currently running 33’s on my XJ.

well, thank you!
They build new wj lower ball joints with zerks mounted on the edge so you can still grease them after installing.
Thank you sooo much for this video! I couldn't find any other video or forum that explains the bearing/rotor combo.
thanks for watching!
I subscribed because you showed all the errors and what trying to get things done quick looks like. Keep the upgrades coming

I wouldn't know what to do if it wasn't
Well at least you showed that it’s possible to put it backwards. Still though great video!
hey man thanks for the video,i also can respect the hell out of you for ya honesty takes a man to do so let alone show it 💪🏽💪🏽
What steering components did you use? Seems like an added benefit would be to get rid of the Y configuration that Cherokees use.

Great video, question. Can I use my XJ unit bearings ???? I may have missed it.
Yes you can but you'll have to use 1/4" spacers between the caliper mount and the knuckle unless you use 99-01 unit bearings. see 14:05

stock xj

Would it be possible to run 15 inch wheels on this swap?
Is there a easy to tell the better calipers from the less gooder ones
ATE/TEVES (stamped with a #4835 on its backside) setup features a metal wire retaining clip to help hold the brake pad in place, and the Akebono (which should be stamped with a #4802) does not.
Put a piece of wood between seat and brake pedal, and stop the brake line leaking 🙂
So what about steering did you just use xjs y link or can you use the wjs cross over steering
looks like the caliper pins are stuck on that pass. side caliper

re-centered the center link and readjust the toe in. Im going to do OTK steering in the future

yes
aftermarket brake lines work
Do you have to run 17 inch wheels with this setup?
15s with some grinding of the caliper. 16s fit just fine
Isnt it easier to swap the whole axle?
no, you'd have to change all the bracketry on the axle to make the WJ axle fit a XJ - spring perches, control arm brackets and sway bar end link brackets are different between the two.

probably the splines and the bearing offset are different because the half shafts use a CV joint instead of a U joint....but im just guessing
Idk if ur still responding to comments on this old video... but what steering did you use with this swap ? Stock WJ?
Still rocking the stock xj steering
@dzlfreek so the drag link still on the tie rod or did you put it up on the knuckle like it was on the WJ ?

WJ brakes mucho gooder than the stock XJ. noticeable improvement.
so you can use your XJ steering?

You may have to clearance the calipers or run a spacer. It’s going to be tight
