    • @SiVlog1989

I thought that the series overall was good, but I got the impression that the crew were uncomfortable initially making the series. David Lane once said, "directing artists was a totally different thing for me, terrifying. I used to have a nice little spot on the way to work where I'd get out [of] the car, be sick and carry on and hope that a bus would hit you on the way."
The episodes shot in MGM studios in Borehamwood were very slow paced and the way the scripts were written, especially with the scenes in SHADO HQ, it would be easy to replace the live actors with the puppets they replaced. The latter ones, shot at Pinewood Studios were much better. The episodes were of faster pace and were more entertaining as such.
Having said all that, Ed Bishop was terrific as Commander Ed Straker. It's not surprising that entire episodes were written to put his character through the wringer emotionally and physically, he rose to the challenge each time. I have two episodes in particular that I love to rewatch, Reflections in the Water and Subsmash

Watched UFO as a kid (im 53 now) but it was not till about 8 years ago that i watched it on DVD from beginning to end and realized how good it is in characters story and special effects. of course it looks dated now but that dose not really matter the acting and stories rise above that it is a masterpiece of classic science fiction. I think the very underrated Ed Bishop steals the show with his portrayal of Cmdr Straker , he should have had a far more prominent roles given his amazing acting range.

What struck me about the series was it's darkness. There was something fascinating about the unremitting darkness of the UFO world, it really recaptured the grimness of war, probably coming out of peoples' memories of living through WW2. The whole motivation and character of the aliens was always mysterious and never fully explained. There was definitely a hint that they were very closely related to us in some way, perhaps they were visitors from our own future, or perhaps they 'seeded' our planet. I will always consider UFO to be a truly unique and original series despite being built on the 'alien invasion' cliche.

Anderson's concepts in _UFO_ were _way_ ahead of their time, such as the 'aliens' using an oxygenated liquid to enable breathing and also protect against acceleration. But it was also the very human stories that made you think; the idea that the 'aliens' being partially lobotomized humans that still had a spark of individuality left to them, despite the _real_ alien's best efforts, made them more than two-dimensional stock space opera villains. I still recall, after all these decades, the episode with Col. Foster and an 'alien' helping each other to survive on the Moon, and the tragic ending of that episode still haunts me. I was in my mid-teens when I saw the series on our side of the Pond in the 1970's, and I realized quickly that this wasn't a 'kiddie' show, it had genuine depth, and Anderson deserved more credit than he got.

I have recently decided to make my way through the series again on DVD to see what I missed. I rank UFO, Space 1999 and The Prisoner (albeit not sci-if related) to be my most favourite tv how… testament to both the genius of British Television production of the era and early-70’s childhood obsessions with space, nuclear war and a future forward-thinking society at the time.

Watching it in the 70s (I was quite little at the time) and much of it went over my head. But that UFO sound really stuck in the head. Fast forward a decade, the fashions, back-projection and hair really dated the show. But it was still pretty exciting stuff. That opening theme and montage with the quick cuts still gets the blood pumping today, fantastic score, and those opening beats. It was a pity the visuals of the interceptors and their 'nukes' never quite matched the scale (UFOs at near light speeds being hard to hit so dropping a nuke in their path seemed both bonkers but practical). It was actually that part of the show which inspired us to make our own PC game featuring SID (the game was a circular variant of missile command with samples from the show), it was really a testbed for a graphics library we made and a bit of fun. The concept still has legs, the idea of a super secret military organisation defending earth against extra solar threats is still pretty compelling. And Strakers car. That car.

I always thought the Iron Sky franchise in many ways is what a 21st Century UFO series should look like. They certainly owe this highly original puoneering series a tremendous debt of gratitude.

The costuming for both UFO and Space:1999 was Rudy Geinrich, who was famous for his 1964 design of a one-piece, topless bathing suit-- the Monokini. The wigs were his idea and (if I recall correctly) were kept to give the women of the moon base a slightly otherworldly appearance.

I own the blu-ray series and love it! Although Space: 1999 is my favorite of the Anderson shows, I truly appreciate the depth and tense atmosphere of UFO that bled into the first season of Space: 1999. As a kid I remember watching UFO and Space: 1999 back to back, not fully realizing both shows were produced by the Andersons, but thinking how uncanny both shared the same music cues and general 'vibe.' Also, until the hi-definition DVD and blu-ray extras came out, I had no idea the initial production of Space: 1999 was originally slated to be the second season of UFO. It's very interesting how these shows changed and we developed. At any rate, I'm grateful for the hi-definition 5.1 surround releases that have brought out the clarity and grand production of these shows. Aside from a handful of TV series made during the last 40 years, nothing rivals the scope or production of UFO and Space: 1999.

One thing clearly inspired by UFO was the computer game "X-Com: Enemy Unknown". That game and its sequels are available on Steam. In the first game, you are directing earth-based interceptors against UFOs and sending out armed recovery teams to collect the alien artifacts for investigation and research.
The Game "X-Com: Enemy Unknown" even inspired its own remake, the game "UFO: Extraterestrials", which is set on a human colony, not on earth, but has the same themes of intercepting and investigating alien incursions.

I lived in LA in the early 70's and was only 7 or 8 years old, but I remember watching UFO. When it came back on a few decades later, I started watching it all over again. I also saw the movie, which at the time was very haunting to me, called " Journey to the Far Side of the Sun", which I would never forget. I guess I was not one of those kids who played " Cops and Robbers" or " Cowboys and Indians". I always had a make-shift space helmet and ray gun on and ended up getting into Astronomy, buying telescopes learning astro-photography (and of course researching anything UFO's) by the time I was 16. UFO, Journey to the Far Side and Space 1999 were a big reason for it. There were other movies, 1950's and 60's era mostly, that scared the BeeJesus out of me too but UFO has always been my fav to go to. Wish there would have been a few more series. Sure I really got into Star Trek in syndication, but I think UFO was just my kind of freakie deakie, if you know what I mean. Loved the girls. Best episodes- Reflections in the Water, Confetti Check, Kill Straker, Destruction, Mindbender, Survival, A Question of Priorities, Identified and of Course, Exposed! Thank you Mr Anderson for setting me on the path.
