Have you tried the audio series? What's your favourite thing about Terrahawks?

    • @trainlover16

I've listened to the entire first season of the audio series on Spotify. It's really great, defiantly a very underrated Gerry Anderson series as a whole. Some of my favriote things about the show are The Battlehawk, The Zeroids, Dr Ninestein and It-Star. I also love Dick Branston from the audio episodes.

Hete in the States there was a different version of the ending credits. It was an animation of one of the Zeroids bouncing up and down next to one of Zelda's Cubes during the song entitled "Living in the 21st Century." We didn't get the tic tac toe ending on this side of the pond.

I have fond memories of Terrahawks as a kid of the 1980's, but yes it was indeed a weird ass show i do recall however. Kids i went to school with were still into; Starfleet/X-Bomber which ITV showed up until 1984 or so. Terrahawk's tone was massively weird by comparisons like this video points out, goofy and comical one minute while shocking and darker the next episode etc's.
Glad it got revived in he audios by Big Finish but i haven't heard them at all yet. As i feel its the one Anderson show that needed and required proper storyarcs. Neither Zelda nor the Terrahawk characters had much backstory.

My brother was into He-man along with millions of other kids. So a puppet show like Terrahawks was not even on the radar. Gerry Anderson didn't move with the times. He was still stuck in the 1960s trying to recreate 60s television in the 80s which simply didn't work

There was a point in my childhood which was frankly frightened to death by some TV shows, and this was one of them. I watched an old episode recently on youtube; the one where Zero goes to the hospital, and dreams his friends are the aliens. Im 43 now, and it still freaked the daylights out of me. There were some Space 1999 episodes which were more traumatising but this was meant for kids. The ships were cool, and the wigs look exactly like Space 1999, so I wonder if that show was meant to be a live-action spinoff??
I dont think there were many toys for Terrrahawks, but where I lived they had these wired jellys. They came in a plastic and foil flat pack, a bit like Star wars figures, but made of multicoloured rubbery jelly. At least Zelda was as hideous as she was funny, and I still laugh at her outrageous put-downs.

Even a remake like stingray, thunderbirds will never be the same like the original Terahawks as it was best redone as there were less strings you could see as better than before.
At the end we always knew who won each episode

I must admit I was one of the older Gerry Anderson fans who grew up with his work from Thunderbirds through to Space:1999 and each show seemed to be a step up from the one before. When Terrahawks made it's debut, I was in my early teens and it seemed like a step backwards at the time. It lacked the sophistication of Supermarionation or the fantastic effects and set designs of his live action sci-fi. Now looking back, it's interesting and more enjoyable now than I appreciated at the time.

I don't know if this show ever made it here to U.S. shores, but I have alot of Anderson's shows (entire runs) including Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 (U.S. DVD boxed sets), and British DVD imports of Supercar, Fireball XL-5, Stingray, Captain Scarlett and the Mysterons, Joe 90, UFO, and Thunderbirds Are Go (plus the two feature length films made in the 60s). I also imported a DVD boxed set of Space Patrol, even if it's not an Anderson show. I wish Stingray, Captain Scarlett, and Thunderbirds had lasted longer. They're my favorite Anderson shows. We also get Thunderbirds Are Go and Stingray on Amazon Prime Video.

Yes, the series was syndicated in the U.S. in 1986, IIRC. I saw it on WPWR-TV in Chicago.

Loved Terrahawks in my early 20s and still love it now. The 3 Audio series from Big Finish are amazing with A Clone of My Own, My Enemy's Enemy and Enemies, Negotiation and Deceit being outstanding stories; the later having a jaw-dropping OMG ending! Listen beyond the end credits! All in all Terrahawks was, is and will be again Won-der-Ful!

I remember this being quite a decent, if slightly mental, show when it first started. LWT showed it late afternoon or early evening as I recall. As it was quite dark outside I guess it debuted in the autumn in 1983. I also remember there was some merchandise like toys available. Weird watching this clip how closely the puppets resemble the Spitting Image puppets, something I hadn't really noticed beforehand.
It is unfortunate that Gerry Anderson had so many money struggles throughout his career. When you think about the world famous legacy he left generations you'd think he was minted when he died but apparently not. I gather he sold the TV rights to his back catalogue such as Thunderbirds back in the late1960s (in an era before home video and repeat fees had ever been thought of). He also had an expensive and messy divorce from Sylvia in the mid 1970s that left a lot of ill will too. By the time he had made Terrahawks the home video market was slowly evolving and the show was a moderate success. So effectively he needed to keep working. It probably wasn't until the 1990s that the public properly started to appreciate his legacy. When he died in 2012 he was financially comfortable but he certainly wasn't rolling in money thanks to some poor business decisions he had made years earlier.

Maybe its because I came across this show as an adult that I don't see the attraction. Rather I find myself asking "How can you watch this?", something my dad use to ask us about various shows back in the 80's.
