I like that the Lt steps up to tell the mother, her friend. Not easy.
Yeah. There's no good way to hear something like that, but it's less bad to hear it from someone you know cares, I think.

Beautiful acting from the actress portraying the Lt'. Subtle, nuanced anguish and sorrow. Superbly done.

She played a mother of a child in one of the early episodes of law & order.
One of the things so many actors flub, Merkerson absolutely nailed it.
You should have seen her performance in Terminator 2. 🤌🏼🤌🏼
This series, specifically, including the SVU spinoff, always manage to cast amazing actors, even those no-name ones that seem to just walk into the role.
Some very subtle things happen when Van Buren gets the file. When the detectives walk in, the background office noises are clear and distinct, with lots of higher pitch sounds. As Van Buren opens the file and starts reading it, the outer office sounds become slightly muted, allowing the sounds of her hands on the file to become evident. Just as she speaks, the sounds become even more muted, then rising again when she stops speaking. "She's the daughter" Van Buren sheds a little tear, silently speaking volumes.
Merkerson is a great actress. There are many great actresses; not just Meryl Streep.
Agreed, Sally Field, Susan Sarandon, Sarah Paulson (they all have names starting with ‘S’ lol including Streep and S. Epatha)

She's 71 now and STILL fabulous.

Lt. Anita Van Buren, Chief Bill Gillespie, Captains Frank Furillo & Donald Cragen and Lt. Al "Gee" Giadello are the best tv cop bosses ever! Every single one are the types of tough but fair, badass paternal figures we all wish we could work for. They were extremely loyal to the men and women under their command no matter what.
Glad people mention Gee somewhere - Homicide is an amazing show and I wish more people watched it
Lt. Fancy, (James McDaniel) who had also been a perp in L&O.
I loved S. Epatha Merkerson on this show. She brought so much to Lt. Van Buren.
0:59 goosebumps. what a reveal, the dolly in and the music are such potent choices. this show was a production treasure.

This episode like most was disturbing..ex threw acid in her face which cause her to go into depression as I remember. Might have been worth some jail time if I was her father and I caught the guy that did that

@@Deborahtunes Some states, you can walk if you called for trial by jury. Most people would feel empathy under certain conditions. I believe the father that attacked the coach who spent years assaulting girls gymnastic team walked because of this. The other I remembered was in Texas where the father waited at the airport and executed the guy who kidnapped and raped his son.
@@discover854 ~ I'm aware of this. Unfortunately though, very few states allow "self defense" laws anymore. Criminals have more rights than the law-abiding citizens do these days...
@@discover854 The father apologized to the court and the judge said there would be no charges against him. There was no jury involved.
technically it's not a murder if they can't find the body..it's just a "missing person"

Two terrible crimes ! The acid thrower needs to be sued, and then placed in a maximum security mental health unit, in a prison for at least 10 years ! I did not see this episode, did she commit suicide or was she murdered ?

According to the recap of the episode the daughter did commit suicide but only because of what happened to her face months earlier causing her to fall into a deep depression. Still would like to know how she was able to bind her hands by herself or if she had help.

Who opens someone door like that? I always keep my doors locked 24/7 bolt and all. I had to move to a not so nice area a little while ago and it's a whole new world. I've had all types of people trying to open my doors, even children.

Actually I think you might be. Its common among suicides to do this so they have no chance of changing their minds at the last second.
Plus a note could be written by the murderer claiming to be the victim.
