I grew up as a commercial fisherman in Wisconsin. Everyone built their own boats out of plywood or bought thin-skinned riveted aluminum jon boats. My dad was an innovator and found a guy in Illinois building welded aluminum boats. My dad bought several and acted as a middleman for a number of other fishermen and even the DNR. These boats are just indestructible. I still have his 20 footer. The sides are really low as it was built for raising box traps and hoops nets, so it is not the same kind of beast as you are building. I wish I had the money to build about an 18 footer in the same kind of format as a Smokercraft. That would be the boat of a lifetime.
Awesome Damon, the mid west is just starting to really discover plate built aluminum boats. We commonly get asked "Can this boat handle the Great Lakes" and people have this perception that their riveted or welded light gauge boat failed so a plate boat cant be better. It's fun to see it grow and see and hear people first impressions when they get a boat of this caliber.
Do you weld the boat hull from inside and outside too? And do you use a different aluminum gage for the bottom then sides? Or all the same, is the gas tank insulated from the hull or is part of it, does it condensate water inside the tank when riding in cold water temperature. Thanks
Hull is welded inside and out on this model. That's not necessarily needed particularly on smaller vessels but we've been moving to doing that on all models. Fuel tanks need to be kept full regardless of material. You're not allowed to insulate them with foam, and you don't want to either.

great work. on something that scale, how do you combat weld prep/oxide layer removal? also what about cleaning the smut off around the welds, given how much welding is involved?
If you're welding on aluminum that's been in the water or even outside for a duration of time, it's more problematic and weld prep is performed in the way of chemical or mechanical such as a wire brush. Even then, sometimes that's not enough and from time to time we have boats that are in for modifications or customizations and the aluminum just pushes contaminates back into the weld, you just have to chip the weld out and run it again. For fresh and new aluminum if any oxide layer is built up is so minimal it burns off immediately. We mostly just wipe off the oils that come on the aluminum to protect it from oxidizing during transport. Once the weld is done, the weld smut can be wiped away or wire wheeled off. Lots of smaller rabbit trail conversations mixed in here that I didn't go down but great question.

Not sure what you're asking. There isn't a size scale of Length (x) has to have a width of (y) or a draft of (a). You have to engineer the hull with all sorts of calculations on stability and functions.
Some manufacturers offer all the aluminum laser cut, delivered as a flatpack. You just weld it together. You need a heavy duty MIG with a water-cooled spool gun and some practice welding aluminum but anyone can do it with some practice.
Can Man, we bought the company in February of 2018. The previous owner didn't care about people or about details in the rigging, we didn't buy it for that. We bought it because the hull was extremely sound and the the ride is excellent it just needed someone at the helm that cared. 250 changes in the first year alone. We build a horse of a different color now. Sorry your buddy had issues, but it wasn't under my watch and wasn't like anything we build now. I bend over backwards to make any issue that arises good.
