It never ceases to amaze me that there's a place where you can get the greatest information from world class musicians for free , and 133 people still give it a thumbs down .
I know who thumbs down stuff like this? I swear if someone got video of Jesus coming down from heaven riding a unicorn there’s some jackass out there that would 👎

Tim's amazing for how he plays and what he shares. On top of being an amazing musician he's so darn likable and transparent. I can see why someone would be overwhelmed by how good he is and how masterfully he plays. It can be intimidating.
Possibly they either A) knew everything and simply cannot learn more because they're awesome gods of the guitar or B) simply couldn't fathom the content and dismissed it as "I don't need this, I'm awesome" or C) thought that the video was too long and thought "give me the 10 tips already..."
I don't know what it is about Tim... He plays so clean. Every note he frets and string he hits is clear to the eye and the ear. He's a genius on the guitar, but watching him play and hearing his instruction, makes me think I can actually be as good as him, and he speaks to us like he believes we can too. I guess that's what it is about Tim...
Man I was just having the opposite reaction... I've "played" guitar for over 50 years and at 68 I was just thinking I will never be able to do these things.
Tim is like a Merlin figure. He was hidden yet always there, metaphorically waiting for the day we matured enough to appreciate his wisdom and the lessons of his exploits. I can't deny that my playing and attitude towards playing have changed for the better. I ultimately did it although, you more than helped to reignite that fire and sense of wonder I felt when I first held a guitar. For that you have my gratitude, my thanks and my undivided attention anytime I see a Tim Pierce Guitar video lol. I see how awesome you are not just as a musician, but as my fellow Man. Thank you again!
Hi Tim as a lifelong professional guitarist and composer seeing you in your session work recently i was actually impressed with your playing you put your heart into it. As i do with all my recordings and live shows. Hats off to you brother.
I don't think I've ever watched an instruction video where I hung on every damn word you said and grasped every damn thing you did. Thank you. I am subscribed now and I'm off and running with whatever you've got to teach.
Tim, I've just started watching your stuff. I'm nowhere near your capabilities guitar-wise, but I find your kind-hearted, honest, egoless take on everything to be very inspirational. Thank you so much.
That was well said! Same for me Tim! Your sense of pure joy playing your PRS and your humbleness and zero ego is so inspiring! It reminds me there are so many jerks in this world and how nice it is to listen to a kind hearted soul. Thank you 🙏🏼

The reason I like this channel is this guy isn't trying to show people how to play like Malmsteen or Gambele. He's simply trying to show guitarists how to be useful and how to be capable. Thats what sets him apart and thats why I view him as valuable.
@Cool Story Bro Actually that's just old school tutelage. Some explain theory "in much better ways" but are inaccurate and unusable. They just sound like they make sense.
@Cool Story Bro have you seen his (Beato) video on theory ever muscian needs to know"? I guarantee you half the famous rock and blues guitarist dont "know or at least understand " what he posted. Yet, they live it and play it everyday! Look at BB King (rip). He said: I just play!
I've been working in studios and on stages for over 40 years and I'm astonished to find out how little I know about the mechanics of playing the guitar, the the science of what makes a great rhythm part great and a thousand more aspects of my job that are described in beautiful detail in every video clip Tim Pierce bequeathes us. I'll walk away from this lesson and be cognizant of muting strings more so than I ever have before. Thanks so much for your always thoughtful and concise manner of teaching, Tim. You're a role model for every guitarist wishing to become better and your playing is always exquisitely soulful, thoughtful and freaking perfectly played!
39 years of playing for me and I can tell you this is golden advice to any gigging player -- all meat, no fluff. If you thumb down this you should immediately go sell all your gear and get an accordion. Plain & simple.
I come back to this just to hear the opening jam. To me that is soloing perfection. It raises my fur every time I listen to it! Love you Tim Pierce!❤️✌️🤘
I really enjoyed this Tim, thank you. I am 70 years old, started playing guitar at age 10. To begin with I was self taught using instruction books, so I learned the old style barre chord method using the index finger to clamp across all the strings. Like yourself, I only had 45's and a record player to somehow try to apply the chord charts As you demonstrate, the only way to do this comfortably is to wear the guitar high up on the chest....not so cool as those low slung rockers of the 60's and today. It is what it is, like you I have smaller hands and one has to learn how to compensate. I took lessons for many years once I got hooked on the instrument. I am a lifer on guitar, my first paid gig was at 18...I am still gigging as I write this. So once again Tim, my thanks for all that you do.
Love this: "I'm also playing very light because.. paradoxically, the biggest tones come from hitting the guitar lightly and letting the amp and the gain *bloom* from it." - Tim Pierce
From the first notes I heard you play...which was on a Rick Beato feature...my immediate impression was that I had never heard a player of ANY instrument play with such confidence and precision. This presentation goes a long way toward showing HOW you do it. Really amazing.
I have loved your setup from the first I saw it. "Let me turn me down and the drums up". Drops right hand, minor turn, 6 inches back, minor turn, plays on. AWESOME. You are the MAN
It's amazing that guitarist can commuicate at all considering all the different adverds, adjective, weird-verbs, and so on that is said to describe a sound, action.... you get it?

Tim you are truly an amasing guy and musician. Thank you so much for all that you share, whether it is just getting down with your bad self or passing on your knowledge from sensitive to rocking out, and everything in between. Hopefully not too much for you, but you are the greatest guitarist I have ever seen and heard. That you pass that on to us and open up our own musicianship in playing the guitar with such humble authority and experience leaves me in awe. You are my adopted master.
You have without a doubt become my favorite guitarist after discovering you this past year and your ability to teach is light years above most. Every video is just such an enjoyable experience even if you're not teaching something. But this last month I started watching 1 new video of yours every night and then REALLY spending hours absorbing what you're throwing down and focusing on the finer aspects of your playing. Needless to say my playing has advanced light years and my vibrato has gone from being a randomish accent at times to developing into a fully musical expression where every nuance matters every time. Thanks brother. Apparently the guitar hero isn't a dead genre after all. Keep em coming. You've really helped me up my game.
When Tim stated, "Pick as if you are speaking a sentence" peaks/valleys, hard/soft, but with confidence when soloing, the lightbulb went on...Tim, Peter Frampton, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Gilmour, and check out Mick Taylor/Rory Gallagher. Their touch is like a painters brush with emotion & feel when playing...Tx again to Tim👍🎶🎵🎼👌❤
Great information simply presented! I am forever telling people “play in time, and vary your dynamics”. They don’t always do it, but at least they get the idea. When I tell people that I play every note hard, especially the soft ones, I get blank looks. I am going to steal your excellent explanation. Which is appropriate, as I’ve stolen every every guitar idea I’ve ever had.
I have been playing since the age of 3 and I've been to Musicians Institute and played with some of the best on the planet, but you really really really make me rethink my playing every time I watch your videos. Thank you so very much!!!
Playing always with sincere feeling and locking into the drummer is how I've been playing for decades. It's satisfying to hear you, such an accomplished musician, corroborate that this is something we ought to do. I remember before I understood about muting and was so frustrated with how "dirty" my sound was. I just practiced and practiced to make it better(there were no YT vids or any kind of professional instruction for rock electric guitar in those days) until I think I accidentally muted a string, and lo and behold, it didn't ring out and the note I wanted to play was clean. Halleluya! That medium/slow tempo pocket playing is what the Rolling Stones are all about. They have a symbiotic sense of each other when it comes to groove, tempo, and such. Many years ago I realized that I might prevent carpal tunnel and that kind of thing if my wrist was not bent too much when I played. I ended up shortening my strap and raising my guitar to my chest. Sure enough, my wrist was much flatter in all positions. The other guitarist in my band played his guitar at his waist and was having wrist problems. He saw what I was doing, asked me why, and then did the same. It really works. Thanks, Tim for a great, informative vid, one of the best I've seen. Cheers, mate.
Maaaaaan, I love these videos. There's not many musicians akin to Tom Pierce that give information as insightful and time tested away, for free, to whomever is looking for it. Respect.
Once again Tim, fantastic tips for us players who all too often get caught up in only the notes on the neck and disregard right hand picking dynamics which is , as Joe Walsh says, where the real feel comes from.
Tim, this is the best video by anyone in a long, long time. It clarified so many things, that I’ve been wondering about for the longest time. You know, “I feel this is the way to do such and such, but am I, in fact, right?”. This confirmed so many things for me. I can develop and refine a number of things, now. So, thank you 😊
@@timpierceguitar I'm laying in bed watching. Today I broke 4 strings so that wiped me out. Lucky I have 3 or 4 guitars strung up. New strings be her 2 days. Well my fingers are cut and bleeding so break time. You make me want to play more. Guys listen he is spot on. Wisdom and he is shareing secrets that take decades.
Tim, just wow! Thank you so, so, much for sharing your knowledge and insights! It is really amazing to be able to learn from your vast years of experience and skill. Again, thank you so much!
The opening line is great, and the fleet-fingered section that follows hops modes as the chord changes happen - really colorful - perks your ears up on every bar! Nice!
Reading these comments shows the guitar playing viewership watching Tim Pierce is, like Tim, way above the talent and sophistication of most guitarists. Great company to be in! l'll practice harder.
This guy is so freaking tasteful I remember watching him play guitar for rick Springfield on a t.v. concert He also played the solo on lil runaway for bon Jovi That ain't sambora on the record folks That's tim He is the man !!
Muting really is such a big deal. Maybe one of the big surprises for beginners learning guitar is that you constantly have to deal with what you don't play as well as what you play.
I'm always so happy just to see that Hiwatt behind you. I'm always called an old guy because I'm still playing through mine...Makes me feel old..... Good stuff as always Tim.. thanks buddy!
That PRS is a beauty! I have a 20’th anniversary McCarty and as far as guitars go it’s the most wonderful thing ever. Today, i’ve got some older American Strats, a Strat Elite, a couple custom made guitars, and a 1999 LP Standard. PRS outclasses all of them. I love them all but it’s literally my go to and the one I know without question it’s the guitar that will never go out of tune, it’s intonation is rock solid everywhere on the neck and the tonal possibilities go for days and days. I’ve always seen you playing mostly a (looks to be) custom made Strat. I’m really excited about the PRS lol. I hope a million people buy one now because they heard and saw you playing one:). Your lessons are amazing and very helpful to me. Thank you for this
Amazing tips, Tim! I especially love how you focused so much on locking in with the snare and string muting. I do a lot of high gain and fuzz stuff with presets changing for each song, so muting is essential. Keep up the good work!
Man what a wonderful , valuable, video, so much great information, you talk about things Ive never heard anybody address before, when your standing in front of two Marshall stacks there is a lot of physical, not playing but controlling the beast behind you, muting, volume control, and as you said not letting any of the other sounds the guitar makes getting through unless you want them too. I love your playing and style, I have gained another guitarist that I will learn from, I've been playing for close to 40 years but its never to late to learn from a great player!! Thank you! And the people who gave thumbs down, They just don't "Get it"!!!
Mr. Pierce thank you for generously sharing your wealth of guitar knowledge. When I click on any of your posts, I always know that I am about to be enlightened. It’s good to see someone enjoying playing and helping others at the same time. Keep on keepin on! Respect from Tupelo, Mississippi...Birthplace of “Elvis” man !😎🎸
Thanks Tim, I like tips and tricks lessons sometimes even if there are no specific riffs or note instruction or special words to describe things, there is a lot to learn just listening as you wade through all of it, seems like we all are trying to discover that famous lead note progression and get it perfect that we forget the emotional details that music is suppose to convey. great stuff , again thank you so much for spending your time to help us . J-J
The tips Tim is sharing are some of the most important, yet often ignored, aspects of playing guitar. The thumbs down people most likely lack experience or love for playing guitar... or possibly think guitar is more important than the music itself. Thank you for sharing your tips in such a clear way Tim. Keep sharing for the sake of guitar players everywhere. Oh, hey, if someone gave this a thumbs down for a valid reason, I'd love to hear it.
You're such a pleasant man! Can I put you in my pocket and carry you around with me through my day. It's REALLY hard to stay crabby when you're around that type of positive energy.
Tim, your tone is simply the greatest. Not just the gear and settings, but your touch and picking dynamics. Your lessons are always enjoyable and helpful. Humble thanks.
Like others said, your talent, delivery, tastefulness are killer, thanks for this! I'm amazed even one person gave a thumbs down! Maybe they didn't like the new curtains?? I'll even give the curtains a big thumbs UP! Very cool, man! No wonder people want your playing on their tracks!
As a 54-yr old who is an "advanced " beginner, I don't even know why I watched this entire video. Maybe just to see what really playing the guitar looks like.
I hear you! I watch this stuff in the hope that eventually some fragment will be absorbed to return should I get to a point where I can make use of it. That, and I enjoy watching someone who knows what they are doing doing it. Like Johnny Marr's lesson for Fender on the Headmaster Ritual. No amount of watching that video is going to teach me to play it like Marr - but geeze it's fun to watch and try!
I am growing so much from applying the abundance of info from channels such as Tims'! Dialing in the sweet spot on my Super Leads check. Using effects pedals ( by dialing in the sweet spot that works with my amps ) to get the best sounds from my amps check. Using different gauges of picks for tone and usefulness in technique check. Playing in the pocket, and not rushing or playing behind the snare when not desired lol (with my band's drummer ) check. Playing with dynamics check. And on and on. It is great having so much free info. Just don't fall into the trap of worshipping other's who are great at whatever they do, and wanting other's to praise/ worship yourself! Give Jesus all the glory!
Man, Tim! You really shredd! But in a sophisticated, grown up kinda way! This is the stuff of the Elite! Your unassuming delivery is next level Jedi kinda stuff! ... (bows down low to the ground)
Yes, playing a "clean" phrase, not talking gain, requires full muting of all the other strings- Some of my favorite Page licks are just the little subtle in-between sounds- perfect example is on the "Nobody's Fault but Mine" guitar solo, about 1/3 thru the solo theres a stop sound between phrases that is so cool...You da man Tim,thanks for filling in all the blanks!!
Nice tips about all the subtle stuff no one really talks about. Just today I came back to some slide work and really took notice of using my right hand to muffle my picking between notes. The technique allowed me to focus on position changes with the slide without the changes in fret position becoming an unwanted artifact. I guess I'm always learning, just got to be mindful of what I'm doing and how to achieve what I want.
What is super fun for me, is that every detail you're sharing with us, I've been sharing with my students for years. At times, I felt like an isolated guitar dork, so I appreciate hearing you dive all the way into the minutia of technique and tone.
Has Tim mentioned what pickups he has in the PRS in this video? The neck pick up sounds so Strat like just slightly beefier (which I love and am looking for), and I’d love to get them to replace my current 85/15s in my CE24
In 1971 ,when I took up guitar, I had to strain to watch Freddie King on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert or various artists on The Midnight Special TV shows to try to figure out what the heck they were doing. Videos such as this are so valuable to new players.
Rule number one is SO GOOD, so true... especially bending strings.. I notice beginning students bend notes wimpy.. it's like the trademark of a novice. Bend those notes like your life depends on it.. no wimpy bends, I always think about your rules when onstage,in a session, making videos.. u rule, thx
I’m an upper intermediate player for over 40 years. I’ve played some sessions and toured minimally over that period. Tim’s videos are foundational at any level of playing. You young guns, lay the guitar down for a few minutes and listen to a well seasoned pro and LEARN! Thanks Tim
Late to the game here. Wow Tim, what sweet runs. That’s what separates the pros from the Joe’s. Thanks for all you do for the guitar community. It gives us 50+ guys a little boost.
Easily one of the best guitar how-to videos I’ve seen on TH-cam. I’m from the old-school, or The Era of Fretboard Secrecy, so these gems are a treat for me.
What a wonderful masterclass from a stone cold professional willing to share his hard earned wisdom. After decades of playing strictly acoustic guitar, this spring I will take a huge leap of faith at age 70 and get my first semi-hollow body ES-335 12 string custom DIY electric guitar. Thanks for the nuances that will help me get the tone and sounds I need in the studio TP!

Maaaaaan, I love these videos. There's not many musicians akin to Tom Pierce that give information as insightful and time tested away, for free, to whomever is looking for it. Respect.
This is good stuff! 👌👌
Once again Tim, fantastic tips for us players who all too often get caught up in only the notes on the neck and disregard right hand picking dynamics which is , as Joe Walsh says, where the real feel comes from.
Absolutely brilliant! Love Tim, love his playing! Wish I was able to play have as good.
Tim, this is the best video by anyone in a long, long time. It clarified so many things, that I’ve been wondering about for the longest time. You know, “I feel this is the way to do such and such, but am I, in fact, right?”. This confirmed so many things for me. I can develop and refine a number of things, now. So, thank you 😊
Thank you for the great comment :)
Exactly my feeling.
this video answers so many questions that I ask myself.
Thanks so much mister Tim.
I just came across this video a second time (4 years later) and it really spoke to me this time - I was ready for it - 4 years ago not so much.
Absolutely excellent advice Mr. Pierce. You are a true professional. Thank you so kindly.
Awesome tips Tim, also, fist bump to the wife, those curtains really tie the room together!
Play with intent - every note has motivation behind it, every note has purpose.
You are always impressive no way matter what you play. It amazes me.
i absolutely love your lessons! i wish i found someone like you 45 years ago.....
@kbaron007, so does Tim.
I thought I was only 5 min in, then it was suddenly over! Time flies when you listen to this guy ...
Man I love listening to this guy play guitar! Thanks Tim
This guy is so freaking tasteful
I remember watching him play guitar for rick Springfield on a t.v. concert
He also played the solo on lil runaway for bon Jovi
That ain't sambora on the record folks
That's tim
He is the man !!
Muting really is such a big deal. Maybe one of the big surprises for beginners learning guitar is that you constantly have to deal with what you don't play as well as what you play.
I always say Tim is the best at teaching technique. Perfect demonstration of that here. Brilliant!
FEEL the part, and not just play it. So simple, yet so important. Great stuff.
I liked his “desirable mistake” at 11:06. He’s like the Bob Ross of guitar. He doesn’t make mistakes, he has happy accidents.
I am a drummer but, love everything you do. My youngest daughter is just starting guitar.Want her to watch everything. The info is priceless!
I'm always so happy just to see that Hiwatt behind you. I'm always called an old guy because I'm still playing through mine...Makes me feel old.....
Good stuff as always Tim.. thanks buddy!
Blaydrnnnr thé hiwatt at a certain time was the amplifier that every one played . But even today you will be hard pressed to find a better amp .
The arpeggio action is wonderful
There is a treasure trove of great playing to experience here.
I can just watch you phrase forever. I kinda thought I could play, but you own it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm inspired.
Tim excellent lesson and amazing playing as always. Thanks for sharing this with everyone.
Man what a wonderful , valuable, video, so much great information, you talk about things Ive never heard anybody address before, when your standing in front of two Marshall stacks
there is a lot of physical, not playing but controlling the beast behind you, muting, volume control, and as you said not letting any of the other sounds the guitar makes getting through unless you want them too.
I love your playing and style, I have gained another guitarist that I will learn from, I've been playing for close to 40 years but its never to late to learn from a great player!! Thank you!
And the people who gave thumbs down, They just don't "Get it"!!!
One of the best guitar players i've ever heard... thank you so much for this...
With nearly 250,000 views (right now) you're bound to get a few of those!
You're such a pleasant man! Can I put you in my pocket and carry you around with me through my day. It's REALLY hard to stay crabby when you're around that type of positive energy.
The playing and tone in this video is absolutely masterful.
Jeepers, that intro was low key spectacular. Fantastic tips. You're one of the few guitarists I'd love to hear cover Joe Walsh's 'Walk Away'.
eJacob Cornelius thought I was the only one using jeepers.
Curtain envy
Exactly
No one ever believed me that a slower pocket is a harder pocket
Nice stuff Tim
As a 54-yr old who is an "advanced " beginner, I don't even know why I watched this entire video. Maybe just to see what really playing the guitar looks like.
Same here. Tim is a master of the guitar. It's a pleasure to see a master at work and sharing some of his secrets to success.
Ditto on OP.
I've been playing over 40 years...believe me when I say I feel the same way you do...
Revealed in this video - the name of Tim's new band. Tim Pierce's Rhythm Authority.
Loved it.
Great stuff Tim!
Man, Tim! You really shredd! But in a sophisticated, grown up kinda way! This is the stuff of the Elite! Your unassuming delivery is next level Jedi kinda stuff! ... (bows down low to the ground)
Yes, playing a "clean" phrase, not talking gain, requires full muting of all the other strings- Some of my favorite Page licks are just the little subtle in-between sounds- perfect example is on the "Nobody's Fault but Mine" guitar solo, about 1/3 thru the solo theres a stop sound between phrases that is so cool...You da man Tim,thanks for filling
in all the blanks!!
Hey Tim - Great video, super good tips. If possible, can you do a video on how you develop the muting into "second nature"?
This is priceless! I am no guitar player but your lesson applies to every instrument and all aspects of life. Thanks, master!
the dudes a mind grenade wealth of generous advice. can't get enough 'em. best subscribe I ever done did! lol!
Very nicely stated. Thanks Brooke and I hope to get 👊
Sorry typo: ending Thanks John.
What is super fun for me, is that every detail you're sharing with us, I've been sharing with my students for years. At times, I felt like an isolated guitar dork, so I appreciate hearing you dive all the way into the minutia of technique and tone.
Thank you so much for this great comment yeah I feel like a dork too ha ha
Has Tim mentioned what pickups he has in the PRS in this video? The neck pick up sounds so Strat like just slightly beefier (which I love and am looking for), and I’d love to get them to replace my current 85/15s in my CE24
You’re a legend Tim!! Thanks always for sharing your wealth of knowledge with the world and your amazing talent!!
Bend those notes like your life depends on it.. no wimpy bends, I always think about your rules when onstage,in a session, making videos.. u rule, thx
In many ways, we knew Tim's voice way before reaching his channel. Magical.
I’m an upper intermediate player for over 40 years. I’ve played some sessions and toured minimally over that period. Tim’s videos are foundational at any level of playing. You young guns, lay the guitar down for a few minutes and listen to a well seasoned pro and LEARN! Thanks Tim
Ok
Late to the game here. Wow Tim, what sweet runs. That’s what separates the pros from the Joe’s.
Thanks for all you do for the guitar community. It gives us 50+ guys a little boost.
Man, you're really great. That precision...
Hi to all we we it up no mk
I watch this now and then, when it pops up and still it teaches me and reminds me - thx, man!
Of all the wisdom Tim graces us with, perhaps his greatest accomplishment is that he really makes you wanna PLAY!!! Hats off, Mr. Pierce!
Easily one of the best guitar how-to videos I’ve seen on TH-cam. I’m from the old-school, or The Era of Fretboard Secrecy, so these gems are a treat for me.
thank you for this lesson
What a wonderful masterclass from a stone cold professional willing to share his hard earned wisdom. After decades of playing strictly acoustic guitar, this spring I will take a huge leap of faith at age 70 and get my first semi-hollow body ES-335 12 string custom DIY electric guitar. Thanks for the nuances that will help me get the tone and sounds I need in the studio TP!
