Session musicians are the best musicians you never heard of. Day one in the studio theyre playing country. Day 2 rock. Day 3 heavy metal. Day 4 jazz. Day 5 pop. Amazing musicians and most often better than musicians in a band.
I first knew of Kevin Gilbert while at Yamaha music. His band Giraffe had just won the world honors at the annual Yamaha contest in Japan. Then came Toy Matinee and my god what great song writing and production. I met Kevin at his manager’s home right before the record came out, what a great guy, it was a meeting I’ll never forget. Knowing you were in the band makes everything complete. An absurd amount of talent was in that band. It is still in regular rotation at home and in the car.
Tim has the GREATEST “guitar face”. Most look pained, the only thing I can compare it to is a baby having their belly rubbed. It’s such a gift that he shares his knowledge and history with us. Thanks Tim!!!!
@@matthewmuller5794 That's not really a criterion though, most people don't look at their fingers while playing (obviously Tim is an *amazing* player, just saying that not looking at your fingers has very little to do with it :D)
@@hansfranz8795 I don't know... it seems the vast majority of the time the player is looking st the fretboard. 2 exceptions come immediately to mind, Tim and a guy named Beck. Lol
What is great about all of this is that the people who were wrongly credited for parts, actually stood up and stated who the credit really belonged to!
Slash is a pretty cool dude,he gave Joe Perry his 59 Les Paul back, that Joe sold during the 80´s when he was pretty much broke from all the drug abuse and ended up getting sold to Slash, many years later. He also admitted openly, that he took lessons from Myles Kennedy, who tought him some chromatic Jazz/Fusion techniques and theory.
Tim you are so humble. I hope you don’t find these “history” lessons tedious because I love them! Your perspective and the context you give is fascinating.
Like Tim Pierce, David Williams was one of the 80's more ubiquitous can-do guitarists that you bring in on your hit album when you finally get serious and you need tracks that are gonna actually work. David was famous for recording his scratchy Strat-grooves "right into the board" with all FX added later. As you can see in Tim's room above, one would never accuse Tim of such paucity :)
Tims one of these guys that you would never take for a guitar player .But when he plays watch out because he's so tastefull and shreds with a sense of melody and feeling that can't be taught ..its natural for him and shines through .he's in my top 10
Love these back stories from the great session musicians from massive hits of the past. Thanks Tim. I wish more folks from the industry would tell more stories like these.
I get the feeling after listening to this that all successful session musicians take credit very seriously and go above and beyond to not "step on toes" or crap on anyone.
Yup, it’s one of the most competitive jobs in the industry, a lot of it has to do with how easy you are to work with as opposed to technical ability. Tim is obviously a very nice guy and probably very easy to work with, that’s why he’s been so successful
@@SpaceJockey805I can see that. He's a fantastic player too. For anything that he lacks in technique he makes up for with control and precision. Imo anyway. After reaching a certain 'level' it mostly becomes opinion anyway.
Guy Pratt's "Last Plane Out" vid brought me here. Thanks for helping to spread the word about the mighty Toy Matinee, Tim. I never understood why that record didn't do any better, but probably a mix of being too artsy plus the production was ahead of its time. Then grunge happened, and well...
Thanks for this, Tim. I was a huge fan of Kevin Gilbert’s when Las Plane Out was released, forever ago, and was saddened by his death. My grieving increased exponentially after hearing more of Kevin’s work posthumously. More so: The Shaming of the True, every time I listen to it, fills me with simultaneous joy and heartbreak, imagining what other amazing music was in his head that never got produced.
Gregory Todd Smith totally! I know in the intro he mentioned Slash denying involvement but in Slash’s book and other interviews he goes in-depth about playing on the song and meeting Michael and Brooke Shields. Maybe he decided it’s easier to just go along with the rumors than to deny them?
Tim, I am not a guitar player (I am a drummer), but I love watching your videos! The joy on your face when you play is infectious! Toy Matinee is one of my all time favorite albums! It's as close to perfection as it gets! I love playing along to Brian's masterful parts, and I think I have everything Kevin ever recorded. Thank you for sharing your talent and bringing joy to the world!
I heard you play many times back in the 70’s in Albuquerque with ur band Traveller, usually at Ned’s, then you left town for the big time and the Albuquerque music scene has never recovered. You were good then but ur great now. Thanks for the memories I’ll never forget!

Hey Tim, you are freaking amazing. It’s so great to hear who played on what, and you played a bunch of fabulous guitar! Thanks so much, I get inspiration to get creative from you
