Indeed it should have been. Even the followup series "Space: 2099" I think it was seems to be blown from orbit to wander the universe never seen again.
@@CJ-rf9jm I have a quick and dirty concept for Space: 2099, where the Moon makes a 100 year orbit around Meta, already colonized by the former Alphans, and an up and growing civilization, where a group of archaeologists and students return to collect data from the computer along with historical relics, only to find another civilization (for, I dunno, reasons), latched a massive nuclear rocket to the back of the moon that kicks them again out of orbit, this time on a trajectory for Earth. So it's "Okay, we're about done.", then the rocket kicks in, and we're off!

Old memory... A classmate said he had a photo of Maya I could have, at a price (50p 'and' a used blank audiotape I think). Of course I paid. But then another so-called friend visiting the house one evening put a sticker that was lying around right in the middle of her face, ruining it. Removing the sticker left a white tattered rectangle. It led to an argument, a chase out into the garden and a fight. This is the kind emotional intensity Maya inspired back then.

I always hated seeing Eagles crash. After spending several days building an Eagle model as a child, I learned to appreciate how truly beautiful that utility craft was. Seeing them totaled by writers one after the next was sort of sad.
The first script called for two separate Eagle crashes into the lunar surface, so they built a miniature sturdy enough to withstand repeated takes of the FX shots without serious damage and still be ready for more. With a crash-worthy model on hand, later scripts called for more of that kind of visual excitement.

Being an old grizzled medic, this is still one of my all time fve sci fi series. Regularly watch season 1 again. The music, the style , the scripts , the sense of awe and yet terror of space , will always live on . And Dragons Domain terried me as a kid , still one of my favourite episodes along with The testament of Arkadia.
Happy 20th Anniversary of Space 1999! As I post this I realize that today is September 13th, 2019! Glad I watched this video today! I really enjoyed the show when I first saw it all those years ago, even the 2nd season, though I do like the 1st season much better.
My favourite scene was that drinking scene in the black sun/ black hole episode where the characters reconcile the existential angst of facing their own deaths.
I agree here, the relationship between Victor and Koenig was one of the best things for me. Reminds me a tiny bit of the whole Picard - Ryker relationship.
Maybe I'm rare in that I enjoy both seasons... Favourite episodes: Force of Life. I love David Tomblin's direction! Shows off the brilliant big sets. The Infernal Machine - great guest acting from Leo McKern and more Tomblin. Bringers of Wonder - It's wonderfully disturbing. End of Eternity - Balor is sooo creepy, brilliant performance from Peter Bowles.
When I was a kid I had the Mattel Eagle transporter & as a 53 year old guy I've got an assembled/painted model kit on my display shelf. Own DVD series as well!
'Dragons Domain' gave me reaccuring nightmares for years after as a child. 'Breakaway' will always be a classic and 'The Last Sunset' was a personal favourite... But I did love Maya in season 2 with 'Bringers of Wonder' being a great watch...
What I love about your commentary is how you aren't scared to play up just how ridiculous the sets, concepts, and behind-the-camera-dramas actually were. Thanks for that.
Never took to the Second Season but I still consider Season One to be one of the greatest scifi shows of all time, I have it on DVD and still enjoy it as much as I did back in the day, that timpani roll leading into the titles takes me right back to Saturday nights in 1975. Magic!
Not to mention one of the best theme 'songs' in TV history. The first few bars alone of the season 1 theme are as epic as 2001 A Space Odysseys Also Sprach Zarathustra. I love it to this day and it send shivers down my spine. I can forgive the following decidedly disco music! Now the episodes I don't remember at all so its ripe for a rewatch, but the Dragons Domain one I remember vividly terrified me as a child. It was horrifying seeing a girl being dragged in screaming and spat back out as a desiccated skeleton. Almost as scary as the time my aunt let me watch Alien when she was babysitting me!
@HaB22 True that! Space 1999 had to rely on good story telling and great special effects. Buck Rogers had Erin Grey in Spandex and ....... I'm sure there was something else. Tigerman maybe?
I never thought about it before, but the robotic characters in season 2 of Buck Rogers.... it was like they were trying to copy CP3O and R2D2. The professor would be Obi Wan and Erin... Princess Leia. It just had that feel. With a dash of Love Boat mixed in.
Every serie from Anderson 's TV show was Great..... I miss that series... thudenderbird, UFO, space 1999, etc... you should make again at 2021 year!!!....👏👏👏👏👏
I much preferred the first season over the second season. The icing on the cake though would have been to keep the first season format and add Catherine Schell.
Loved this show as a kid, turned me into a real sci-fi fan. The theme tune for Season 1 is absolutely awesome and a couple of episodes scared the crap out of me, Dragons Domain and the one with Lovejoy in it 😁
I was only six years old when the show came out and became a favorite of mine. I seemed to have liked the first season more, but really didn't understand why, at the time, Prof. Bergman was gone and there was a sudden appearance of the new characters. What I do vividly remember is Dragon's Domain. I remember being in my sleeping bag and hiding my head underneath peering through the gaps in the zipper when I gained enough courage to look again.
One thing I've always loved about this show is that it really makes a fan think. Between the original premise, which is brilliant and the second season changes, the variety of characters and music and more make it a great show. Both seasons, every episode. Even when we say, hey that wouldn't happen...it's fun!
Space 1999 is a great show and I even loved season two! I think a reboot might be a great idea, if not then a story of whether the people of moonbase alpha actually found a new planet to call home or not.
Eddie: Zienia Merton reprised her role as data analyst Sandra Benes, for the short film 'Message from Moonbase Alpha.' This, considered the series final (49th) episode, debuted at the fan convention held in LA during the weekend of Breakaway (12/13/14 September 1999.)
Ewwww, "reboot", that has become such a dirty word. Anyway, modern Star Trek is not something I am interested in and neither would I be interested in modern Space: 1999.
Even as a 9-11 year old child - and an American child at that - I preferred the inexplicable and mysterious weirdness, dark atmospheric mood, introspection, and talkiness of the first season to the non-taxing Saturday afternoon action-adventure format Freiberger gave us in the second season. I was a weird kid.
Thank you for this wonderful little film. I adored Space : 1999 when it was first broadcast, and I still do. My most surreal memory? When 1999 actually arrived, and I bought the official Space : 1999 calendar for that year!
I was born in 73 and the series were broadcasted in 75 in Portugal. I remember loving both series, but maybe the first more, since big sudden changes are always strange. I liked Space 1999 more than Star Trek. The Eagles are one of the best space craft designs ever.
Wow!!! , As a little kid at the time over here in the states, The intro music was absolutely phenomenal , I had never heard anything of that caliber for a television show at the time, It blew my socks off, Not to mention that it was an awesome Science fiction show, The attention to details definitely grasped my mind and transported me into another universe for that Friday evening, Just so much fun, Awesome all the way around 👍 👽👽👽👽, My hats off to everyone involved in the production of the show, Peace out everyone 👍
Have not watched it myself but my mom loved Space 1999 (Or simply Moonbase Alpha as it was called here in Denmark) when it aired here. Though she just thought things like Automatic doors were like the most futuristic things ever. And look at the world now XD
As a teenager back in 70s it was series 2 as it fitted with the style back then. Now fast approaching 60 and ploughing through both series on Blu-ray and enjoy "darker" remakes it has to be series 1, however both are awesome in HD surround sound!
As an American, I would like to offer my deepest apologies. I've never seen season two, but season one is some of the best television that I have ever seen.
When it comes to SciFi "Resistance is futile" was first used in two British Series Doctor Who, "The Deadly Assassin", S14E9, 30 Oct 1976 Space: 1999, "The Dorcons", S02E24, 12 Nov 1977 It didn't reach the Star Trek universe until over a decade later Star Trek The Next Generation, "The Best of Both Worlds", S03E26, 16 June 1990 And it quickly became a central catchphrase amongst Trekkies, and today most people think it originated in Star Trek
Good and accurate description. Production flaws are more evident in the second season (goofy looking monsters, decor, landscape, etc.). I'm not happy about the disappearance of Professor Bergman in season 2, though I liked the Maya character (but didn't care about her fling with Tony). I was too young to realize it back then, but now you made me notice the dialogues and exchanges were also better in season 1.
I am this old... this is what inspired my live of scifi, that has never died. I even had a diecast model of an eagle one. lost to the annals of time in irresponsible childhood.
@@chriswalsh4738, no. Alien was inspried by a 50's B scifi film. Blanking on the name but it was about a ship landing on a planet, an alien getting on board picking off one person after another, and their using fire against it. Two women in the cast. I mentioned it to Veronica Cartwright once, she was really surprised by it.
I binge-watched the Series 1 DVD set a couple of years ago. I got to "Dragon's Den" and thought - nah, I'll wait until daylight tomorrow to watch that one. I am in my 50s and still remember being scared by that one, in a good way. I also have the "Mission of the Darians" Mutant! Clear! scene etched into my brain...

At 2.30...totally agree with you Alan Carter. A:) The Eagle was and still is my favourite spaceship. She was a beautiful bit of design. Also that bit about how many Eagles crashed had me in stitches. I used to try to keep count but couldn't keep track. They must have had an Eagle factory on the moon they lost that many of them. Lol!!!

Woooooooooooow! I was sitting here thinking that it was weird that I don't remember the show, but the second you showed the ship, I remembered I had a toy of it when I was 6-7 years old.
The first sci-fi show with super clear picture. 2001 A space odyssey quality. Combined with great special effects. All episodes have elements of thoughtfulness.
Dragons Domain was and will always be my favorite episode from my childhood. . I had a luke skywalker action figure that flew my eagle toy. I tied a cord over a tree branch and attacked it to the top of the eagle. Then pull the cord. Vertical takeoff achieved
Pour répondre à votre question: mon épisode préféré est "The testament of Arkadia".
The first season was my favourite they should really do a remake of this series, the theme tune is still used in various forms these days, great series a proper childhood favourite of mine 👊👊👊👍

I have to go with "The Last Enemy" as my fav episode. Nice twist of fate at the end and who could resist Caroline Mortimer in black leather as the hot alien commander Dione!
It was one of my favorite episode along with War Games, The Inferno Machine. The Dorcons and The Bringers of Wonder. The phrase "Resistance is Futile" was used 12 years later by The Borg in Star Trek TNG.
Fans seemed to prefer season 1 although still liked season 2 enough. It was still watchable. This isn't a Galactica situation where what would have been a second season was so bad they had to make it a follow up series.

"Dragon's Domain" is one of my all-time favorite SF MOVIES!
What I love about your commentary is how you aren't scared to play up just how ridiculous the sets, concepts, and behind-the-camera-dramas actually were. Thanks for that.
I still have my Space 1999 pencil case back when I was a kid.
b8702131 that is epic!
The first series was always my favourite, but loved both S1 & 2. The Big Finish audio stories are absolutely brilliant too. Highly recommended.
Very similar problem to Gil Gerard's Buck Rogers series. The two seasons are almost completely different themes and styles.
In both cases, The first season was better.
Yep. I have both series on DVD and I usually stop when I hit season 2.
I was just thinking the same thing
This deserves a reboot! Season one was the best. It is possible to combine action and intelligence.
Every serie from Anderson 's TV show was Great..... I miss that series... thudenderbird, UFO, space 1999, etc... you should make again at 2021 year!!!....👏👏👏👏👏
Though i never understood any of the dialogue since i was just a kid, i will never change this memories for the world..
I much preferred the first season over the second season. The icing on the cake though would have been to keep the first season format and add Catherine Schell.
Loved this show as a kid, turned me into a real sci-fi fan. The theme tune for Season 1 is absolutely awesome and a couple of episodes scared the crap out of me, Dragons Domain and the one with Lovejoy in it 😁
Beautifully edited and narrated. Brings back many memories. A show that was well ahead of it’s time.
Awesome series, 1 season is best, but I like both anyway
I was very young when it came out, born in 68 I wish this would be a reboot
Wow!!! ,
As a little kid at the time over here in the states,
The intro music was absolutely phenomenal ,
I had never heard anything of that caliber for a television show at the time,
It blew my socks off,
Not to mention that it was an awesome Science fiction show,
The attention to details definitely grasped my mind and transported me into another universe for that Friday evening,
Just so much fun,
Awesome all the way around 👍
👽👽👽👽,
My hats off to everyone involved in the production of the show,
Peace out everyone 👍
Season 1 - 'Breakaway' and 'Black Sun' - The best episodes :)
A crime that it did not have at least one more season and go back to first season sets and bring the cast back too. Mind blowing!
Space 1999 was my favorite show at the time, and recently I have been watching it again!
I remember the show, always a good after school time.
Now fast approaching 60 and ploughing through both series on Blu-ray and enjoy "darker" remakes it has to be series 1, however both are awesome in HD surround sound!
thanks for all the great T.V. shows, i love them all
Loved the show as a kid and even had a huge Eagle toy. I wish they'd do a remake, with today's CGI it'd be quite awesome.
I remember this when I was a kid I used to enjoy watching it.
If ITC American kept away from the show instead of interfering and demanding drastic and unnecessary changes we would of gotten a 3rd season
As an American, I would like to offer my deepest apologies. I've never seen season two, but season one is some of the best television that I have ever seen.
@@KlingonCaptain no need to apologize for being a American lol
the creators Gerry & Sylvia had a divorce so they stop the show
Maybe they were in fear of a show that would have been on par, ney I say above par with Star Trek.
Loved every episode -would love to see all Andersons hits redone with CGI
The character of actress Catherine Schell was the one that most marked me in this series.
"Resistance is futile" in 1976
I had to replay that a few times to see if that was a line or they just added as a voiceover.
That caught me by surprise too.
I was going to type the same thing. That's a very suspect coincidence I think.
When it comes to SciFi "Resistance is futile" was first used in two British Series
Doctor Who, "The Deadly Assassin", S14E9, 30 Oct 1976
Space: 1999, "The Dorcons", S02E24, 12 Nov 1977
It didn't reach the Star Trek universe until over a decade later
Star Trek The Next Generation, "The Best of Both Worlds", S03E26, 16 June 1990
And it quickly became a central catchphrase amongst Trekkies, and today most people think it originated in Star Trek
Before contacting the Borg!! LOL
Both series have just been shown on Forces TV 👍👍👍👍 ,season 1 definitely the best 👍👍👍👍
Loved the show. I wish I had kept my Eagle toy space craft complete with detachable cockpit and figures!
i just LOVE LOVE the Theme Song!!.. it is just so hauntingly good. Hearing that music brings back lots lots of memories...
0:23 moustached men in nylon going through plate glass windows was a regular occurrence in our local pubs around the time this series came out.
1999 looks awesome! I can’t wait for the future.
The blue print for the International Lunar Colony to go with the International Space Station.
I remember looking at the Moon through my binoculars on the night of September 13th 1999 and being mightily relieved that it was still there🤣😂.
Forgive me for saying this but I thoroughly enjoyed Year Two of the show, both as a little kid and now as a middle aged adult.
I am this old... this is what inspired my live of scifi, that has never died.
I even had a diecast model of an eagle one. lost to the annals of time in irresponsible childhood.
This needs a reboot
It just had an audio one... 😉😊
NAH!!! Need a NEW live one!!@@GerryAndersonTV
A reboot of season 2. Season 1 is fine as is.
No
One of my favorite Gerry anderson shows 🎄
Dragon's Domain: still scary.
it inspired alien in a way
@@chriswalsh4738 I slept with the light on for two weeks after that one!
Bonjour,
Season 1 and only season 1 !!! Favourite episode ? The Black Sun. Favourite scene ? the Eagle taking off ( reactor's sound !!! ) with the lunar dust flying everywhere !!
Lol!!!
Lost pilots as well. They probably had to keep training new pilots from the remaining population.
@@DocMicrowave I used to be a botanist, now I'm an Eagle pilot. I wonder if there is a pay raise involved. What do you mean we don't get paid?
@@markevans7551 Fly, or die. That's your reward. So keep up your agricultural work if you don't want to starve. And fly those eagles when we need you if like breathing air and having a bed to sleep on.
Everyone else pulling double duty as well so get with the program.
Your new co-pilot is the electrician/plumbers assistant.
Series 1 was more dramatic, spooky and lots of unknowns keep the viewers in suspense. 2 was more campy, some preachy episodes, but it made you feel closer to the crew. I miss the series, and like other sci-fi tv series you are left scratching you head wondering why did it end so soon. Heres to space 1999, a truly awesome sci-fi series!!
Barbra Bain's cool, soothing voice was always a distinct pleasure. I was getting mesmerized (via what's now called ASMR) as a teen watching a space adventure show on TV.
Ed Bishop's UFO & Martin Landau's Space 1999 would always be follow by millions of fans via Dvd , Bluray or Streaming Services from planet Earth 🌍 to the Outer Rim! May all good Actors & Fans of UFO & Space 1999 be united in a Better World & Realm in the near Future! Stay Safe & Stay Humble! 🕯🌷🕊🌍♥️🇬🇧🇺🇲
It may just be a coincidence, but as I'm watching this video, today, the Comet TV network is running this show in a marathon.
That was a great show! My 5yr old mates and I would disect every episode after watching it.
Space 1999 and U. F. O I haven't got a favourite between them as they are both fantastic. Even though Fred Burgers and Fries mucked about with the second series
Woooooooooooow! I was sitting here thinking that it was weird that I don't remember the show, but the second you showed the ship, I remembered I had a toy of it when I was 6-7 years old.
I was 10 when the first season was shown here in Sweden 1976. Still my favourite 2021.
Loved this show!
season one. even as a kid. I was 11 when it aired.
Fav season is 1, of course, but, still enjoyed the second for its differences, actually.
Space 19 99 the best next generation of the fan club fly out on the moon love you gerry Anderson
The first sci-fi show with super clear picture. 2001 A space odyssey quality. Combined with great special effects. All episodes have elements of thoughtfulness.
Season 2 is Like "Maya show"... In the 70' i love Maya :)
In 2019 i like season 1
Dragon's Domain was brilliant, and a brave departure storytelling wise with its lengthy flashback featuring none of the regular cast.
Dragon's Domain and Bringers of Wonder are my favourite episodes. Horror in space.
MYNEXTPHASE Dragons domain was always my favorite ep. i was born in 1970
Dragons Domain was and will always be my favorite episode from my childhood. . I had a luke skywalker action figure that flew my eagle toy. I tied a cord over a tree branch and attacked it to the top of the eagle. Then pull the cord. Vertical takeoff achieved
@@MonsterGrove That is AWESOME! :)
Pour répondre à votre question: mon épisode préféré est "The testament of Arkadia".
The first season was my favourite they should really do a remake of this series, the theme tune is still used in various forms these days, great series a proper childhood favourite of mine 👊👊👊👍
They are thinking of remaking this series but renaming it Space 2099? Won't be the same myself.
I remember the episode Dragons Domain scared the crap out of me as a kid. I had nightmares about that creature.
space 1999 una excelente serie. la veia en los años 78 y 79. no me perdia ningun capitulo. una serie fascinante. lastima que ya no la pasen en la television abierta ni en cable.
I always liked series 1. The "monsters" and Maya constantly changing into the same old things bored me. Though I always wanted an Eagle of my own
For the time I think it was ok, and also Maya was gorgeous! OMG!
+Gerry Anderson; today (13 September, 2019) is the 20th anniversary of the earth's moon - containing Moonbase Alpha - being blasted out of orbit
🌘🌗🌖🌑🌔🌒🌓.
Season 1 definitely! Favourite episodes A Matter of Life and Death,Dragon's Domain and The Troubled Spirit.Dragon's Domain has such a scary monster and the way they die too...EEK! A Matter of Life and Death,a paradise that has hidden dangers and The Troubled Spirit,a very chilling ghost story in space with great music throughout
Magnificently put together (you fellow Season 1 lover)!
Season 1 for sure, a nowadays theme with excelente actors. Can t forget the many design features introduced on this show, Joe Colombo and a lot of creators too etc...pure pleasure to see it till today
I'd forgot this episode its another of my faves.
In Sweden it was called "Månbas Alfa" = Moonbase Alpha. I was less than 10 years old and i liked it more than Star Trek.
Fans seemed to prefer season 1 although still liked season 2 enough. It was still watchable. This isn't a Galactica situation where what would have been a second season was so bad they had to make it a follow up series.
