Bucking bronco horse!

  • How about this for horsemanship? Jockey Tom Greatrex readies himself for the ride aboard Blue Haze in a bumper race at Worcester in May 2016, and then this happens...
Ready to leave the parade ring and about to head out on course, Blue Haze decides to go all bucking bronco - and make the unsuspecting rider have to earn his fee! Despite the odds, conditional jockey Tom Greatrex rides the storm and manages to stay in the plate - and even dismount and head back to the stables with the horse, who was declared a non-runner and didn't take part in the race. Fair play, Tom!

I’m just going to say this but if u watch the full video which is about 2 mins long, there was a loud boom/bang and that is what caused the horse to freak out. This was no one’s fault what to ever, wasn’t the horses, the handler, or the jockey. The jockey only did what he that he could do in that split second which was to pull back on the horse. I do agree that he could have pulled the horse in a circle, but sometimes us as humans, we only do one thing, and with the jockey he was thinking he had to get the horse to stop no matter what, yes he could have pulled the horse in a circle instead of pulling head on it’s mouth, but Yes it was “somewhat Horsemanship” but the many thing is that no one was hurt and that the horse was ok. Sometimes you have to do thing in order to keep yourself and other from get hurt and that includes the horse horse as well. It would have been horrible if the rider had gotten bucked off and badly hurt, and now you have a lose horse on the track with a lead road on, that if he stepped on it, it could cause him to trip and fall and maybe even break his leg. I think the jockey was looking at the WHOLE picture, for his safety and the horses

You cant ride a circle with horse broncing in a straight line The long reins and steady pull were exactly the right thing to do. Keeping that head UP at any cost with a steady pull on long rein was just right. Easy to be an armchair critic. Have you ever even been on a racing thoroughbred?? The power and agility and fitness level are way beyond any lesson pony or backyard horse.

A young horse had me off once when he plunged with his back arched UP strangely to avoid cantering round a corner. I BRUISED MY TAILBONE FROM THAT! I was going to say the same thing. He has an amazing balance up there, but going straight forward is always easier than staying on a turning horse. No stirrups and just a little piece of leather between him and the horse, it would've been very unsafe for him to try and pull him in a circle, especially if the horse had tried to buck during the turn. A loose horse is extremely dangerous for himself and others, so not falling off is very important - he chose the right moment to jump off.

It’ll spin him in circles till eventually he stops, he shouldn’t fall, or I’ve yet to have one just fall over from it even bucking. But this is coming from a western rider, so. Had a similar situation happen once on a Gypsy Vanner. He was a lesson horse that my trainer said was "bombproof" 30 mins prior. He spooked because it was very windy outside that day even though I was in the indoor arena. He pretty much turned into a bucking bronco and even though it probably only lasted around 25 seconds, it felt like minutes. I remember just thinking as it happened, I really don't feel like getting thrown off today, and somehow I managed to ride it out. What I took away from that experience is no horse is "bombproof" and don't panic.

Amazing seat. With bareback riding, you wrap your lower legs around the horse's rib cage and have your upper leg and pelvis moving with the seat. In a buck and bolt situation, you lean back, keep the horse's head up and ride it out. When the horse slows, you get off and calm the horse, then when it is calm, get back on and ride home. You DON'T STAY ON when it slows, you reward this behaviour (slowing);by getting off. Besides which, if you stay on, horse is probably going to go into round two in a few seconds. Get off in the lull, regain control of your mount, and go from there. He did everything right and prevented a very bad situation. BTW, I break horses as a hobby and have been riding off track racehorses since I was 15 years old and I'm now 45. Before you reply some bullshit comment, you need to think what it might be like to ride a horse that's not a perfect little Pony Club Schoolmaster.

haha very funny reading the comments as usual. I actually thought this horse was fairly honest. Hes a young green horse, he could have slapped his head between his legs and start to plunge but he didnt. The jockey did well fair enough but the horse could have went to town on him and he didnt

You never turn a racehorse in a sharp circle. They can injure their fragile legs. He did the exact & most profession thing. He kept the horse STRAIGHT which is your safest option on a racetrack. Try to turn the horse sharp, he could hurt himself, try wide circles, you may both go through the rails & end up in the ditch, with a 1200lb equine athlete tangled in safety netting on top of you.

Sam Bur Their legs are fragile cause their babies and they should not be raising them and they’re all idiots in the racing industry this is disgusting and abusive
