No spinning stuff. I like 5500 or 6500 penn slammer or battle spinning setups for flyline because you can cast farther and the baitfish isn't pulling the whole spool of line to swim. You have to have some muscles for spinning setups and can't lean the rod on the rail, but I prefer it for sure.
You need to try out the daiwa lineup Certate sw , Caldia SW , or BG SW the size 10,000- 18000 are about the size of the 8500 slammer , so lighter and the reels feel smoother on the load
I used my Saragosa 25K last weekend out of Point Loma and we scored 76 YFT. Spinning definitely had the advantage of casting further, but the torque/drag might be a disadvantage when compared to two-speeds.
They picked the 4 biggest brands that are found in tackle shops and have good support. Gomexus is still kind of an off brand / no name and is not found in many tackle shops.
I second the Shimano Torium series reels. They are excellent for the price & cast very well. l have caught lots of yellowtail & school size bluefin tuna with zero issues. Regular maintenance & freshwater washdowns after use keep my Shimano's going strong.
Braid floats. You can have braid as a backing with several yards of mono with like four feet of floro as your leader. The difference is that your bait will typically swim deeper.
seeker tac80 with a trinidad 16 - cast 5-10 feet past everyone and get bit way more. not a cheap setup but worth it. best 25/30lb setup imo. 40lb braid to 25ft of fluoro with an FG knot as connection.
We’ve experienced such a delay in getting those shipped to us. We’ve ordered a number of them to do a video, but they’re very difficult to get a hold of apparently! Video coming as soon as we can get the materials 😊
i miss you guys damn it why cant she want to move to SD lol love ya steve. also ive never seen nate dawg fish the bait haha. ill see you in oct for the cartel charter with chuy and edwin
Just found this channel and recently bought a Shimano speed master 8 II can you recommend some poles maybe something that’s versatile and at a budget price point from 100-180. also from socal 🤟🏾
Accurate tern2 all sizes come in lefty I feel it's a step up from a torium. Toriums come in a 16,20, and 30 size. Really, it's the same size spool, just wider. I love my daiwa lexa HD 401 holds 250 yards of 65# maxcuatro
I got. 7’8 grafteck rated for 30 40 lbs and I slapped 40 lb braid to it. I liked the cal stars and the seekers but the price on this rod was unreal. You think that’ll work?
@@bojacksonsuperturtle7411 yeah for fish up to like 40lbs. You gotta understand that the big fish gear is expensive because it's designed to handle the big ones. My biggest I got on a kite rod with a talica 25. But I've slayed bluefin with a penn senator 4/0 and a glass baitstick back in the early 2000s. Don't read too much into it. Make sure your knots are on point.
O.K. folks I am 65 yrs old . Been in so call sport boat , pier , surf , fishing since I was 6yrs old . As well as every other form of sport fishing . My question is why does no one speak of cal-star rods anymore ? I sort of know how saber , "fell" to call star more or less . Then seeker came on in similar fashion . I think . But can someone lay down the details/history for me . I would appreciate it .
I mean if ur gonna recommend reels that are up to the $500 price range might as well show the quality stuff. I mean if ur gonna drop more than $300+ on a reel you need to do ur homework n make sure ur making a good purchase. Show em the Avets, and Accurates. Maxel reels. Why not Gomexus? Their up with ANY of these brands in quality and for under $300.
Good stuff guys….. sorry to say, but I don’t consider any of these reels as “starter reels”. Of course you can go top tier with any manufacturer, but there are many “starter reels” that you don’t and probably should not promote or carry. I only say this so that folks that are new do not feel they have to spend top tier money to get a good reel.
Man, if I got a dollar everytime some guy on the sportboats told me I couldn't cast further because of a levelwind. I'd have a whole rental rod rack ready to go😂

Forget the spinning stuff, no GOMEXUS REELS??

Fantastic job and report on what rods and reels and setups to use Steve and nate ,great information, tight lines to both of ya , 😅😅😅😅
Tight lines to you as well!
See you again next month 🎣 . Thanks for the decent trip capt and crews plus good foods 🎉
Pare! Andrew! what boat did you go on with these guys?
@@jaimefernandez3076 legend pre. I love this boat 🛥️ since 2010
No Avet, I think it would be a good idea if y’all included the SX raptor, and the MLX raptor.

Great duo. Lots of good information. Hope someone will benefit .

Great work guys 👍
Your videos are great. Thank you!
Thank you! So glad you like them!
Great info, gonna try circle hooks next trip

I fish My tac 80 with a penn fathom 25n. 50lb braid to 30lb fluro. Bluefin and yellowtail in the school size never had a chance.
Great video! Do you think you could make a video talking about Fly line Gear and Setups for bigger grade fish?
Definitely!
Tough to beat the Avet JX 6/3 on a Shimano trevala or Phenix rail rod
Okuma Alijos 2 speed has a cast control
Can you do a video on the Left handed reels out there. We are always “Left” out. Lol. Also, the Okuma Cavalla
We’ve experienced such a delay in getting those shipped to us. We’ve ordered a number of them to do a video, but they’re very difficult to get a hold of apparently! Video coming as soon as we can get the materials 😊
Thank you. Great videos!!! Tell them Left handed people fish too!! Lol
Reel Kustom Reels can mono mag some of those lever drag reels.
i miss you guys damn it why cant she want to move to SD lol love ya steve. also ive never seen nate dawg fish the bait haha. ill see you in oct for the cartel charter with chuy and edwin
Doesn't Avet sell MC models of their level drag reels?
Keep these videos coming
Woo!

also is that a mullet capt? if so flippin fire brah
I have an avet sjx with 50 lb braid paired with a dark matter rated 15 to 40 lb i use for dodo/yellow tail. Would that work for flylining bluefin?
That’s a set up that can prob handle up to 40lb fish, anything more & you might be struggling more than having fun
@@FishTheLegend thanks for the info
do you think a 7ft 30-60 pound rod would work for fly lining yellowtail and tuna?
Absolutely if that’s the rating!
No Shimano Trinidad, Speedmaster, or Talica?
Good info.
Awesome!
What star drag reels would you recommend for left-handed night jigging? or what reel would be suitable for casting that is also left-handed?

Yeah I wasn’t getting hit on the 40 lbs leader .
My brothers and his 10 year old
Kept getting bit on the 30lbs leader
It’s good to have options on the trip for just that reason!
There’s a lot of people fishing braid on sport boats that should be using mono
i recall a raffle when i was on a boat this season. what trip was the raffle for?
3 day on 11/2!
For a 20-25 lb set up for school size tuna Tesoro 10 or 5s?
You can use the 5 but the 10 might be more versatile if you get into bigger fish
Is 300 yards of line enough for a 25lb fly line setup?
Yep!
I notice you guys don't seem to recommend Phenix rods, are you guys not fans?
We were limited to what the tackle shop could provide at the time
Alijos 5nii compairson for future vids
I’ve got a sea gate 30h can I fly line that? And what straight rod should I use😊
I'd get a 7ft to 8ft baitstick. Calstar 270h 8 ft or a seeker 6480. The glass tips will be more forgiving.
I got. 7’8 grafteck rated for 30 40 lbs and I slapped 40 lb braid to it. I liked the cal stars and the seekers but the price on this rod was unreal. You think that’ll work?

FTH25N, TOR16, TRIN16 are all the same weight [19 oz.]
The fathom 25n has better freespool and power gears. I use mine for 30lb flyline on a seeker tac 80.
Cool
but i want the blank rods to biuld yall
I have new reel makaira 15T ii silver 500 yard 80 lbs maxcuatro this is god for jigin tuna ?
Should work just fine!
Fishing rod recomended For this reel
Any of the rods in our rail rod video! 😊 lots of options there
Ok gracias

Cal star doesn't produce as many rods as they used to, so they're more difficult to get and more expensive because of that. They're great rods though!
I never allow the bait to pull line off my reel, I feed line to bait as it swims away from the boat, that will give bait a better natural presentation
Avet raptor
That was a $1,500 boat owned rod the guy tossed on the deck. If I were the boat owner, I wouldn't allow that guy back on my boat again.
Go mono to fluro and leave the braid off. Mono has less drag than braid for the fish to swim down

How does the 8030 compare to the calstar 800m?
8030 supposedly built on shikari mandrel like the tac series. It's a thinner blank. But on par with the g 6480.
Oh and the 800m has more graphite in my opinion
