  • Stingray was made in 1963 using a combination of electronic marionette puppetry and scale model special effects. It was APF's sixth puppet series and the third to be produced under the banner of "Supermarionation".

    What's your favourite episode of Stingray? Who's your favourite character? Let us know!

      Probably, I would say, the Ghost of the Sea. An episode that focuses on how Commander Shore became a paraplegic, plus showing that he still has nightmares about it even five years after it. In addition, it was a story of heroism, honour and redemption

      Set Sail for Adventure. No question. The human adventures of the Stingray crew are just as wonderful as their undersea escapades. Plus Admiral Denver for best insane Anderson character.

      My favourite episode has to be "Hostages of the Deep" as Marina was very close to her untimely end when the swordfish came right down on the slab of stone; she got clear just in time! Speaking of Marina, she has being my favourite character in Stingray.

    Stingray, for me, was and remains the best Supermarionation vehicle of them all... followed by Thunderbird 2.
    I still remember having a Stingray toy in my bath every bath night, and I'm 63!

      @jimgall ufos - Yes, it seems that there are quite a few of us still around, mainly in our sixties, who were children when these shows aired for the very first time. For example, I would have been 12 years old when the “Thunderbirds” series took to the air in 1965. So, for us, the shows carry a powerful nostalgia - as well as being excellent shows and quite unique because of their use of Supermarionation techniques.

    • @cindyvonterra2596

      Stingray had the most exciting and amazing opening sequences maybe EVER! I especially love the buildings diving into hydraulic underground safety AND the official drumbeat signals for the various duty stations. Cool, original for a futuristic sci-fi show. Opening sequence for Stingray is very exciting. I'm in my late 60s, a woman and I loved these shows when they were new (along with Supercar (awesome!), Fireball XL5 (great!), The Thunderbirds (saw these as reruns in the 70s here in THE USA) and of course, Stingray. I adore these shows more now than when I was a kid in the '60s, or a teenager in the 70s. I LOVE watching them over and over again; the production and effects are unbelievably excellent for their time and I LOVE that I see more details every time I binge them all. I've begun buying collectibles, including T-shits I proudly wear just waiting and hoping someone COOL know what I'm wearing and recognizes my Thunderbird shirts AND my most recent acquisition , my FAB "RAISED ON SUPERMATIONATION" T-shirt. I LOVE THESE SHOWS. And I'm not ashamed I have crushes on Scott, Virgil and Jeff Tracy, the latter become more attractive to me the OLDER I GET!!! FUNNY. I love you all, Anderfans. We have the greatest taste in TV and BLESS Jamie Anderson for keeping these TREASURES available to the inhabitants (with class) of Planet Earth. I'm incredibly thrilled these shows are available! They make me VERY happy and I love everyone who has been involved producing these fantastic works of art..past, present and future. And PLEASE get a GET WELL/THINKING OF YOU WITH LOVE AND ADMIRATION TO Mr.David Graham. Is he the last man standing???? TAKE CARE AND SO MUCH LOVE TO ALL FANS AND CREW -- now and forever. Loved Stingray and Thunderbirds, UFO - though as a kid the Stingray baddies used to scare me :) Was amazed a few years back to visit the funky, hip QT Hotel on the Gold Coast in Australia. They had a Stingray bar - with same sign/logo/font as the show. Even the staff at hotel checkin wore pastel coloured Thunderbirds-themed uniforms - so cool and yet sadly no-one with me even knew the Stingray show when I pointed it ...

    During lockdown I bought a boxed set of the Munsters in a charity shop & spotted Robert Easton in one ep (All-Star Munsters), I was so surprised I genuinely had to do a double take. His career as a vocal & dialect coach was quite remarkable to say nothing of his collection of historical literature. It's a great pity he wasn't more widely regarded during his lifetime. In the Jeremy Brett adaptation of the Greek interpreter the actor playing the villain def. does X20 not Peter Lorre.

    Stingray was my first exposure to Gerry Anderson's work and as such remains a personal favourite of mine. I do agree that it has been overshadowed by Thunderbirds & Captain Scarlet, but considering the magnitude of those shows it's not hard to see why. Does that make Stingray inferior? In my opinion, no. Gerry simply improved and refine what he had learned and made his shows better.
    Only question I have now is, when is Stingray getting a modern reboot? Thunderbirds & Captain Scarlet have had positive reception from rebooted series, I just feel like Stingray deserves the same opportunity.

    I forget the episode title now, but the episode where Stingray is shot up and Troy ends up in hospital was a favourite. Been years since I properly watched the series.
    Fave character as a kid was Troy but nowadays I'd say Shore.

      1st Episode ' Stingray' Oct4th 1964: When the World Security Patrol Sea Probe submarine is mysteriously destroyed, Troy Tempest and Phones are assigned to investigate. However, they are attacked by a strange Mechanical Fish and taken to the underwater city of Titanica, ruled by Titan. Troy protests that the WASP's purpose is investigation, not aggression, but Titan subsumes him to a strange trial headed by Teufel, Titanica's great fish god, who looks only upon friends of the Titanicans. Tuefel turns away from Troy and Titan declares him and Phones guilty, sentencing them both to death at the underwater prison of Aquatraz. But while en route, Titan's slave, Marina, helps Troy and Phones to escape.

    My favourite episode is the plant of doom and my favourite character is Captain Troy Tempest Anything can happen in the next half hour

      @kiwitrainguy ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the episode where the fish god Teufel plays his biggest part, showing Titan the blue coral flower.
      A close second would be the trial of Troy Tempest in the first episode, then Teufel appears in The Golden Sea when Titan is simply bouncing his idea of him. Then he isn't seen again in the series.

      That "clonk" comes from the episode called "Tom Thumb Tempest" where they find out that they're in a fish tank in X20's house and Titan is going to be holding a dinner party in that room for him and his evil buddies. It all turns out to be a dream.

    I read somewhere that Marina did have ability to speak ... She did not speak because she had taken a vow of silence to protect her people. "One of these audio episodes (entitled "Marina Speaks") reveals that Marina is not actually mute at all. She and her people have been cursed by Titan; if any of them speaks, another will die. They are not certain if this is true, but none of them dares find out; and so for years they have lived in complicit silence."

    • @kiwitrainguy
      @kiwitrainguy ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard that one as well but it doesn't tie in with the episode in which X20 disguises himself as a speech therapist and they ask him to teach Marina to talk. Marina was all for it and she wouldn't have been if that other story was true.

    I adored Stingray...the opening title music still creates excitement all these decades later ...er...plus I had a big crush on Lieutenant Fisher who I suspect from his ice skating technique and because he was alone at Christmas....was gay.
