This is way too complicated with the app grid and App Store. All you need is iDrive 7’s hardware buttons + Apple CarPlay. Much better UI and updates year over year without buying a new car.
I'm just glad i held off ordering the baby M (M2) just in case more colours will be available and now, looks like iDrive is also getting updated AGAIN 😗

This OS9 story is a disgraceful case of BMW mismanagement. All new series XI's since Autumn 2022 have been and are still being produced with hardware -Headunit- that cannot be upgraded to accommodate OS9. All X1s sold since Autumn 2022 until the day sometime in 2023 when the new Headunit enters the production line will lose substantial value overnight. Back in January at Las Vegas show, BMW announced cars would be fitted with the new hardware sometime after March 2023. In March 2023, they said it would be November 2023. I have an iX1 on order (in Germany) and have been refused any information (on multiple occasions in April 2023) by BMW HQ as to what the actual situation is. Yesterday I took the decision to cancel my order, but I am being told I will have to pay 15% of the purchase price (€62k - Price list €72k). This is below Tesla level of customer service. I should add, at the time of placing my iX1 order, the OS9 issue was part of the discussion with the dealer & the order put as far back as possible to get to early Q3/2023 delivery. At the time, with official statements BMW had made, this would have meant Headunit was OS9 compatible. If there had been no OS9 issue, I would have bought a new iX1 that the dealer had in stock in January.
Luckily I buy my BMWs for driving them and not watching videos inside. Looking at this comment, this seems to save me a lot of nerves and helps to live a better life while enjoying sheer driving pleasure, instead of being so frustrated that I have to comment about this on TH-cam😂
So will you cancel your order? Maybe by Q3 2023 it will come with the new hardware. And was that 15% cancellation fee mentioned in the contract? Otherwise it’s illegal and you don’t have to pay anything
Honestly? I hate it. I mean, I dont hate it as is but I hate the idea. There are models, that still dont even have Idrive 8. x3 for example, and now ppl wait with ordering x3 because they dont want to have brand new car - and 2 months after receiveing it someone gets inside and say "oh, you have that old one?" O_O
@@tomkaidl os8 is already in : BMW 2, 3LCI, 7, iX1, i4, iX, XM, X1, X5LCI, X6LCI, X7LCi so clearly they aim to put in everywhere - yet already trying to push out marketing for 8,5 and also even talking about os9... crazy
The coming few years for the auto industry will be interesting. With more EV models coming, next generation Carplay, companies like BMW and GM thinking they can develop better infotainment than Apple with zero track record.
Amazing that they have put these updates behind an artificial wall of hardware. This is nothing more than a UI optimization. The idea that a new head unit is required here is nothing short of legacy manufacturing mentality and has nothing to do with software. You can see it clear as day 8.5 is a UX rework on SOME elements of 8 and 9 is just 8.5 on new hardware. The idea that the customer has to buy cars with no support or upgrade paths even on brand new models like the iX, i7 and soon to be i5 will be stuck with obsolete software before its lunched thanks to BMWs moronic handling of software updates. Btw unlike every other manufacture they still cant handle route planning on there EVs in all regions either claiming the data set for the regions is not sufficient .. all the while all other manufactures can manage it. BMW amazing cars but there software mentality is right now utterly ridicules and made worse by a clear lack of forward thinking when it came to the hardware selection.
I’ve been thinking this for a long time. My new car will have the mgu 5 with 8.5. But the older mgu 4’ will be updated too. this could be one big hardware scam though and no one would have known 😂
@@bmwblog So we now have iDrive 8 running on x86 platform that is powered by intel, but then we also have a "linux based OS " that again could be x86 ? and that is already defunct and iDrive essentially ends with 8.5 and Android Automotive (AAOS), that BMW brands as iDrive 9 is used going forward on cars after the i5 ? but the X1 gets iDrive 9 but is not AAOS based ! so in fact does not get iDrive 9 but some lite version ? So no real clear direction here if BMW is going down the (AAOS) route then why cant it be used on existing cars ? they keep claiming CPU this and that but the old cars are apparently Intel Atom ? guess what Polestar 2 is AAOS based running on Intel ? yes I am aware its not that simply but BMW is not been very upfront about why and id suspect this has more to do with BMW using outdated SOC on early cars And now there going to an ARM based processor ... sigh what a mess they built for themselves. All this in the space of what less than 2 years ? Way to totally fragment the line up in spectacular fashion. None of this is clear and all it has done is ensure that even there flagship cars like the i7 and soon to be i5 are outdated before customers even get them.

Ultimately everything should and will be apple carplay. I immediately engage apple carplay on any capable car. If that isnt a foreshadowing of the future then i dont know what is.
Unfortunately looks like a system from a lower end car brand. Looks like many of us will really miss iDrive 7 & 8. Screen and software looks responsive but the interface design seems like a computer game (in a bad way), visual design is (at least for me) very unappealing and the menu-within-menu style will be overwhelming for many users. Sad to see the direction of BMW infotainment system, which simply had no competition for so long.
You are spot on. It is so ugly, that I had to stop watching the video. The color scheme is totally inadequate for the task at hand. Kind of like Nokia vs iPhone. How difficult would it have been to copy what works (Tesla)? In Germany we simply cannot do software...
Agreed. And how are people supposed to use this while driving ? The current tile based v8 is nice because I can see my music, the map, and a big clock. With 8.5 seems we have to play with the screen while driving. Very “safe”.
I have the 2024 X1 m35 I with I drive 9 . I'm not enjoying my new car because most of the apps doesn't work on my car in Jamaica . It's unfair to pay so much yet get so little .
My X1 U11 in the UK was delivered with version 9 in June 2023 and lots of stuff not working. No guidance from BMW that this would be the case and now waiting for software upgrade. Seems like they installed the hardware to accommodate the software and then delivered a very poor experience in terms of functionality.
Sure, Drive recorder not working, sat nav augmented reality not working and BMW assistant help not available. My car was sent an update then it was withdrawn. Now wish I hadn’t accepted the car at handover.
How can they sell brand new cars like the new 2024 x5 and 2024 x6 and they only get 8.5 idrive then after that they stop getting any updates for the rest of the life of the vehicle, so in a few month and it’s already has an old idrive when idrive 9 comes out, this is ridiculous and will let people go somewhere else where they have more support for their brand new car
I think that's mainly because it was just a video which was not on a 1:1 screen scale judging by the thick borders. It is just cheap to present it that way.
I just got my car with idrive 9 and it is very bad ( very buggy, responds with delay, there is no more touch feedback like in 8/8.5, voice control does not work). I regret buying the car mainly because of it.
Thanks to Tesla. One System and ota Updates and Upgrades without that stupid new OS shit there you have to buy a complete new car to get actual updates etc

Visually there is no difference between 8.5 and 9.
8.5 doesnt let you access and watch video as you do in idrive 9. @bmwblog
