Oscar was one of the most talented guys ever. He had perfect pitch and a photographic memory, which certainly helps, but he also had the most incredible swing and blues feel of any jazz pianist. Combine that with his incredible technique, and you have the greatest swing pianist ever lived. About the tutorial. Great job! Tip: I think you get hung up a little bit too much with explaining his blues licks with blues scales. You say he mixes the minor and major blues scale on these two notes, etc.. He simply uses blue notes. Done. Keep swingin', man. You are a great player yourself!

So I'm a guitar player who plays piano as a secondary instrument. These tutorials are help my perspective as a guitar player. My question is: When can I buy a Johnny CD or Johnny performances on iTunes. Not only is Johnny a great player, he's a great teacher, and his positive attitude in this age of polarization is a welcome relief.

There's some very good content here. Note how the right hand keeps switching between single notes and well spaced pairs of notes. This creates the tension and sympathetic vibration (kind of exponential: 1x1=1, but 2x2=4) which are so essential in a robust blues piano performance. Yep, this is the real thing!

Hey Jonny! Canada has blessed us with two of the greatest musicians in my memory. Oscar Petersen is a name I grew up with and Glenn Gould is the artist my wife introduced me to. I regard these two as my standards for Jazz and Classical. Why both? Because you have to know the rules in order to break them and the joy is in the ability to play both really well. I'm looking at you now Keith Jarrett. I would like to see more videos on how to play like Art Tatum (who people used to think were two different people playing), Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, and Bill Evans. Love your work and willingness to share! Cheers!

Monk would be awesome. I might even go out and buy a piano for that. Haven't played for decades but miss it mightily. Never could play jazz but Jonny makes it seem as though regular people could approach it. I actually know better but it's nice to dream.

I have a doubt: Oscar thinks in chord changes on a blues progression? I mean, playing on key of F, when he plays Bb(IV chord) or C (V chord), he plays Bb or C major blues scale or minor blues scale instead C blues scales for all chords?

If you want to amaze yourself listen Art Tatum. The guy was blind and lot of Peterson work came from Tatum.
